Download Epicurus's Letter here: weltgeist.tv/epicurus We decided to do something different from the usual Schopenhauer and Nietzsche videos. Are you guys interested in Greek philosophy? We feel like Epicurean philosophy is under-appreciated nowadays, probably because Stoicism is so popular. What do you think?
Honestly what I'm expecting from this channel are videos on hard-to-understand philisophers such as Heidegger, Husserl, Kant, existentialists, etc. For example your videos on Nietzche and Schopenhauer were so good and I'm hoping to get a nice introducion on those other philisophers from you :D Hellenic philisophy is already mainstream in youtube and given how well you guys explain I would love to have videos on the aforementioned philisophers. Thanks!!
I love the more up to date philosophers, but it seems we must learn about the ancients in order to fully accept our own way in the world? And yes I do know that stoicism is rather too popular but I would love to hear your take on it!
Thank you! I have been an Epicurean since my teens. Epicureanism has giving me peace and happiness. People don't understand how Epicureans don't fear death or gods or superstition, why we are so free and how we manage self-control and peace of mind (work and discipline)
These are the exact things I am stuck inside of, a constant fear, and it's hard to get out of this, I have started changing it, hope I have the strength to go through this.
@@omlachake2551 it is a challenging path. We must start with observation (as Lucretius said in de rerum natura) but not any observation, we start with ourselves and the world around us. Without any judgement, just plain observation. That helps a lot! And then we start seeing things as they are, not judging them by their effect on us or our lives. Then, we continue accepting things. If something is "bad", we accept it. If something is "good", we accept it. And then, when we decide what to do, knowing that sometimes we don't get to change things but let them go. And what we can change, we will. And always remember, you can find beauty everywhere. That's the truth about epicureans, we find beauty (pleasure) everywhere - in darkness, in light, in pain, in happiness... There's always beauty. Once we learn to see it, feel it, and enjoy it, we are free.
@@keylavalle-palma6139 you described exactly what was in my mind, but I couldn't put in words, Accepting things. Thanks. Any books that I could start with?
@@omlachake2551 honestly, I think it will be better to explore epicureanism though videos - at least to begin with it. Epicurus and Lucretius books can be challenging sometimes if we are facing hard times. Let me check some links and I will come back asap. I'll leave you with this quote, though Don't fear god, Don't worry about death; What is good is easy to get, What is terrible is easy to endure
This avoidance of pain is such an interesting facet of Epicureanism, especially when considering its cultural context of classical Greece. During the time of Epicurus, the most read book was the Illiad. I doubt it would have been a Homeric value to avoid pain for the 'good life'. Imagine the great Achilles proclaiming that he wouldn't want to fight simply because of the pain it would bring him. If he said this to his cohorts, they would surely have laughed at him! Pursuing glory at a tragic cost to onself was the fate of many Greek heroes, and yet they were celebrated _despite_ this. Perhaps, though, Epicurus had reservations about this cultural aspiration of achieving _arete_ . Perhaps, for him, striving was simply too painful and therefore he had to be more 'pragmatic' in his philosophy.
Yes, "avoid pain" might sound like obvious advice today, but we have to remember that the Greek ideal was the Homeric hero. Achilles choosing a short, but glorious life over a long and comfortable one.
@@WeltgeistYT It makes one wonder though, if this advice is obvious today, then perhaps that is because there is no real sense of 'glory' in modern culture anymore. Perhaps we avoid pain because we lack any real reason to do otherwise, because nothing offends our 'honor'. Maybe we lack the 'why' for which we could bear any 'how', to use a Nietzschean turn of phrase. But what are your thoughts on this? Should we be passed, or even above, such aretaic concepts?
Very colorful and interesting presentation, Epicurs was certainly one of the past thinkers worth studying, death for sure is nothing to worry about it will come either way so why to even worry about something what is well out of your control. Also overthinking never leads to anything good that's for sure. Also pain in a lot of cases is more in our imagination, because us focusing on it intensifies it.
What did Nietzsche think of Epicureanism? I only know of his comparison of stoics and epicureans, and in Human, All Too Human he writes that science continues to disprove christianity while proving epicurus' philosophy, can't remember which page specifically

Nice job, effective use of imagery, great breakdown of the important points.

Great video. I was wondering what were the Stoics and Epicureans view on human nature and how did they differ? Thanks
Very good ! Thanks !
So many small ideas that coalesced into a grand and practical philosophy. The fact that he isn't taught more borders on criminal
Please more on Epicurus.
Can you pls lemme know where you got these photos. Particularly the first two skull photos. Thanks
More please , and if you can add the Marxist theory connection to Epicurus and its transformation to communism.thank you
Just started trying to read epicurism...in Nepal it was impossible to find books but next week .. hopefully I will get one...very curious for epicurus
Genius. Except for the 4th section that is very debatable.
Very informative and helpful thanks
Excellent!
danke! very useful talk!
Great video. Would definitely like to see some more videos on Epicurus. (I think you're pronouncing his name wrong, though--it's "eh-pih-KYUR-ihs")
It’s to choose if I should go for the Greek or Latin pronunciation, or the anglicized one.
@@WeltgeistYT Oh I see..so you are using the Greek pronunciation, then? In any case, thanks very much for these videos and looking forward to more!
Interesting.
Exercise and peace of mind are das way to a good life.
Was that life ?
