Having had the privilege of singing these much loved top C's as a chorister in St. Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin, how sad it that we focus on merely one side of the beauty of this piece, whilst totally missing the entire point of the composition and indeed the composer's intent; to convey repentance, regarding our ignoring of God and seeking profound reconciliation with our creator, which comes through Jesus. That is the whole point of the piece and fundamentally why it is so profound and evocatively relevant to us today. Sadly I fear we miss the original intent of the composer, worshipping musicianship and music and missing the whole point. The truth of Psalm 51 is actually what fundamentally makes this piece a most beautiful and powerfully relevant piece of today.
There are many videos expressing and detailing the point of "The Allegri" and Psalm 51. Isn't there room for information on the musicianship and the evolution of the music? And whether it's "worshiping" the music or not (your assertion being debatable at best, as many would simply call it research) it's neither my - nor your - place to dictate how and what people worship or do. While your background of singing this piece and hitting the high C's is enviable, I'm not sure your opinions warrant the same type of respect or that your background confirms any inflated relevance on this topic. I for one am grateful for this insight and research into the music.
I absolutely agree! The celestial music itself makes you repent! And the words make you completely defenceless!
The answer to the question what is the difference between making music for a label and money. and making music for a higher purpose the answer is in this beautiful arrangement.
awwww it was in interview!... too bad, I wanted to hear the music, not the man talking in between!.
Hector Burnside There are plenty other instances of this wonderful piece on UA-cam. I thought this interview, being unique on UA-cam, was very valuable.
This choir does sing this very piece on UA-cam & I’ve heard them all.... theirs is the best!!!! By far, hands down, no comparison!!!
Absolutelty agreee .The words work before this WONDERFULL music.
I have had the wonderful experience of hearing The Sixteen perform this in Winchester Cathedral. A truly beautiful piece, sung perfectly.
The new addition at around 4:00 is so beautiful
4:10 what ensemble is singing it? and/or link to video?
It is confession set to music. I am awed every time I hear it
This eighteen century Sistine chapel masterpiece is breathtaking beautifully performed.
Stupendo.. Bravissimi.
AH !!! SO VERY BEAUTIFUL INDEED !!! THANKS FOR THE POST !! FROM U.K.
❤️ beautiful
I've never seen/heard this suing by women before and it's wonderful.
Because it was never intended to be.
Amazing performance of an inspiring masterpiece
Really interesting bit of music history. Thank you. The distant quartet seems to be the idea incorporated by Tenebrae's 2018 version.
The Idea of the distant quartet has been put to performance by the Choir of Claire College, Cambridge around eight years ago:

Magnificent🎵
I got very nervous listening to the new version but I will try to give it another listen.
PLEASE I REALLY NEED THE EMAIL OF THIS GREAT CHOIR OR POSSIBLY MAESTRO HARRY CHRISTOPHERS. I LOVE THIS GROUP
I'm sure they have a website, being a renowned professional choir, but I don't see Mr. Christophers' email being published anywhere...
Sounds like a B natural is being sung on the top instead of the high Cs at 04:12 on the recording, so possibly been transposed. Certainly a much improved piece but, as ever, the Sixteen brings anything to life!!! Well done!
More likely historical tuning
top!
Truly fantastic and heavenly . Not of this Earth
Does anybody know the name of the soprano in the distance choir? Such a heavenly voice! I´d very like to hear more of her.
Try original recordings of Karl Jenkins Adiemus album Cantus she has the top "C" and really takes piecr of music ro new levels
Grace Davidson I think. The best living soprano.
It is confession set to music.
Very much so... which is why in the Catholic Church at least the Miserere (psalm 50) is considered one of the "Seven Penitential Psalms" that are said together at certain times.
Ben is like the Einstein of music.
salah satu choir terbaik dunia
greetings from Indonesia
changing the notes lmao! hilarious.
You do not understand what you hear is what the conductor composer wanted you to hear!. This group have total control of their voices - foe me what seena a mistake to you is in fact my highlights!
Ah Europe! Of for the return of the top C of your culture!
This piece is right up there with the Tallis "Spem in Alium." And they sang it with 14, not 16.
You forgot that the conductor and cameraman were singing
interesting how even here, a well-established, highly acclaimed professional choir manages to drop pitch
unwordly and beyond words annie
Allegi
4:10 what ensemble is singing it? and/or link to video?
Wait- where do we find these versions?
Not of this World!
I want to hear the music, without the interview......
Buy the CD.
Ridiculous! The supposed reasons for destroying this piece have no basis in historical record, but are entirely fabricated by a pompous musician seeking notoriety. Sickening and disgusting really.
R. v. R I agree with Dominic. Harry Christophers and the Sixteen have been singing this piece for many years. I myself attended a live performance of it some years ago at Chester Cathedral. Your highly critical and totally 'over the top' comment is wholly unjustified. The final sentence in your comment is a totally appropriate way of describing your comment. You should be ashamed of your self.
