This is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard; and I love all forms. However, somehow the way the voices compliment the Latin conveys not only sorrow, but forgiveness; loss and hope; emptiness and fullness all equally and at the same time. Great for any season, Faith, or philosophy.

Actually, I think this music was meant to entertain, instead. It was written in XVII century, back then you had to compose sacred music (or at least to write both nonreligious and religious music) if you wanted to grow your musical skill, it was the use. This is the way in that age the entertainment was intended. However, this is still music, born from human genius or divine genius, as you prefer, but still you can appreciate its religious value, or its artistic value, or even both.
This soprano is absolutely angelic...but there is something in a boy soprano's voice singing those high notes that is irreplaceable. It is so pure and light, and it cannot be found in a grown woman's voice. Again, this lady is killing it, I just prefer the Kings College version.

@BarondHolbach and @FOreseer, to add to a debate that seems to have been raging for a while, manuscript evidence shows that, actually, Allegri didn't write quite a lot of the 'Miserere' as we think of it today. Those famous top C's were most probably added by an 18th-century performing edition, as were quite a lot of its other characteristic features. Therefore, seeing this piece as a celebration of one man's genius, god-given or not, seems a little strange, does it not?
Yes, I agree that atheists are generally more open-minded- that was sort of the point. Not all though, plenty of people who would avoid 'church music' on some sort of predisposed offensiveness. As you mentioned, religion has a lot of brilliant art, architecture and music affiliated with it. My position, which I'm sure you share, is that the art-form stands on its own, created by man.
And what is the music about? Every single note is written to exhalt God, if you take away the religious context, there won't even be a single note left, the structure would fall and all there is left would be silence. He didn't actually do it with helium, it's a joke. If we assume helium made you be able to hit high notes better, nobody would still be able to control the long note like that. The helium wears off and would be impossible to keep it at the same note. It would be decreasing in pitch actually. But helium does not actually increase your vocal range whatsoever. He's completely capable of hitting that note without it, they even had some sort of documentary where they spoke about how hard it was to increase the vocal range that far high. And they perform live and he now always hits that note with no problems.

Miserere (full title: Miserere mei, Deus, Latin for "Have mercy on me, O God") is a setting of Psalm 51 (50) by Italian composer Gregorio Allegri. It was composed during the reign of Pope Urban VIII, probably during the 1630s, for use in the Sistine Chapel during matins, as part of the exclusive Tenebrae service on Holy Wednesday and Good Friday of Holy Week.

Popular legend has it that Pope Urban VIII held this piece in such high regard that the 1514 piece of music was never to leave St. Peter's, upon excommunication, except for three copies that were given to different ecumenical safekeeping. Upon hearing it once, 14 year old W.A. Then I would say your brother makes very mise and thoroughly investigated recommendations. This is my go to alone chilling and smoking song cause it gets me right with the world around me again.
I can't understand why some people in the world refuse to appreciate or listen to something beautiful like this just because they don't believe in it. I may be Agnostic (not the same thing as Atheism by the way), but I appreciate good music regardless of what it's about. This song is gorgeous and I enjoy Gregorian Chant in general. I could listen to it all day.
Those "some" people make links where links are not required, that is the problem. I AM an atheist, and base my life on learning and evidence BUT I appreciate music...almost all music (country music just doesn't do it for me) but everything from Rock to Heavy Metal to this and Celtic/New Age...music is one of humanities crowning achievements and should be celebrated...the survival of our ancestors is what made this possible.
CupcakeStrider I agree! I'm also an agnostic, but I this kind of music has always fascinated me. I listen to this song when I want to relax and meditate, but I always appreciate Gregorian Chant no matter the situation. Also, a lot of soundtracks from video games, movies and anime series use this kind of music, so it's not like people need to be religious to listen to this.

Cor mundum crea in me, Deus: et spiritum rectum innova in visceribus meis. Ne proiicias me a facie tua: et spiritum sanctum tuum ne auferas a me. Redde mihi laetitiam salutaris tui: et spiritu principali confirma me. Docebo iniquos vias tuas: et impii ad te convertentur. Because the world wasn't ready for it.
When i die this is the music i want to hear
Really nigga
But you..... ... never mind🖕
Rusty_Cylon or banjovi dead or alive?
It's a wee bit melancholy, but I hear you.
You need to do a perfect act of contrition along with the sentiment this piece produces in you. Golden key to Heaven. God bless you. Not easy
I'm an atheist and this brought me to tears, absolutely beautiful
+slytherin0queen Agreed, I too am an atheist but that doesn't mean we can't admire the beauty of religious art, music, and poetry.
+slytherin0queen I'm Jared and this brought me to children, absolutely pedoful.
+slytherin0queen Meh. I prefer Gorgoroth.
+sp00ky alein You can't even spell! Jared the moron.
+Het ismij whoosh! Beautiful music though. :'-) I always come back to this one.
c 'est la voix des anges
J'ai l'impression d'être à côté de Jésus quand je vous écoute. Toucher le ciel. Vous chantez comme des anges ! Merci !
The must be one of the top 5 most beautiful pieces of music in the world !

@@schallyrowle1978 your choice ! :-)
my brother recommends listening to this with headphones after rolling a joint
Then I would say your brother makes very mise and thoroughly investigated recommendations. This is my go to alone chilling and smoking song cause it gets me right with the world around me again.
+dennis themenace .. NO.
I don't think God would be supportive of that decision and lifestyle
LMFAO.!!!! Pompous imbecile.
@@theelegantassassin1174 Jesus would have used weed you moron. Deprogram your self and learn some history.
Exactly, It's the same thing with good rock or r&b, you might like the song, but not the meaning of the lyrics.
CupcakeStrider As Jesus said, "You are not far from the Kingdom of Heaven.
CupcakeStrider I'm an atheist and I find this kind of music to be absolutely stunning and beautiful.
Lyrics: Miserere mei, Deus
Miserere mei, Deus: secundum magnam misericordiam tuam.
Et secundum multitudinem miserationum tuarum, dele iniquitatem meam.
Amplius lava me ab iniquitate mea: et a peccato meo munda me.
Asperges me hysopo, et mundabor: lavabis me, et super nivem dealbabor.
Auditui meo dabis gaudium et laetitiam: et exsultabunt ossa humiliata.
Averte faciem tuam a peccatis meis: et omnes iniquitates meas dele.
Cor mundum crea in me, Deus: et spiritum rectum innova in visceribus meis.
Ne proiicias me a facie tua: et spiritum sanctum tuum ne auferas a me.
Redde mihi laetitiam salutaris tui: et spiritu principali confirma me.

Latin can be beautiful sometimes.
Without being religious this is an urgent awesomeness in perfection
Struggling with my physical and mental health at the moment this is beautiful
No matter what you believe, you ARE loved... Sincerely, Some random stranger on the internet
I hope you are getting better and stronger.
I hope you are well❤
I am too. Hope you have found peace.
1:17 Holy shit the lady has an amazingly bright sounding voice
If it is this beautiful here, imagine how it will be in Heaven
Better enjoy it now, just in case...
Tears me up all every time I hear it.
I've never in my life heard anything more heavenly. This composition is so haunting and unspeakably beautiful, it's almost cruel.
