Ben and Jim Bob's hair was 1970s style. Really loved the show. All six of the younger Waltons were, to me, just absolutely excellent actors. You were so good in your roles. Even when you were very young, you stayed in character. Very professional. Thanks for the good entertainment.
My memory is the kids weren't made up the first season until the producers complained that it looked wrong during dailies. We looked insanely pale next to the adults. I wonder if they made you and Jon up and not David, Mary and me? And I hated getting pancake on my arms and neck, too. Wet and cold and uncomfortable.
A different make up plan for the genuine gingers would have made sense, because making them look too tan (especially you , Kami, the most naturally pale) would appear more unnatural. But if you remember there seemed to be an age line on the make up, I wonder if the real issue was height. You weren't getting hit with the lights the same way when you were itty bitty, thus changing the degree of need for the pancake awfulness. Just guessing, trying to make sense of the motivation.
The two episodes where Mary Ellen dyes Jim Bobs hair and Olivia gets a perm are priceless. Both Mary Ellen and Verdi laugh at poor Olivia, and then John tells the family that "frizzy says goodnight" at bed time, lol
One of the many good things about your videos is the good feeling you get when watching. I watch your videos everyday when I drink my coffee because they give me a feeling of hope and warmth in a world that's not so kind.
I'm drinking coffee and listening to Judy! The Walton's and the 70's growing up was a kinder time. It's comforting. Life the way life should be but it feels so harsh now. No wonder so many people feel depressed.
Nowadays, viewers are extremely observant at catching historical inaccuracies, thanks, I think, largely to "Mad Men", which was painstakingly accurate (they obsessively researched every single detail, whether a character's blouse, a hairstyle or a song playing in the background, to make sure that it fit the period), but with older shows like "The Waltons", I think viewers at that time were more forgiving of little details like Mary-Ellen's Farah-inspired hairstyle. It also probably helped that we only watched the night it aired, and didn't rewatch little clips over and over again on UA-cam, like we do now.
@@delip9303 Absolutely. As someone who worked in theatre for about 15 years, I really enjoy the breakdowns of things. Also great to just have this stuff documented for the future.
I haven't seen "Mad Men" but you do make some really good points. I've always loved it when I've watched movies or shows when styles and props are completely true to the era. When I was recently writing my first novel about a young woman who goes back to the home front of 1943, I did countless research to make sure a movie being seen or a song or radio show was historically accurate for the exact date- if I found out a song didn't come out until the next year, I wouldn't reference it. So, when the reunion movies came out, it was strange that the writers and editors couldn't refer back to previous facts and line things up...but of course, it's usually only glaringly obvious to most of the audience when a channel shows each movie in order in a row- rather than watching them years apart. :)
I don't know a lot about make-up and hair, but two episodes do stand out. Erin's lack of makeup after the fire in "The Burnout", and the excessive makeup that they had you wear in one scene of "The Actress". These were unusual onscreen looks for both you & Mary, but it did a great job of conveying the message.
Judy, A Simple Thank you. The Walton television show still means so much to so many people even to this day. On the last few days of my father's life his eyes would still light up if you saw that The Waltons were coming on. The hospice nurse said it was amazing to see him light up like he did to see that television show. I can't say enough and how much we appreciate everyone who had anything to do with that wonderful show. ❤
I think the 70’s hairstyles was accepted, because we were growing with you, and wore our hair the same, so we didn’t notice it wasn’t period appropriate. I loved the style on you. It was sexy. These are the best segments on UA-cam. Thank you, Judy! Much love! ❤️
I kind of did take note of the discrepancy of the hair and the times. The hair was very contemporary for the seventies. And yet I do think in all decades there were always a certain number of girls who kept their hair long despite the current hairstyle trend. It was often put up.
As l remember, you wore your hair down in the first episodes as you said, and occasionally I’d see Erin with her hair in two ponytail and with Elizabeth she always had her hair in ponytails or braids. Anyway that’s how l remembered it 😊! As always ❤loved the show and it’s absolutely my favorite show ever always and forever 🙏♥️ Mrs.Putnam here!♥️🙏♥️
Cora Beth went from a plain Jane at the beginning g when she was first married to Mr. Godsey. Slowly she started wearing more and more. By the end Cora Beth had a studio 54 disco makep with the dark lip gloss! LOL. For the 1940s it was supposed to look matte not so much use and shiny lips.
Hi Judy I love your UA-cam channel and your insight on the Waltons. I was personal friends with Ancel Cook who did several episodes of the Waltons. He introduced us to Ralph and Ralph became a friend of my mothers. We were living in Palm Springs and Ralph and my mother were working on a project for a drug and alcohol rehab center. Ralph was over at our house one night. I was in my bedroom which was right by the front door and when Ralph left I could not resist. I shouted out good night daddy. Ralph was kind enough to peek his head in my bedroom and say good night Charlie. It’s the moment I will never forget as a big fan of the Waltons. I will continue to watch your channel and enjoy it.
My mother was born in 1930 in a rural family in the foothills of NC. They raised tobacco and had a garden and a little livestock. She said girls wore long sleeves and hats when working to prevent tans. Having a tan then showed you were poor and had to work in the sun. Also they already knew tans early in life made skin look old much earlier. I figured they made y'all lighter for this reason plus several of you had fair skin. Occasionally she'd point out things that were wrong for the period but not often. They didn't have electricity until after WWII. I am 61 yo and grew up with the Waltons. Didn't watch the last few years until after I was grown but watched up til '78 almost every week. Just discovered your channel. Thanks for the memories.
I remember a comment Kami Cotler made about the later season’s hairstyles. She said to the effect that the cast had to go to school in real life and they wanted to feel normal, not walking around in 1940s haircuts. I feel the boys should have been sports and did the GI haircuts for two seasons. They could have stuck it out. Ben’s hair was so long he looked like an extra for Saturday Night Fever.
Never thought about their lack of military hair cuts! You're correct, the boys should have sucked it up for a season or two. My brother joined the Navy in the late 70s and after basic training, he was able to let his hair grow out some....it just couldn't touch his shirt collar.
@@Kryptospotted To be fair, I don't think the show spent a lot on money on wardrobe. I would not be surprised if a lot of the clothing was just bought at a local Sears or another contemporary department store.

It's so funny that you mention the hairstyle of the actors in the Waltons. I always noticed that during the years Mary Ellen was a mother and became a nurse, you definitely had the Farrah Fawcett hairstyle. I think to some extent, so did Mary, but hers was also kind of like Jaclyn Smith's hairstyle. The guys tended to wear their hair parted to the side, but David Harper had his hair like most of the guys during the 1977-1980, which was to have the hair parted in the middle. Today, they call it the "butt cut". I wore my hair exactly the same. And so did many other guys. The only time a hairstyle was a bit cringe-worthy was on the last reunion special for Eric Scott. He had the mullet going on, but I did, too. Eric has such beautiful red hair and is so darn cute- it's not as bad as some of the Billy Ray Cyrus mullets that pop upon old videos. I loved your hairstyle in the 1960's era reunion special during the Kennedy Assassination. You wore the flip beautifully. I love your current hair length and color. I know all of us Walton fans observe every prop, tree, furniture and other background items from the show. I also watch your "Behind The Scenes" videos each week and I notice your pretty backyard. You had some pretty flowers on what look like a hill. I can see it behind you in the window while you sit in your chair. You're such a beautiful woman and I enjoy your "Behind the Scenes" episodes. By the way- you know that you and Billy Moses (Falcons Crest) were the best athletes on the old "Battle of the Network Stars" specials. Anytime an actress had to swim, kayak or catch a football against you, I knew they were in trouble. Take care Judy
Miss Judy I have enjoyed hearing behind the scenes, Of the waltons. I loved the show. I feel like I know the character Maryellen. But most of all for me. It has been nice hearing you speak as Judy. Your self. Thanks again for behind the scenes of the waltons.
It always amazed me when Olivia got the perm and the next episode she had her normal hair again. I think this was at the end of Season 5 and we were expected to believe it had just grown out in a few months.
@@judynorton2598 And they used a darker wig instead of her blond color. Maybe they thought it looked sort of nice in the blond. So they went with a color that wasn't as flattering.
I love these, Judy. You are a joy, in real life and in the series, which is a treasure. Your voice and manner of speaking are just a wholesome delight. Thank you for preserving these memories. I loved your long hair with the part down the middle :)
always loved the hair and makeup the way it was done over the years loved how the makeup and hair changed on Judy you was always a cute girl got prettier and prettier as the show went on your hairstyles change to had nice hair the same goes for Erin as well she got prettier and prettier as well as the show went on and had great hair Ben hairstyle changed a lot so did john boy his hair changed as well thanks for sharing Michael hair was red like you said and then went blonde noticed that but loved your hair judy as you got older thanks for sharing judy great video👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
It was almost funny seeing how red all the kids hair was in the homecoming, then the series started and all the red hair had faded, but never thought a thing about it, I remember seeing grandma cut grandpa's hair. I know a lot of shows from the 70s that were supposed to be set in earlier times had characters that had modern haircuts, I'm speaking mainly of Little House on the Prairie, and Dean Butler. Again thank you for doing these behind the scenes videos.
As always really enjoy these behind the scenes episode. I was born in 1962 so grew up watching and rewatching your show and it is such a happy memory for me. I’m so glad we still get the interaction we do with many of the cast. I’m in the UK and I know Jon now lives here in Cornwall where we holiday most years. Just caught up on a few of these episodes I hadn’t had time to watch. Thank you Judy. Xx
Hello Judy thank you so much for entertaining us thur out the years so love the waltons the waltons remind me of my family my mom had 8 of us 6 girls 2 boys
I am SO GLAD your Agent stepped in and prevented you from getting a bowl cut! In the 70's my hair was reddish brown and long like Mary Ellen's. Photos of my relatives in the 30's in rural WV, the girls did not have bobbed hair. Grandma always wore a bun. My Grandfather believed girls should have long hair.
I’m late to viewing this but nonetheless loved this behind the scenes on hair and makeup. I always wondered about those “red-headed children” and how the production team managed the discrepancies. Keep them coming, Ms. Judy. We love you.
This is so fascinating! Clearly you really loved acting. To tolerate a makeup job like that, and all day too. And under all the intense lighting. Thanks Judy for doing it for us.
Love these vids you put out. So calming and relaxing. And these take me back to good memories, watching the show as a child and then, watching reruns with my elderly mother in later years. A lot of fun getting a glimpse of behind-the-scenes. Thank you! 😊💕
I have always loved the show "The Walton's"! It makes me feel so peaceful and at home with all of you ! Thank you ! May Sir God alway's bless you and your family!
Thank you for this and all BTS videos. I just finished, for the first time mostly, all 9 seasons and the reunion movies. The changing hairstyles were very nice and attractive on you and Mary (Erin). I was sad when I finished with John Boys wedding but I'll just watch all over again!
Very interesting listening about the hair. I always loved Kami's beautiful red hair! I don't know if you have done an episode on the music of the show but I have an ask Judy question. There was an episode with cousin Zadok where he came to visit. John woke up to Zadok playing his fiddle at Drucillas pond. That is the most hauntingly beautiful piece of music. I would love to be able to find that.
Thanks Judy, enjoyed all the Walton ladies on the show. The final season Mary Ellen, Erin, Elizabeth and Cindy's hair made all four of you very very beautiful young ladies. I was in love with you all. So sad to hear of Richard Gilliland's passing. As always take care, stay safe and GOD BLESS.
You are definitely blessed with beautiful eyes and eyelashes then and now! I thought the children's hair was historically and situationally appropriate until the "winged" curls, but it didn't seem to matter. I remember purchasing Max Factor pancake for a community theater performance. I felt so professional like real actors! Thanks for a fun and informative bts with The Walton's. A blessed Holy Week to you and your loved ones, Judy and Walton's everywhere. 😊🧡💐🦋🐰🙏🕊️🌹
I think Cora Beth's hair REALLY reflected the 40s 'do the best - it looked terrific. And I thought Olivia's & Grandma's hair was perfect too. I loved that Grandpa had that country boy hair length forever - as did John Sr. for the most part. Interesting details on the rest of makeup & hair on y'all!!
Thanks Judy!! These videos are as much fun as watching the actual episodes and in some ways more so because of getting to see how it was all put together.
Such agony I can feel as you describe getting " made up"..another thing as viewers take for granted. Love your down to earth explanations. Thanks for all the memories of the Waltons. Many blessings to you and yours.
I remember in high school when we was doing plays. We did the sponge thing too. Also being a guy we had to wear the make up on stage too. Thanks for this great video.
Just watched 'The Baptism'. What a good episode. Amazing how much more I appreciate all these episodes as to when I watched them as an 18 to 20 year old. Thanks for the behind the scenes info. Interesting to hear what you guys went thru with makeup. You always looked liked you had good skin tone. ;)

You are a lovely person and I am mesmerized by your articulation, and the way you speak. Keep on making videos! 😘 all the best to you and your family.
Hi Judy! My wife and I love watching the Waltons on Amazon. I was born in 1964 so I remember watching as a kid but appreciate the show much more now. Much better than most of the stuff on today. I just assumed you all had 70s hairstyles, especially in the later years, because the producers and network thought it would be more appealing to the audience.
Hi Judy, looking nice I injoy your videos so far on the Waltons. Keep up the good work. Since I started to watch your videos I've been watching repeat of The Waltons again on TV. I forgot it was a wonderful family show.
A classmate had her hair all dyed up so that she could be The Bride of Frankenstein on Halloween 1977. Various colors were used. Then the dyes left purple streaks in her hair after that. Her parents sued the hairdresser
Thank you for pointing out the hair of the later seasons. It sort of bumping me when I would watch those, but hearing you acknowledge it makes me realize it wasn’t my imagination lol.
I Loved your hair in the later episodes well in all the episodes and I don't think anyone was paying to much attention that it was a 70's style because you looked so beautiful! Thank you!!
Good commentary. I know people who do community theater and have heard about hair and makeup from them. It's nice to know that TV and theater use similar techniques. The comments about the lighting changing the makeup was god to know. Costuming Cam also be a challenge.

Thank you for all your kind words.
Thanks for making our Monday so much better :)
My pleasure!
Your Son does a wonderful job editing and adding the clips. And as always you are amazing Judy. 👍🏻😘
Thank you so much!
Thanks for sharing Behind the Scenes of the Walton's
Thank you, Judy! I just love that large straw hat that you've worn in a few episodes at the beginning. I wish I could find one like it!
It was a fun hat - I loved wearing it.
Ms. Judy I just watched the Waltons where you "Mary Ellen got married. You looked so Beautiful. Thank you for sharing the Waltons with us. God bless.
Thank you so much
Miss Judy I have enjoyed hearing behind the scenes, Of the waltons. I loved the show. I feel like I know the character Maryellen. But most of all for me. It has been nice hearing you speak as Judy. Your self. Thanks again for behind the scenes of the waltons.
My pleasure.
It always amazed me when Olivia got the perm and the next episode she had her normal hair again. I think this was at the end of Season 5 and we were expected to believe it had just grown out in a few months.
Maybe they used a wig?
Another one of the inconsistencies in the timeline.
and yes... it was a wig.
@@judynorton2598 And they used a darker wig instead of her blond color. Maybe they thought it looked sort of nice in the blond. So they went with a color that wasn't as flattering.
Thank You for sharing these behind the scenes stories. Great to hear your memories of being on the show.
My pleasure!
I love these, Judy. You are a joy, in real life and in the series, which is a treasure. Your voice and manner of speaking are just a wholesome delight. Thank you for preserving these memories. I loved your long hair with the part down the middle :)
Thank you for watching and for sharing.
always loved the hair and makeup the way it was done over the years loved how the makeup and hair changed on Judy you was always a cute girl got prettier and prettier as the show went on your hairstyles change to had nice hair the same goes for Erin as well she got prettier and prettier as well as the show went on and had great hair Ben hairstyle changed a lot so did john boy his hair changed as well thanks for sharing Michael hair was red like you said and then went blonde noticed that but loved your hair judy as you got older thanks for sharing judy great video👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Great comment!
Thanks
You're welcome.
Thanks Judy appreciate it
Thank you. Judy for sharing behind the scenes ,how they did the hair and makeup.I thought that was inneresting.
Glad you liked it.
You're welcome.
Xx
Glad you like them!
Hello Judy thank you so much for entertaining us thur out the years so love the waltons the waltons remind me of my family my mom had 8 of us 6 girls 2 boys
So glad you have enjoyed the series.
I wasn’t aware of the real haircuts of that era.
I’m late to viewing this but nonetheless loved this behind the scenes on hair and makeup. I always wondered about those “red-headed children” and how the production team managed the discrepancies. Keep them coming, Ms. Judy. We love you.
My pleasure.
This is so fascinating! Clearly you really loved acting. To tolerate a makeup job like that, and all day too. And under all the intense lighting. Thanks Judy for doing it for us.
I did! Hard work, but such fun.
Love these vids you put out. So calming and relaxing. And these take me back to good memories, watching the show as a child and then, watching reruns with my elderly mother in later years. A lot of fun getting a glimpse of behind-the-scenes. Thank you! 😊💕
Glad you like them!
I have always loved the show "The Walton's"! It makes me feel so peaceful and at home with all of you ! Thank you ! May Sir God alway's bless you and your family!
Thanks for watching.
@@judynorton2598 Thank you so much for replying back to me .You have made day,as alway's!
Thanks for sharing this article on make up and hair. I did wonder how you all looked great.
Oh thank you!
Thank you so much for sharing i.enjoy watching the waltons
Glad you like them!
I’ve grown up with the waltons and miss watching it
Glad you enjoy them. Many areas play reruns and there are DVD's some people buy to rewatch.
Thank you for this and all BTS videos. I just finished, for the first time mostly, all 9 seasons and the reunion movies. The changing hairstyles were very nice and attractive on you and Mary (Erin). I was sad when I finished with John Boys wedding but I'll just watch all over again!
So glad you enjoy them!
We did have wonderful music.
Great suggestion!
@@judynorton2598 Thanks Judy!☺
Thanks Judy You are part of our Childhood love the videos .
You are so welcome
Thanks Judy, enjoyed all the Walton ladies on the show. The final season Mary Ellen, Erin, Elizabeth and Cindy's hair made all four of you very very beautiful young ladies. I was in love with you all. So sad to hear of Richard Gilliland's passing. As always take care, stay safe and GOD BLESS.
How long did it take to apply John Boy's mole :-)
Glad you enjoyed it. Yes it's very sad about Richard.
It's natural
You are definitely blessed with beautiful eyes and eyelashes then and now! I thought the children's hair was historically and situationally appropriate until the "winged" curls, but it didn't seem to matter. I remember purchasing Max Factor pancake for a community theater performance. I felt so professional like real actors! Thanks for a fun and informative bts with The Walton's. A blessed Holy Week to you and your loved ones, Judy and Walton's everywhere.
😊🧡💐🦋🐰🙏🕊️🌹
Thank you- you too.
Glad you enjoyed it.
Always loved your hair ..You have great hair now! 🚶🏼♀️🏵🌾🦋🐇 thanks Judy!
Oh thank you!
Thanks Judy!! These videos are as much fun as watching the actual episodes and in some ways more so because of getting to see how it was all put together.
So glad you enjoy them.
Such agony I can feel as you describe getting " made up"..another thing as viewers take for granted. Love your down to earth explanations. Thanks for all the memories of the Waltons. Many blessings to you and yours.
Thank you kindly, you too.
Happy Days also didn't stay with the period very well.
So true!
Happy Days pretended like viewers forgot that it was set in the 1950s, then the 1960s
@@JohnClifford4567jwc
I know. Much worse than The Waltons.
The last two seasons moved onto the 1960's.
Apparently the producers fought with Scott Baio over his mullet at first, and then decided it wasn’t worth it.
I remember in high school when we was doing plays. We did the sponge thing too. Also being a guy we had to wear the make up on stage too. Thanks for this great video.
You're welcome
My pleasure. Glad you enjoyed it.
Judy I wanted your hair do then! I was a young teenager and really watched yall hairdos! Beautiful!
Oh wow. Thank you.
I always thought your hair was so pretty, we watch every day at noon on Me TV - it’s so fun to see it again 💛
Glad you enjoy it.
Thank you so much Judy aka Mary Ellen Walton u make my day watching ur videos keep up the good work, u look amazing by the way
Thanks so much
I love that short hair cut when you was with jonesy, you have always been so beautiful 💞💞
Hi Judy,
One memorable scene was from "The Actress", they had you wearing some flashy makeup in that episode!🙂🍀
They sure did. I felt so self conscious
I liked the way they did your makeup and hair.
Thank you.
I remember Mary Ellen & Erin wearing '70s jeans (Jordache?) during an episode where they were riding horses too.
Ha, ha, I'm sure you're right.
Just watched 'The Baptism'. What a good episode. Amazing how much more I appreciate all these episodes as to when I watched them as an 18 to 20 year old.
Thanks for the behind the scenes info. Interesting to hear what you guys went thru with makeup. You always looked liked you had good skin tone. ;)
Glad you enjoyed it
I didn't know that they were so picky about makeup. You learn something new everyday.
Yep
Judy, I just discovered you yesterday and I have been binge watching your Waltons series. I watch the show every day and I love hearing all the behind-the-scenes trivia and facts. You are a lovely person and I am mesmerized by your articulation, and the way you speak. Keep on making videos! 😘 all the best to you and your family.
Thank you so much!
I still think of you as Mary Ellen even now.
Ahh, that's sweet.
Interesting thought about the hair styles. Never thought of that.
Ha! Thanks for talking about this subject you answered my question from a few weeks back. Hugs!
You are so welcome!
Your so pretty Judy I always enjoy the behind scenes. Thankyou God Bless you Happy Easter🙏
Thank you- you too.
Hi Judy, looking nice
I injoy your videos so far on the Waltons.
Keep up the good work.
Since I started to watch your videos I've been watching repeat of The Waltons again on TV.
I forgot it was a wonderful family show.
Thanks so much
If I remember correctly you wanted blonder hair like Martha Rose and you experimented on Jim Bob in which his hair turned pinkish 😌
Ha ha
@@judynorton2598 I did the same to my dark hair with the popular selling bottle of Sun-In. Mine turned orange.
A classmate had her hair all dyed up so that she could be The Bride of Frankenstein on Halloween 1977.
Various colors were used. Then the dyes left purple streaks in her hair after that. Her parents sued the hairdresser
I remember this
@@georgemallory401 Same here in the 1980's. Mine was brass colored.
These are always so enjoyable. Always enjoy seeing you...
Thank you!
Thank you for pointing out the hair of the later seasons. It sort of bumping me when I would watch those, but hearing you acknowledge it makes me realize it wasn’t my imagination lol.
You're welcome
I Loved your hair in the later episodes well in all the episodes and I don't think anyone was paying to much attention that it was a 70's style because you looked so beautiful! Thank you!!
Oh thank you!
What a lovely woman you have become, keep them coming Judy.🇨🇦🐘🍁⚘
Thank you so much.
Thank you Judy for the videos! We still watch the programs and enjoy them so much.
You're so welcome.
Judy this episode was very interesting thanks for sharing looking forward to the next episode 😊
Glad you enjoyed it
Wow so interesting! You did look like you had eye makeup on, you are blessed with pretty eyes and lashes. Thanks for sharing
Thank you so much!
Thank You for sharing another great video!! I love watching these videos!!❤️❤️❤️
Glad you like them!
Good commentary. I know people who do community theater and have heard about hair and makeup from them.
It's nice to know that TV and theater use similar techniques. The comments about the lighting changing the makeup was god to know.
Costuming Cam also be a challenge.
Glad you enjoyed it.
A excellent veiw, Thanks for all you do, luv ya my favorite UA-cam channel! Judy sure appreciate you, Cheers from the North✌⚘
Thank you so much.
Hello Judy, I never ever thought about the hair styles when I was younger watching the show. I always did love the hair style of Michael Learned. It looked absolutely beautiful on her ☺. Thank you for this knowledge of the hair and make-up for the show 💖💖
You are so welcome
thanks Judy! I always new your eyelashes were without makeup! Beautiful!
Oh thank you!
thanks judy very interesting again i always look forward 2 your video of the waltons xx
Glad you like them!
Thank you for this, it was really interesting.
I bet it was really hard to have make up on your arms etc, especially for a child of Kami’s age.
I was really sorry to hear that the actor that played Jonesy had died. x He was great in The Waltons.
Yes it was challenging. Glad you enjoyed it.
Very interesting, Judy. And I can sympathize with you guys for all that you had to go through.
So much better now - products that aren’t so harsh on your skin.
Hi Judy, Thanks for the videos. Big fan of the show.
Wonderful.
