Forgive me if I’m wrong, but based on this video, most of the malfunctions happened due to user error. Improper grip on the gun, support hand thumb riding on the slide and constantly shifting and gripping the slide might be a cause for malfunctions. Noticed that the big majority of malfunctions happened to the same shooter, that might be the common denominator. My advice is to take some classes and retrain having a proper grip on the firearm. You do not need to constantly shift and rearrange your grip multiple times while shooting. Also, that thumb does not need to be elevated like that and it has no business being that close to the slide. The support hand thumb is meant to create support on the frame, not the slide. That is clearly a bad habit that hasn’t been addressed. I’ll give these mags a try, since I’ve had nothing but headaches with the Shield Arms. Thank you for the video, God bless.
Appreciate the thoughts, and you aren't entirely wrong. I definitely caused a few of them, and attempted to convey it where it was clearly my fault. As far as resetting my grip goes, my trigger finger and palms were bloody by the time we were done, and the guns were piping hot. Great video. Im at 650 rounds across 8 magazines through two different pistols 48/43x with no malfunctions other than failure to lock back 6 times on two of the mags. I trust these and had terrible results with the shield gen 2 mags.
Man I have been waiting for a video like this for these mags. I hope your channel can grow. These rounds are soooo squished in these magazines that I wonder if it is the Nickel plating that was the difference. I am torn over the 17 failures. If I want to get this gun. But if I shoot 2,000 rounds with my Glock 19 I have zero failures. One thing I would love to see for as a long term test- Load one of these mags up with 15 of your hollow points and let them sit in your closet for a year then run some tests to see how good the spring is. Anyways thanks for the time and money put into this.
For sure man, we don't expect perfection but 17 felt like a lot. That said, once we looked at all the factors, we felt that these were good for concealed carry. As I mentioned in reply to your other comment, there's a lot of upward pressure against the slide, caused by these mags. Definitely seems that hotter ammo is more reliable in them. Thanks for your comments and the well wishes 👊
@@aj_coutts Were there more failures at the beginning of the mag or near the end? Too much spring pressure will usually cause problems in the first shot when mag is loaded to max.
In addition to it's regular 124 HST, Federal makes some 124 HST that is +P, which is hotter than the regular HST. Not sure if Glock OKs +P in that subcompact model. You could email or call and ask them without mentioning that you're running the PSA mags. The +P would probably cycle better, but you'd have hotter recoil.
Good to see videos like this 👍 I want to love them but I had my own issues. After putting them through some range time, I tested them loaded for edc and let them sit. When I tried them only 2 rounds fed successfully and the rest were stuck. I needed to pull each round out until the spring finally pushed the rest up. If I needed them I wouldn’t have had them. G26 with G19 mags and xgrips is the closest I’ll get to a trustworthy subcompact with 15rd capacity. Shadow Systems CR920 with their 13rds was what I ultimately chose for slimline carry option.
Well it's greatly appreciated I hope your channel is successful there's a lot of guntubers I guess we'll call them that are way more popular then they should be your channel deserves success 👍
Love the music on this when you zone out. Felt like an old megaman updated track thats giving off good chill energy. Got a nostalgia hit for sure. Ive not had bad luck with my shield arms mags but having a steel mag release makes me not want to use factory mags. With these you save money on mag cost and on not needing a new mag catch. Thanks for testing.
Thanks Bob - it was harder than I anticipated to choose good music, so I'm glad you enjoyed it! Good to hear you've not had issues with those. Wish you were the norm, but unfortunately most of us haven't gotten good performance from them 😕
@@aj_coutts yeah its very strange. I'm wondering if its a qc issue. From what I've seen its been about 50 50 if they work or not. Do you mind telling me where you found the music? I cannot find that rockin jockin commercial vibes when I search Google.
@@Bob_Bob_B0b honestly it was stock music available in Microsoft Clipchamp 🤣 And definitely could be, but also there could be a design flaw that doesn't always interfere. Something that's not quite right, but doesn't always go wrong too
@@aj_coutts thinking about trying these out, I like the idea I don’t have to change the mag catch out, I’ve ran the shield arms magazines in a Glock 43x I used to have but recently acquired a new one this will be the direction I go in
I used to be a "100% all oem glock" type of person until my old man pick up a gen 5 glock 20 and had so many failure that for most ammo types we couldnt get through a mag. Now im under the though process of change anything you want on the gun but more importantly than anything put as much lead through the gun as possible to make sure its reliable in its current setup.
In my opinion 17 failures out of 2000 isn’t bad if the causes of those 17 issues were understood as to why they happened. I’ve had 2 issues with my g43x with OEM mags but I only shot maybe 200 rounds out of it. Those malfunctions were due to limp wristing which was at no fault of the gun.
We all agreed they weren't that bad. Some definitely were my fault, some were not. At the end, removing the ones caused by shooters, especially with the hollow points, showed these are very reliable magazines.
My "slick" mag just came in the mail yesterday, sits just as flush in the gun as the factory mags and slides in/out smoothly loaded or unloaded. Wish I could test it out today but of course all ranges are closed lol.
This is only a sample of one. I continued my testing and I’m getting a failure to feed every 5-10 rounds. In my opinion these mags are completely in reliable. Upon further inspection it seems like the follower is getting snagged somewhere. I’ve filed down the follower and the inside of the mag. It seemed to help, but I haven’t tested it yet.
I don't have one with me yet, but I think they are reliable and I greatly appreciate your time and effort ( 20% failed ) also several factors such as expansion due to heat-friction.
Appreciate the comments! It's been helpful to see and hear about others experiences as well, helps us see the bigger picture beyond just our experience
Hoping to be able to pick up some of these. I signed up for a back-in-stock alert with PSA, nothing yet. Will check again today. The 43X is so light on mass that makes it more difficult to control recoil than with a G19. So I'm hoping the extra 5 rounds will add enough mass to mitigate that a bit for those quick, critical, self-defense first 2 or 3 rounds, which of course I hope and pray that I'll never, ever, not ever have to send.
Amazing video, and I really appreciate the time and money investment that you spent to put it together. Great work! I’m sure the number of subscribers will increase exponentially if you keep putting out Contant like this.
I have some that have been consistently loaded for 5+ years. Not that you should do that normally, but my carry mags are basically always ready to go. So far they still run well
Appreciate the input man. This has been extensively discussed in this comments, and admittedly our grips did impact some of these failures. That said, the thumb wasn't the cause of it, in my belief. Plenty of advanced shooters choose thumbs high, and with good reason.
I finally got one for myself. So the first 150 rounds I had 4 failure to feed. It looked the same as your failures. I took apart the magazine, wiped down the follower, spring and housing and had no issues the next 100 rounds. I didn’t discover this till I got home but I think the primary issue is the back ridge of the round is getting caught as it exits the mag causing the nose to flip up. I compared it to the Glock mag and on the Glock mag the round slides out smooth. I took some pliers and widened the top of the mag and the rounds are now coming out smooth. I think this will fix the failure to feed issue. Time will tell. Need to do more tests. Overall I like the quality of the magazine.
The only reason you had failures is most likely due to weaker target ball ammo, or intentionally under-powered JHP's, these Dagger Micro mags are heavily sprung, so much so that its very difficult to actually load them to 15 rds, I doubt most people will get beyond 14, which is just fine. The way these in the 43X is with hotter 9mm ammo, nato ball, +p, and +P+ ammo until break-in is reached! I have seen everyone running weak ball have issues, and not one running nato ball, or +P have any problems whatsoever. Run hotter ammo to help compensate for that extra stiff magazine spring and you are most likely golden! The reason for this superior function of the PSA's over SA's mags is that the micro daggers were deliberately engineered to function inside a micro dagger, which is an almost exact G43/43X/48 clone(internally), the stiff mag springs will soften up over a few weeks and then you can run the weak ass target ball through them all you wish too. PSA has always manufactured nice magazines!
Great thoughts Chris, we appreciate you sharing them! We agree that weak ammo was a lot of the problem, and have a new video being edited now with hotter ammo and some new mags ☺️
I had the same issue with failure to go into battery on my G48. I found with a high grip and my thumb on the slide I was preventing the slide from cycling properly.
Great point for sure. One thing we all noticed during this review was major hand fatigue. 2k rounds in 3 hours definitely was more than we normally shoot, and our hands struggled to do their job by the end
@@Nick-zb4bp correct, and that seemed to be related to the ammo being lower pressure and the magazines having a higher pressure on the slide than "normal" (due to their heavy springs). The hollow point ammo has more pressure, making it easier for the slide to move against the resistance of the magazine.
I appreciate the time and money you put into this video but I have some questions/remarks. At least some of the malfunctions were user induced and by a particular shooter. I read in the comments an admission that gripping and shooting the gun for so long along with the heat affected his grip and even bloodied his hands which caused some or most of the malfunctions. If you were willing to spend close to 2k dollars in guns and ammo why did you not account for factors that would muddy the ability to point to if the magazines caused the malfunctions or something else, those being multiple shooters, multiple guns, heat, inconsistent gripping, etc? Could you guys not have spread out your shooting enough to avoid bloody hands and excessive heat that is not realistic in a self defense situation? Why rush the test? You shot 2k rounds and there's so many uncontrolled factors that the data is practically useless in addressing whether the magazines alone were unreliable.
Thanks for your thoughts. Some of these things didn't appear til hindsight. Given that the defensive ammo performed well, we feel that the review is, in fact, helpful and conveys good information.
Did you check for flashing and remove any/smooth things out before starting the review? 17 isn't acceptable, but if you had user/gun errors, I could see that. I generally expect a gun to shoot 2000rds without a failure...even without cleaning (though a few drops of oil is fine).
I saw a pic recently of some plastic flashing/burr inside the mag, so maybe look into that if you haven't. I only have 600rds through my mag #1, and 100rds through #2 and #3. But I also have a "Micro Slick" mag on the way to test. I trust mine 100% with my ammo (124gr AE and S&B as well as 124gr HST).
I have not disassembled mine, but definitely have heard of burrs from other people. Definitely think 124 gr ball ammo would have produced drastically different results on that part of our test
Great video guys! The failures to feed are concerning. Did you see more failures at the beginning of the test? Did the mags seem to get more reliable towards the end of the testing? Also do you think the ammo could have contributed to some of the failures?
Thank you! Yeah the failures got progressively fewer as we shot more. But also, once we switched to the hotter ammo pretty much all of them stopped. I think 124gr ball ammo would have run much better than 115
@@aj_couttsThat seems consistent with most of the forum test reports I've read. The people who did have (mercifully few) issues pretty much all had it happen on 115 grain ammo.
Well done video, I'll get hate for this comment though. I had about or maybe a few more malfunctions with my stock 43 &48s with stock mags. Went back to a glock 19 &26
Some of the malfunctions dont seem to be mag related. Now run 2000 rounds with the OEM mags and see if you get a similar failure rate. Personally i am extremely skeptical of after market mags. I have some of the 9 round g43 mags and i wont carry them yet because i haven't put enough rounds through them to confirm reliability. My g43 has only ever malfunctioned maybe 2 times out of probably 2600ish rounds. That is including shooting with the 9 round mags. So far they have been 100% but i have only put about 900 rounds down range with them. I ordered somenof the PSA mags for my 48 MOS, so we shall see how they do. If i can go 1000 with no malfunctions then i would probably be comfortable carrying them.
Good point, some definitely weren't! We discussed this in another comment thread further down. Nothing is ever 100% reliable, once I've cleared 99.5% or so I'm willing to use it. 2 of the 3 hollow point failures were likely from us shooting too much in one day and getting poor form. So, if I'm removing those, then we're at 99.9% success for defensive ammo with these mags. That's a HUGE increase over Shield Mags.
Have you contacted PSA? I had the same FTF as you. I contacted them and they asked me to send my pistol to them with the mags for evaluation so they could figure out the issue. They have my gun and mags right now but just called me and said they can't replicate the FTF. They also asked me to drive to their Summerville location to show the engineers what I was doing when the FTF appeared. They said they can't get anyone to send them their gun when they have issues and really want to work with anyone who will help.
@@aj_couttsi got my gun and mags back from PSA. The head of pistol operations kept in touch with me during the week they had my gun. They fired 600 rounds with no malfs. He sent my gun back with the original 2 mags and 6 new mags. I tested all 8 mags today with 300 rounds and everything is good so far. Kind of a mystery what was happening. They also sent me a T&E version of their not yet released MC-1 slide as a thanks for sending in my gun.
I just got a 48 mos. It’s a tough call going aftermarket mags. I really want the 15 rounds but at least now I have 10 that are almost certain to feed. I would rather get these over the shield mags. I’ll probably get a couple and run the heck out of them.
Sweet man, give them a go! I am sitting here right now editing an update video for these mags, which will publish this Friday (9/8) at 7pm. You'll be encouraged by our results
3 out of 1000 is completely unacceptable 0.3% faulure rate or 99.7% success. I would need more testing. I disassembled the two i got and ensure the spring was attached to the follower correctly, removed some polymer shards from the inside mag body, ensured follower movved freely. The dowl rod cycled the spring a few times. 100% reliable for the first 350 ish or so i have on them. My oem glock 43 magazine had similar issues actually.
I obviously disagree with your assessment on what is an acceptable rate of failure, but you bring up a good point about disassembling and inspecting. Thanks!
@@aj_coutts well, to be fair, the 3 malfunctions with the 124 was a light strike and barely out of battery twice (of I recall) which isn't bad, but the difference between 99.9% and 99.7% is a malfunction reduction of 66%. These are not adverse conditions. It seems like the rsa is an important factor, and the slimline seems to age faster. The 15 rd magazines put a lot more upward pressure on the slide, and that added friction reduces the cycling energy. The PSA magazine has the same internal diameter and length as a Glock 19 magazine, and the follower is (as close as I can tell) an exact copy of the Glock 19 follower. However the PSA spring is a lot longer and stiffer. The PSA spring is longer then a Glock 17 10 coil spring (I don't have a 11 coil 19x, 19rd spring to compare). I haven't done enough testing but I suspect these magazines would run better with a OEM Glock 10 coil spring. The Glock spring interfaces with the PSA baseplate and follower perfectly. The Glock 23 (19 length magazine) used the 10 could spring (Glock 17 spring) so the 10 coil spring in that magazine body dimension is proven to work. The stiffer spring solve cycling issues in the 23 with a flashlight. Just some of my thoughts. It's a great video, and you did a good job! Just odd I haven't had a single issue, and I've used some weak ammo to test. But I also don't have the round count yet.
@@dylanholbrook6239 great thoughts all around man, would be interesting for sure to disassemble these micro dagger mags and start swapping parts around. I look at that failure rate as just real life, honestly. Nothing works perfectly 100% of the time, and as someone above mentioned a high grip and finger on the slide definitely adds to the possibility of a battery issue when combined with this mag. Given than we were around 1500 rounds into the day when those battery issues showed up with the 124s, I can't help but feel as though they're abnormal malfunctions. At some point, I'm willing to accept one or two and just be sure I practice reloading, which I would do regardless of the failure rate. Thanks for the thoughts and remarks, we greatly appreciate them!
Does a semi-auto that never fails for one reason or another actually exist? What is the average mean failure rate on say a Sig or OEM Glock? And could this be considered that much higher? Inquiring minds want to know.
@@invictawarrior I'm sure someone knows the average, but I don't. However, that's the way I look at it, too. Some failure is basically inevitable, so I train reloads and clearing too.
A failure to eject is not a magazine problem, it's the grip slowing slide momentum. Some reviewers have these makeshift wannabe swat grips riding the slide locks etc that are misleading. I have 3 PSA magazines that I cleaned before use and they work flawlessly with FMJ and hollowpoint ammunition to the tune of 500 rounds. You guy's grip holds are your problem because I have seen similar malfunctions with different guns with people who use those types of grip holds. Once the grip hold was changed malfunctions ceased 100%
To some extent, yes. The lower pressure 115gr rounds had more failures, likely because of my thumb. Smaller platforms tend to be more picky, so I've since pivoted to keeping my thumb down on these.
Every time the guy in green draws, he's putting his support hand on his holster and bringing both hands together down near his hip. That's a potential safety issue if he starts going too fast and accidently muzzles himself. He should have his support hand resting on his chest and bring his primary hand up to his support hand.
Thanks for this. 15 rounds sounds great but a 1% chance that my gun malfunctions before it gets through those is not worth risking my life on.. I'll stick to the manufacturer provided mags for now. Maybe if the issues are addressed by PSA ill reconsider, but for now, no thanks
I’m so sold on Glock’s reliability that I trust my life on third party unreliable and flawed magazines. 😬 maybe I should just by a Hellcat Pro or X Macro with 15/17 rounds standard 🤷🏽♂️
appreciate the input! To be fair, this video is for those who are interested in upping their Glock capacity. If you watch to the end, you'll see that the majority of the issues were not mag related.
We shot it way less. Had issues with it locking back, but that all ended up being my thumb sliding down. For brevity's sake, I edited that out of the footage as it was clearly user error. But the day we did this, it definitely got the least camera time
@@aj_coutts thanks for the response, i had a 43x with gen two shield mags and had failure after failure. ended up selling it, recently just bought another 43x(mos this time) and just purchased two psa mags. hoping for better reliability
@@Humanperson917 I hope they're reliable for you man! Ours ran well, the more we look back, the more we see that hot ammo and less user error likely would have lowered our failure count significantly
There's nothing wrong with a thumbs high grip, although I will admit that combined with the extra spring pressure of the 15 round mag against the slide could have been enough to cause some of the malfunctions we experienced. Will make it a point to keep them down next time and see how it goes

Great thoughts, I agree completely. The reliability of the system is what matters the most!
At the end, removing the ones caused by shooters, especially with the hollow points, showed these are very reliable magazines.
its curious how the majority of the failures happen with one shooter
My "slick" mag just came in the mail yesterday, sits just as flush in the gun as the factory mags and slides in/out smoothly loaded or unloaded. Wish I could test it out today but of course all ranges are closed lol.
Awesome, we can't wait to test them too!

Definitely sounds like you're having issues with them 😕 to be clear, we had 4 mags with about equal failures between each

We arent interested in carrying the factory mags, so no. Trying to get more out of the platform, ya know?
I'll admit I was surprised by the 43X with these. Definitely ran easier than I expected, tho still snappy. Hope you never need those

Your failures happens because of your grip dear friend, your thumb makes friction to the slide try to change your grip. Great video!!!
Appreciate the input man. This has been extensively discussed in this comments, and admittedly our grips did impact some of these failures. That said, the thumb wasn't the cause of it, in my belief. Plenty of advanced shooters choose thumbs high, and with good reason.

@@aj_coutts yeah I watched the whole video. 17 is a lot.
@@epps1217 gotcha. Try them for yourself, you may find different results
Very interesting thoughts. We'll have to look at that and compare them. Hope the mags keep running for you!
Thank you
Appreciate it, happy to help!
Nice, can't wait to get mine in the mail this week. (took forever to ship)
I've heard times are bad, glad we ordered when we did. Hope they run great for you!
@@aj_coutts lots of the failures happened at the very begging tho right?
@@Nick-zb4bp correct, and that seemed to be related to the ammo being lower pressure and the magazines having a higher pressure on the slide than "normal" (due to their heavy springs). The hollow point ammo has more pressure, making it easier for the slide to move against the resistance of the magazine.
Thanks!
Good thoughts!
We did not check for flashing.
Yes, it would be higher than acceptable, but the number alone doesn't tell the story well
I saw a pic recently of some plastic flashing/burr inside the mag, so maybe look into that if you haven't.
My slide wasn't locking back, so I took it apart and sure enough there was a burr hanging.
@@cincinnatiking8008 great info!

After watching a million Micro Dagger review/failure videos, I may wait for "gen 2" to come out and see if PSA has worked out any of these issues...
Seems like a solid strategy. Certainly there is some for improvement

Once the grip hold was changed malfunctions ceased 100%
appreciate your comments 👍👍
Can’t say for sure but looks like your grip with your left thumb is riding the rail and inducing most of the malfunctions.
To some extent, yes. The lower pressure 115gr rounds had more failures, likely because of my thumb. Smaller platforms tend to be more picky, so I've since pivoted to keeping my thumb down on these.
