Well, they did kinda expose themselves to threats with how rapidly they de-militarized. For the Old Republic it worked (kinda), but that was because the Jedi were a strong order then and could serve as peacekeepers. Luke, as powerful as he is, is but one man.

I I didn't get into the new jedi order much, but read most of the novels (even splinter of the mind's eye! ) prior. Luke definitely distanced himself from governments because that was where the Republican era Jedi made their mistake. They believed they could help more people by working on the wider scale, but this led to their strange distanced approach to the Code to allow them to forget that people were a connected motive to expressing the light side. Anyway, if anybody's still tagging along, I'd dearly love to see the X-wing rogue Squadron series. The first seven books, they got a bit disjointed in the last couple. Then the corran horne exteded arc, then...

Unlike Leia, Luke did not seem comfortable with politics and having grown up in Tattoine, he may also not feel comfortable in a place like Coruscant. Mandalorian and Ahsoka also show just how much of the Imperials retained their position and power. As some people have pointed out, he may also sense that if the wrong people found out he was Anakin's son it would be worse for him, best to stay back from power. Also, it is not just Luke - he is the most feared because he is the most powerful, but people like Carson Teva, Hera and obviously Ahsoka are also looked upon with suspicion

If anyone in the new republic knew that Luke is the son of Darth Vader, then I could see why they would distrust him completely. After the way they've casted out Leia upon learning that she was Vader's daughter, the new republic would do everything in their power to disassociate themselves from Luke and his Jedi academy.

The Differences between legends and Canon is that in Legends Luke and Leia's Ancestry was Common Knowledge, All of Vader's Action were put on Palpatine controlling him. Once Luke freed his Father from Palpatine's control he turned on the Emperor killing them both. The Galaxy knew Anakin was a Hero of the Clone Wars so it was easy to convince people that this was what happened. Disney Canon chose to Hide Luke and Leia's Ancestry thereby causing huge Scandal when it was made public.

True but I think Luke gets a little more leeway, I mean he destroyed the first death star, and as far as the empire knows he came out of the same room as vader and the emperor plus he fought so many battles. Not that Leia didn't but Luke had more of a reputation as a war hero than Leia. Plus Luke stayed out of politics which is the main reason why that information destroyed Leias career

Legends-Continuity Luke had almost godlike force powers that made even his own order nervous. Powers he had no problem openly displaying whenever it was deemed necessary so some of what happened to him was arguably self-induced. If you haven't read Legends material, basically all the powers that Ezra Bridger, Ahsoka Tano, and Anakin's Force Ghost have thus far displayed were at one point or another used by Legends-Continuity Luke Skywalker

Its pretty pathetic that the Republic would basically just revert back to what it was, a bloated, corrupt and inept system that learned nothing from the past decades (Not that its totally their fault). Though I do wonder what prequel era jedi would think of Legends Luke's new jedi order. I like to think some of them would approve. I also think that if Dooku ever found redemption and somehow lived to see it, he'd probably be one of Luke's greatest supporters since Luke would be trying to do what Jedi should be doing instead of reducing themselves to political enforcers. Luke did the right thing remaking the Jedi Order like he did.

But in reality, it isn't like that at all. You should read _The Dictator's Handbook_ or check out CGP Gray's _The Rules for Rulers_ if you want to understand why the new guys almost always look an awful lot like the old guys. It also makes you think twice about replacing the government. Structures and patterns of power cannot always be ignored for "the greater good."

My guess is that the senators, especially the ones who did not fight in the GCW, are jealous and resentful towards the *military* heroes of the old Rebel Alliance. Just look at how much free time they seem to have to harass Hera, but not to investigate the Imperial conspiracy she helped uncover. These heroes are a problem for the politicians who want to be seen by the public as the ones building the NR. That's before you even factor in the ones who are secretly pro-Imperial and don't actually want the NR to remain strong enough to hold back the Remnant (or the hidden, at this point, First Order).

I don’t think Luke as a Jedi should care about prestige and glory. The Battle Of Endor went down in history as the battle where the Alliance fleet blew up the Death Star with the Emperor and Vader inside. Luke’s story there was a side detail, a detail he necessarily wasn’t willing to share with the public (considering the reputation damage a relation like that could cause his credibility or Leia’s political career). And even if he did come out and say ”oh yeah, I beat and killed both Vader and Palpatine” to hide the truth he would come across as pompous - very uncharacteristic of the now humble in-tune with the force jedi master Luke. It was a secret for him and his sister to share.
I don’t think Star Wars fans really think these things through; ”oh yeah, Luke was a hero to us. He should be the hero to the entire galaxy!” when it is just not true. Return of the Jedi underlines this with Vader’s burial and Luke’s sorrow being at a separate isolated location. And TLJ even tries to destruct this meta-myth of the ”great Luke Skywalker”.

If they actualy show this, it could explain why Luke just left in the end. It would make "the last Jedi" a way more logical movie, if he left because they forced him to, kinda send him away, telling him he would not be welcome. I would love to see Lukes story evolve maybe in the realm between realms, after his death. His thing is hope. I think he found it again in the end. Would love to see him more in shows and stuff. Maybe explain why he became so deppresed and hopeless and how he found his hope again.

One thing that star wars needs to stop doing is killing all the Jedi and than realising oh we need more Jedi. I understand the original situation was star wars was only planned to be 3 movies so they just didn't have more Jedi. So they kinda had to create order 66. But why have Kylo Ren kill all the padawans and than Luke just leave behind everything. 1000s of years of Jedi history gone because a not even fully trained kid somehow killed everyone. Leaving behind any dislike of the depressed Luke character what future stories is their to tell. They pretty much killed everyone except Ray. They would either have to go far back or forward in time or a different galaxy. Their is nothing interesting left, which sucks because the end of episode 6 had so many possibilities. I think the biggest tragedy with the sequels is not that they were bad movies but that they destroyed the ability to tell interesting stories going into the future. Regardless of the movie being good or bad with a series with so much scope as star wars you always have to be aware of how your story will affect future stories. Maybe they can have Jedi trained by Ahsoka in another galaxy come back but at that point just make stories in the new galaxy instead.

@nezarecdiscipleofthewitnes3823 messing up a sequel has far more impact on a story than messing up a prequel. A sequel can ruin future storytelling. A prequel can be bad but it tends to just be forgotten or disregarded it if it isn't liked. The sequels locked in a lot of things which inhibit future story telling. Them also having all the jedi be dead and a myth doesn't help. You have to do so much to just make a jedi character exist. Than it's about where they were with the first order so many things cause issues for storytelling. I think just go to a new galaxy and give up on the previous one. Unless you want to make a prequel that's 1000s of years in the past or future.

Depends on the context amd which version.
In legends they blamed the jedi directly for the emperor because they didnt know the difference between the sith and the jedi. And jealousy was a thing. Further the new republic consider them their own government body that remained an outside threat.
In canon they also blamed the jedi for the Empire. They believed false pretense set forth by palpatine and later the fact that Luke as a member of the rebellion when it came to light hos father was vader was a slap in the face. They also resented that Luke actively sought to not follow the path of the Jedi prior to him where they became essentially a branch of the government- the jedi were jedi only- this however had drawback as it would prevent jedi from performing their duty as jedi- so jedi became nothing more really than monks preserving jedi teaching and nothing more, eventually being a redundant existence.

I know I’ve said you should always be scared of people that say “”for the greater good”” and bloody terrified of the ones that truly mean it but that’s all S31 was doing , removing any threats to the federation internal or external, and looking at the new republic it could really do with its own section 31 as it needs all the help it can get.

Check out the old EU, otherwise known as "Legends" nowadays. The majority of those books were approved to be published by George. Of course, he mostly just read the blurbs, and probably checked out a chapter or two, maybe three... But they still had to have his approval.
Overall, Luke had ridiculous levels of Force Power, and it was both a relief, and utterly terrifying, to the New Republic. Mostly because they feared he might turn against them, and they resented the fact that they had little recourse on how to deal with him. He would help them, but it often, to the leaders, felt like he'd do so on a whim. They didn't understand that he wanted to keep The Jedi Order and The New Republic as separate entities. This comes from the idea of Church & State being separate, considering the Jedi Order is akin to a religion.

@@MrJinglejanglejingle I know that George Lucas' plan was for Chief-Of-State Mon Mothma to have to strike a delicate truce with some of the crime syndicates of The Outer Rim, so as to keep the beginnings of The New Republic viable. Leia was also supposed to be a Senator and a Force-user, while a Wife and Mother to her children with Han Solo. Apparently, for Lucas, Luke would never marry or have children, since his main focus was on creating a New Jedi Order. It seems, Favreau and Filoni are following some of George's concepts and world-building for The SWU after ROTJ; hence, The Remnant Empire, The Pirate Nation, Boba Fett's gotra, and the growing criminal organizations within the galaxy (which will be centerstage in the video game, SW: Outlaws). I'm just wondering if Lucas' intention was for The Jedi to NOT be directly connected to The New Republic's government body, in contrast to The Galactic Republic of 1000 years? Now, the whole pocket universe of The Mandalorian Saga is going to add even more to this drama and intrigue, now that The Pathway To Peridea/The New Beyond is about to shake The SWU like never before...

It’s so disappointing knowing that whatever Luke builds in the Disney cannon is doomed to die in order for the Sequel Trilogy to happen. It’s kinda like watching The Clone Wars knowing Anakin, the Jedi, the Republic, the clones, Dooku, the Separatists, and basically everyone except Palpatine would lose in the end, but at least in that case, we knew the heroes and stories that would rise once the fall happened so you could feel slightly better about it. I don’t have that same sentiment with the Sequels.

Honestly it's a good thing in both canon and legends that Luke distanced himself away from galactic politics, now while the Imperial remnants being petty sound bad and is most assuredly a bad thing, Luke is also aware that the biggest fault the Clone Wars era Jedi faced were the fact they became too politically involved in the galaxy and was forced to fight in the Clone Wars, not volunteered to as his new Jedi academy did in the Vong war.

The conflict between Jedi and Sith have caused destruction and death for eons for everyone not Force users. It's a sick twisted cycle. I think Baylon knows this and isn't a Sith because he doesn't want this cycle to continue, but knows that Jedi take a "police officer" approach to keeping the peace and Baylon wants to slice the darker middle ground and stamp out resistance to what he feels is a better bath Thrawn might bring.

I think we should also remember that mon mothma was also skeptical of the jedi. She was the only one in the old republic delegation who didn't have a personal relationship with the jedi. In rogue one she asks bail organa if it is right to seek out ben kenobi. I think if bail organa was still alive and became the new republic chancellor, doubt about the jedi would've been better mitigated.

Its worth remembering that the Old Republic, Empire, and New Republic were run by 99% the same people. The Empire only lasted like, 23 years. And the Senate wasn't fully dissolved until A New Hope. That basically means that if, say, US Senator Mitch McConnell for instance were elected to the Galactic Senate the same year it was reorganized into the Empire, he likely would still hold his same seat when the New Republic was formed. With just a brief gap in his career during the events of the Original Trilogy. And that's not even to get into local politics.
So of course the New Republic was corrupt and unstable. The Old Republic was corrupt and unstable, the Empire was corrupt and unstable, and all three of those governments were run by all the same people, give or take Sheev Palpatine.

The dustruction of the Death Star would swayed their beliefs one way or the other. some of those serving absolutely continued their service into the New Republic change over, secretly hating Luke in particular

The Jedi Order were instrumental in allowing Darh Sidious’ rise to ultimate power. And his right-hand man was Anakin Skywalker, the venerated “Chosen One”, supposedly encapsulating the best of what a Jedi was meant to be. And look at how that all played out.
Honestly, how can we fault the New Republic for not trusting Luke? The son Darth Vader and now the most powerful Jedi alive. Hero of the war or not, no one in their right mind would or should trust him farther than they can throw him.
We have the benefit and luxury of knowing Luke’s true self. We know he’s pure of heart and mind. But the people of that galaxy don’t. They’ve seen this exact same song and dance before. I think it’s good story writing to make this rift between them. It makes sense. Given the history at play, they’d be reckless beyond reason to trust him at all. Ever.

I think Luke wants to stay away from politics as this was a large part as to why Yoda's Jedi Order fell.
Also, as there is little knowledge of the Force and Jedi Order, Luke wants to focus on what he can find and re-create the Jedi Order.
He wants to serve the Force, not be a servant of the New Republic. Servant or slave!
Still, things are going to change now that Ezra has returned as he was at the start of the Alliance. He will likely help the New Republic, and many know Ezra vanished with Thrawn and Ezra's return could be all the proof Hera needs to flush out disloyalty or to unite the New Republic.
At the same time if Ezra fights with the New Republic they could use it to make Luke join the fight against Thrawn or banish him if he refuses!
