  • I am not a professional mechanic.
    2019 Kawasaki Versys X-300
    10W40 Motorcycle Oil - Conventional.
    2.3 Quarts with filter change.
    NOTE: Shortly after letting the bike sit overnight I noticed the oil level was not visible in the screen. I didn't keep track of how much more oil I added, but it may have been 8 more ounces. Now it is half way up the screen. I believe its supposed to be half of the screen minimum - so at least for me, I needed a bit more than 2.3 quarts. I'll post a follow-up on the second oil change and try to track how much oil it actually takes.
    I did my initial oil change at 300 miles on the ODO. I plan to do the second at 600 miles. Third at 1,000. First and second with Conventional Oil, Third with Synthetic.

    Thanks for the video. Figured it would be simple enough but it's always encouraging (and can save a LOT of time sometimes) to have a visual reference first.
    I love this bike. Such versatile performance, and yet the low displacement keeps insurance rates wonderfully lightweight.

    Oil filter manufacturers recommend using clean oil on the gasket. Dirt particles in the old oil embed in the gasket and can compromise the seal.

    • @uthe54
      @uthe54  4 роки тому +1

      That makes sense - I guess if the old oil is really dirty that could happen. I think the most important part is that the seal is lubed to keep it from deforming when you tighten it down.

      @nitrorc4life1 3 роки тому

      Though I use clean oil to lube gasket normally, I have used the oil that came out of engine in everything from lawn mowers, cars/trucks, bikes, tractors, ect. With zero negative effects. Taking into account you have a mechanically sound engine, ie bearings not faulty ect. It is just a matter of principle of assurance of peace of mind it matters.

    clearance between the headers and the filter precludes using many filters wrenches, even if you install a filter with a nut on it, still a tough angle to work at, but I've found using a leather belt - like the one you probably have around your waist - looped around the filter and through the buckle worked great and could be easily rotated for best angle to grip the filter body and loosen that SOB.

    I have the same bike. As soon as I changed the stock exhaust I gained more bottom end power. Now the bike wants to lift the front wheel even on 2nd gear. Acceleration improved noticeably. Also the stock tires are not very grippy. After a set of Pirellies that problem was resolved.

    The manual claims max 4000rpm up to 500 miles and then 6000rpm up to 1000 miles! Granted I know there are many different mentalities on how to break in a bike, and it seems impossible to keep a Versys 300 in the low revs.

      Mine is at around 450 miles, but to keep up with highway traffic at 60-66mph, it goes to 7000 rpm. There is just no way around it.

    Man, I did a oil change on my 2020 X300 a couple weeks ago the oil filter was a s.o.b. to get off, and it took over 2.5 qts of oil to get to the full mark, I put a dent in the flimsy kawasaki oil filter trying to hand tighten it ! Next time I will use a hiflo filter the one with a nut on the end !

    Nice video, but it is not correct to change the oil earlier, the first oil change time period is meant for the motor to "wear" and the imperfections of the motor to be eliminated, if someone changes the oil sooner he reduces the friction necessary for this action. The secret is not to accelerate rapidly, drive up to 60 miles ph and use all gears. For the specific model, I would recommend to change the front sprocket to one of 15 teeth (ninja Z 300), have a new chain, too to avoid uneven wear. It is bike for everyone and for everywhere.

    When I added the same measured amount back with my oil and filter change, it seemed like I had to add more. How should oil be checked for this bike? I know both wheels touching with level bike but should it be warm?

    • @uthe54
      @uthe54  3 роки тому +1

      I suspect you won't get all the oil out of the filter. But to answer your question, I suspect you should run it a little (so it has a chance to pump oil through the filter) and then let it sit 10 or so minutes so its back in the case, then check it level. It should be mid way, or slightly above half way on the glass.

      @@utoobia6872 So in the manual you ask to put 2.2 liters of oil to 2.4 liters of oil, only this measure gives a minimum level of oil in the engine dial, so I put in my 2.7 liters of oil q it reaches the maximum oil mark. When you change your oil, notice that you put what you ask for in the manual more on the oil level marker on the engine will give a minimum level then you can put another 200 to 400 millimeters that will reach the maximum oil level.

    Never put a dri oil filter back onto anything. Reason because the motor has to run dry until it fills the filter then starts lubacating the motor. Right tools for the right job!
