For all the people asking about the dual audio feature of the S8 and Bluetooth 5, they aren't related, they are completely different things. Dual audio is not a feature of Bluetooth 5, plus the speakers you are using are Bluetooth Classic not Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). The new features in Bluetooth 5 are all about BLE, not Bluetooth Classic.
Gary Sims you said in your video I wouldn't be able to use a Bluetooth speaker/headset at far distances but I have been able to, I left my phone up stairs and went to my backyard and still have great connection, it's a pretty far distance so your wrong about that. Not try to spread hate I'm just telling you my experiences with Bluetooth 5.0
Gary, so maybe you should educate your colleagues from Android Authority first before bashing other youtubers ? I'm talking about this video from Android Authority "5 Reasons Why the Galaxy S8 Plus Is My Daily Driver".. starts after 5 minute mark or something..
You weren't using Bluetooth 5 in you little experiment. The actual range that you get for Bluetooth Classic depends on a bunch of things like the types of walls and the sensitivity of the receivers/transmitters in you Bluetooth speaker. In my video I was specifically talking about the Bluetooth 5 CODED connection type, which is not supported by the S8. I am not spreading hate I am talking the facts. Please stop spreading misinformation. Again I repeat your little test was NOT using Bluetooth 5.
Stonking great video Gary. Well done. One of my biggest issues with several manufacturers right now is disclosure. Advertising features which may or may not be available or included in a phone. It's no great shame to say BT5 hardware is included in the phone and software support will follow. It's been frustrating watching companies muddy the water with buzzwords, but not really delivering what they're promising.
JuanBagnell Here you are again Juan, searching for negative S8 videos and chiming in more anti-Samsung propaganda. 'Stonking great video Gary. Well done.', falling over yourself to praise these kind of videos. Pretty much all the BS you have come out with so far has been, well, BS, but you always know that people are stupid enough to jump on a bandwagon. You were wrong about the sensor, (school boy error), and you were wrong with your claim about the AKG earphones, which it clearly states in the specs that they are 'tuned' by AKG. After I schooled you on this, you banned me from PocketNow, nothing like a coward who can't cope with being wrong. Now you're backing this Bluetooth 5 nonsense, even though they didn't mention it. It was tech reviewers who made a thing of it. It's embarrassing how hard you're trying to shill for LG and big up the LG G6. Lets talk about the DAC on the G6, shall we? Where are your complaints for the single firing speaker, the cheaper processor, when they could have in fact used the 835, like what is seen in the Mi6, the mixing of specs depending on the country you are in, the shockingly poor battery life, as seen in XEETECHCARE's latest battery test, the modest LCD display, also the fact that it's far from bezel-less and isn't symmetrical. You're stretching it by claiming to be a tech reviewer.
Stop Media Fakery sorry but, how is the G6 not symmetrical? If you cut a line across the phone(horizontally or vertically), you'll get two equal halves. Or are you referring to the screen position?
I don't know about all of this guys specifics but the lag on my wireless headphones is definetly gone with S8. I couldn't even use my wireless headphones with my s7 because the lag was so terrible when watching videos.
William Anthony he said btooth 5 is faster when devices are close.he is saying the 2x speed 4x distance 8xdata claims are exaggerated and sugar coated.
I don't think Gary is making a small dig at any youtuber inparticular he's just saying people that review phones don't always know the full facts and they go off what the device says on the box whereas Gary will put things to the test and in depth to find out all the ins and outs of certain features...
Samsung never mentioned bluetooth 5 when they did the unboxing event. This is probably the reason why I was surprised when a UA-camr mentioned that this was available. I now understand why Samsung didn't mention it.
I love the way Gary develops his story - like a detective - checks the facts, documentation and consults the relevant parties. I guess it's a bit like Bixby - the hardware might be there but the software isn't quite ready yet (although Bixby is more within Samsung's control as opposed to Android O). At least it will work eventually which is better than had they just built-in BT 4.
Gary you're hands down the most informative tech UA-camr out there. Android Authority have done very well in getting you on board the team. keep the great videos coming mate 📱👍
Trinajskaa hes doing some educating and pointing out misleading sources.he leaves roasting for channels with demographics consisted of 10-14 year old kids.
We can use dual audio. I've tried it and it works flawlessly. The only issue you'll have is that the audio isn't perfectly synced if you're using two different types of speakers, but that's not the phone's fault.
It's not that the other UA-camrs don't know what they're talking about, it's that they didn't make a video specifically about the Bluetooth 5. He wasn't wrong. He just left it at that. It's up to the consumer to find out more and ask questions and use Google it look for more detailed videos.
so...how is my s8 streaming audio to 2 different devices? does that not require Bluetooth 5? I certainly haven't seen ANY other phone with Bluetooth 4.2 do that.
I think its fine for Samsung to put in the hardware to support Bluetooth 5. I have no doubt they will release some patch soon that will give at least 1 feature of Bluetooth. I mean, its not like Bt5 is so much different in SDK or whatever. Its mainly drivers now and sure Google is going to add it in O but that doesn't mean that what that has is not portable to N. I'd rather have the hardware to support something in the future, than not having the hardware at all. Its also why i don't understand why the GS8 doesn't have true USB-3 support. It has the connector, it has the chip, but it doesn't have the nice quick charge support of USB-3, nor the speeds. Its weird to block that as there is no reason to do that. In fact, they could sell new adapters with it. Having USB C + 3 on my Lumia 950 was amazing. Charging it within an half hour fully was really nice and handy (charging in the car would give me a full battery when arriving at work, and then also when i got home. I really hope they are going to support it with the S9, but i don't think its possible to patch that in later.
As for not having a full Bluetooth 5.0 support (Dual Audio is a Bluetooth 5.0 feature, so a little part of the Bluetooth 5.0 technology is enabled then) out of the box with the Galaxy S8 phones is ok as there isn't any Bluetooth 5.0 devices out yet that you can use the Bluetooth 5.0 on the Galaxy S8 phones with. So it's fine for now.
Tom-Helge Andersen Simple really, audio over Bluetooth is a feature of Bluetooth Classic, not BLE. Bluetooth 5 is all about BLE, the "Classic" part of Bluetooth 5 is the same as previous versions. Plus the speakers we are all using are Bluetooth 3 or 4, not 5.
Doesn't S8 support simultaneous connection of 2 bluetooth devices? Isn't it BT5 feature? If so, Samsung does unlock some capabilities of the newer bluetooth.
Ср Хйт I've been using this feature on my S8 and it is excellent. I seemlessly listen to music in the car then turn it off and its playing on my bluetooth headset. It is a feature of bluetooth 5 so you are correct!
masquirrel Actually, it works like this on iPhone 7 too. And I don't think it has bt5 in it. I meant 2 Bluetooth headphones or speakers playing audio simultaneously from S8.
Ср Хйт Hey that's possible because of an another Bluetooth antenna on the speaker or the headset itself... that's how the airpods work... both the headsets aren't simultaneously connected to the iPhone
Bluetooth 5 can use on any 2 Bluetooth device and 4.2 can only use on certain one which is specially build, you can't connect 2 device at the same time that's not apple made
Great video. A bunch of youtubers where talking about bluetooth 5 on this phone like if it was the coolest thing ever. Nice explanation to clear it all up
Had i known it wasn't gonna work i wouldn't have bought S8. i was killing myself trying to get it to work on the bluetooth in my truck and as getting annoyed. Thanks for the video, extremely helpful.
A correction here to be made. Android Oreo Beta for S8 is out there available as of now. I know the video was made a long time back. But it should be highlighted that it now available
the thing is, hardcore Samsung fans are the same as iSheeps. Blind and deaf. There's nothing you can do about them. btw, good video as usual Gary! - Galaxy Note 4 owner.
Timeyin Sholaye I don't think that is true. Most people just get a phone that fits into their budget but with the right features. Being a zealot for a phone maker is stupid.
Bluetooth 5 is a hardware spec same as WiFi, so yes list it IF you will eventually enable software support. Otherwise if you have BT 5 hardware and never plan on supporting anything beyond BT e.g. 4.2 then the spec should be listed as BT 4.2 not 5. A similar specification example are GPU's, DisplayPort limit is 1.2 but many will support the soon to be released DisplayPort 1.4 e.g. 'DisplayPort 1.4 Ready.'
They should most definitely have been upfront about it, however I've tried shopping for Bluetooth 5 speakers and can't find them anywhere, so no big deal but not good consumer service.
As it stands, 5.0 works for me with the split audio feature.. That's my use case with BT ( audio streaming ) so not bothered by it's other functional limitation right now.
I recently switched from an S5 to an S8. Now, the bluetooth range has been cut short when useing headphones or wearing my Gear S2 Classic. How could have the signal gotten weaker?
thanks to your efforts trying figure it out, S8 has its BT 5.0 hw support, just waiting for the Android O, hopefully Samsung might update sw by themself earlier just for BT 5, I think we can't say S8 users don't have BT 5.0 at all, at least they're on the first stage and capable of using 2x BT connected.
There is no current support for 2x speed on the S8. This is what my video is about. 2x speed is part of Bluetooth 5. It doesn't apply to streaming audio as that is Bluetooth Classic.
I see where that had Samsung popped the S8 with their own patch to access BT5 it could spawn up the same sort of mess that forced 802.11n into the market. Even though the same controller chip is in the pool, there would be several different sources peeing in the pool so to speak. This afternoons look at what is up with BT lately has been interesting.
Gary, As of May 2018 do we have phones with Bluetooth 5.0 which can connect with 2 or more speakers of Bluetooth 4.0, both of them in two seperate rooms? If yes, then does the speakers have a lag in between them in audio output?
Hi Gary, thanks for your sharp explaination. Question: have you tested the effective bitrate on the S8? Could it be the Samsung software that is giving support to the bluetooth 5 hw, or is it something that requires the base android version to support it? Thanks.
That is usual for samsung and others, purely documentation(some say that is no accidentally)....only open the source without anything.....now have some sdk from samsung for developing app and that is it.....that sdk is in your videos.....
7'49. Weird. Even though 4x range isn't supported yet in S8, maybe it will be with Android O. (Can no support for 4x range really be hardware related?)
I have been connecting two headsets since the day I bought my S8. Moreover, time to time I connect my two speakers to my S8 without any issues. For me, that is BT5 as it is the 1st time that I am able to do something like that.
the truth is the phone is ahead of it's time .. the phone is Bluetooth 5 Capable .. but it's not supported on Android N .. but Samsung still managed to pull it off .. so good for them .. I think that is truly amazing and I congratulate Samsung for there effort
PS. another thing that proves Samsung is ahead of it's time .. Android O's biggest features are multi window support (run 2 apps, side by side , "Samsung split screen" and the ability to minimize apps into floating mini windows :)) just like Samsung has been doing for some years :))
so .. after knowing all of this .. I can truly say I don't need to wait until next year for my update ,like Gary said , because I already have all Android O features on my device (Samsung S8+) .. and I already have Bluetooth 5 ..
Any clue if the iPhone 8+ and iPhone X Bluetooth 5.0 share the same problem.. the hardware is inside but the software not? Perhaps there’s an official Bluetooth 5.0 software date launch across all devices despite having the hardware inside?
That doesn't surprise me Samsung didn't respond to you. It took me 3 months to have Samsung finally send a response to me in regards to a broken in transit S8 case they sent me.
Sir, you have helped me tremendously and I'm very grateful for this video. I can't tell you how crazy I was going about not being able to connect my wireless bluetooth headsets to my S8+. Now, I'm angry with Samsung for not including bluetooth capability. This makes no sense whatsoever. Grrrrrr!
Gary, i would like to know will bt5 support higher bit rate files like FLAC for better sound quality which will negate the need for aptX and sony's LDAC
+Android Authority Excuse a possibly naive question, but You say that the "coded connection" that is required to get the "extended range" only manages something like ~100 Kbps. And then You go on to say that it won't be possible to use it for Your Bluetooth speaker. But surely it would work "in principle" if You manage to get both a phone and a speaker that support the "protocol" ?? I mean You can get "passable" audio encoded lower than a 100 kbps, Or is it something else that makes it "impossible" ? Thanks for all the great videos. Best regards.
The current Bluetooth Classic codec for audio has a max bit rate of 345 kbit/s for stereo. So, when you say "passable" it means you need to accept around 1/4 of what we have today.
hi Gary. I love your videos. I've got a question about Bluetooth 5.0. I own several pairs of wireless headphones, but none of them is bt 5.0. If I get a device with this feature, would I be able to benefit from it at all or I had to buy new headphones?
Hello Gary came across your vid and I liked the follow through on Samsung bluetooth 5.0. I have a question in regards to my Samsung frontier watch which will not turn on. (already sent back to SS and sent it back, unrepairable, due to water damage) . THE WATCH HAS NEVER SEEN OR BEEN TOUCHED BY WATER AND IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE IP68 RATING. At the time of this post it is still under warranty which they (SS) have done nothing. Can you direct me to someone to resolve my claim.
My June 22nd, 2018 update from Verizon just killed half my bluetooth device connections. :-/ I've tried contacting Samsung before and their policy seems to be one of, "looking into it" and then just making a new product that is full of different bugs.
Hi. I am considering to buy the g6. But the phone has the usb type c. Does the phone charge slower or something? because it is kind of inconvenient to find a usb type c and shit. What are the disadvantages and advantages
They simply should have said it as it is...if there is no documentation like this means that everyone was mislead believing S8 has BT 5.0, which I believe is "illegal". I would imagine they would be a lot more careful since the fiasco with the Note 7 last year!
hey Gary, great video and info as usual.concerning bluetooth i think it should be ditched. since 5 years am waiting for a phone that supports 2 wifi connections ( having 2 wifi chips ), one for internet access and the other for pairing, since wifi already has better range and X100000000 the speed. i am interested to hear your opinion. ( plz dont tell me wifi direct. its a stupid solution and hard to be accessed for normal ppl in my opinion ). thx love you.
I found bluetooth in my S8 is worst than my iPhone 7. I contacted the samsung and they have no answer for it other than to give me an another S8 or factory reset (not the one inside the settings option). I think that's not gonna fix this issue.
Honestly, what's the point? I don't really understand why Bluetooth 5 is essential. I get that if you had the option to put it in for future support you would (And good on samsung for doing that), but in the interim why is it a big deal that it doesn't have support? I'm sure using the (helpfully included) USBC-USBA connector and a reasonably cheap USB you could transfer files much faster, there's no bottleneck with Bluetooth 4 at the moment in regard to it's most common uses (Bluetooth speakers and headphones), none of the power saving features matter much when the S8 has a great battery life, and the extra range, as you've said, is useless for most applications (Probably made mainly for IOT devices, or MAYBE a smartwatch to connect further away)
For all the people asking about the dual audio feature of the S8 and Bluetooth 5, they aren't related, they are completely different things. I was thinking about that 2, seems like AA guys don't really communicate that much!
Gary Sims hey Gary is becoming the Sherlock Holmes of the Internet
You weren't using Bluetooth 5 in you little experiment. Mkbhd next video "Dear Gary".....
Ahmed Shams
Dear Apple
Dear Samsung
Dear Twitter
... definitely Dear Gary just like you said
MKBHD's head has become so big, that he now thinks he can tell these big companies what to do.
Stop Media Fakery he asks them to improve certain aspects of their products. God forbid!
Stop Media Fakery You're an idiot
Michael Zaragoza Diddums, did I say something against your hero? You need to stop worshipping and get some self-respect.
Shots fired at MKBHD video
Anshuman Jain why? He's not the only one who talked about Bluetooth 5.0 lol
Dom Noah its easier to target someone who is on top of the game.
Anshuman Jain I prefer MKBHD's videos
Nadun lochana perera ... But his is false.
Gary is the only reason I am still subscribed to this channel.
Ahmed Shams cool story bro
i was going to say that lol
Ahmed Shams Same here.
I’m an Apple fanboy and I love this guy. He’s very knowledgeable and spits that truth
"Very popular UA-camrs who don't know what they're talking about" - Definitely aimed at mkbhd...
Bartinater ! first thing I thought
Bartinater ! ; Yeah it was a shameless accusation!! We clearly know that he aimed it at MKBHD!!
but if it's not using Bluetooth 5.0, how can it connect with 2 Bluetooth device, does that mean 4.2 can connect with Bluetooth device after all?
Bartinater ! What he doesn't get is that MKBHD didn't specifically talk about the s8 and Bluetooth 5.0. His video is titled Bluetooth 5.0 explained
Same thought here

LOL Truth. Some long awaited (and certainly appreciated) improvements to audio, but the S8 still gets pantsed by the Axon 7.
JuanBagnell the only thing is that Samsung never even mentioned Bluetooth 5 at the S8 press event. Everyone else made a big deal about it.

What about the Dual Audio Feature?
yeah i second this since its only works with bluetooth 5.0
Muhammad Najmi Mohd Amir Yeah That's the point... if the software doesn't support it there can't be two audio streams!!
Exactly what was in my mind.
Swapnil Sen wrong, this feature does work on the s8.
dual audio has nothing to do with BT 5, its a Samsung feature

so...how is my s8 streaming audio to 2 different devices? does that not require Bluetooth 5? I certainly haven't seen ANY other phone with Bluetooth 4.2 do that.
Jamie Collett It isn't a Bluetooth 5 feature, just an add-on/innovation from Samsung related to Bluetooth Classic.
I see. Most of the tech UA-camrs are claiming that it's a feature of Bluetooth 5. Interesting video.
Jamie Collett Hence my comment about popular UA-cam personalities and their videos.

They should most definitely have been upfront about it, however I've tried shopping for Bluetooth 5 speakers and can't find them anywhere, so no big deal but not good consumer service.
can you please tell me the name of your private channel?
Thank you Gary! Really helpful information! And keep us posted if Samsung replied.
As it stands, 5.0 works for me with the split audio feature.. That's my use case with BT ( audio streaming ) so not bothered by it's other functional limitation right now.
The split audio feature is not related to Bluetooth 5. Audio is still over Bluetooth Classic. Bluetooth 5 is BLE.
So, split audio over BT can be implemented with BT 3/4/4.1/4.2 ?
I recently switched from an S5 to an S8. Now, the bluetooth range has been cut short when useing headphones or wearing my Gear S2 Classic. How could have the signal gotten weaker?
thanks to your efforts trying figure it out, S8 has its BT 5.0 hw support, just waiting for the Android O, hopefully Samsung might update sw by themself earlier just for BT 5,
I think we can't say S8 users don't have BT 5.0 at all, at least they're on the first stage and capable of using 2x BT connected.
The 2x audio feature has nothing to do with Bluetooth 5.
*****
I mean 2x speed , as you mentioned by Samsung spec. doc. in the vids ;)
Gary do a follow up in 3 months and/or 6 months to see any updates on this.
Are their going to be any giveaways soon??
Samsung like to custom android. I think Bluetooth 5 did come with S5 on shipping version of rom. the long length however may need an update.
Want accurate tech information... Listen to Gary *PERIOD* 🙅♂️
Dual audio has nothing to do with Bluetooth 5.
great video, thank you a lot for the information :) Best greetings from Austria. 👊
MKBHD have to see this video
the truth is the phone is ahead of it's time .. the phone is Bluetooth 5 Capable .. but it's not supported on Android N .. but Samsung still managed to pull it off .. so good for them .. I think that is truly amazing and I congratulate Samsung for there effort
PS. another thing that proves Samsung is ahead of it's time .. Android O's biggest features are
multi window support (run 2 apps, side by side , "Samsung split screen"
and the ability to minimize apps into floating mini windows :)) just like Samsung has been doing for some years :))
so .. after knowing all of this ..
I'm looking forward to using Bluetooth 5 in the future and hopefully in the OnePlus 5 or some other stock like Android device.
I'm interested in the Pixel XL 2 Bluetooth 5 I use wireless headphones constantly and i noticed a longer range in immediately.
Grrrrrr!
Please tell me what I can do now that all this time has gone past to get the long-distance Bluetooth working on my Galaxy S9
Is it on Peixl2 XL?
But Gary since Android is open source .. Samsung can tweak android N code and get it working right? so it may be a software update away.
Yeah, for sure, and I say as much in the video.
Gary, i would like to know will bt5 support higher bit rate files like FLAC for better sound quality which will negate the need for aptX and sony's LDAC
Let's just chill for Note 8 in August 2017, with Android Oreo, then boom we will rock Bluetooth for many metres! 😃👌
Gary Sims, you are awesome. You reveal to us the cunning of Samsung. 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
+Android Authority
Excuse a possibly naive question, but You say that the "coded connection" that is required to get the "extended range" only manages something like ~100 Kbps.
Can you root and get the software?
Well, they mostly likey did bug fixes from 4.2, so you are using the improvements.
Take a look at the chart. Point 2 and 4, both 11m/36ft through 2 walls each. The throughput is different, da?
hi Gary. I love your videos. I've got a question about Bluetooth 5.0. I own several pairs of wireless headphones, but none of them is bt 5.0. If I get a device with this feature, would I be able to benefit from it at all or I had to buy new headphones?
very helpful. please do a video on Android Fragmentation and how google can solve it
Hello Gary came across your vid and I liked the follow through on Samsung bluetooth 5.0.
Hi Gary. Can you confirm if BT5 is now functional on S8 with Android 9.0 Pie which Samsung just released for it?
Bruv this video os a year old, he wont read the comments
hi when the android O is installed thn will the s8 Bluetooth be 4 times range or not ? pls reply soon
Harshith Muni nope
My June 22nd, 2018 update from Verizon just killed half my bluetooth device connections. :-/ I've tried contacting Samsung before and their policy seems to be one of, "looking into it" and then just making a new product that is full of different bugs.
good investigation, thanks for sharing.
At 6:24 I was almost sure that Gary was going to say "And then it's going to be a few months while Samsung take Android N and *butcher it*."
Is it possible to use Bluetooth 5 on the Pixel 2 XL with Android O running?
Good video Gary 1st time to watch you. I have a 2015 Nissan X-trail and I and the Nissan Garage cannot get the phone to connect with my car any ideas
Hi. I am considering to buy the g6. But the phone has the usb type c. Does the phone charge slower or something? because it is kind of inconvenient to find a usb type c and shit. What are the disadvantages and advantages
What's all the fuss with bluetooth when we have wifi which is a lot better? We should be making more wifi compatible devices instead.
They simply should have said it as it is...if there is no documentation like this means that everyone was mislead believing S8 has BT 5.0, which I believe is "illegal". I would imagine they would be a lot more careful since the fiasco with the Note 7 last year!
0dinko they didn't advertise BT feature, they told it has BT 5 which it has and can be used after software update
hey Gary, great video and info as usual.concerning bluetooth i think it should be ditched.
since 5 years am waiting for a phone that supports 2 wifi connections ( having 2 wifi chips ), one for internet access and the other for pairing, since wifi already has better range and X100000000 the speed.
i am interested to hear your opinion. ( plz dont tell me wifi direct. its a stupid solution and hard to be accessed for normal ppl in my opinion ). thx love you.
Would this be the reason I can't pair my s8 with my car audio for music?!
Why can't you just use the Android O Beta to test? I have seen other people running O on the s8
mouthburn there is no Android O beta for the s8
***** that isn't official from Google, the s8 doesn't have any Android O custom roms
Oh my mistake, I see now it's only for Nexus or Pixel. Just a launcher for S8. My bad :)
Oneplus 5, Xperia XZ Premium and HTC U11 i believe have Bluetooth 5 aswell and will also not be able to use it, till next year.
So android O will allow bt5 to work properly?
Yes.
Can i connect the Samsung Galaxy S8 Bluetooth 5 with my car Bluetooth and a Bluetooth speaker Subwoofer together?
Thanks Gary for explaining it very well. Now i know.
Do Lineage OS (former Cyanage) supports Bluetooth 5 SDK!!!??
Very interesting, thanks Gary!
