  • Racing cars aren't the first thing you think of when you hear the name Rolls-Royce. You'll probably struggle to even think of a competitive Rolls-Royce at all other than their famous rally car. Well, let us change that for you with the Marina Andrews Rolls-Royce Special.
    We sat down with the driver, who happens to be the father of the owner, to find out all about this unique little car.

    He's not right in saying there were no other British V8s in the early-'60s, except R-R's. Daimler made two: 4.5 litres and 2.5 litres.

    As far as it being the only ever Rolls-Royce race car, there was featured in a magazine not too long ago a single-seater based on I think a Silver Shadow engine and chassis that was I think semi-officially endorsed by the factory.

      If it didn't race in an international league, there wouldn't be any reason to go with a BRG colour scheme. Ecurie Ecosse used a dark blue, Saloon cars used whatever they felt like and Brabham used BRG and gold (even though they weren't a British team).

    They must know how much this looks like a Ferrari GTO from the front. And old man Ferrari didn't make a stink about this.
    The there is Rolls Royce acting like they have the right to literally "crush" someones car because their own engine is in it. And
    they willingly gave this group the engine for that very purpose. Rolls Royce was run by some serious snobs.

      "The there is Rolls Royce acting like they have the right to literally "crush" someones car because their own engine is in it." Using a trade mark engine without permission for racing or commercial enterprise is an infringement of laws. Making an amalgam circuit racer doesn't ruffle anybody's feathers.

    Why didn’t hot rodders get their hands on these engines when they first came out? Sydney Allard would have made a killing if he made a Rolls Royce Big Block conversion kit for the Ford Pilot and Zephyr.

    • @richardharrold9736
      @richardharrold9736 Рік тому

      Because the Bridgnorth Big Block is a massive lump! 4.75" bore spacing compared to the 4.38" of the Ford small-blocks that commonly go in those. The deck height is huge too, over ten inches compared to the 8.2" of a Ford 289/302 - even a Ford 351 Windsor is only 9.48" and those barely fit in a Zephyr. Also, the Rolls-Royce/Bentley unit made only about 180bhp in period, it did have a lot of torque but it really wasn't a great racing engine, and the head design isn't overly conducive to hot-rodding.

    • @richardharrold9736
      @richardharrold9736 Рік тому +1

      Also, I imagine that Grainger & Worrall would have had an exclusivity clause imposed on them in the contract under which they produced the engine for Rolls-Royce, so the only way of getting engines would have been from crashed Rolls-Royces and spending a fortune tuning them - no point when Ford, GM and Chrysler were only too happy to supply engines by the boat-load, complete with big valves, hogged-out ports and lumpy cams, and even offered credit, buy now, pay later from the proceeds of sales or racing prize cash...

  • @3RTracing

    this information is incorrect as far as the history of RR V8's. In the late 50's RR bought all the tooling from Studebaker-Packard for the Packard V8. It was shipped to England and modified to build the 6.3 Rolls V8 out of aluminum. That V8 was installed in the majority of the 61 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud II's AND the Bentley Continental II's. There were still some 6's built in 61 too but only by special order. 99% of all of the Roll's and Bentley's built in 62 were the 6.3 liter V8's. So your contention that Rolls had no vehicle V8's in the early 60's is incorrect. Further, as noted Daimler and a couple of other manufacturers had V8's too in the early 60's. Personally, my 61 Silver Cloud ll DID have a V8 with a GM THM transmission.
