The best thing is to cover your trees in Snow. Put the trees on the gorund, make groups of the trees and wait for the snow. Snow is the best insulation ever. It protects from the freeze, it protects from dryout and it protects from the wind. The problem is, that you have to live in area with snow😆. Where there is no snow during winter(more common these years in the middle of Europe) I just simply water groups of my trees once a week, specialy when the temeratures goes below zero in celsius. The water makes icy crust and insulate roots too.

Good thing you specified zones. I'm in 4B, and wintering over started roughly two months ago already.

Haha, that's right! I'm in zone 6 and I started at the same time as you, just in case! Granted, mine was pretty simple... just making sure the roots were well insulated. All of my winter hearty guys that I leave outside are safe to zone 3 anyways and on a covered, unheated set up... cheers!

I have stored my bonsai in an unheated space (covered porch with lots of windows) for the past 15 years in S Jersey. They have all done well, even when the temps warm slightly during the late day, esp when getting close to spring. Just moved and lost that space so I am looking into storing them outdoors in my garden (buried into soil, cover root mass/pots with burlap) then cover ground with plenty of natural insulation (leaves/mulch).

Ok, temperatures above 14F/-10C can't damage the roots, but frost has one more property - it freezes water in a pot. Moreover, the ice continues to evaporate (in case that you haven't snow), which means the substrate will dry out and the tree will die during the winter. Right? It seems to me that it would be worthwhile to reveal this problem in more detail

Any tips for areas that experience temperature swings of -10C to -40C?
Here in Ontario we get Winters with ice storms and thaws one day and -20C with snow the next.

With that kind of temperatures, you'd need some serious protection and likely a coldframe or an unheated greenhouse.

Juniper chinensis is rated to zon 4a. Is it really essential to protect it at -2°C? Or even -5°C? I have my olive trees outside at -8°C and they are fine. Shouldnt since Junipers and other like pines or spruces are much more cold resistent have no problem with those temps? A lot of tropical palms and trees could survive -2°C for a short time

    • @bonsaiempire

I was given a small Gardenia bonsai this year and its done very well through the summer, but now its getting down to the low 30's and high 20's, at night. I have a cold frame that I keep my Tridents and other trees in over winter, but Gardenias are tropical. It really doesnt like being indoors and looks rather weak. Some have said they leave them in a coldframe. Any body have any insight?
