A trip round my Mum’s Cumbria garden which she carved with her own fair hands out of a field

- My mum is 81 years old and still gardens every day in this just less than an acre garden which she carved herself by hand out of a limestone rocky fellside field in Cumbria. Helped by her friend Carol only once a week Mum keeps herself extremely fit while exercising her quilting artist’s plantwoman’s eye here on a daily basis. There’s always so much to do, with checking for hedgehogs and moving wild orchids onto the sphagnum moss roof of the potting shed just two of the many chores she loves because look what they make! She paid me to weed by the yard when I was a child - strong influence!

I’m a new mom i tried to fill up my garden with many flowers it's never get beautiful like your mom garden
keep trying - slowly slowly you'll get better at it and the garden will fill with flowers - it's hard work with little children but you can do it x

Lovely .she is inspirational. My mam was a keen gardener ..but at 84 dementia has got her and that knowledge has gone ....she is like a wilting flower no comfrey will bring her back ...So im a gardener too ..i dont like formal garden,love a rambeling hedge ,very thing fighting to survive and not a weed in sight .thank u for shareing

It's a good job Viper's bugloss is good for pollinators because it has evil stingers - I had to put my gardening gloves in the washing machine 3 times to get rid of the ruddy things! 😜

What a wonderful woman and a wonderful garden! I enjoyed this tour of the garden with you and your mum so much.
My own mum and grandmother were my gardening inspirations too. Mum passed away earlier this year at the age of 83. Even after 11 heart attacks, 3 strokes and numerous other health problems, she continued working in her own small garden with absolutely no help. Her garden was her pride and joy and very much her “Happy Place”. It was only a badly broken ankle, that refused to heal, that finally prevented her from gardening or even getting out into her garden during the last 7 months of her life. Miss her so much! Savour every moment you have with your amazing mum in this fabulous “Happy Place”.

I'm a little behind, obviously, as this video is 12 months old. Really enjoy your mother's garden it's delightful. I was curious where abouts it was in the county, and then you mention "popping" to Tom and Abby's so I suspect you're not too far from there. That gives me a reasonable idea, as I'm in Cumbria too it's nice to see a mature garden which can go e meca clue as to what will do well in my own, especially as I'm very much a novice. However, if you are close to Tom and Abby you're in southern climes compared to us stop the M6 lol

Your mother’s greenhouse is gorgeous! Her garden is fabulous! What was the large stand of flowers you first spoke about outside the greenhouse? I’m growing comfrey for the fertilizer also. Her compost bins are huge and amazing. Everything is so green and beautiful. I would have never guessed her age. Gardening has definitely kept her young and fit. What is the pink that’s not meadowsweet? Loved your visit. Thanks
The first plant you ask about is a campanula though which I’m not sure and the pink froth not meadowsweet is Filipendula bravenusta x
