- My mother Googie is 83 and three quarters years old and still gardening three quarters of an acre of Cumbrian fell side out of which she has carved a long, triangular garden and into which she has planted a great many trees. When she came here thirty years ago there was nothing but rough boundary hedges. Whenever I visit her we try and find time for a wander round the garden, a few top tips from her, and a visit to the hedgehog family which lives in a little house under an old wheelbarrow. Enjoy!

I had the joy of bumping into Googie a couple of months ago. I always enjoy these garden tours. We had that frost in October too, which really set the leaves into full autumn mode, as well as finished off the courgettes. What a joy to have such a stunning morning!

Your Mum is amazing. Its your Mums brisk lucidity that is impressive to me,even more so than your Mums physical fitness. As a not quite 70 year old who sometimes has to phone a friend to check what day of the week it is,a clear brain in older age is a boon. You have inherited those great genetics. I love that non slip pathing,that could be used inside as well if needed.I couldnt cope with a garden that size,its good that your Mum is not such a "purist" as to not get help in when needed. Ive started a new garden,its smaller than my previous ones but as my physical ability is less thats ok. I thought those crab apple fruits were meant to be small like that.
Oh yes,quick edit. Your Mum is the same age as Cliff Richard whose book I am currently reading. I was 5 years old when Summer Holiday came out so in our house it was my big sister who was the Cliff Richard fan. It was only about 20 years ago that I cottoned on to how good he is,music performing wise, another person who exemplifies good genes plus exercise and activity.

The middle sized Garden UA-cam channel did a piece on How to create a garden that looks gorgeous and supports wildlife at Great Dixter. They listened in to a habitat pile and it made an astonishing sound. Well worth a listen.

What a lovely treat 🍁🍂 I love seeing you and your mom puttering about the garden. Please tell Googie I am sitting here quilting, and I put down my sewing so I could see every lovely thing in this video. I planted a liquid amber that my neighbor gifted me this spring, and my first leaf is turning color today! I’m thrilled as I live in Southern California and this is the only autumnal tree that grows in my area. Thank you for your uplifting and enjoyable videos.

My aunt lives in Cumbria (Windermere) and is close to your mum's age. I am in north Texas but have gotten to visit twice for a month each time. 💕
I often take Dad for a drive round Windermere - though yesterday we went over to Thorp’s to Salisbury and back x

Ha! I understand autocorrect! My aunt and uncle owned a restaurant for many years called the Porthole in Bowness. Now it is Porto, I believe. It was a Lucy's after the porthole. I guess it has been sold 3 times since Judy and Gianni owned it. It was a fabulous place to visit. I wish I could visit again. The gardens all around the area are magnificent.

Torn between loving cabbage white butterfly and also wishing they leave my cabbage etc alone
I haven't planted a single tulip bulb yet and won't until at least 20th November so don't panic! x
I live near Georgie and we are much less advanced than you are as your beech hedge has turned red already whereas mine is just on the turn and my Salvias are still flowering beautifully. We’ve had no frosts yet either and we get heavy frosts. But can you believe it can rain one side of the house and not the other? Great tip on feeding and the tour of your beautiful garden.
it is often the case the rain on one side of the house and not on the other - as you say, much less crunchy in the south xxx

Googie tours are interesting for us that aee getting older :) Just curious, did your Mom work & if so, when did she "retire" to this gardening actice life. Just wondering...so much is sedentary now.Thanks again!
she made patchwork quilts for a living - quite a big cottage industry where we lived near Cambridge - then she curated a museum of textile and embroidery for ten years - and always gardened x
