- Soil testing is an important part of creating an amazing lawn. In this video series, I'll show you step by step how to use a soil test kit. Soil testing allows you to measure the ph level of your lawn. Based on the results you can then apply the correct levels of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium to great the perfect environment for you golf course lawn.
I chose to use the online soil testing kit from MySoil which uses an ion exchange resin to simulate plant roots. This method of nutrient uptake is much closer to what's actually happening. on your lawn vs. the traditional methods of crushing or drying a soil sample. My Soil's testing process measures what's actually available to your turf grass. This makes it a better option for soil testing. It allows you to more accurately amend any deficiencies in your soil.
By measuring the levels of nitrogen in the soil, phosphorus in the soil and potassium in the soil, you'll know exactly what type of fertilizer is the best fit for you particular lawn. You will also learn what the PH level of your soil is and will be given recommendations on whether to apply lime or sulphur to restore the proper balance. This soil test also measures the amount of micronutrients in your soil such as iron, magnesium and zinc.
This is a complete walk through. I show opening the kit all the way through mailing the sample out. I collect soil samples in 7 different locations in my lawn. I then show how to mix the soil samples and mail them out for testing. Once the results are made available online, I'll provide an update discussing the results so we can see how the soil amendments made over the summer have changed the soil. My hope is that this video will be helpful to any home owners wanting to do the same thing with their lawn.

Ron, per your advice. On your earlier video. I brought 2 of these along with the probe. Test kit worked as you stated and is very easy to do. Results showed I was low on P, K, S, Mn, Cu,B. Working to correct all and will send in 2nd test Kit to verify. Thanks for sharing this test kit information.

Glad you created a video on this subject. One other thing to mention: make sure no other material (I.e...rocks, grass or other foreign debris) is in the sample soil before adding to the solution...basically try to reduce foreign material to a minimum. These materials could interfere with the results.

Great video, I have a question? I want to do a soil test in the next couple of days for a customer. My question is, even though I will get the results in a couple of wks, Is ok to apply what ever I need to the lawn in the early spring around March? Thanks
Hi Eric. If you use the MySoil test shown in this video, you'll get the result within 1 week. If the results suggest applying fertilizer then i would wait until March to apply it. No point in fertilizing a dormant lawn.

Hi Elder. I like doing it twice per year. Early spring and Fall. Gives you the opportunity to see how the soil is changing based on the amendments being done.

I just received my Soil test back for both Front and back yard and I'm disappointed by the results. My lawn was looking great this year but I was shocked to see so many of the nutrients in the low category. I have a lawn service who firt and kill weeds and spend quite handsomely on their service🧐. I'm getting rid of them for sure now and am going this alone next year I need to dominate my neighbours.
Not surprising Joe. If your lawn looked great this year, imagine when you’re taking care of it yourself.
