Wow, I feel like I've had a front row seat to the whole process of fishing for bait herring! Thanks so much, Max, for taking us all along. So informative. And scenic. And fun!
Wow Max! this is a wonderful video. Your photography is superb, and the editing and story telling smooth and clear. And great music. And of course--a fairly unique story and landscape. Thanks for creating this.
Awsome vid Max! You guys are on point, good team work. One of the best vids on comerchiel fishing. Appreciate the sound track in the back round. That did it!!
Ran a tender for Icicle Seafoods back in the day for the PWS Herring Roe fishery. That was a cluster compared to the bait fishery. Boats ramming each other, skiffs getting swamped, planes buzzing around with water so shallow and rocky that I knew we would rip the hull apart. You guys are so laid back compared to that fishery. Enjoy the calm as the excitement starts soon!
Sam is such a great guy. I fished Kodiak for 12 years, and when he had the Devotion I always ALWAYS wanted to go. The Anthem is a gorgeous boat. Great work, and say hi to Kiluida and Santa Flavia!(love the pivot point salmon set!!!)
My compliments from a fellow fisherman, great video! I will be back on Kodiak in a few weeks. Going to try and chase some silvers to finish out the season. Good luck out there ✌️
love the video sir I'm actually heading out of Massachusetts in a month on the look out for a deck hand job. any recommendations that could help me and or know of anyone needing some hands. have a great day stay safe.
Thank you! I'd say hang out on the docks that have the boats doing the fishery you're looking to get into and talk to lots of people. Hanging out in the coffee shops or bars around the harbor is probably also a good bet! Good luck!
Hey Max, I want to head to alaska for Roe Herring season 2023. I know it's in the spring. When exactly would you recommend showing up and to which docks exactly? I am green but I can work and I can cook.
Heck yeah! It can be a hard fishery to get into, and I definitely cannot say for certain you will find a job. That being said, showing up and talking to people is probably the best chance of finding a boat to get on. I'm not sure about other towns, but on Kodiak you'd want to show up early March and walk St. Paul's docks. Hanging out at Harborside Coffee also might be a good idea. People put job listings up on the boards sometimes. Keep in mind that the Sitka fishery happens before Kodiak, so some boats will already have crews, but not everyone does Sitka.
@Max Kobuk okay sorry for the late response. I checked the first couple days but didn't see anything so just checking notifications now. So Kodiak early March? What about Petersburg? Thanks for the response and the insight. I know the jobs can be hard to get...but I know they're available. However I have also heard about the decreased demand for herring roe...im sure that will affect my chances too.
Thanks! They are one and the same, it’s the roe herring that isn’t great to eat (they’re harvested for the eggs mainly but the rest also gets used). The oil content is what makes bait herring good to eat
@@MaxKobuk hello . I watched the video but my problem it's i can't the understand the English..... I hope someday to be fishing in the Alaska thank you very much

Thanks for watching! I appreciate it
Как здорово видеть счастливые лица рыбаков буквально всё в предвкушении большого улова ,свободные и счастливые люди удачи вам!
Thank you!
Great Video Max. Really well done on the editing and drone shots. I feel like a learned a few things about the herring bait fishery.
Thanks, I appreciate it! 🤙🏻
Great vid, from the wheelhouse to the stern covered the whole set.Being only bait grade how much a pound is the herring worth to the boat?
Thanks! It’s actually food grade as well, there just isn’t a market in Alaska yet. We sell it by the ton, and the price varies over time
The editing is on point! Amazing job dude👍
How many tons does the Athena hold? Great video by the way…..hell and gone from my life in Albuquerque, NM!
Thanks for watching! The Anthem* holds around 90 tons
Great Video! Fun to watch..

hey Max , how much does it cost to buy a Fishing vessel like this ? Thanks
Wayyy more than I have! 😂
This is awesome! How much does the boat hold? Do you have a tour of the interior?
Thanks for watching! She holds 90 tons. I didn’t film a tour this time but maybe next year!
nice video thank u for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Good job young man!! 🎣🎣🎣
Best video ever!
Thank you!
😎😄👍
How much tons did yall catch?
Very cool video, "thats the way to do it , money for nothing (almost)and the chicks are free" ? lol🤘
Hey buddy, I’ve been doing trolling as a full time deckboss and I’m wondering how this job would handle for a fifteen year old?
I think it depends on the 15 year old! I started my first summer when I was 16.
Great Job Max, how big is the boat and the net?
Thanks! 58x31’ and I’m not sure exactly on the net length
Man I always wanted to try a job like that. Your so lucky.
Very blessed! Thanks for watching
I know the row season is only one day. How long is the bait season?
Roe season actually lasts multiple days or even weeks depending on how the herring are acting. Bait season usually lasts 2-3 weeks.
❤
I hope you will be able to upload more like this
I'm making another one in a month actually! Stay tuned!
I assume "bait herring" is for bait use and not consumption? Soyy did not watch all the way through.
That’s correct!
Very interesting thanks
Good video, thanks
