My good buddy of 50 years (from kindergarden) and I were set to do motorcycling adventures like you guys a couple years back. Sadly he passed from an unexpected heart attack before we could get started. Thank you for sharing your adventures.
I know how you must feel, my father died of a unexpected heart attack too at age 62, and the thought of all his plans for the future that are now gone, are painful. Just watching this video made me sad, since he loved driving to the Bay area from here in San Diego to buy old motorcycles.
You two guys are delightful. That was a wonderful trip. In felt like I was right there with both of you. I am 68 years old and recently acquired my Kawasaki x300 Versys. I try to ride it everyday. I have owned and ridden many motorcycles in my time but this little 300 Versys is by far the best motorcycle I have ever owned. I prefer riding it even over my KTM Duke 690 Supermoto. The 690 handles slightly better and it has 70 HP at my disposal but my little Versys is so smooth and pleasant to ride. The KTM has a single cylinder 'Thumper' engine that is not very tractable in low range speeds. In fact, it is downright jerky and ratchety. I only wish the seat on my Versys was more comfortable. Anyway, I subscribed to your channel and I am very happy to support two wholesome fellows having a great time on motorcycles. I am pleased that you guys maintain a high ethical standard. Not a single nasty word in this entire presentation. Thanks so much for that!

Crf 250 Rally is a very nimble bike in the city. It happily cruises on the highways at 100 km/h@6500 rpm. It even does 120 km/h but then it does not have enough grunt left for overtaking or emergency maneuvers (it can do 130-140 max with a very heavy guy like me on it) It is off road capable, forest roads, gravel roads, trails are ok but it is not made for pure off road fun. That would require a ligjhter bike with better suspensions and I would not want to scratch my beautiful bikes’ fairings to be honest. I wish it were 300-450 cc and had more power but then there is no perfect bike. It is very low cost to own and operate. Excels at back country road riding @ 75-85 km/h while enjoying the scene and the nature around.

Best bike review I have watched , great job guys . As an owner of an X 300 , I must say I am so happy with mine . Went from a 650 Vee Strom to the 300 . The approximately 90 pound reduction in weight along with some steering geometry difference is amazing in how it handles on and off pavement . First thing I did was build a skid plate and add a bigger foot on side stand . Had it to ADV June get together at Enterprise Oregon and myself and others were impressed how well it did off pavement , including a steep dry creek bed above the Snake River . I had been checking out everybodyies 200 to 400cc models for the last two years . Do not enjoy singles any more . Also , why do most come with a tiny peanut tank ?

I just got a Versys-X 300 2-1/2 weeks ago when the dealer called and said they were closing out the 17's to make room for the 18's. I couldn't pass it up at the price. I love this little bike!!!! I have a Tiger 800XCA too and while it's awesome on the road and VERY light dirt, the little Versys is the perfect all-around bike. I'm not that tall so the smaller and lighter Versys is exactly what I need. Mine already has a skid plate, crash bars, new windscreen and a 2" handlebar riser. This video is so good that as a owner of the brand new Versys 650, I’m starting to think that I made a huge mistake not buying Versys 300 instead... Cheers from Poland!!
I once detoured similarly in that same area but on the other side of the hills trying to follow short cuts from 101 to 1. I didn't think about it when i saw the military convoy leaving Fort Hunter Liggett heading south on 101 as i was heading north into the fort to follow the map. The public was still allowed to drive the fort roads and the Range Control officer told me i would have the roads to myself. I drove along pristine narrow paved paths across the fort to discover that my egress route was blocked by a padlocked military gate. So I turned around and cruised back through the winding hills among the oak trees as if i had the whole place as my own private track which i, in fact, did.. Best ride ever.
Man, that was too bad! I usually ride Nacimiento-Fergusson Road 3-4 times a year and I have NEVER seen the west gate closed. Went through it once with an escort back in the 80s. Hope you get to ride the whole thing someday...it's worth it! If you want to camp, check out Ponderosa Campground a few miles west of the gate. Make sure you also check out the other road out of Hunter-Ligget, Del Venturi. It turns to dirt about 15 miles in but the scenery back there is gorgeous. Dont wander too far off the main roads, as you might get stranded in a sand pit for four hours...
I just wish that people used dual purpose tyres on the Versys instead of the stock tyres When they test the bike off road, because.... If you have the chance of swapping the tyres, you should do it, to do a more realistic test. The same goes for street tyres on the CRF for on road testing.
Really these manufacturers...more so Kawasaki here, not the Honda as much...need to just use better 50/50 type tires, like the Heidenau K60 Scout. The Honda seems appropriate for the more off-road tires that are on it.
2 years in a row now I have ridden my CBR300R from Portland OR all the way down the coast to LA CA. The entire stretch of coast line is gorgeous but the section they are talking about is absolutely amazing.
I’ve watched the video again and again. It never stops being entertaining, but also inspiring. Affordable bikes being able to take you cool places with your friends and an emphasis on enjoyment rather than paper performance always gets me stoked to ride. Thanks, and keep it up.
I know this is old, but just now stumbling on this - when you guys got to the coast on the toothless old local trail - WOW that view is stunning. And THAT is why we do this!
Great Video guys! Would love to own the Versys-X 300 in my home country Nepal. Perfect for the harsh roads over here. Only problem is most new motorcycle models are imported 1-2 years later and it costs twice as much after tax.
That Versys-X 300 is like magic on wheels for what it is. I don't think I've been this impressed with Kawasaki for years and years (Ninja 400 is pretty good though). I think they have the starter-bike market firmly nailed right now. If I have a friend that wants to get into bikes and needs the highway capability/refuses to buy used stuff, I already know where I'm pointing them.
We recently got our hands on both these bikes and we loved them both. Very lightweight, a good amount of pep and overall a lot of fun to ride! Great Video!
Great route, looks so much more fun than just taking the paved road. I really like the Versys and you guys showed off its capabilities, would love to get a comparison between it and the Vstrom 250.
The detour route likey take by these adventurers to their camping spot was - North edge of Hearst San Simeon State park take (1) San Simeon/ Montery Creek Rd East. (2) Rocky Butte Truck Trail North (3) Burnett Creek Rd. North (4) Salmon Creek Rd. (5) Coastal Ridge Rd. North West (6) Left (West) onto Will Creek Rd. (7) continue Westerly on Los Burros Spur Road. At the end of this road is the picnic table and camping site they were at. It's overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Hwy 1 and Mud Creek.
I bought a 2017 Rally a couple of weeks ago. My other bike is a 2016 Yamaha FZ07. I really enjoy both of them. If I had to have only one bike it would be the Honda Rally. The seat is a little hard after a couple of hours of riding so the 2.7 gallon tank has not been a limitation for me. That little bike routinely gets just over 70 MPH so that's nearly 190 miles of riding. The furthest I've been in one ride is 120 miles and I was more than ready to give myself a little rest. I weigh 230 pounds (16.4 stone for my UK friends) it will cruise the HWY at 70 MPH with no trouble. So far that little bike is a lot more capable off road than I am as well.
Joseph Austin not according to the average European and American. But this goes to show that many cc under your a** are not needed to go for a more distant ride... I own myself a KTM Duke 390 and it's A TON of fun, screw the ones who belittle us...
Joseph Austin I'm from SEA too but the kawasaki is still small. The engine is still pretty small and the overall width of the bike is pretty small. (not saying that's bad though) Have you seen an R1200gs? That thing is freakin huge.
Small in engine.. yes... but not the bike.. if you ride the CRF 450 Rally have the same size... and in Indonesia the Versys 300 become smaller into 250cc 2 silinder.
Gear 1 up on the front sprocket. It helps greatly. I rub 75 to 80 on the highway and I have no complaints. Comfort is all subjective. I love everything about my 300x
I have been watching a lot of videos about this little Versys and this one is by far the best in every aspect. So congrats on this one! You certainly know what you are doing!
These guys were saying our boy looked like a punk :O www.svrider.com/forum/showthread.php?t=110182 I mean he did lol but it goes to prove that looks come and go but he's a wholesome guy underneath.
Must have been in the area about the same time you were. Was riding a KLR650, friend was riding a Harley. We were riding from L.A. Calf to Reno then to we spent the night in Hollister. We really wanted to ride the coast line but we heard about the 2 closures on Hwy 1 but we were not sure where they really was. Leaving Hollister in the morning we made our way to Hwy 101. We turned off Hwy 101 taking Jolon Rd, then to Mission Rd. getting fuel and lunch at Fort Hunter Liggett Army Base. Then we made our way to Nacimiento Fergusson Rd. It was a very small tight curvy road all the way to Hwy 1. OOPS we ended up between the two closures on Hwy 1. The only way out was going back the same way we got there to Jolon. and Hwy 101 for us. We ended up have a great adventure and ride. Would love to go back and take Nacimiento Fergusson Rd again.
@@sergioj.c.5632 No doubt it’s a super reliable engine, no doubt it’s a prestigious brand, but this engine it’s not for me. It’s a super happy engine, needs high rpm to deliver all the power. Ari Henning any chance you could share what road you first turned off from the PCH?? I just moved to this area and need more places to ride my little ADV!
lool some people take other things into consideration when buying a bike besides looks. They both have an application they will excel in. CRF if you're gonna be more offroad, Versys if you're doing a 50/50 split or more highway.
From what I can tell, the Versys seems to be a great lightweight commuter that can do offroading, whereas the CRF seems to be a great lightweight dual sport that can do commuting. I don't have much of any dual sporting near me, so I'm looking to grab a Versys 650. Just depends on your uses! Though I am really excited for the potential of maybe getting a CRF/XR 600/650 Rally, because that would just be beautiful.
So, now that you gents have left for greener pastures and you wont be "On Two Wheels" anymore, I can say that this was my favorite installment of all of your series.
Awesome video guys. That time lapse of the fog moving at 10:25 in the morning was amazing. As a California coastal dweller who is very familiar with the coast highway, it was still breathtaking to see things from your perspective at that campsite. I have flown hang gliders many times from similar sites and landed on the bluffs along Big Sur, so seeing that spot brought back some great memories. Thanks for all the great videos you put out.
Hi Ari and Zack, Love your videos 👍. Thank you for the effort from yourselves and your team. The videos have taught me heaps 🎥. I hope that you can continue to post many more videos, well into the future. Thanks again to all at Motorcyclist Magazine.

great video I think we are headed to a point where the 250 cc to 400cc will be the most owned bikes out there its not about having a 1000cc anymore ,not only for value ,but for how times are changing ,in getting more power out of the smaller engines ,I do think over time the versys would wear out faster used off road alot faster stock ,though I cant help but think seeing a 2017 with 900 miles for $3700.00 out the door ,an the fact I just bought a 2017 crf250l for $4300.00 with 64 miles out the door,I think will keep the versys on my radar no doubt,i still feel like I got a great deal ,someone go buy that 2017 romney cycles WV cycle trader $3700.00 is the price an a great one worth having it shipped it seems wel worth it knowing you got a great deal too ,awesome video guys
Great bikes...fantastic campsite...I'm sitting in my office working on a project to make my corporate masters more money...I'm gettin a bike again and calling it quits. ..I could feel the dampness of the ocean fill my lungs once again
My friend has a CRF250 rally, moved from supersport and is most satisfied, I left my shit job so I could earn enough on the Versys. My heart beats for kawasaki, because of the Z300 I made a driving license (even though I had money for the used CBF 125 only) Both motorbikes are great, I hope next season I will be on the small Versys. This video is a great motivation and i enjoy it :). SRY for google translate,:D
This is a great video for a lot of reasons. Both bikes are on my radar screen. My takeaway is that the Kawasaki is better suited for roads, while the Honda is slightly better suited for off-road. But both bikes are comparable.
thanks guys! ive always wanted to do this entire section! i got to ride the old coast road a couple years ago and loved it! cant wait to check out that epic campsite!
Back in 2012 my Dad & I did a ride from SF down to San Simeon through Big Sur, that year there was a slide just south of Carmel and we had to detour through Carmel Valley as well, except we hopped over to the PCH north of San Simeon via "The Nac" and if you're on a street bike that's an incredible road. It's almost a better loop than sticking on the PCH even when it's open.
Looks like Plaskett Ridge-Coast Ridge Trail. How they got there from below Ragged Point is beyond me. Burnette Creek Road?? But that goes through Hearst Castle land...
I've done the PCH cruise twice in my life. First time I was a passenger in a car, second time I was driving a convertible, third time I want it to be on a bike.
americans have so much hate for the "small" bikes. Those 250s are way more fun to ride than any 600 if you are talking about genuin off roading. And a liter bike well, thats just a pain in the ass, way to heavy, and you know it. You can abuse these 250 as much as you want, the insurance is cheap, you are less likely to have a really really bad accident and you can climb pretty much anything because they are shorter and lighter. (at least the crf, the versys is a different animal, just lazy move from kawasaki )
from what I can tell american auto culture in general is just about big blocks and straight line power. I doubt they care about litre bike's draw backs because they won't be doing much more than hooning on them. I'm sure once you get to actual off road riders and such you'll find even in america light weight is appreciated, its just the general public that like to live vicariously through their CC count surely?
The reason they put 250cc on crf instead of 300cc is tax policy about motorcycle in asia, for 250cc and below, the motorcycle considered as "normal tax", and more than 250cc considered as "big bike tax" and the "big bike tax" is just too much, and really affect the motorcycle price, and who wants to pay extra 2500 bucks for only extra 50cc right? Thats why. Btw, nice video guys! Really enjoy it. Cheers.

5.5" suspension travel!
5.5" is all you need my friend
LMAO
Lads, I have to say that when I see a 15minute video I think to myself that I'll get bored but your videos just fly by. Good work as always.
Another brilliant video guys. Thanx!! And proof that we don't have to spend a fortune on bikes to have fun.
Great clip guys! Especially the hill climb at 7.20! I've always loved the CRF but that Versys is more than capable!! Impressive stuff.
We recently got our hands on both these bikes and we loved them both. Very lightweight, a good amount of pep and overall a lot of fun to ride! Great Video!
This channel deserves million subs... Greeting from india🙏
Well done, guys. Love the small bike emphasis. It's about fun and riding, not always "what" you're riding.
If ya'll really want... You can take my CRF500L for a ride. Same CBR500R engine stuffed into a 250L frame with 450X suspension.
It's pretty fun.

You have my dream bike.. wish there was a company that just made em........
I don't own a motorcycle, but watching the two of you in your videos makes me feel like I am part of your adventures. Wonderful videos. Thank you.
Maybe get a bike, jeeze lamo 😏.
Great route, looks so much more fun than just taking the paved road. I really like the Versys and you guys showed off its capabilities, would love to get a comparison between it and the Vstrom 250.
If we could buy a Vstrom 250 in the states, they probably would. Why Suzuki doesn't sell it here is behind me.
Ok fellas you've inspired us all to get 2nd 3rd and 4th bikes lol.
(Hear that advertisers?)
Epic trip and thanks for showing the landslide! 😲
You call this bike "small adventure bike".
It's freaking huge for us south east asian. T_T
Joseph Austin not according to the average European and American. But this goes to show that many cc under your a** are not needed to go for a more distant ride... I own myself a KTM Duke 390 and it's A TON of fun, screw the ones who belittle us...
The Hyosung rt125 looks pretty cool
Joseph Austin I'm from SEA too but the kawasaki is still small. The engine is still pretty small and the overall width of the bike is pretty small. (not saying that's bad though)
Have you seen an R1200gs?
That thing is freakin huge.
marty mitch KTM Duke 390 is the big bike India.
Small in engine.. yes... but not the bike.. if you ride the CRF 450 Rally have the same size... and in Indonesia the Versys 300 become smaller into 250cc 2 silinder.
Motorcyclist, Fortnine, and PowerDrift have the best production videos I've seen. Always love seeing your guys' trips like this and the banter.
Dang it, now I want that Versys!
@@peterd3215 hi there Peter. What would you say is the drawback. Deciding on looong trips but I think a 650 is too much? Any thoughts
Gear 1 up on the front sprocket. It helps greatly. I rub 75 to 80 on the highway and I have no complaints.
Comfort is all subjective.
I love everything about my 300x
@@Chocolate_dragon If you don’t recalibrate your speedometer altering the final gearing or wheel size will give you a false speed reading .
I have been watching a lot of videos about this little Versys and this one is by far the best in every aspect. So congrats on this one! You certainly know what you are doing!
never forget ari's dreadlocks
These guys were saying our boy looked like a punk :O

I mean he did lol but it goes to prove that looks come and go but he's a wholesome guy underneath.

Two Bro's hanging out on a mountain discovering that 5 1/2" of travel is all they really need. I think that sub button is a pass.
Great video guys.
I go back and watch these guys all the time! I love their videos
u guys deserve more subs
I was thinking the same thing!
waduh ada bang tjr😍😵
Hmm bruh
Eh ada bang tjr
YES! You guys produce the best motorcycle content.
I was hating my Versys X 300 (after to ride only 100 miles) but now I’m changing my mind , I’ll give more miles of opportunity to love it.
Can you share why you were hating it? I am thinking to buy one, the only one thing that stop me is that one can not turn of the ABS.
@@sergioj.c.5632 No doubt it’s a super reliable engine, no doubt it’s a prestigious brand, but this engine it’s not for me.
It’s a super happy engine, needs high rpm to deliver all the power.
It’s a Ninja 300 with an Adventure Body.
Where are you located?
I can sell you mine, just 350 miles in city (just a few rides in Philadelphia)
3rd time I've watch this video all the way through(I'm currently saving cash for a versys x 300) Absolutely fantastic video guys!
This is probably the best motorcycle channel here with these two. Hard not to envy tho.
Also "oh a random guy told us about a place on the road we've never seen before. thank god we have a camera team and pro equipments and shit. and also a top tier drone"
Ari Henning any chance you could share what road you first turned off from the PCH?? I just moved to this area and need more places to ride my little ADV!
I would LOVE to get those GPS tracks! 👍🏼
I bought a new 2018 versys-x. And it's my first ever bike. And I love it.
great video guys..considering the versys for my next bike
Same here!
lool you have no taste ! the honda look so far better ! but this is just my opinion
lool some people take other things into consideration when buying a bike besides looks.
Kawis are great bikes. Got a Versys 650 for adventur touring =)
So, now that you gents have left for greener pastures and you wont be "On Two Wheels" anymore, I can say that this was my favorite installment of all of your series.
Would be nice if you guys could put a link or show a map of the route you took. Looks gorgeous!
Google "Coast Ridge Trail, Big Sur"
Jason Mizuno NOOOOOO!!!!!!
orangelion03 thanks! I came back here to my favorite YT video looking for details on this ride so I can do it too.
orangelion03 that is North of where the landslide was, they started south.
One of the best motorcycle youtube videos ever! love these two.
"5 and a half inches is all you've ever needed my man"
DEEEEAAAAAMMMMMM
every bikers dream maybe . .a journey with good motorcycle, great view and no traffic jam . .what a life
When you two attacked each other while mimicking the elephant seals I laughed out loud. Bravo.
Spurgeon Dunbar that was at least laugh 2 or 3 for me. The wide angle shot of them after the fire breathing comment cracked me up. I hate my job. ;p
Dude I know this is a year later. But if spurgeon is your real name. Epic name dude. Hell yeab.
@@cheifofsinners I know that Spurgeon Dunbar character... and that is his real name
I wish Honda and Kawasaki launch these bikes in India. Great video guys, beautiful ride.
"Man, I hate my job." - said these two guys.
Never.
You guys rock. You're my heroes! This was such an awesome idea.
Hi Ari and Zack,
Love your videos 👍. Thank you for the effort from yourselves and your team. The videos have taught me heaps 🎥. I hope that you can continue to post many more videos, well into the future.
Thanks again to all at Motorcyclist Magazine.
Howdy guys. This was one hell of a video. Also, eagerly waiting to see the BMW G310R go head to head against the Ktm duke 390!
Don't make me wait too long for that video gentlemen! ;-)
#LoveFromIndia
Travis Donald Stanley the G310R is made in India, so it very likely will sell there first.
Jordan Karim Nope. G310R has been already launched in Europe and America. Official report says that its gonna come to India in the last quarter of this year!
It isnt available in america... but we know what it is.
great video I think we are headed to a point where the 250 cc to 400cc will be the most owned bikes out there its not about having a 1000cc anymore ,not only for value ,but for how times are changing ,in getting more power out of the smaller engines ,I do think over time the versys would wear out faster used off road alot faster stock ,though I cant help but think seeing a 2017 with 900 miles for $3700.00 out the door ,an the fact I just bought a 2017 crf250l for $4300.00 with 64 miles out the door,I think will keep the versys on my radar no doubt,i still feel like I got a great deal ,someone go buy that 2017 romney cycles WV cycle trader $3700.00 is the price an a great one worth having it shipped it seems wel worth it knowing you got a great deal too ,awesome video guys
Great bikes...fantastic campsite...I'm sitting in my office working on a project to make my corporate masters more money...I'm gettin a bike again and calling it quits. ..I could feel the dampness of the ocean fill my lungs once again
I hope you are doing things you love today my friend, life is so short
My friend has a CRF250 rally, moved from supersport and is most satisfied, I left my shit job so I could earn enough on the Versys. My heart beats for kawasaki, because of the Z300 I made a driving license (even though I had money for the used CBF 125 only) Both motorbikes are great, I hope next season I will be on the small Versys. This video is a great motivation and i enjoy it :). SRY for google translate,:D
Honda should launch CRF300L
What about KLX320 🤔
2 years later and here we are
This is a great video for a lot of reasons. Both bikes are on my radar screen. My takeaway is that the Kawasaki is better suited for roads, while the Honda is slightly better suited for off-road. But both bikes are comparable.
Brokeback Mountain on 2 wheels....
thanks guys! ive always wanted to do this entire section! i got to ride the old coast road a couple years ago and loved it! cant wait to check out that epic campsite!
Why not compare the Kawasaki KLX 250 to the Honda CRF250?
Cuz they both weak af
Loved it! Haven’t had a bike in a minute but looking forward to this type of riding with my brother some day. Thank you for waking up the dream.
Wondering what kind of bike the cameraman ride?
wwyl Vespa scooter. .
Ari Henning great videos by the way. Love them all.
Rob G.
How is the seat? I understand it's hard as a brick but that's the only negative I've heard.
As the peak of skill the camera man somehow kept pace on an electraglide
There's a camera man? I thought they were just on You tube.
If only Honda made CRF500L ...
Wouldn't a CB500X with Rally Raid Level 3 be about the closest thing? A Mini Africa Twin?
Way above the usual review quality coming out of the US, and the UK for that matter. Covered all points, and a stunning ride. Thank you.
Guys can I have the coordinates to that amazing place at 8:11 ? Please !
Follow directions from an old toothless local and you'll get there.
This is the best show on UA-cam.
Adventure in the tent lol ;)
paweu_ and no showers. .!
Cheers.
The bird was louder than the bike
What an awesome adventure! Doesn't really matter what bikes you are on, as long as you are having the best time ever!
Guys are so much fun. Wish I had friends like you to share a ride with. Keep up the good work.
To be honest I'm in love with
MC Garage + MC Commute = Awesomeness
Keep it coming
