This was their one time on Saturday night live. Two great numbers & the audience, rightfully so, ate it up. I felt like I went to R&R heaven when I saw them in Dec of 2002 when they were on their "reunited" tour. I had goosebumbs for 2 hrs as well as jr was at attention the whole time.Greatest live ("bar") band ever. Wowser!
For those wondering. This was performed on Live TV - February 5, 1982 on ABC's weekly late night comedy series "Fridays" - which was similar to SNL. Fridays had a number of great bands perform live that did not appear on SNL - 1980-2.
I met Dave and Phil Alvin in 1965 at Wenzel's Music Town Record Store in Downey, California, the home of Downey Records. We went out back and walked and talked a while and Dave had his guitar with him and we came to some freight train railroad tracks where we sat down at a brick building dock and we all sang "Shake, Rattle and Roll". It was awesome! I was a senior at Artesia High School at that time and they were students at Downey High School.
1981! Wow! What a voice Phil has. Greatest brother combo ever? Louvins, Everlys, Alvins? Dave gets votes for songwriting and for still kicking ass 30 years later!
I saw The Blasters live in Seattle back in the late 80's in a small venue. They were fantastic! I've had the album Non Fiction since then. I just picked up the CD on Amazon.com. Sounds great, brings back some memories.
great band!!! I saw them live many times in the 80's and 90's in Italy they saved my life in those years there was lotsa shit around: Duran Duran, Toto, Depeche mode...
Back in '92 in Vancouver I spotted Dave Alvin in a McDonald's on Granville St. He was shocked that someone knew who he was. He put me and my buddy on the best list for where he was playing that night. The Town Pump.
Artists who consistently lived up to the extremely high standards of the founders of rock and roll were increasingly difficult to find by the early 1980s. However, the Blasters did so with remarkable regularity and indeed are one of a tiny number of bands or solo artists whose output is worthy to be placed in the same league as their inspirations. Little Willie John was just about as good as it got. But then again, so are the Blasters.
In my most exalted opinion "the Blasters can still rock" I will be at the performance tonight. I've seen all versions of the band except when John Bazz (bass) was the drummer... long time ago...Tonight @ The Maui Sugar Mill (Tarzana,ca.) it's Phil ,John ,Bateman n Waytt...Dave may show...after the opening Blaster set...it's a jam ...heh heh heh... Thank you Zak for hosting this great American band...and congrats' on the 5 year anniversary of your "Blue Mondays"............... I plan on rockin
Man. Jack White's version came on Pandora a bit ago. It had been years since I heard this song. Just listened to a few different versions including the original. This was the version I remember from my youth. What a great song.
anyone remember "streets of fire"? classic 80's movie starring Mike Pare, Diane Lane, and William Dafoe. Anyway, the Blaster make a cameo and sing "One Bad Stud". Awesome song, for an awesome movie in an awesome decade!
I'm sure the Blasters would be the first to tell you that Little Willie John is the shit but have some respect. I've seen the Blasters a couple dozen times dating back to the early 80's and they always kick ass. Going to see them again on Sunday.
David Blumenkrantz The Blasters, Los Lobos, The Bus Boys, Naughty Sweeties(thought they would be huge!), lots of others. Great time for Live Music in LA!
i was lucky to saw them 92 in san francisco: the were unbelieveable intense! they sweted like pigs and they certainly rocked the house down. still have the flyer framed. cheers from overseas!
Heard this on the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 3 and it caught my attention. I kept hearing it play in my head and needed to hear it some more! On the PRIME show it's referred to as I'm Shakin' by the Button Club
I've been a fan of theirs from the early 80s, however I've never seen them live. But I'm going to see them tonight, even though it's raining in Phoenix.
Great Song and glad that you will be appearing in VEGAS. I drove by your Downey house yesterday and saw the front door open, but was not sure if you still live there. Keep up the good work.
Footcar: You are entirely correct, sir. I saw and totally enjoyed the Blasters with the following on guitar: Hollywood Fats (dancing fat man!), Greg "Smokey" Hormel, James Intveld (who was amazing! Not that the other guys were any slouches), Keith Wyatt, and finally Dave Alvin in a reunion show. Oh, I loved that band.
anyone ever seen the christmas special with the heat and cold misers, their little helpers sing a song with the same beat..."He's mister heat miser, hes mister 101"..."He's mister cold miser, he's mister ten below"
Its not a contest, just a cool song to play and the Blasters were a fun band to go see and dance to with your friends. Besides i doubt you were even alive to see Willie John perform this song.
I am fairly sure that is a ES-325. It has no stop tail piece, the neck is not bound, and the pickups look like mini humbuckers. You use to be able to get those for a song until Caleb from Kings of Leon started playin one exactly like the one Phil is playin
By the way, in a different interview he said that somebody left a mix tape at his house with the original version of this song on it, and thats where he got it from. And Laura, in my opinion Jack White is the greatest to listen to. Every morning I listen to Blunderbuss while I walk to my bus stop, sit there, through my entire bus route, and before school while I get to my locker and stuff. I dunno, maybe it's just because I've been listening to him since I was born.
Absolutely too fucking beautiful for words! To this day I will never understand why these guys and X hardly ever to the point of never got played on the radio back in the day. Then again, the average American commercial radio listener back then and even now still wouldn't know the difference between hot steaming dog shit and a plate full of chicken fried steak with gravy, mashed taters, green beans and cornbread without a blindfold anywhere in sight, folks, so there ya go...
Sad but true. Nothing worse than commercial, terrestrial radio. With so much amazing music out there... literally a near infinite amount of music out there from all genres, songs ranging from “absolutely mind-blowing” to “very decent” to at least “really interesting,” why these radio station conglomerates choose to only play the same 100 songs in regular rotation is beyond me. I mean, does any rock fan over the age of 25 really need to hear Sweet Home Alabama again? Or Smoke On The Water or Alright Now or Walk This Way or Another One Bites The Dust? Or Under the Bridge or Comfortably Numb, or Smells Like Teen Spirit, etc? And Sadly I've loved all these tunes at various times while growing up but today I can honestly say that if I never heard any of those songs again I'd be just fine. I’m focusing on Classic Rock music cause that’s what I grew up with, (60's & 70's rock got me into music... I started with The Doors, Beatles, Dylan, Sabbath, Hendrix, CCR, The Dead, Zeppelin, Neil Young etc.) and those stations seem like the worst culprits. The funny thing is that some of the above bands/artists, who are among the biggest and most well-known don’t get played much anymore outside of maybe their one obligatory tune...Like Neil Young has literally hundreds of great songs.... but if I hear anything by him at all it's Rockin' in the free world or Heart Of Gold... same with Bob Dylan… If anything I hear anything, it's Like a Rolling Stone, the Dead... Uncle John's Band or Touch of Grey... I could go on and on (obviously! Lol) The truth is the average person doesn’t really care about music or Hell, the average person doesn't even like music... maybe they sorta liked a band or two back in High School because a girl or a guy they dated or crushed on, was a fan of those bands.... so the only way the corporate, non-music loving, nomusically knowledgeable program director can keep the average joe to stay turned into a station to hear 25 minutes of commercials every hour is if they hear songs they grew up with, have heard 50,000 times and know every note and syllable of. Imagine forcing Joe-Schmo to listen to a song they’ve never heard before?! Parish the thought! When can I hear Marquee Moon or Some Weird Sin on the radio? Or I will Dare or how about some Joy Division, The Stooges, Johnny Thunders, or Can, or PiL or some Prog like Caravan or Soft Machine or maybe some Fairport Convention or Capt Beefheart? And why can’t I turn on the radio and hear some electric Miles or Pharoah Sanders or Sun Ra.... or hell, Sun City Girls? Why not?! Sigh... ok rant over.
Absolutely agreed. My mother told me to get over it but it just irks when there is real music out there and my daughter is listening to auto tune crap.
Listen to Marc Maron's interview with Jack White. He hadn't heard or heard of the Blaster's version until months after the record had been released. His was a cover of Little Willie John's version.
Ukrainian Cultural Center on Melrose 1980 - with Steve Berlin and the Plugz as openers. That was a great show! I know how very lucky I was to be there in those days. JW was 15 then, but he would have liked it too, I bet.
The Alvins are a National Treasure.
Don’t forget about the Simon’s and Theodore’s
Damn God Bless the Blasters
Thanks for providing their AWESOMENESS.
This was always a lot of fun!!!There used to be a funny dance we used to do to this song!!
Wowser!
The Blasters are American Music and Rock and Roll. I saw them live about 5 times the last time being on their 50 anniversary tour.
Oh....the memories this video brings back.
That's the Great Lee Allen playing sax between Steve Berlin and Dave Alvin. Wonderful to see this.
For those wondering. This was performed on Live TV - February 5, 1982 on ABC's weekly late night comedy series "Fridays" - which was similar to SNL. Fridays had a number of great bands perform live that did not appear on SNL - 1980-2.
Holy shit, that is some cool shit

1981! Wow! What a voice Phil has.
Greatest brother combo ever? Louvins, Everlys, Alvins?
Dave gets votes for songwriting and for still kicking ass 30 years later!
This is from Fridays. I remember watching this. Wow, it's been a while.
I saw The Blasters live in Seattle back in the late 80's in a small venue. They were fantastic! I've had the album Non Fiction since then. I just picked up the CD on Amazon.com. Sounds great, brings back some memories.

If you know the Blasters, you know your shit!!!!!
Back in '92 in Vancouver I spotted Dave Alvin in a McDonald's on Granville St. He was shocked that someone knew who he was. He put me and my buddy on the best list for where he was playing that night. The Town Pump.
The Blasters got me noivous like Lil Willie John. ;)
Artists who consistently lived up to the extremely high standards of the founders of rock and roll were increasingly difficult to find by the early 1980s. They played a couple of weeks ago here. I agree. Really rockin' show. But see them while you can... Phil Alvin sounded great but looked pretty frail.
Fuck that was good.
Saw them in Chicago 80 or 81. Taped for PBS special. Did I'm Shakin' 3 times. Awesome.
Cooolll!!!
Blasthers loved forever
Steve Berlin (pre Los Lobos) on bari sax.
saw these guys in Atlanta just last night. They still sound every bit as great.
I'm sure the Blasters would be the first to tell you that Little Willie John is the shit but have some respect. I've seen the Blasters a couple dozen times dating back to the early 80's and they always kick ass. Going to see them again on Sunday.
Man could Phil Alvin belt it out. Loved this band.

The Blasters were an incredibly tight band.....great years for concerts all over the city.. The Blasters, X, Los Lobos..... are you kidding me?!
You got that right. You must be from LA.

David Blumenkrantz The Blasters, Los Lobos, The Bus Boys, Naughty Sweeties(thought they would be huge!), lots of others. Great time for Live Music in LA!
Hell yes. I love seeing all the current comments, too. The Blasters are it.
RIP Ryan Dunn
I see Ehren McGhehey shaking trying to pin the tail on the donkey when I hear this song.
Superb !!!
I saw dave edmonds perform this song in the late '90's at a bar in frisco. The show was billed only as "Dave Edmonds". VG performance.
That little willie john song
"Sitting in the back seat listening to little willie john. That's when time stood still"
Hard. Tight. Magnificent. Only negative:unknown.
This is AAA American Music Ccclassic

Fantastic
Simple and tight
i was lucky to saw them 92 in san francisco: the were unbelieveable intense! they sweted like pigs and they certainly rocked the house down. still have the flyer framed. cheers from overseas!
Lol ! I was just thinking of that Mr. Heatmeiser song ( he's TOO MUCH ! )
Music & shows were unbelievable during that time!
Heard this on the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 3 and it caught my attention. I kept hearing it play in my head and needed to hear it some more! On the PRIME show it's referred to as I'm Shakin' by the Button Club
real good stuff.
Downey music home boys and home girls. These boys probably cruised Harvey's Broiler back in the day!
And Tweedy Blvd
I've been a fan of theirs from the early 80s, however I've never seen them live. But I'm going to see them tonight, even though it's raining in Phoenix.

He tried lol. Little Willie John for the win 💕💐💐
Its not a contest, just a cool song to play and the Blasters were a fun band to go see and dance to with your friends. Besides i doubt you were even alive to see Willie John perform this song.
I could retire off of what that es-335 dot neck Phil is playing is worth.
That man has some serious guitars.
I am fairly sure that is a ES-325. It has no stop tail piece, the neck is not bound, and the pickups look like mini humbuckers. You use to be able to get those for a song until Caleb from Kings of Leon started playin one exactly like the one Phil is playin

0:41 haha great song
Steve Berlin on sax?
yep, with Lee Allen
Absolutely - he and Lee: They Got The Power
The Blasters did it as a cover of Little Willie John's original from 1960
