- In the realm of renewable energy, a groundbreaking innovation is revolutionizing wind energy generation. The Dutch company Archimedes has introduced the Liam F1 Urban Wind Turbine, a significant leap in the pursuit of sustainable energy solutions. This video explores the Dutch heritage of wind technology, the technology behind Archimedes' products, the technical specifications of the Liam F1 Urban Wind Turbine, a comparative analysis with traditional small wind turbines and solar panels, insights into installation ease, noise levels, and Archimedes' remarkable history.
The Netherlands, known for its iconic windmills, has a rich tradition of harnessing wind energy. This heritage forms the backdrop for Archimedes, a Dutch company that draws inspiration from Dutch windmill traditions to create the cutting-edge Liam F1.
Archimedes' innovation focuses on advanced technology to enhance wind energy efficiency. The Liam F1's unique rotor design, inspired by the Archimedes screw pump, automatically aligns with the prevailing wind direction, ensuring optimal energy capture. Its compactness and low noise levels make it an attractive option for urban environments.
Comparing the Liam F1 with traditional small wind turbines and solar panels reveals its impressive energy generation. The Liam F1 generates 1,500 kWh annually, making it a powerful contender in the residential wind energy sector. It outperforms other turbines with its conical shape, high efficiency, and low cut-in wind speed.
In comparison to solar panels, the Liam F1's annual energy production is competitive, especially in regions with consistent wind patterns. It's designed for rooftop installation, and its low noise levels contribute to its suitability for residential use.
The history of Archimedes as a company reflects relentless dedication and global collaboration. The journey began with inventor Marinus Mieremet's vision to create a wind turbine that efficiently harnessed wind power and seamlessly integrated into urban environments. Patents were filed, and collaboration with companies like Esco RTS led to extensive testing and refinement.
The Liam F1 Urban Wind Turbine by Archimedes is a remarkable advancement in wind energy generation, combining innovative technology with efficient design. With a commitment to environmental sustainability, it promises a greener future as a game-changer in wind energy generation.

Biggest issue here is the price, at least where I am living. It's about 5450$ and electricity cost about 16cents where I live. (I already have a 7kw solar) I am also in an area with trees so at best I would make 400-600kwh a year.
That is less than 100$ of savings annually so it would take me over 50 years to make the money back on this investment. (Backfeeding into the grid nets you only 1/2 of the cost, so 8cents per kwh)
That's an outrageous price. And you're right about the trees they were showing it in full on wind
But the environment would see savings instantly.

According to my calculations, that's an output of a bit less than 200 watts per hour in a 12 mph wind. (1500 kw / 8760 hours in a year). This should be no surprise, considering how little wind is captured in its just under 5 ft diameter. Correct me if I am wrong.
according to manufacture at 11.1MPH wind speed it will generate the rated 1500kW
@@beach-time You only get the 1500 KW If (and that's a mighty big IF) the wind blows at that speed or higher 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. I challenge anyone to publish the actual voltage and amperage output of the device in that 11.1MPH wind.
Another concern: That design doesn't seem to have any way to "feather" its turbine (or to turn out of the wind?). This means that, in case of high winds, the thing will simply act like a sail and try to push itself off of its mount. Most other wind generator designs do have this feature, even the old 6 ft blade WinChargers.
12mph is pretty high for most places where people live. 6mph is being generos and reduces power outtput by a factor of 8. A total waste of money.
Hi I live off grid and use solar and propane. If wind was good we would use it. It is still a scam until we use it. We been using solar for 12years, NO ONE OUT HERE USES WIND. We get 60-80mph wind gust regularly. Wind is junk and I wish it wasn't

can't figure out why you would make an either/or comparison to solar when I see them as a team that would make both better together when storage is included.
el problema es que si lo pones en el techo, la vibración se transmite hacia el tejado y aunque la turbina no haga ruido, si sonará el techo
Yes.
I think it'll be a competition between cost of the F1 and solar plus storage.
this could be a good option for off gride or areas where there's extended periods of lower solar generatipon.
Solar is sop cheap adding extra panels is a good option, especially if you combine with use shifting so that you say run the washing machine, dishwasher when solar is generating, maybe pre cool or heat your home too.
As batteries get cheaper having larger solar systems will becopme a better optionb
I live in The Netherlands and also have solar panels. Our government is planning on reducing and even removing the 'netting' of power generation vs power consumption. In other words: Right now any power surplus we push into the grid during spring and summer we can take back in winter when there is little sun available. Our government wants people to get rid of the usage of gas. Removing the 'netting' (aka in Dutch as "Salderen") is a very bad sign for solar panel owners. We get suggestions like "Do your washing in daytime when then sun shines, or basically everything that uses electricity when the sun shines". That does not work in the winter period and if you come back home from your job it's already dark. I have mostly electrified the utilities in the house, except the shower. This Archimedes Windturbine would be the perfect asset to have during autumn and winter period, in times when we have more clouded weather and more wind as well. So what is the price of ONE unit? And if asked, can multiple units be installed? I love the idea of electric heating, showering, cooking and use no gas at all anymore. Especially in the winter period. This turbine would be a bless. (the only exception would be cold clear nights with -10C and no wind lolzz).
Indeed it would be good to know the efficiency of this unit compared to others. I was disappointed to learn this week, that a solar panel installed near Geneva, will only produce 20% in January, compared with July. It seems that we need to consider multiple sources when generating power?
They want you to buy batteries ... one suggestion is to use the excess energy and pump water upstream and when you need the energy on a cloudy day let the dam loose. The "net" is put back into the dam upstream.

Can't recall seeing a plane with Archimedes screws instead of propellers. I wonder if they've built a scale model. They should be able to measure the efficiency of their design versus traditional blades.
1.5 MW.h with only 1.5 of diameter? Is this number right? 1:55
I like seeing new innovations in propellers, the new boat prop’s case in point. I wonder how that design would work for wind turbines?
Yes, they make them already, and they are more efficient, for just the same reasons you expect. They are also very expensive to make, cost a lot more, and you'd have to make them really BIG to make them efficient enough to make a wind farm, which nobody has tried yet. For smaller residential applications, they could work well, but we'll have to wait a few years to see if they emerge as leaders in the area. Installing a wind turbine still requires more wind than you can get in most places, so it's still only limited to windy areas.
it's not an innovation, it's a scam...
that work poorly.
17W.
I would imagine it wouldn't. Just think of the wind turbines we have now. They fixed them so they will not spin out of control without the help of brakes in really bad wind storms just by spinning the blades so the wind passes by them without catching the wind. These would be impossible to do that by design and a disaster just waiting to happen in the first heavy wind storm.

I like the idea of wind turbines but can an open cage be put around the blades to keep birds out of it? Haven't seen this issue discussed!
I suspect it would be less of a big deal for a compact wind turbine like this than for ones with enormous blades whipping wildly fast through the air at birds' soaring elevations.
Looks good but I do wonder how it would cope with severe weather, and how it compares cost wise with solar?
Good question. Maybe during storms it would have to be facing the cone in the wind direction? But then the "changes in the right direction automatically" claim is kinda moot. It will also have to compensate for having no adjustable blades and no constant speed or momentum of long torqued blades.
Problem with solar is you have only utilization of charging half the day and then are limited by the intensity of day.....i have a solar system with battery and days on end of bad weather you slowly decrease the overall kilowatts generated...battery levels never hit 100%.....you have a windy area then a combination of wind and solar is better all round. Wind is what I am looking for a small gen to take up the fall off daylight loss. THink all night while you sleep the wind has been blowing and giving 500 watts per hour....to assist the solar.
Any tips for small turbine???
Great design. Thanks
Here in my house in Brazil I have a photovoltaic system using solar panels that produces IN A MONTH 1500 kWh. The same energy as he turbine proposes generates in a year. Just 22 solar panels + 1 inverter conected on grid. The cost? Here in Brazil (2023, december) around € 6.000 or U$ 7.000,00.
How about the batteries.
@@vyronperellis8125 the system is on-grid. It's connected on the grid and don't need and don't use batteries.
Well.. if you are getting this much energy. Is it not of use.. to move that factory into Brazil.. or somewhere like that ? Whereby your operational costs, is a lot cheaper? So they could register the main HQ in South Korea.. but then the factory to be in Brazil.. in order to reduce that 10k.... That might help us, a lot more, so that it can ROI faster..... There's a thought... And for an average household in the UK... maybe we need TWO form of energy production, and to produce MORE energy, that might help US... in creating further factories.. or even shops ! Lots of shops are now closed, cos there's an energy issue... so... it might just turn things around if we did that. Or to create a community chest, or community bank, based on what we produce as a community etc... (Which was how things used to run.) Or it might even produce enough to help our trains... and public transports etc...

@@renewedenergyhi can you share your email ID?
The energy which can be extracted from moving air is determined by the swept area and its velocity, and no fancy designs are going to change that.
Yes, the swept area and its velocity plus turbine effeciency. Betz’s law states that no turbine is capable of capturing more than 16/27 (59.3%) of the wind’s kinetic energy. This "fancy design" gets closer to the Betz’s coefficient because more kinetic energy is extracted across the sweep area. The design is great, but the price is too high. $5,000 for the Korean made standard model, drops to $3,200 for the Indian made model.

hello, can this wind turbine be used on the boat mast?

Cool device.
I have a solar system on my house but I've come to question a lot of stuff being disseminated.
For example: has anyone considered the unintended consequences of huge numbers of wind turbines (of any size) taking enetgy out of the wind? Take for example the numbers of wind turbines that are supposed to be built across the US. The wind has kinetic energy that hits the blades of a turbine, turning it BUT the wind leaving the turbine IS SLOWER and has changed temperature a tiny amount. It's too small to matter you say? But when there's tens of thousands of giant turbines and hundreds of thousands of small residential ones the effects aggregate into something significant. Remember, a single cars exhaust was considered negligible until there were millions of them.
SO, how is the weather going to be affected downstream of these wind turbines? NO ONE KNOWS! What's going to happen on the East coast of the US if the wind is slower? Is it going to effect rainfall? Go ahead, blow me off, say I don't know what I'm talking about but you'd be wrong, just as so many times in the history of this planet groups charged ahead and discounted warnings.
Thanks for sharing these valuable points. I can see a lot of questions you asked. I kind of agree with you that a lot of these potential issues need to be addressed. Every thing in life have advantages and disadvantages and in most cases there has to be some compromises. While I love renewable energy, I also believe a lot of work and research need to be done to address some of the potential issues that comes from some of the renewable energy sources. Your line about 'cars exhaust ....until there were millions of them' got me thinking that you have a strong point.
Anything standing in the wind takes energy from it, from a blade of grass to mountain range.
@@MichaelsCrazy yes, and mountain ranges change the weather downstream of them. A belt of giant wind turbines stretching across the Great Plains from north to south as planned will do what to the east coast of the US?
Unless you've researched the downstream effects, and know that they are not significant in mass numbers, are you qualified to comment with such banality?

50 watts? You can nearly reach that by putting a bicycle on a boat and peddle that amount together. 🙂
@@Snowwie88 Most modern solar panels are over 300W so even on a cloudy day 50W isn't that much.
As perovskite or silicon/perovskite hybrid panels come into use those values will only go up, and concentrator optics will increase it further still.
IMHO I wouldn't want a wind turbine anywhere near me where I can get swatted or cut by it in motion.
They are best high above our heads on rooftops, or even better on towers where the wind will be encountering less resistance from rooftops and the tree line.
Can this propeller be used as a ship propeller? Does it prevent cavitation?
cavitation is caused by amount of suctions. and water temp.
like a pressure cooker. water cooks @ 160 degrees because of the pressure.
so in a negative pressure water cooks in a lower temperature,
it does not matter what type of impeller/propeller you use. if you have 0,034bar. water cooks @ 26,4 celcius
and when water cooks, bubbles will implode in the pressure side of the pro/impeller
only thing that works. is a bigger sized imp/propeller @ lower speed. with a bigger suction area.
if you can double the suction size area. the pressure will increase to 0,068bar and water will cook at 38,7 celcius
(these numbers are for fresh water, just as example. salt water has different values)
It works good for making milkshakes.
*All practical tests show that small wind turbines hardly generate any electricity. And only at costs above 1$/kWh!*
There is hardly any wind near the ground. And it is also very gusty, which extremely reduces the service life of the systems.
*With small solar systems, you can reliably generate electricity for about 7-12 cents/kWh over a period of 25 years!*
Understood thanks. It seems to me that we need a way to generate electricity in phase with our needs, or phase our needs to our power generation? A hybrid approach perhaps?
One thing to keep in mind is that if it is tied to the grid then I will get that back which means I need a hybrid system; solar and wind... maybe cost too much then... ;)
