  • I believe this was the 1976 125 National in San Antonio. Hotter than hell too if I recall. I'm not sure of all the guys' #s, so make a comment if you spot anyone. THX

Marty Smith was the first real MX idol. We all worshipped DeCoster but wanted to be Marty. I don't think any racer since has been so cool.

Was just thinking the other day...the first rider with his style and charisma since, is Jett Lawrence.

So rare to see any film of the legendary 1976 season! The battle between Hannah and Smith was epic! The machines were amazing! It is even more historically important given Marty Smith’s recent passing. He is a legend and icon of the sport and this film really highlights why; his style and speed was ahead of the time. Thanks for sharing!

I feel like this was the beginning of american motocross with a lot of future stars in the beginning of their careers. Smith, Hannah, LaPorte, Wise, Glover, Reid. Marty Smith was definitely the first superstar of american motocross. He was fast, stylish, and looked so cool in his gear. Everybody wanted to look like him, even a very young team Honda rider Jeff Ward.

thanks for this great blast from the past Michael ! I was able to get to many tracks in Texas over the years, but only made it to Lake Whitney Nationals in the early 80s. San Antonio looked natural and dry.

Wasn't the following year the "Let Brock Bye" incident? Damn, lot's of good times at Cycle-Rama where this took place, Sayers MX, Rio Bravo, Rabbit Run, Lake Whitney, and many other smaller places in Texas.

I always wanted to look like Marty Smith. I tried unsuccessfully to get the Hallman leathers custom made with HONDA down the side and the factory jersey which had the red stripe down the arm.

I remember back in the late 70's (very late) everybody wanted to be like Marty Smith on the race track, we all used to dress like him on the bike! It was the golden era of Motocross, I remember my 1st bike a used 74 Bultaco Pursang 125 that I purchased from a small Bultaco dealer here in Los Angeles called Bay Area Bultaco near Weschester by the airport, but I wanted a CR125 so bad I was 14-15 y/o, didn't get a CR till a couple of years latter.

A few years ago there was a couple of articles online that documented the 1976 125 Nationals behind the scenes. One was about Bob Hannah and Bill Buchka going to all the races together in a box van. They kept the AC off all year in the vehicle and in hotels, so they'd both be ready for the blistering hot race conditions. The other article was about Marty Smith and Dave Arnold (I think) building their own RC125 for the US Grand Prix at Mid-Ohio. The works Honda was uncompetitive and unreliable so they went about building their own race bike without Honda's knowledge. When they rolled it out of the van the Honda execs freaked out. Of course Marty went 1-1 that day. I can't find either of these two great articles and thought maybe somebody could steer me to them. They were lengthy probably an hour read all together

Don't know whatever happened to Don Kudalski (#255 here) He was very Fast but seemed to disappear without a trace. I think he had non-factory bikes but some support from the Honda Factory in '76 ... Anybody?
