- Controversial topic alert!
A lot of people seem to think that being hired as a Data Scientist means that you'll deploy Machine Learning models and research AI applications. But in many companies that's not actually the case!
Here I am reviewing requirements and responsibilities for "Data Scientist" roles in some of the FAANG companies, choosing those as a proxy for big tech companies with a lot of data to play with.
The reality is that what you will actually do at your job depends more on the size and data maturity of the company than the name of your role.
As a rule of thumb, unless ML IS THE PRODUCT, in smaller companies "Data Scientists" will do all things data, often falling into Data Engineering, Analytics, and Product/Project management.
The bigger the company - the more roles are diversified, there you can find specialized ML Engineer, AI Researcher, and similar roles.
Yet, many companies still want to hire people who know advanced Statistics and ML as Data Scientists, even if they haven't reached the relevant level in the data hierarchy of needs ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
If you want to make sure you will apply your ML knowledge at your job on a regular basis, not just when you find a rare opportunity that fits business needs, look into Machine Learning Engineer/ Software Engineer / AI Researcher roles like those: (relevant as of August 2021)

Data Scientist roles for comparison require advanced statistics knowledge, but not necessarily applied knowledge of Machine Learning and AI:

There are some companies that break the rule, like Amazon, here they say a DS will be "Improving upon existing machine learning methodologies by developing new data sources, developing and testing model enhancements..."

If you want to educate yourself on the variety of Data roles and their importance at the different levels of the company, I strongly recommend you to check out Cassie Cozyrkov's blog.

Thank you so much for your video! it's super informative, for people trying to start a career in this field or soon-to-be grads, deciphering the job posting is often the hardest part and you did amazing. Hopefully you make this a series!
I must say that I love your videos and they are helping me a lot.
I started my studies in Data Science in April and university in June. In the first days of August, in a hackathon, where we developed a website for a NGO and I was the "Data Scientist" in our team, some of the mentors liked my performance and invited me to a job interview for one of the greatest private credit company in my country (Brazil). Now I'm hired as a Data Analytics Intern and I'll start in 16 days so I'm trying to learn everything I can until there. They have a very organized data roles structure and I see I can learn soooo much!! But learning by myself is a bit hard when I don't know what to focus on, so your videos are helping me to understant more how this amazing data world works, and I must admit that I'm loving it! Thanks for helping people with information, you're an amazing person Anastasia!
As a Lead Data Scientist, I love your channel! I am learning so many things about working/living in Sweden. Additionally I am learning your day to day life. I wish I had chance to see how Kobe Bryant worked just like I observed your life :) Thank you for that too :)
I hope that you are going to make yourself a meaningful/cheerful/colorful life :)
For this video; analyzing the job postings made me comprehend your thought processes. Also I was able to compared mine with yours :) Another also I love the fact that I am learning how someone who is experienced defines the titles of the data world :)
I can't stress enough how much I love your channel!!❤️
Hi Anastasia, love love your channel! Thank you for creating this super helpful channel and community. Quick question (maybe the answer won't be that quick :D) - how do you get an A/B testing experience if it doesn't exist in your role. My role is mostly in BI - which is reporting, and I'd love to break into tech and eventually DS. Thank you so much! P.S. If I'm lucky, I might get transferred to work in Stockholm. I've never been to Stockholm before, but it looks beautiful! (at least from google images).
Anastasia, thank you so much for the video! As an ML specialist myself, I understand really good what you are talking about)
I love your channel! I’m really grateful that you show what data scientists actually do vs just treat it as a buzz word to attract people. Also love your book recommendations 📚🙈
Thank you! 😊
Thanks for your videos, they are very good. Greetings from Spain.
Insightful video!! I am all set to make a career switch in data science after 30! :)
love your channel Anastasia!
Thanks for all the information you share is so insightful. I have a question , do you think a masters in data analytics (currently finishing a business degree) can lead to a job in data. I learned about data science recently which is why i want to take up data analytics im just unsure if a masters alone will help. I appreciate your time. Thank you
I really like the older Airbnb grouping of 3 flavors of data scientists - data analysis, algorithms, and inference.
Thank you so much, it is very informative for a futur data scientist ;)
Hi! I am studying Data Science at University and I can choose a course freely. I am torn between Business Intelligence and Advanced Machine Learning. I like both fields, the Business Intelligence course seems a bit easier, the Advanced Machine Learning one overlaps with another course... What do you recommend? I had originally chosen Advanced Machine Learning, but this video had me re-thinking my choice, since I have already completed a Machine Learning course
I am living this right now. Most of the time I'm in the aggregate/label, Explore/ transform and starting the optimize. Honestly? I think I like it better than ML alone, I've done it in research but I don't like it as much
This helped so much thank you!
Glad it helped!
@anastasia
I know basics python
I want to get into data science ,
Where do I want to start ,
Give me your advice.
Hi Anastasia , Excellent video again Thank You for your support.
As i requesed earlier could you make a video on Stastical analysis for real time projects.
I am good in excel,Sql and basics in power BI. Is it enough for me to change My profile from Sales admin to data analyst?
Do i need to learn complete python or some modules are enough like pandas, numpy and graph modules.
I graduated in Mathematics
please guide me to choose right path.
Hello! For your case the best advice I could give is to search for the jobs you’ll like to do, see which skills they require, acquire those skills that you don’t have, emphasize the ones you do. Going through the interview process is very valuable learning experience. I cannot tell you what you need to do. 🙂
@@AnastasiaKVL Thank you for your reply. I want to become a data scientist. Please suggest me a good book so that I can prepare for interviews and develop my skills.I will practice with some projects🙏
what is the best major for someone who wants to be a data scientist? Mathematics? Computer Science? Maybe something different?
hi!
I am exploring different career options. Kindly advise me which career route is more rewarding in IT field without College degree? May I enrol in Data science course?
what's the different of DA and DS , can a fresh postgraduation to be a DS ?
Side note: make audio volume higher in your videos - it is low compared to other videos in youtube
Anastasia, can you talk about how much coding is actually needed in a data scientist's work? I'm currently learning JavaScript and I played around with Python before and I decided that I was going to learn web development because apparently you can get a job without the need of a degree and that's what I need right now. But honestly, I didn't like it at all, plus I found some things while learning that made me hate coding even more, like when people care if you used your mouse instead of your keyboard to do certain things, or how fast you type, or how many spaces of indentation you left, and the fact that you need to actually study how to ask a question before asking because if people don't like the way you phrased and structured the question they will tell you it's stupid, downvote and close your question and never help you(!). In summary, I hate coding. I know data science involves coding, but I read that you don't need to be a pro software engineer to be a data scientist, plus (correct me if I'm wrong) from what I understood, data science is more like doing research, and to me that seems like more meaningful work than writing software. So I'm planning to go the data science route, get a degree if required, but I want your insight on the coding needed for this.
This is a very insightful comparison and contrast, Anastasia. Cheers! 🥰🤓😍
Is CS degree important to become data scientist? How much maths proficiency is required for data science?
Hello, in terms of math proficiency you need to be able to understand and apply most of the concepts from this book www.statlearning.com/. Depending on the flavor of the DS role, some concepts are important to learn in depth. The degree is not necessary, but it helps to prove your skill level to the companies you apply to. Some companies require Masters or PhD in computational disciplines for the roles.
Hi anastasia I just want to know do we need to study data structures and algorithms for data science
I have the same question🧐
Happie teacher's day!
Sometimes we find a job listing with PhD as degree requirement, does it mean that the company will only hire PhD holders for that position?
If it says it's a requirement - then yes.
Amazing video 🔥🔥👏 Thanks for sharing ☺️ Keep it up 👍
Анастасия, расскажи, как достичь такого уровня инглиша?
Wonderful video and informative video 👍👍👍
