Am I the only one shaking my head at buying an entire replacement panel only to cut out a small section to weld it in to a damaged panel? That's insanity.
I whole heartedly agree, but then he couldn’t get all the product names and manufacturers mentioned.
Actually quite opposite. If i replaced the whole section then we couldnt paint just that lower area. We would have to do the whole entire quarter and you would see even more products names and manufactures.
I think the point of the video was to show patch repair techniques. And showing product :)
What about the inside of the weld ,it could rust from there?
Depends on the actual amount of damage. Not all warpage is immediately visible. Or if you discover prior repairs that were hidden and now you need that full panel. Many scenarios here. I do agree it needs paint on the inside welds to prevent rust out. But then again.. How long will this vehicle remain road worthy?? It's definitely not a classic.

Pin holes come from your mixing ! You have to pull long and thin as you mix on the board . You add air by bad process. .

Off topic question: I love the paint side of the industry but don’t particularly have an interest in the actual body/repair side. Is it possible/reasonable to become successful in paint without knowing body?

Great video! Nice helper you have there! Word of caution on grinding welds. You may get a nice weld with little or no warping and ruin it by leaning too hard on your sanding disc and building too much heat. Go slowly and keep checking how hot the panel is getting. Ask me how I know!!!!
I've used the metal overheating to my advantage a few times too but yeah the metal heating up can definitely be a bad thing
Question, would you or did you treat the backside of the panel? It seems if you do nothing to the back all your work will be for nothing when it starts to rust.

What always confuses me, and nobody every really addresses it for some reason is, what about the back side of that weld???
Like, won't it just rust away since it's completely untouched and protected?
At least on that part, you could probably get to the other side to sand it and seal it up and paint to protect it, but you didn't, and nobody ever mentions doing that???
But also, what about the places that you can't even get to the other side...
What would you do then, if you wanted the repair to last more than 2 or 3 years?

man if this got a rust spot after this parade of products which one failed or is it sue them all to get the right one, really I do not think plastic surgery requires this craziness I think it is just an infomercial for expensive line of body make up products
Only thing I can say is you should be using a longer block. But as long as it looks straight in the end I guess it doesn't matter

I appreciate your input and ‘how to ‘ techniques, but I feel that at the outset where you mentioned that you are not a professional welder and you did a ‘rough’ job welding, the resulting ‘pockmark’ effects in the weld area only gave reason for all the ‘extra’ steps to fill in or cover up those areas only means more labor times as well as added expense for the job. Needing to buy / use added products just to eliminate the ‘weld-blemishes’ just seems to me to be unnecessary. I think doing a more effective job of welding would eliminate the added steps to ‘cover up’ any ‘sub par’ welding. I’m sure you are able to do better welding, and you probably did it that way for training your viewers, so I only say this as my own personal opinion. Time is money, and even in a ‘diy’ setting wouldn’t it make more sense to just buy and use only what one needs to get the same results? I DO appreciate the video and I did learn some valuable lessons so please accept my comments as more of a compliment rather than a criticism! Again thank you for your presentation. Keep ‘em comin’! 👍🏼🤔😎
😂 having perfectly smooth welds on body panels is extremely unrealistic. Even if they’re dimes, you still have to grind and sand them down. There’s no way around it. That’s just how it is.

i like to use fiberglass too especially on rust because well it can't rust if its fiberglass hehee just make sure to PREP PREP PREP the metal VERY well 95% of body work is preparing the surface to be repaired. you can do everything else right but if you don't prep PROPERLy first you're up shits creek lol AWESOME VIDEO AS ALWAYS ! I was recently quoted 1,300 dollars to have a bumper cover and one fender painted to OEM color no installation or prep and parts are both brand new oem. Does this sound right? I do allot with Cerakote so I have a decent spray set up I just needed a new spray gun so I ordered everything from eastwood for 550 and a gun from amazon and figured I would just do it myself
How do you protect the inside of that panel,i thought that part rusted from the inside out..great job
generally you dont unless its galvanized or you paint it being from a hole drilled on the other side... I used galvanized steel, this way it wont rust on the otherside.
The tip about using the Fast Etch is an excellent idea. I've always gone over any weld seams with polyester resin and some cabosil mixture to seal them before epoxy primer. pretty much the same idea as putting the short strand filler. Might be overkill but it was something I learned eons ago and have always done.

I know the purpose of the video was to show the work and I appreciate that, but watching all the steps and time involved I kept thinking damn it would have been a lot easier if your friend had installed the entire panel that he purchased instead of cutting out a patch panel.
That would have been way more work and paint involved as well

I have never even HELD a $40.00 rattle-can of spray paint. In my entire life.
But then again, my idea of body repair used to mean using pieces of wood and gooping them into dents and damaged areas with heavy roofing tar using a 2-inch putty knife, and letting the tar dry-out in the Sun for a few days until it quit wanting to sag off the car. Then a $5.00 can of Hardware Store Rust/Red Iron Oxide colored Farm Implement Primer to give it a good, strong, good-looking "skin". I thought that looked so classy. I spray painted the entire car with it, and I mean the ENTIRE car - chrome, lights, windows, wiper blades, etc. A single-edge razor took the paint off the windows and lights like MAGIC, and all the dirt and stuff came off in the ribbons of paint and the glass and signal lenses sparkled like new.
Before it all dried, it rained a little bit and the paint all mottled (my then being 16-year old idea of a Custom Paint Job) To preserve that wonderful mottling effect, I mopped the car about 5 times with that then-new product "Formica Floor Shine", and it would almost blind with shine!
Leaving High-School one day, the local State Patrol Trooper pulled me over. He's a really, great guy, and we all knew and liked him well in our small town. He inquired about my Mom, my Dad, my siblings, just a bunch of small-talk. All the other kids drove past us, his Blue and Red lights blinking, staring at me and him. When I finally asked him what I did "wrong?", I swear he almost started crying. He took his big Trooper hat off, held it to his chest, looked at me (I'm thinking "Oh my god, something bad has happened in my family and needs to inform me" and he said "You know, I've been a State Patrolman for a long time now..." here it comes, oh my god, what? It never gets easy, right? What??? "and NEVER in my career, EVER, have I pulled over... a BIG. SHINY. TURD!!!" He could barely get the words out, turned around, and as he walked back to his Cruiser all he was doing was snorting, guffawing and laughing out loud.
That was over half a CENTURY ago. Every EVERY time I've seen him after that, no matter where, no matter when, him and his Super-Duper State Patrolman VISION would see me well before I'd see him, and it was always the same thing when I'd see him: that big, beautiful toothy grin of his, POINTING at me, and laughing soundly. In the store, on the road, walking somewhere. ALWAYS.
But a $40.00 spray can of paint? How many of those did you use in this video? I dunno, man. I think I've proved to myself that a tube of roofing tar, a can of tractor primer and a razor blade can yield some pretty spectacular, quite memorable results, too.

Hey, i can't find a video on this subject. But I would love it, if not others as well, that you or someone would make a video explaining the different properties of the masking tapes and their functions.
There are so many types I feel, and as a novice, I am unsure if I really understand the differences between the types?

This is only a street driver no need for show quality! Besides, if you made that panel perfect the rest of it would stand out to much.

Bro, that finish is TIGHT! I wanted to do some work to my Cateye chevy, Rocker panels...Are all those two part sprays; One and dones? once it's mixed use it or lose it?... I use pre-cat epoxy paint in residential trim etc, but; you can reuse it once it's open...

I was curious if you would ever access the backside through a drain hole that you could create and then plug and spray corrosion protection on the panel's backside. Excellent DYI.

@@PaintSociety I did watch the entire video, showing some minor spritzing through a screw hole at the inner fender wheel opening is not coating the inside of the panel adequately. It will just rust through from the inside.

9:30 Pre nead the catalyst after purging a little air and before squeezing. It separates too.
You should be wearing a breathing mask when sanding metal and paint.
It will still rust through on reverse side!

It's funny how an experienced Auto Body person calls his orbital sander a DA. Orbital sanders are single action not dual action . You can't grind with an orbital sander

You should wear nitrile gloves when working with super clean or purple power, they have acid in them and are corrosive to your skin, I learned this the hard way

@@Tacman556 Stop the video at 3:31 and read the label on Eastwood Fast Etch (or you can google this product). It says "Leaves Zinc Phosphate Coating", I think Brian is referring to that.
I would avoid the harbor freight wire. Unless something has improved in the last 5+ years, I had poor results with their wire but much better results with wire from home depot. Using a Craftsman 120 volt flux-core welder.

Looks great at the end but if you live in the salt belt that's going to be rotted out in less than a year.
Spray can epoxy primer is not a good idea it's very wasteful.
Only wasteful if you don’t have a big enough area, I’ve had whole cans used on hoods before
Great video! I had to replace the hood and a fender on my old Jag due to a deer. The car is beige tan color and my used replacement panels were black, severely burned 30 years old black paint and clear coat. I finally got the panels nice with high build primer, but I had difficulty with the coverage of Dupli-Color paint. In fact, it took me 11 spray cans to get good coverage on the hood and fender. But, I got it and the covered it with 2K Spray-Max clear coat and it looks very good for a DIY job!
Might have been more cost effective if you had got a hold of a sprayer and compressor with the base, top and clear in cans
@@mikep509 Oh yes, for sure! But, I wanted to try to do it by myself. At 22$ Canadian per Dupli-Color can and 45$ Canadian per 2K clear coat cans, it was expensive. Lots of square foots in this hood!
@@alexandrecouture2462 ... yeah it's pricey with rattle cans.. I'm in canada too, I have borrowed a 16 gallon compressor and picked up a $130 paint sprayer on sale at Canadian tire for $50... I have a rear side door, front left fender and a spot on the roof near the windshield to fix/paint ... paint , primer, and clearcoat cost me $300 in cans... I just need time (and good weather lol) to work.on it... should take a day or so.... dialing in the sprayer is needed, and also for covering a bigger area like a roof, rattle cans are very difficult to use, so a sprayer was the way to go... 2009 toyota corolla, 150k km on the drive train... its in great shape except for a few corrosion spots... that im attempting to fix... bodyshops are quoting a fortune for this job if I was to go that route...

ok can you explain how cutting a section out of a new panel and welding it into place after you grind away all the rust to as good as you can get it and then applying a rust inhibitor and hoping the rust does not come back is easier than bolting the new panel in place and painting it if the color does not match??????? one is for sure the easier route to fix the rust i wonder which way is easier???????
If you’re asking this question you don’t need to be doing this kind of work in the first place. On what planet can you just “unbolt” a rear quarter panel on a freakin SUV? The front of the vehicle “unbolts”. The rear does not in most applications.

I bought a old Honda for $1500 with mint interior, outside was all burned up! and handed sanded the whole car and used cans of spray paint and light wet sanded. Used cans of clear coat. Let dry 30 days lightly wet sanded and used a buffer wheel and different maguirs compounds and when I was finished, people thought I spent $10,000 on a paint job. Never did anything like it before, just watched lots and lots of UA-cam videos. I just sold it for $7800 . I wanted $10,000 but money talks and bs walks! I made about $7k , I’m good.

I just have a question it's not about this video but I searched to see if you had done a show on diy"car paint" like from AutoZone(Dupont paint shop)or a truck,tractor and implement paint from rural King? I used the Majic diamond hard truck,tractor and implement paint(the blue can)and thought it was really good for being cheap. However now they don't have it here so I'm gonna try the Dupont paint shop paint from AutoZone along with the clear coat. Was curious if you have ever used any of it and if I should use a hardener with the clear coat(it says not necessary)I would think it would make it more durable. Any tips if you have used it please
I have 2014 F150 with steel body color painted bumper. The bumper has some surface rustvabout the size of your palm near the front wheel well. The paint is white platinum pearl paint. Can i use this method (other than welding patch panel) to repair the bumper and make it look good?

What a waste of money to buy epoxy primer and in a spray can and then throw most of it away.
It is a waste, but at least we know that our metal is protected
such a great guide, I have an old 08 chevy where paint just looked terrible but we rebuilt the engine and it runs great. We did this repaint on surfaces where sun hit directly (top and trunk) and the car looks brand new again! You make this look so easy which is why we should really appreciate the pros for the work they do. thank you for such a detailed and amazing guide.

I was one of the "spray can repair" people, then got a used 26 gallon compressor, an Areopro R500 gun and never looked back.
Now I get consistent, much better results.

You really should wear a respirator with that 2K Urethane Primer. That is a real isocyanate-based product, just like the stuff that runs through a gun.
I've never had any problems taking a finish off metal on any car/truck and applying lacquer primer surfacer to the bare metal. Primer is the adhesion prep (it's not classified as paint) to accept your finish coats. It sands well, exposes warps and issues of metal patches and won't rust at all depending on the length of time and prep work for the final coats of paint.
This is great but what about treating and rustproofing the inside of the repair?
