I drove milk truck for over 27 years in the southwest part of Wisconsin I had a few bizarre things that I can remember from picking up dairy farms. But one that always stuck in my head was when I picked up a farm I noticed the inspection lid was laying on the floor when I walked in and I heard this faint meowing I popped the bulk tank lid open and here was a cat inside the tank of milk bobbing around he was really exhausted but thankfully after I grabbed him out he lived I seen him a few days later walking around in the barn. The strangest thing is he remember because every time I picked that farm up that cat would always come running to great me. I have alot of stories from picking up milk through the years some really funny some really sad situations

That cat knew you saved his life, and thanked you every time you picked up there. Great story!!!

That's pretty cool Ron I bet you have a lot of cool stories! Thank you for being a milk truck driver. Growing up I always had a Lot of respect for the guy that picked up our milk, Christmas day bad snow storms sweltering heat, it didn't matter he was always there never late.

We had a neighbor who had a blue roan cow that was an escape artist. She was constantly out and roaming. It became so often this happened you just looked for her and we would put a bit of feed out for her in a pen and there she would be, we would call the neighbor and let them know and we would go about our day. All the neighbors dealt with her. The neighbor had good fences but not for her, haha!

Haha I 100% agree with your statement about Jersey cows. Anytime one of them would get free she would be bending water bowls and breaking the windows in the barn unlatching doors, walking down the road, pulling spark plug wires off of tractors and walking away with them lol I could go on and on

I love Jerseys but I can't argue with your comment. They will make a mess. 🤪

We raised a few Jersey steers. Most misbehaved bunch, messing with gates, pushing the fence, biting off hoses, and more. Too smart for their own good but not smart enough to not get hurt.

in the mid 70s we had a jersey/angus cross milk cow, great cow gave the right amount of milk for our family, it was my job to milk her in the morning b4 school and in the evening after school. i was a young teen. anyways we kept the ground feed for her in a small building, i got the gallion coffee can of grain, took it to the barn and milked the cow. that evening i couldn;t find the cow, looked everywhere. like it just vanished. the next day was saturday, still no cow. that evening we heard a cow bawling and we found her in the building where we kept the ground feed. she had been in there nearly a day and a half eating the ground feed. when i got the feed to feed the cow i did'nt latch the door and she went in and the door closed behind her. so when i opened the door and she came barreling out wanting water and we tried to keep her from getting to water but she was determined and drank her fill. well you know what happened, she bloated like a massive balloon, lucky for her the vet made house calls a soon put her right. i got the clean all the poop out of the feed building and got a chewing out from my dad, but it turned out ok.

We had a Holstein springing heifer jump into the pen where the calf hutches were. She got inside and somehow turned herself around stuck her head out the door and started walking around with the hutch on her back. We managed to tip the hutch forward off her. This was before cell phone cameras, but in the panic probably wouldn't have gotten the pic anyway.

We had a heifer, probably 500 lbs., get out of our pasture and went into the neighbors back yard and fell in their swimming pool. I think she swam around in there a few hours before anyone realized it. The farmer next door brought his front end loader over and with some ropes around her, we were able to hoist her out. She was fine but it took a few hours to get her out and the neighbor wasn't too happy about our cow in his pool.

I've been watching and enjoying your videos for some time now, and it struck me today that you guys do more problem solving in a day than most people do in a month. You are excellent farmers which is such an important thing for all of us, and your just really fine people. Thank you for your efforts and expertise.

I like those stories from your dad. Here's mine:
Probably 15 years ago now one July night we got a really bad thunderstorm. We had this small jersey calf that was terrified of thunder or any sound for that matter. So in the middle of the night it was storming and she pulled her self out of her collar jumped over the side of the calf hutch and took off running. The next morning we noticed she was gone and we looked everywhere, I mean we spent four or five hours on the quads riding the property looking for her. I was a lot younger at the time and worried that she had probably gotten grabbed by a coyote thinking the worst. By the time lunchtime rolled around we were about ready to give up assuming the worst. Then we go out to the street by the mailbox and in the distance I can hear a faint sound. It was that calf and she was down inside the drain culvert which was surrounded by tall grass. She was like the perfect size to fit in there lol. She must've been running down the side of the road didn't see it and fell inside. It was about 5 1/2 feet deep, and it looked like she landed on her feet.. we went and pulled her out and she was completely fine not a scratch on her. I still remember that cow today her tag was yellow number 22, we had her right up until the dairy cows were sold off around 2007

Years ago we had a small silo with a 6 ft pit that we didn't use anymore. Well one night we could hear a cow bellowing echoing in that silo. Somehow a heifer got through the door and in that pit. We weren't sure what to do thought we'd have to butcher her. But we finally greased some planks and with some ropes and come along's we got her out. Dad knocked that silo down shortly after. Keep up the good work. I really enjoy your channel.

Just saw this! I had a 50-gallon drum out next to the barn, it had a bag of Calcium in it that I use for the dirt road to lay the dust. I had rained and kind of dissolved the calcium, the barrel was about half full, I go out around the barn and a heifer was there and drank about half of it!! She lived! We had a fence post just a little bit from the barn, so we could get thru without opening the gate- a cow tried to get thru there and got stuck halfway through! Had to get the chain saw and cut the post off to get her unstuck!

I use to spend summers on my aunt and uncles dairy farm. Cows roamed around and the yard was fenced in.. when they went up to get ready to milk someone didn't latch the gate. Sooo I walked into the kitchen to get coffee and there was a cow just standing in the middle of the kitchen.. I was about 9 yrs old trying to get this cow outside. Took me a few tries but I got her out. I kept telling her to NOT poop in the house!!! Lol

I have an odd cow story. Cows aren't supposed to be able to climb stairs... I had several heifers that were being housed in a small old barn on our farm in Woodbridge, CT. There was a set of stairs about shoulder width leading to the 2nd floor. One evening I went to the barn to feed them. When I climbed the hill they weren't there. I called them and waited, nothing. I called again and heard a low moo. I called again and heard a moo from above me. I looked up and there were the cows peeking out the window at me. This wasn't good. They weighed 400 to 600# at the time, how was I going to get them down? I tried leading them, nope. I tried enticing them with grain and hay, nope. So I gave up and said well, if you want your food you're going to have to get down by yourselves. I spent a sleepless night, tossing and turning. How could I get them down. Build a ramp, hire a crane? dismantle the old barn? The next morning I climbed the hill and to my relief saw that they had figured out how to climb back down the stairs, and were waiting for me to feed them. Needless to say, the stairs were barricaded as quickly as I could locate a hammer, some nails and some wood. Love you videos, brings back many memories of my Father and Uncles who were dairy farmers.

Great listening to your stories. My grandparents sold cows when they were make to switch from milk cans to bulk tanks, milk house was not big enough for thank and could not justify cost to build bigger. He also did milk pick up, all cans, would deliver clean cans on return trip. Sold cows and list his job doing can pick up, was a sad day for him.

Barn I have now was not setup for machines, doors were narrow, just wide enough for cows/wheel barrows, and with a hand laid rock foundation, changing it isn't something I have accomplished to this point but its on the list, anyhow acouple years ago we have three pens in the bottom, one isn't as big as the other 2, so only 6 head max is kept in there, at the time there was 4 heifers in there, a alleyway and walk through door/gate is in the middle and wood feed bunks are on each side, they are maybe only 4 feet long and in the shape of a concrete J bunk but made out of oak. Somehow how a cross bred heifer, and keep in mind all mine now are short legged or "Miniature" so they are about as wide as they are tall, was flipped in the feed bunk on the one side, belly and legs up when we found her............She was still alive but exhausted. Not being able to get equipment in I didn't know what to do, ended up taking two chain hoists over the barn beams with slings on her legs front and rear, lifted her, put a few digging bars over the bunk with a piece of plywood and slid her down that to the ground. She got up but had a serious crook in her neck. With the dairy industry gone here, vets aren't local and the ones I know about aren't very good, so not knowing what else to do we got her in a sick pen alone, and my son would rub her down with ben gay daily, it took a few months but her being alone and him working that neck area she did straighten out. Best part was by the time she got all straightened up, she pushed out a nice healthy bull calf!

Interesting video about the water tanks for the cattle. Enjoyed hearing the story about the calf stuck in the water tank. With cows being so curious, they probably get themselves in a lot of trouble. Having Milking Cows is a lot of work but you seem to have a good relationship with them and they trust you. It is interesting to watch the cows and how curious they are about the camera.

I haul milk in north east Wisconsin and Ide say one of the strangest ones I had was about 12 years ago Christmas Day. I stopped at one of my largest farms on that route about 28000. I hooked up my line and took temp and test sample then fired up the pump and walked up to the house to get the yearly Christmas brandy shot when I hear a gurgling sort of belaring from the barn. I walk down and in and there’s a cow hanging upside down with her back left leg caught between the two upper bars of one of the gates. Apparently she had a infection in her foot and they had her standing in a foot bath untill she decided she had enough of it and tried to hop over one of the two swing gates they had her pinched into place with. We eventually got her leg out with a skid loader and a chain then rolled over before she bloated to much.

    Would have been 1969.
    I was in 3’rd grade.
    Happened in the fall.
Every year after 2’nd cutting hay, Dad would put a temporary fence around the hay field and let them graze the 3’rd crop.
When I got home from school’ Dad told us, a cow was missing.
    We checked the fence.
    No holes in the fence.
    Went to all the neighbors.
None of them had an extra cow.
We did all the evening chores and by that time it was dark.
    Still no cow.
    Dad said,
    The fence isn’t down,
She must be in the field.
We finally found her in the field in a sinkhole that had collapsed under her.
Dad had to call in a bulldozer to dig her out.
It was very late till we got her to the barn.
Sadly, she never did well after that.
The next day at school, the teacher wanted to know what we were doing in the field the evening before that late at night
