Not all cops are bad but monsters like Lazarus seem always to be 'protected' by fellow officers and given leineincy...thus the early retirement package (disgraceful) vs. being fired and barred from ever being a cop again.
Sherri's family always believed it was Lazarus who had killed their daughter. They told investigating police first thing when asked if they knew of anyone who might want to hurt Sherri that Lazarus had threatened her, that their daughter was afraid of her and that they believed she was the most likely culprit. The cops covered everything up and went with the "two random black guys that no one ever saw". Also Sherri's husband was a faithless creep who was totally unworthy of her. The worst thing that ever happened to that woman was meeting that cheat and liar.

I watched the full interrogation & her eyes are as scary as hell. And John’s continued involvement with this unhinged lunatic contributed to his wife’s death. Which is why John said knowing she was murdered brings him to his knees. That poor girl died because he partner was a cheat and because he was cheating with a psycho.
He definitely wasn’t worth dying over. So sad his beautiful fiancé didn’t split when he insisted to just “ignore” a clearly devastated and unwell paramour.
My point is John maybe was completely afraid of the psycho look Stephanie has, he didn't know how to end the relationship. But he should have acknowledged that he was afraid of her during the trial. Maybe he did not out of pure shame; he didn't want to look like a weak man.
Victim blaming. When women get with violent men and pay the consequence it’s “no woman deserves this” When a man does it, it’s his fault. Misandry in full flow
I was already thinking "I don't like this John guy" when he didn't leave work early to check if his wife was okay when there were pretty clear signs something was wrong. But then... everything else.

You're right, the police not investigating her because she was a cop, and, afterwards letting her have access to a case she'd been involved in, is not good and is offensive on every level!
I've been studying this one for a while and I cannot fathom Sheri's husband demeanor in this whole situation. I think that somehow he knew who was responsible but never did anything about it. Chilling...
Gotta say, those 2 Detectives here were masterful. I don't know how they managed to make their Investigation seem more like a random observation and less like an intense interrogation, but they succeeded in doing just that. They did what they had to do in order to make the recorded interrogation stand up under scrutiny after being first found to be admissible in court. Everyone did their due diligence and Truth will out sooner or sometimes considerably later. But always in perfect concordance with God's timing to coordinate multitudinous happenings with each other
One of my psych professors told the class that many police are antisocial personality disordered people who have managed to find a niche and keep their employment.
It was pretty entertaining! True Crime Loser does a couple great videos on it. The Dahlia Dippolito, Stephen McDaniels, and Russell Williams interrogations are also super entertaining if you guys want more.
This isn't related to the video but I want to thank you, Dr Grande. I've had a bipolar diagnosis for about 5 years now and nothing ever seemed to help but then I found you and I resonated with your videos on BPD. Thank you for your content. I would probably be stuck in the same, barely stable, loop the rest of my life if it wasn't for you ❤
"Almost every famous case" is overstating things to the point of ridiculous, but I've definitely noticed more mistakes that are hard to explain than I expected before I started watching True Crime videos
In all those years between the murder and her arrest, I imagine she did a lot of damage to anyone who was unfortunate enough to have crossed paths with her.
I'm 6 minutes in and I left a comment at the start of the video because I'd heard about this case before and I said the exact same thing as you. Surely some of the cases she was involved in prosecuting would now have grounds for appeal after this came out?
@@roryslaine7896 Depends. There was a Florida state trooper who committed a murder on duty. He got convicted. Even after that, he was called to testify at the DWI trial(s) of people he had arrested.
Actually she did alot of good things. Never committed a crime again. To me it's a sad thing when a man jacks someone around so bad over and over again and then acts the victim when they snap.
She was a sociopath, pure and simple. And John was playing each of those women against each other like some vicious game and was no better than Stephanie at this point. Revolting.
"John was playing each of those women against each other like some vicious game and was no better than Stephanie at this point." I'm not convinced of that. John's anguish at having been a causal factor in Sherri's murder seemed genuine to me (see footage of his statement at trial). He didn't just say it was a mistake but clearly felt genuine remorse even a quarter century later. I think it does say something about the casual attitude many men take toward sex, even while married or engaged. The breach of trust is real and can have devastating consequences. If someone wants to be polyamorous, the absolute minimum to be ethical about it is to have the informed consent of all parties. But I'm convinced he knows that now and regrets it. Stephanie was clearly manipulating him, so I can understand that he fell for this briefly after the murder. John was convinced that she couldn't and wouldn't have done it. So another mistake of his was excessive trust of police just for being police. She was police, so he thought she couldn't have done it, and the investigating officers backed that up by ruling her out despite the evidence. "She was a sociopath, pure and simple." I leaned toward BPD myself, though I'm grateful that Dr. Grande pointed out that there's not enough info to confirm a pattern. My reason for leaning that way is just her histrionics in general -- not just about losing partners, and committing such a senseless murder, but also how she reacted during the interrogation. "This is insane!" over and over. It just reminded me of BPD people I've encountered. Sociopaths I've seen in interrogations seem to be able to stay much calmer and calculated. I could be mistaken about both, of course. I'm not a psychologist.
John is “no better” than the person who murdered somebody in cold blood? That’s really your opinion? No distinguishing between John and Stephanie Lazarus at all? Seems kind of nutty to me.
@@valeriebellomo3573 I don't know the Stephanie was a good looking woman when she was young--tall, athletic, smart. She had a lot going for her, but she had this crazy side she managed to keep under wraps most of the time. I come from a LE family and a lot of cops are adrenaline junkies, especially the young ones. Don't know why that wouldn't include the women too. From a guy's perspective, she was probably a mighty exciting lay and John thought if he acted like this was just a FWB thing then she'd get on the same page too, even after she was obviously stalking his girlfriend. Men and women are different that way. He was in denial about the potential danger he was putting Sherri in, probably didn't think a woman would ever get violent like that.
"Giving Stephanie Lazarus a "pass" because she was a police officer is offensive to logic and reason"...….... It's great how you explore a topic, but the analysis is presented with brevity and no unnecessary drama. I remember reading an article about this and Sherry suffered brutal multiple facial injuries as well as being bitten. I find it unbelievable that the police would not even suspect this attack as a very personal one, but as you mentioned, the police didn't seem interested in pursing any leads other than the robbery. Keep up the great work Dr. Grande!
Well how would that have looked to the department not to mention all the higher ups and so on and so on . It was pretty obvious they were looking elsewhere to same themselves the political heat .
This happened in 1986. About a month and a half before I moved there. There were a number of scandals involving the LAPD so I’m not surprised that Lazarus was able to escape justice as long as she did.
Unpopular opinion, The man was a POS and it is also his fault that his wife was killed. He should have cut that psycho out a long time ago, yet he gave her some good Closure at some motel room every few days.
Not unpopular at all. Ruttens sexual greed was a huge factor in spurring on an unbalanced and very dangerous woman. There's a similar case in England, and the cheating male who spurred on the violent female, while never a suspect, was held accountable in the aftermath.

Her interrogation was perhaps the most damning piece of evidence against her. Easily the most bizarre reactions to questions ever and definitely not how an innocent person would act.
That's not a result of the character of cops but of how they're organized. We're humans. We form social groups. We tend to protect each other and we expect to be protected by our peers. The challenge is change how policing is organized so that cops feel more accountable to the community and less like an occupying army.

Excellent Doc. The Stephanie Lazarus interrogation is up on my list of favs. Imagine thinking you had gotten away with murder after 20+ years, only to have it pulled from under you in a second. You can literally see her panic with severe anxiety she was likely experiencing. I’ve always wondered if she went to sherri’s place that day with the intent to murder her. If so, why use her gun? Anyways, glad she’s in prison now.

John's behavior is hard to understand without knowing him but it's also difficult to dismiss that this didn't contribute to Stephanie's violent actions imho.
What makes the interrogation video priceless is that she thought she had gotten away with it. Had she been interrogated a week after the murder she would have been more in control. After so many years she was caught off guard because the idea of her going to jail had been eliminated and she thought she would live the rest of her life free as a bird.
When I first saw her interrogation video I didn’t understand the story yet so I thought she knew from square 1 that she was coming in for an interrogation. So I thought this was all her planned answers. So - I was shocked when I realized that she thought she was there to give advice!! Then to find out she was a cop- oh my god- let me tell you this was absolutely fascinating to watch going in 100% blindly. The interrogators did an AMAZING job and getting her to spill beans! And all for what? They already had their proof. Friggin genius.
John Rutten didn't have nerve to tell crazy Lazarus no. He should have been more clear and forthright about his intentions and his limits. His actions and his faint hearted efforts more than likely put his new wife in jeopardy.
he actually blames himself in his victim impact statement. It's like... weird. He's crying his eyes out, and it seems sincere, but like dude, you cheated on her. I can only see it working as trying to have both and then falling into stephanie's arms after sherri died, seeking comfort.
I've read a book and watched a lot of videos of Lazarus. You're overview is the shortest and most succinct of a convoluted situation I've seen. I'm not an expert, but I agree 100%. The retirement to allow her to hold onto her income by the PD shows how they still were trying to support her.
I didn't know about her until she came up on the JCS channel videos. Watching her entire initial interrogation video was disturbing...like, such a front being played out against reality.
There were a lot of offensive facets to this case. It was nice of John to have closure sex with the victim's stalker. It was sure nice of the police to believe John-the-player on his word. Ugh. Stephanie was emotionally unstable when John was using her, but I don't think he knew how bad. Not ending the intimate relationship gave Stephanie a reason to "stick around." Sherri was remarkable. She was attractive, intelligent, admired, and had John's commitment to her in print. I'm assuming this is why the only stolen item inside the home, was their marriage license.

It was reported that many of the wounds to Sherry's body were inflicted AFTER her last breath. That we have police officers like Lazarus out there is difficult to fathom.
Is it really that hard for a guy to just NOT sleep with a woman who they can clearly tell is obsessed with them and mentally unstable? I'm in no way victim blaming but I can't help feeling like some of these tragedies could be avoided or postponed long enough to be avoided if the men hooking up with these women would think with their brains and not what is between their legs!
@@DeCoR18 Not really. That is why a crime investigation looks at the personal life closely of all the involved parties. If John had disclosed that he recently had sex with Lazarus, you can bet that the investigation would have focused on her, and would have had to eliminate her from the suspect pool. The riskiness of a victim's lifestyle is a very important piece of an investigation as it tends to shed light on who would have a motive to harm them. Love/sex triangles, blackmail, drug and gambling debts, etc. are classic motives for murder, and help solve crimes. There really are only a few motives for murder: revenge, money, love/jealousy, and thrill ( sexual homicide, sexual sadism).

Just like the previous time she had broken into their home and Sherri found her in the living room, she probably broke into their house again and maybe didn't plan to kill Sherri. But this time, Sherri fought her and ended up getting murdered. The book about this crime, "The Lazarus Files" is excellent. And Sherri's husband John behaved despicably! He really didn't seem to give a damn that this sociopath/psychopath was stalking his wife and harassing her.

Interesting, particularly your pointing out the parallel between Lazarus and Arias. I don't think the guys who interviewed Stephanie Lazarus were bumbling, however--I thought they skillfully and inexorably escorted her down the path her own hubris created.
It took her over 46 minutes to request an attorney. I don't know that anything she said in that room convicted her, but she didn't help herself. Also I didn't hear John accept any responsibility for creating the situation.
It would be interesting to look at the number of police officers who commit serious offences in relation to the general incidence among non police and the psychology of those officers who offend

What I've realized is that sometimes sociopaths have this crazy look in their eyes. I've witnessed this several times. If someone's eyes look like this even for just a second...RUN. This is a dead giveaway of a sociopath!
It’s called sanpaku eyes. It means “3 whites visible” when a person is looking straight out at eye level there shouldn’t be any white visible above or below the iris. If it’s above like Charles Manson, Stephanie Lazarus, look thru mugshots you’ll notice several murderers & psychopaths with this trait. If the whites are visible below the iris then that shows an unbalance from within and will usually manifest in an autoimmune disorder and chronic illness. Think of John f Kennedy, (Graves’ disease) princess dianna, (thyroid disorder and depression) these peopl usually die younger than average. Billie eilish since another with lower sanpaku. So in summary... ~Whites visible above iris = danger to people in their lives, psychopath, sociopath, behaviors and will destroy the lives of others. ~whites visible below the iris=danger to self, & destroy life from within from chronic illness, unbalance in ,most aspects of life throughout life. I’ll post a link in a min.

"John was playing each of those women against each other like some vicious game and was no better than Stephanie at this point."
I'm not convinced of that.
"She was a sociopath, pure and simple."
I leaned toward BPD myself, though I'm grateful that Dr.
In my opinion, John is also responsible for Sherri's death. He had to have known who killed her.

I don't think so; I believe it has more to do with the "insider" environment, "Us against the world," as unions often spew. But, if you view many of the available videos here on UA-cam dealing with cops, Lazarus' character is no different from the many cops shown on UA-cam... they're all arrogant, rude, disrespectful and display overly aggressive behavior... across the USA.
Mine2..and Russell williams(Canada) the two of theme my top 2. No conscience, not a thread. I can’t get a lie out without laughing.let alone lie as professionals👍🏻
My two favorites as well!!
"Not consistent with intelligence." Lol I laughed my ass off. That's the nicest, most clinical way of saying an action was stupid I've ever heard.
I would've gotten straight A's back in school if my texts had been half as structurally immaculate as your videos.
John's behavior is hard to understand without knowing him but it's also difficult to dismiss that this didn't contribute to Stephanie's violent actions imho.
It's not hard to understand. Men are selfish beings.
What makes the interrogation video priceless is that she thought she had gotten away with it. Had she been interrogated a week after the murder she would have been more in control. After so many years she was caught off guard because the idea of her going to jail had been eliminated and she thought she would live the rest of her life free as a bird.
Correct. 100% smug in her belief she was scot free, then BLINDSIDED. Caught totally off guard, flummoxed, she was a complete train wreck.
I love how the detectives got her to come in for questioning. That was carefully thought out. In the questioning, she looked very scared.
I loved it. Her so-called brilliant career was crap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Men like him think with one organ.😂
John "Rutting" more like it.
Bada bing...
The photos I've seen of her tell me that getting frisky with her wouldn't even cross my mind.
John was too busy getting his benefits.
he actually blames himself in his victim impact statement. It's like... weird. He's crying his eyes out, and it seems sincere, but like dude, you cheated on her. I can only see it working as trying to have both and then falling into stephanie's arms after sherri died, seeking comfort.
The interview was priceless. Her facial expressions we're epic
I've read a book and watched a lot of videos of Lazarus. You're overview is the shortest and most succinct of a convoluted situation I've seen. I'm not an expert, but I agree 100%. The retirement to allow her to hold onto her income by the PD shows how they still were trying to support her.
Perhaps they let her keep her retirement because she had an adopted child and a husband. Just guessing here.
She doesn't get out until she is 79 so I doubt she will get much benefit from her pension. Pure evil she is.
I didn't know about her until she came up on the JCS channel videos. Watching her entire initial interrogation video was disturbing...like, such a front being played out against reality.
@RavnDream he has changed the channel name a few times but currently it's JCS - Criminal Psychology.
Love JCS.
JIM CAN'T SWIM but t he makes badass documentaries
YESSSSS I heard about her through JCS too. My 2nd favorite video. My first one Russell Williams.
@RavnDream You really should check it out.
I prefer this style of video presentation from you Dr. G. It's more natural sounding.
There were a lot of offensive facets to this case. It was nice of John to have closure sex with the victim's stalker. It was sure nice of the police to believe John-the-player on his word. Ugh. What a bunch of trashy losers.
Thank you for your viewpoint and psycho analogy, Dr Grande. I do believe you could have a contingency plan if you ever want to be a detective.😊👍🌹
Isn’t it grand that John got “closure sex” before he was FORCED to cut ties with Stephanie? The only kind of closure sweet Sherri got was MURDER 😢
And he even slept with her after! I hope her murder haunts him.
Some men can't resist the "crazy in the head, crazy in the bed" women. It's like crack. Same goes for women. It's spell casting.
It was certainly a huge sacrifice and totally generous of John to give her closure sex. What a price!! 🤢🤮
@@DanielleS1001 Never heard that term before: good one!
She was hilariously obvious in her interrogation video. A true character that lady is....
Yep, she checked her pictures and it was like a million years ago.
If the family reads this I don’t choose to be insensitive to their feelings. They deeply loved their talented beautiful daughter. But, if you look at the statistics gang members murder nurses much more often than jealous cops. I mean ALOT more often. Check stats. I don’t think there is a single neighborhood in L.A. that isn’t gang controlled.
Listening to her talk in that was a headache.
@@qiuwbr091 you must not live in LA then. Gang related violence is the lowest it's been in 30 years.. please don't be scared of LA, and please don't continue thinking that about the city. Many people have done a lot of work to get it that way. Have a good evening.
@@qiuwbr091 It was Stephanie Lazarus's DNA on Sherri Rasmussen's bite mark wound, which was made as Sherri lay dying on the floor.
He knew.
cheating is one of the most devastating things one can do to another person, on the other hand glad she got caught
I respect your evaluation. LAPD’s Blue Wall is notorious and has a long history. After watching only about 10 minutes of Lazarus’ interview, my skin was crawling. I wonder how many homicides she was able to close with her personal experience. I’m glad she’s locked up.
This case is so fascinating. With articles in Vanity Fair, The Atlantic, and The LA Times, I've jumped down the rabbit hole today reading about this case all day. The husband seems passive-aggressive, self-centered man. How is it you help someone with closure by having one final romp?
Dude, her interrogation was unreal. Hard to watch. I’m glad she was caught. Too bad the detectives years ago didn’t follow all the leads so she could have been put away much sooner. She gives me the chills.
It is fascinating, not "hard to watch". Her demeanor is comical.
Bad cop protected ms crazy
"yeah, but that was like a million years ago!" - Stephanie Lazarus
😂😂😂😂
True Crime Loser does a hilarious analysis of this psychos interrogation. He has a lot of good videos but his Stephanie Lazarus videos are epic!
10.000 pictures. I have to look at the pictures.
She had absolutely no guilt about killing that woman.
Dr Grande should have this on a poster in his office -
"She used her own gun, which is not consistent with intelligence". 😆😆😂😂😂😂😭😭😭👏👏👏
I’m stealing that line! Lmao
Then she reported the gun missing some days after the murder.
@@audreymay9378 How blind can the police department be?? Wtf? She reports the gun missing, the woman she had been threatening was found dead, they literally had her dna evidence, and she still outsmarted them for over two decades?

O.M.G.!!! I will never forget watching that interview. It's the most bizarre & unsettling thing I had ever seen. Actually..I recall not being able to watch til the end. I had to check out early bc it was like watching someone lose their mind in real time. It was making me so nervous..I couldn't take it.

"she also used her gun, which is not consistent with intelligence" WOW IM DED 😂😂😂 dr grande, do u know ur so funny?
She’s one of those unfortunate people whose eyes are just that bit to close together .
Yes.....like a ferret.......
fetal alcohol syndrome does that
Too close together.
This is always a deal breaker for me. Always.
I don’t think her eyes look too close together. I do see where Stephanie did get a nose job. Look at the younger pictures of her original nose.
"That's not consistent with intelligence." The interrogation is fascinating, and a great starting point for those new to interrogation footage (her reactions are amusing).
“Gee!” I’ll never use that word again.
I know, like, erm, gee, uhm, it was a long time ago and erm, gee, I remember painting my toenails, uhm, gosh, lickeddy-splicked, gee, erm...
Lol yep
👍🤣😅🤣🤣😅🤣😅🤣😅🤣😅🤣😅🤣
If it was nowadays she’d be saying “literally” every other word instead of “like,” “um” or “gee.”
Around the 10:20 ish mark you say while she was being questioned by police she became exacerbated. That’s generally what happens to ‘a diseased state, say in a COPD exacerbation’. You probably meant to say, “she became exasperated”. It’s easy to confuse the two and I know you like to be precise in your presentation. Thank you for all your hard work in educating others.
Yes it is hard
Because it is hard
@Christopher Marlowe: "...repeal the 19th amendment..."
wtf, dude... no way that genie gonna get back in the bottle on that one.
Also, dial down the misogyny, k?
Stay safe & 🖖.
@Christopher Marlowe At which point did I defend Lazarous? I'm not. She should absolutely not be on the streets and you can see the mental illness in her eyes.
I'm not calling her husband a killer either nor am I blaming him for the decision that Lazarous ultimately made, but there's no denying this guy acted in poor judgement.
Repeal the 19th amendment? If it means I get to be a housewife and stay home okay lol as long as I'm taken care of I don't care if I'm technically property
if you think I'm some kind of hyperfeminist you're sorely mistaken
@@stevematson4808 Unfortunately, this is the most "penetrating" comment on the case....
I feel bad for Sherri. If only her husband had been more direct with Stephanie instead of constantly leading her on. Maybe Sherri would be alive.
A cop being a narc, no way, impossible!
The video of SL’s interrogation is easily the most entertaining thing I’ve ever found on UA-cam, bar none.

she was an “appearing good” citizen like Chris Watts.
She made sure she told the interrogators that she taught DARE in Oregon when she was a cop.
@@trailwindz7833 dare is an utter failure of a program. Ironic that.
@Jane Doe Dr. Grande should do Chris Coleman....another pos.
Her husband is also responsible for this murder by the way he behaved with Stephanie even though he was engaged. He is a callous cad!
She was so confident she had gotten away with this crime, that’s why she answered so many questions. If it wasn’t for the dna evidence from the bite mark, she wouldn’t have been convicted.
"... and that is not consistent with intelligence."
Ohh Dr. Grande I so love these 1 liners you slide in there on us!! I lost it when I heard the one I quoted above in this video, so perfectly delivered.
19:19 "They are not exempt, from this component, of the human condition." That is poetic.
Which is exactly what a lot of us advocating for reforming policing say. Police are human, and their departments and unions are made up of humans, therefore there will always be room for improvement.
Oops. At 12:35 you accidentally said Sherry instead of Stephanie. I'm sure you were just testing the attentiveness of your audience. 😉

Dr. Grande’s analysis is very impressive. He’s one of the few psychiatrists whom I’ve heard analyze someone whose analysis actually makes sense and is consistent with what many years on this earth has taught me about human nature.
I am absolutely intrigued with all the analyses that Dr. Grande provides. In fact, I have learned more about personality characteristics and disorders through this channel than anywhere else. Profilers and psychology students can learn a lot here!
What I've realized is that sometimes sociopaths have this crazy look in their eyes. I've witnessed this several times.
If someone's eyes look like this even for just a second...RUN.
This is a dead giveaway of a sociopath!
I call this bs.
Some sociopaths are masters of disguise which is how they get away with crimes for years just like Ted Bundy
