I miss Oc! I have not been there in 4 years. I might plan a trip for this fall. Thank you for all the information that you share on your videos.! I collect ashtrays from old OC hotels and restaurants. One of my more recent ashtray finds was from the Satellite Motel!
The fall time is my favorite here, we call it locals summer. Everything is still open but the crowds are gone. That's awesome about your ashtrays, what a cool idea!!
Sad to see Roses Being sold it’s been in OC forever. Probably no more boat rides after your meal at the Angler the family always enjoyed that. Good work on the updates
Thanks for the updates! I'm sorry to see the Angler sold but I can understand it after it's been in the family forever. Hopefully not much changes. Losing another Dough Roller is tough because as far as i'm concerned there aren't enough breakfast places in OC as is, especially on a rainy morning in the height of the season.
Plim Plaza needs to put some money into their hotel. It’s never been upscale but it’s getting raunchy. Oh no! My mother in law will not be happy if Roses goes away lol.
I'm sad to see the way OC is going. Fewer small mom & pop operations and many more corporate operators. Not many small businesses start ups can do a $2.5mil just on leased space. So goes progress I suppose but no longer the OC of my youth.
It is sad, but OC is strict on chains moving in. Who knows what will happen...all it takes is a couple big investors to be on board to get something going. I'm curious to see who buys the sunsations and what they will do with it.
@ReelJayB Sunsations are ridiculous in OC. They will end up changing it. My wife is from the Eastern Shore and I've only been there a few times bus Sunsations seemto be on every corner
Wow. So many changes. When we first started going to OC, we always stayed on 77th at the Sungate (still do) but our teenage kids would walk to the Dough Roller for dinner while hubby and I enjoyed the Bonfire. That's a shame about that. But the Sunsations is no big loss. I liked it better when it was the Linen Outlet. Embers should stay open at least till Winterfest is over. Wow, the Angler is a surprise. But owners get old and want to enjoy their lives too. Understandable. I'm sure they'll get plenty of $$ to enjoy their lives with. Great update Jay.
Thanks Darlene! I'm curious who/what goes into Sunsations! They have it listed as retail or a restaurant...which is odd. Usually it's one or the other.
good stuff sir! Your video on closings when BJ's on the Water shut down is why I subscribed back then. Thanks for keeping us updated on what's happening down there!
Crazy about Dough Roller closing. It's always been my personal landmark to know that I'm around 70th xD Does anyone remember the fried chicken joint that King Kone replaced? It was called Dayton's. They had an ENORMOUS chicken statue out front. Still dream about that fried chicken.
The statue is still around, it’s at the Dough Roller on the Boardwalk at the inlet, but it’s on the corner of the restaurant property next to Trimper’s rides, so it’s not easily seen from the boards unless you know where to look.
Yeah, in 2002 how busy was this place!!! I remember it was “superfresh” where the acme sign is now! It’s 94th street. Do you live there? How is it going in general?
Yeah, a lot has changed! I live just outside of OC in Ocean Pines. Its quiet here but still close to OC which is nice. Overall OC has been doing great. Obviosly the pandemic years weren't the best, but overall it's been great. New developements, hotels being updated, you can tell it's trending in an upward direction. The best part is I like the town government and approval process because they try to keep it as the same traditional OC.
@@ReelJayBgood! Ocean Pines is a nice place. Fausto Di Carlo used to live there. The one who ran Ristorante Antipasti. I hope he is still around. Afraid to ask.
@@КлюевСергей-э5с Haven't heard about him in years, so I'm not sure if he is still around. Like most, I bet he reitred and moved to FL. The restaurant is of course still here.
I was surprised when you mentioned vandermeryer ice cream. They are by far the best ice cream ever. Bob and I were just there last week at their main store/farm on 404. I Highly recommend the lemon flavor and their butter pecan. Yummmm
The angler is one of my favorite places in OCMD I hope they keep it running, My girlfriend and I love to go have dinner and then take the boat ride they offer after. We'll be heartbroken if that changes
Sad to see my buddies place is for sale on 15th the Crab Stop. I would walk up there and stop to get take out food and crabs to take back to the apartment there on 11th street. He was a nice man that would be up for a good razzing. Food and crabs where reasonably priced. Best and biggest steamed shrimp around. Always said he played for the Baltimore Colts in his younger days. He had family working there not sure why they didn’t take it over. Gonna miss the old guy!! 🦀🦀🦀
Worst part is, even at $500 per night hotels, they are still packed to capacity. A lot are turning to rentals outside of Ocean City and traveling in. It's much cheaper and with uber, lyft, OC Bay Hopper, etc it makes traveling easier.
Would love to see the Acme center redeveloped. The parking lot is a crap hole. We do like the Coffee Beanery. It would be nice to have a new Acme in there. The existing one is way out of date and too small. FWIW, Acme and Safeway are the same except for the name. They are both owned by Albertsons. . We drive up when we want more than Food Lion offers. However with the new Giant going in on 50, we likely won’t be making that trip too often (can’t wait for the Giant!). Who knows they might just knock it down and put in a hotel. Vanderwendes coming to OC! Being an ice cream addict that is great news. 👍They have excellent ice cream and lots of flavors. ❤️ However, so does Popce’s in OP and the are closer as is Dumsers - love them both! BTW Vanderwendes does have seasonal places already in Dewey and Fenwick. I think they will do well. As to the Dough Roller, is it possible that just the real estate is being sold and that the businesses will stay in place with their leases? Unless the Dough Roller folks own the real estate. Do you know? You mentioned OC Eatery, we have been there a couple,of times, decent food, nice concept (kind of a food court) but it doesn’t seem to do much business. I think it would kill if it was on the boards! We could use more decent food places on there, especially on the south end, like Shenanigans for example. Nice update, thanks Jay 👍
Funny you mention OC Eateries not being busy. I never really see anyone there. Reviews are mixed so it's hard to tell if it's good. I believe Dough Roller owns the property. The new Giant is going to be a great addition!
My first job at 16 years old back in the 90's was at Super Fresh (now ACME). I remember even during that time the strip mall that was apart of the complex was a dump. It is bittersweet if they tear down the supermarket, but I am excited to have some redevelopment in this area. I just hope there will be some more restaurants and bars.
@@ReelJayB I did some work there at the start of the season with the camera and networking systems. I ate there a few times and it was great! I've got a special place in my heart for SoDel though. =)
The closing of another Dough Roller makes me shake my head. I think this is the fourth location. I can't recall if the West OC location ever opened it's doors before it changed hands. Is there a restaurant open in that now? Oh BTW did you know there was a Crofton MD location at one time?
Yeah it's very odd. The West OC location was open, they actually closed the OC locations in the winter and told everyone to go to the West OC location- that idea never made sense to me. Not many people will leave OC to go to West OC for dinner. They weren't open long, then OC Eateries took over. I had no idea they had one in Crofton, I knew of the Grotto's Pizza. When was the Dough Roller there?
Dont know how junk store Sunstations stayes in business. They are great for beach toys ,towrls etc. The cashier's at the 59th Street store are always talking to coworkers. Roses across from Acme were the cheapest place to purchase hand crab lines. We always shop in the nice clean Acme thw teo weeks we spend in OC. Hope they stay open if the land is sold.
I feel like Sunsations is a staple for cheap "forgotten" beach items. We go there for towels, etc. I bought some cheap sweatshirts there so I can use/abuse them and not worry about it. I heard the Acme was recently renovated so I'm sure it's going to stay.
Why are so many businesses in OC closing or getting sold? I've been going to Rose's since my first trip to OC in 1984. It was kind of like a treasure hunt you never knew what you were going to find in there. We were in Ocean City this past July and I told my kids I want to go in Rose's before we leave. Unfortunately we we're so busy doing other things we never made it to Rose's. That was probably my last chance and I blew it!
I have a feeling it will be a while before roses is sold. A lot of businesses change hands, it's just not a lot of people report on it. Most retire and just sell it. Mackys has been an exception, they had a management company take over.
@@ReelJayB I wonder how OCM will survive with the closing of a single Sunsations ? ...will the local economy ever rebound? Can they even support the summer crowds with only 274 locations instead of 275??
