This Guitar Synth has so much potential. Practically anything you can plug in with a standard 1/4" cable can become a synth of its own. Guitar, bass, foley, samples. This is such a huge leap forward that people will still be finding ways to create new sounds with this well into the future (at least with this technology!)
I like it. It’s like any gear, if you are a creative person you will be able to do something interesting with it. If you are expecting it to be the greatest thing ever invented, you are most likely disappointed with a lot of things.
I need to know if this pedal has the original roland GR-300 Synth from the late 70’s as a preset option. Does anyone know? The GR-300 was a one trick pony that needed a synth guitar usually made by Roland or Ibanez back then that also required a 24 pin cable. Pat Metheny used the GR-300. I use one but want to see if this Boss SY300 can work as a passable back-up.
I bought one around 3 years back to use for bass. The fixed presets are of no use at all. Maybe a couple. Where this thing shines is when you get to make your own User presets. A 3 oscillator synth is what it begins with. After that you can alter anything that follows. Even change the order in which each oscillator is placed in the stream. Place what effect you want, fully programmable effects can be placed in any order on either of the 3 oscillators. This video don't even touch the capabilities this 300 has, and all through a standard instrument cable and stereo out. latency is nill. I was looking for an octave pedal that never searched or wobbled on everything below an open A. It does 2 octaves down and 2 octaves up. One octave down on open E, instant octave below and steady as a rock as long as I let it sustain. But it takes patience and learning what does what and how to program this thing. In 3 years I have programmed around 30 patches that are totally useable musically. One thing is a must... The midi doesn't drive another synth. Not made to. To the GR-55 for that. totally different kind of pedal. I started and thought, what the heck is this thing?? I play bass, I know nothing about oscillators. But trial and error. Wonder what this thing is? What will this do? For anyone that has the time to make some totally unique, only you have patch, this 300 is awesome. I simply midi to my Roland FC-300 and hide the pedal. Assign what effect you want to which of the 300's set of positions you want and only use the ones you want. With the FC-300, which has 2 expression pedals and can add 3 more. May get the new GT-1B and midi it to the FC-300, too.
got the SY-300. Do you know where is the general attack. I made a sound. Realy like my sound but i want to put attack for the sound to come slowly. Have an idea? Thanks!!
Does anyone know if the pickups you have affect the sound of this pedal? Or does it completely alter the tone to something uniform, regardless of the signal it's receiving?
I know a lot of people joke about it, but I am a composer pf tv/film music as well as being a gigging musician on the weekends. It would be nice to be able to do some some professional composing with this thing, especially pad and lead sort of sounds, for the tv stuff, and then take to a gig, use it as a multi effects when needed and pull up synth presets to make up for lack of a keyboard player, with quality sounds. Have convincing pianos , organs and lead synths. The just switch over to do some, say, police style multieffect guitar stuff. I think what I am trying to say is I would pay a premium for something tht had all the multieffects of a BOSS GT with a full featured guitar synth. If this does this, it doesn't come across in any of the demos I've seen. It would absolutely make this a line 6 killer. Especially if it could do amp modeling to boot. Imagine the possibilities. If it could all those things and do them well, this would easily be a box I would spend $1500 - $2000 on.
The issue here I think, and with all Boss-modelers is that they sound a bit thin and screechy. It has something to do with the core technology. (Older models had COSM, and I'm not sure if this is the same kind of modeling). It sounds okay on its own, but you can't get it to fit in well with a mix. It's really difficult. However, since this is not a guitar modeler, but more of a synth, and because of the vast amount of stuff in it, maybe it's still a great product to check out.
Not saying anything about the synths. I'm saying that their effect pedals don't sound very good. I bet their synths are much better as they're 4x the price tag.
Nice playing as always, Alex,. Was hoping to hear some Fripp/Crimson type stuff, or some old Stevie Wonder riffs as it sounds like this box could pull it off. It seems to track very well. Hats off to Boss for making me need to get a 2nd or 3rd job. :)
Idk if my questioned will be answered but I noticed this has midi in and out. Can this function as a sound module and be controlled with say a keyboard? Also can you midi out into a sound module with breath control and use it as a breath controlled guitar?
I hate when people are testing something that has alot of psychedelic potential and they just noodle around on a bunch of blues and jazz licks, PLAY SOMETHING WEIRD!!!
Joshua Vance because most people are not artistic as you and me that is why we are so unique. . i got problem finding good music nowadays and as i get older i do get more picky...
Someone knows if it is possible to sample with the RC pedals (from the old RC3 to RC300)? And also, is it possible to import in it (or in the boss'software) midi sounds made from other software (Ableton for example)? Thanks in advance.
I have a GR-55 and I love it. I've listened to several demos now of this SY-300 and it's just terrible. Great innovation to not need the special pickup, which is always a pain, but where are the great models of acoustic and electric guitars and amps? And all the great Roland pianos and other synth sounds? This thing just sounds like a toy. It's too bad, because the Gr-55 is great, and should be developed further. There is a low frequency filter that they should have put in the Gr-55 to prevent wacky false triggering, and with the increase in computer power, probably could vastly increase the quality of the guitar models, effects, and polyphony of the synths. I kind of feel somebody at Roland had a meeting and said "hey it's been awhile since we put out a guitar synth, let's slap a launch together", everybody said "yes sir" and did the shitty launch. Meanwhile there is all this amazing modeling and synth technology Roland owns, and are not using with this unit. Let's get done with this shitty launch fellas, and start working on the GR-550 now. A GR-55 with effects as good as the axe-fx, sends midi out to control other synths as good as the fishman, more flexibility in outputs and routing, a sound library as good as Omnisphere, and the ability to share patches for it in an online community. We need some real leadership at Roland, not corporate bubble heads. Make it happen.
There's a choice of a Roland Gr-55, SY-300 and maybe a Roland GI-10 guitar midi interface if you want to hook up a good sounding synth that goes even far beyond than just having a gr-55 itself. I have both the GI-10 and the SY-300. I couldn't be more happier but everything is a matter of opinions.
Ok the text looks convincing, so I am also going to ask Roland if you are reading this, please, the sy300 doesnt need a pickup, so why dont you just incorporate a gk3 inside the device so guitars dont look ridiculous? Also, make it easy to download stuff and get samples. Also dont name it 550, because that is when you get predictable, better call it gr 65 or 70. Oh, and dont make it too expensive.
Like before I always hear a slight delay in player reaction, and the canned material is slow and easy. It just doesn't have the kick of being on or ahead of the beat. I have perfect time and have used a Korg Z3. At high pitch it tracks with grit. Maybe I'm off, waddya think people?
Nice work! Very nice conpositions and great playing! Some of the sounds are very cool-others a little weird but at least its midi programmable unlike all the Electro Harmonix stuff which sounds good but you have to manually chabge everything which is impossible in a gig setting
Sounds amazing. I have been using a GR-55 as my main source of sounds and want to make a change.. Can I ask some questions? Does it have a Hollow analog like pad, any kind of electric piano(Rhodes or Wurly), an acoustic guitar sound or a a Hammond Organ sound? Thanx. I am considering picking one up.
There are much better demos on Andertons etc. This thing is a real synth. It's not converting to midi so you can't trigger samples with it but that's why it tracks as well as an amp I'm sure. This is a step above in terms of tracking. If you listen, There's none of that GK synth glitching I hated with the git synth I sold. Must have this!
I jave a GT10, I was thinking I could buy a gt100 or this toy sy300. I am so undecided.. Some people say GT100 has much better quality than gt10, others say there is not much difference in sound quality between both
for me the best to have is a 12 strings guitar, acoustic guitar, harmonica, violin, strings, accordion and so old synth to sound like Jump, organs, mellotron so it's not the good thing for that so next ! EHX first, Apple too, with Big Sur it's impossible to play with a gk3 (it lasts many months)
+Anti Phase warmer tone for the lower strings to make it sound like a bass and guitar on the same instrument. idk his personal reasons, just a hypothesis.
Para cuando fusión con Prophet? Roland tiene muy buenos sintes tambíen, quizas actualizar con sonidos mas modernos los Gr de fabrica, con sistema de audio como este Sy y venderlos a 4000 dolares y con los años bajarlos de precío¡
Where are the good reviews of this pedal that really get into customizing the sounds like a real synthesizer? I would like to see some really good players showing the potential of this thing, not showing off these dated presets. I was excited for this but none of the demos are really selling this...

I love me some of those 80s synth sounds!
Nice! Now I can play the entire sega genesis game sound tracks!
Chris Arias Look up the MXR blue box, would be great for 16 bit music and it's only $70
Always a joy to watch Alex do his stuff
Thanks!!! This demonstrates tracking and responsiveness brilliantly! Ordering, based on this video.
You are the greatest Alex!
I love using mine to layer 2 different guitar tones live.
Excellent demo of the pedal. Cool tracks in their own right, this pedal/synth sounds so dope, would love to get my hands on one and fiddle around
Como sempre uma bela apresentação. Alex é o cara !
Best Demo yet!!

Great sounding unit.... wish this could be controlled via Bluetooth and iOS like the Eventide H9 but it's not to be. BUMMER.
The guitar work on Forest Call was well done.

good video !! you play well
Any idea how I can play the effect "pat heritage" or "decelerated" in a pedal zoom g2? or create it somehow?
whats the guitar that you are using?
no need to use MIDI pickup?
Is this a polyphonic?

Or a Roland gr55 , a and b pedal, feedback booster pedal into a Boss Sy1 pedal or Boss Sy300.
for me the best to have is a 12 strings guitar, acoustic guitar, harmonica, violin, strings, accordion and so
old synth to sound like Jump, organs, mellotron so it's not the good thing for that so next ! EHX first, Apple too,

AWSOME! do you prefer GR55 or this unit, interested in your views, thanks
I second that question !
as I connect to the Boss GT -10 ??????? MIDI
hi, what if I fancy to use presets from ios?
why there are 2 lower strings painted black on 8-string guitar?
could be tapewounds
+kpgpwi64 but what for?
+Anti Phase warmer tone for the lower strings to make it sound like a bass and guitar on the same instrument. idk his personal reasons, just a hypothesis.
+kpgpwi64 interesting, thanks!
***** never heard of him, but I like your name
...Can it be used with an expression pedal?
Yes, the parameters can be controlled with an expression. There is another video with Alex showing this
This would be essential if I were writing music for porn movies back in the 70's!
The GR-55 is still king.
Fab demo as always by Alex, but then again, he can make even the crap gear sound good :-)
Very cool, useful sounds, nice construction, but the price is a huge downside. 500 box would be nice friends!

One of the most used guitars used by metal players.
@@chase2787 lol, no it's not
Does the SY300 have piano sounds?
Check out the Sweetwater you tube clip...so much better info than Boss gives about the SY300
Anyone knows how to get there backing tracks ?
make a seven string version and i'll buy it immediately.
It’ll work with any guitar with a pickup. No special pickup needed.
Maybe you missed him using an 8-string guitar during a few segments?
