3D Printing a Samus Metroid Helmet - Zortrax M300
Вставка
- Опубліковано 1 сер 2024
- Zortrax sent us their M300 3D Printer and a pile of filament to create a project. Our family and cosplay counterparts, Jaimi and Rob, were crafting a Samus costume from the Metroid video games and wanted to 3D print the helmet. What a great way to try out the large build volume of the M300 and make an awesome cosplay helmet!

Hey, for easy accenting of the recessed area's look into gunpla panel lining. Same technique on a larger work piece. First Gloss coat your paint job. Then use black gloss enamel and thinner mix and let capillary action fill in the lines. Use thinner on a paper towel afterwords to clean up anything you goofed on. So fast and looks great.
That was cool QQQQQQQQQ
How much does that particular 3D printing model run?
Not sure if you guys reply to comments, but do you apply primer after wet sanding at 400 grit?
I just finished wet sanding and it's very smooth but I'm scared that the primer might ruin that
"grey primer is like a magic wand for revealing all of my crimes." I love that. thanks for the video.
Haha, it's so true. :D
This has all the things i love: samus, art with 3d printer, procrastination.... yeah, gotta love it
That looks incredible Brit!!! Great job!!
Make Brooklyn
It's awesome seeing how close knit the 3D printing community is. Hearing each person reference other youtubers and getting inspiration from each other is inspiring. Can't wait to get my own printer
My wife is fan of Samus Aran! she have been telling me to make her a full armor Samus suit! with this now she won't let me even sleep!!! LOL! thanks guys! You are amazing as always... 😃
Uh, happy accident?
We're enablers!
same but i am huge samus fan and i want the same thing lmao
Wow that is so sharp. Great job.
It's so exciting seeing such attention to detail and perfectionism while overcoming problems along the way in producing a one off piece of art !!
I love the fact that she give safety info while showing her work! Great video
That turned out absolutely amazing!
Hey thanks Jerry! =D
Hi
Right, I have to sub to you too Barnacles Nerdgasm! :)
WOW!!! I RARELY see someone take this much time and take so many steps to get the project done right. This was incredible
Your skills and patience are amazing
Brown spots are probably caused by the nozzle dragging and pickling up filament and burning. That would also cause a layer shift as well.
Good to know!
large PLA prints Do warp this is the chief cause of your issue even with good adhesion to the print surface. this caused what joe indicated. Part warps causng nozzle to touch previous layers. this causes the x/y axis motors to become overload and skip steps which cause the miss-aligned layers. It also caused your print to detach from the supports. I printed a deadspace healmet i modeled in tinkercad/meshmixer. and i had to break it down in several parts to avoid this issue.
this video is like a god send i have been torn between two cosplays to be my next make .... samus or the fallout4 t-51 power suit. i love watching your videos when working on projects, they keep me motivated.
Those both sound like awesome projects!
FANTASTIC WORK. Really put in the extra time to make it perfect and it shows!
Nice job keeping people informed about the safety issues when working with tools and chemicals.
We do our best!
Whoa! Awesome job! And thanks for linking my file!!
Thank you for creating and sharing such an awesome helmet!
You did a great job with the model! :)
Talaaya Thanks! Your suits are amazing! I followed the build of your first one over on therpf :)
Jacob Morin what do you use to build your files?
This is so cool , even if I had a printer , I could not do it Great job!
Even if I had a printer I wouldn't know how to star.🤷♀️
Wow, that helmet looks great, and I love how much build detail you included in this video!
Knowledge, creativity, resources and hard work. Nicely done!
"Zortrax" sounds like an enemy Samus might fight.
If you ever print anything else in HIPS try giving plastic model glues a try. From experience they are much stronger than super glue. They basically chemically fuse polystyrene parts together. Strongest bond I have ever seen in an adhesive.
We got some of that glue! The model glue worked great for gluing styrene to styrene. But when I tried styrene to the Z-HIPS, the glue never cured and the high impact polystyrene filament got all mushy. That was just one, quick test, though, before I switched to superglue.
Usually plastic models are made from ABS, so this plastic model glue really only works well on ABS, not really great for Styrene. I would also suggest being very light with the glue as it is meant to melt plastics together rather than stick them together.
@@TheLongHairedFellow for styrene you can use dichloromethane, which is a solvant, works really well,
OMG! The result is so satisfying! It's really amazing. Love it.
Getting ready to start my own Varia Suit! Printing the entire thing on my CR-10, this was a huge help. As always your work is incredible!
Looks soooooo gooooood!
Thank you!
i saw someone print a entire helmet with a holo sphere inside the helmet. a sphere doesnt require any infill because of the nature of the shape and so you can basically print a helmet with mostly a void inside and then supports around that. Saves you a bunch of time, filament, cleanup if you do it this way. While i havent personally tried this trick i saw someone do it with a black panther mask and it cut down their print time and material significantly.
That’s a really cool idea!
Oooh, interesting!
Was it Razem Art who made the Black Panther Mask??
This sound like a great idea!
Also, not making fun or anything but I totally imagined a holographic sphere when I first read this. Maybe a cosplay idea for Simply Nailogical
The helmet was far and away the best part of the costume. Awesome work!
Thank you everyone involved for being inspiring
shifts like the one in your failed print happen when the belts skip a notch. i think that usually happens when they arent tight enough
Thanks, I'll check the belt tightness.
It also happens when you go to the very edge and your printer runs into the side. It throws the whole print off in one axis.
@@punishedprops I can't find the rotary tool you used - you linked to the Dremel 4000 (which I have already) but the one you used is like a weird handheld version and it looks battery powered!
Brittany you are Samus no one can convince me otherwise. Also--awesome printer! The "weee" at 11:36 while using your rotary tool killed me 🤣
edit: BILL KILLED ANOTHER DREMMEL. MURDERRRRRRR.
Ohhhh SNAP. My secret it out...
Punished Props Academy why did you cut your hair and dye it brown? No complaints on the brown, Samus, but why cut it?
We killed their dremel 2 seconds. Nice, they turn up grab the equipment and brutally murder it in cold electronic rage! * Crowd forms outside the lair with led torches and EVA foam pitchforks chanting for a Styrofoam head on a platter *.
That "weee" Part. Me Too
Its was 11:40
As a big fan of the Metroid series, that helmet came out looking absolutely fantastic! Kudos and great job!
So Hyped for Metroid Prime 4!
I love your problem-solving skills with the prints. Half the battle of owning a 3D printer is making the best of things.
Brittany - Great project! Please consider working over a tarp or dropcloth to collect dust when sanding outside. The fine plastic, epoxy, and paint particulate can easily be washed into and contaminate your nearby aquatic environments by rain and other runoff
Thank you for the advice, we’ll use a tarp in the future.
10:41 that smiley face :D
Nice catch :D
Awesome build, Brit. Keep on making!
Its always nice to see people useing evercoat ive used quite a bit on cars. Ive also got like 3 or 4 diffrent helmts to do
bill is always killing other peoples dremels
You're right, this is the second one!

that surface epoxy coat made a huge difference, that looks amazing.
Loving your attention to detail with your finishing. I honestly don't see that enough. Love it!
She used Fusion on Samus's helmet. If you get my reference, you get a cookie.
*proceeds to eat cookie*
Zortax - expensive, not very good and can ruin a lot of material over very long print times. Got it.
The Zortrax m200 is actually one of the best consumer grade 3d printers available . Its print quality is ridiculously awesome compared to every other printer . Unfortunately it's also very expensive and so is its material . If I had the money I would get one .
I'm curious as to who their target audience is. I'd probably have less problems with a 3D printer from china at the fraction of the price.
i own 5 m200s, they are by far 1 of my best printers but they can be princesses, i own about 30 printers in total though and have tested out a ton more
Great choice of material and treatment for the visor. It complements all the hard work on that helmet perfectly.
Brilliant, I am in love! opens up a lot of ideas for me with printing
FOR THE HORDE
FOR THE ALLIANCE
Nice job, great attention to detail.
wow that visor technique is awesome, and the rest of the helmet too! Amazing work!
Very good repair work. The mark of a good maker is how well they can do repairs.
Amazing job as usual. So much stuff done to make that level of prop!!
That's absolutely gorgeous!
This looks so cool ! Well done, it's an amazing job that you've done here !
Liked how the safety measures observed were pointed out
Really love that you put the tool list and links in description, its beyond helpful. Thanks!
You’re welcome!
I've watched this video at least 20 times because the techniques are so dang helpful.
I especially appreciate the explanation and use of the epoxies for creating sturdier layering.
That's wonderful! We're so glad you find it helpful!
The finished product is awesome.
That was a amazing build :). Thank you Brit for explaining each step nicely and clearly.
You’re welcome!
Bro that full costume is insane!!!
That looks incredible!
That is amazing. Simply stunning.
This is absolutely insane in the bet way possible! Keep up the good work!!

I love the effect on the visor ,great video-keep up the good work.
I'm excited. nice work. I especially like the persistent approach when grinding
You sure had a great knowledge and command of all the materials and sprays needed to make the helmet!! Great work!!
Although I'm 3 years late to this party, I really enjoyed the video and techniques shown here.
That's so cool. Good for you guys!
Straight up impressive.
This was an awesome make! You guys continue to put out great videos and think of different techniques I would never have thought of, haha. Putting tint in the XTC was genius!

Wow you have some amazing skills, if it had been me id have thrown ou the damaged part yet you were able to perfectly work it back in even though it was damaged and oddly shaped... very impressive.
Congratulations, it was too beautiful! Nice job!
Wow that looks amazing
That is superb, one of the best cosplay helmets I’ve ever seen.
Absolutely immaculate
Loved the step by step video. Learned a lot, subscribed!
This is amazing! over the summer, I'm going to be working on a complete gundam costume for myself, so all of your videos have been a massive help for preparation!
Oh wow, a Gundam costume sounds super fun! Good luck!
Such a Fantastic video, I hope you never take it down, that way it can help other people as much as it has helped me.
After seven months of studying and applying the techniques in this video to armor crafting, I'm now helping people with their armor and the money I'm making has transformed my life! I even received a promotion at my career job where I'm the majordomo for 3d printing and finishing prototypes.
That's fantastic! We're so glad you found our content helpful!
This was really enjoyable to watch! Great work
