Thrifting for Vintage Deals at This New Estate Sale Paradise!

- Add a new state to our list! We're headed from our New York vintage jewelry buy to the Portland Rose City Vintage Market, and our first stop is at two estate sales just down the street in Glen Rock, New Jersey! Will the Garden State prove fertile or futile in our quest to find good antiques and vintage our collectors want?
This seems to be a 1950s-60s neighborhood, and we're definitely seeing vintage at the first estate sale house! No one knows I'm here, so I hope to quietly find some good bargains without tipping my hat that I know a few things. A Scottish scarf, some white metal patio furniture, a Jarts game and a gathering of other fun items at this well-organized sale are offered at prices we just can't leave behind!
Down the block, a smaller house tight with objects reflects a different estate sale strategy, where items are not priced unless over $100, and the rest is set at the cashier. Will our strategy of piling a Harlequin 1930s casserole dish high with other vintage goods get us a cheap lump sum price? When we add a scarce Fenton black rose vase and obscure Studebaker emblems to the mix, we know we're onto something here, especially when the bill is just $60!
Both homes and both styles of conducting an estate sale have their merits, and we head out on our 3000 mile drive feeling excited to take these goodies from East to West for our collectors! Which sale was the most profitable? You'll have to watch until the hippos come home to find out!

I love looking at all this stuff reminds me of better times my childhood my grandmother's house and aunts and uncles all the old people live in my neighborhood Who Loved Me. Wish I could afford to buy the house intact and then take vacations to a better place sometime lol PS if it smelled like coffee cigarettes and antiques I would be in heaven😃
George avoids screwbacks; I run off with them if they're for me and well-made. (no holes) People complain that they hurt, which isn't true. Clips hurt! WIngbacks are awesome, but try finding any. 30:13 Those magnfiers sell like hotcakes to crafters. (y'all who need reading glasses to see in close.) Speaking of hippos, I bought a purple-painted bronze one at an estate sale once; he's my cousin's wedding present. :-)
Thank you George, nice time watching.
The Harliquin bowl was your best snag l A real beauty ❤
I LOVE those blue candle sticks. What a nice Blue…❤
The best!
I was a young mom in the 60 70s and never had furniture with all of the patterns on them some of us didn’t appreciate the busy looking sofas etc.
Love the nail art! A lady made them in her own home here, near Reading, and they were distributed to shops here in the East! I have a lovely nail art clock she made!
Looks like your Aunt Joan's house. It's always fun to look at other people's homes at an estate sale. You can find lots of unusual things that don't get made anymore. I hope you find good things on your summer journey. ❤❤❤❤😮❤❤❤❤
Nice estate sales George. Those had far more interesting items than the ones I’ve been to lately. BTW…the head stopper you got for $9 is Italian not German. It’s ANRI, which is still in business. I would estimate that your stopper was made in the 1930s. By the 1950s, the figures were more blocky looking, by the 60s, the heads were plastic. Thanks for taking us along.
The only problem with no prices on things is they can charge what they want and I have seen people walk out after they get up to the register without their stuff. Which in turn means everything they might have wanted is not sitting on the table for someone else to put back into stock somewhere. A hassle for sure. Also, when there are no prices I just tend to LOOK only. Have a great day and safe travels
I love vintage toys! Thanks George. Safe travels
Oh boy....my parent's house that I now own, has so many similar things! They were married in 1957 and I think they kept a lot of 70s type things. Also my Dad has his antiques, which I don't know much about. Anyway, another fun video George. Thanks!!!
That family had quite a variety of collections. That in its self is interesting.
That sale looked like a great place to walk down memory lane. Some times those memories end up making things a bit crowded, if you know what I mean ! 🙃😃
Million-dollar idea buy intact preserve it intact rental as Airbnb nostalgic Airbnb🎉🎉 PS who doesn't want to spend the night at Grandma's house😃
Great idea!!🎉
Hi George! Love your videos! Why not take a photo of the things you are interested in and then go show the pics to the salesperson to get a price...also bring your own basket for the smalls. Love ya George!!!
NJ gets a bad wrap, but I've met some of the nicest people there. I am a Floridian by birth but lived in Jersey City for about 15 years (until recently). Great area, great arts community, great history, great folks there.
Flock of seagulls! 😉 I find your commentaries fascinating and helpful. Thank you. I need to move my parents’ and grandparents’ treasures and am trying to strategize …
That was a lot of fun!
For me too
Great sales. I enjoyed the vintage stuff.
Actually, nice mix of things. Looks like a fun time. 😊
Hi George! The coin changer could be from a retired bus driver. I worked for transit for 20 years, my grandfather for 40 years, I have his antique coin changers. They are getting harder to find. ❤
That was my first thought as well
@@BrabronacusI loaned them to the company I worked for as they have an area where they display years of memorabilia from the growth of the company. They had no coin changers though! My grandfather worked for Metro in Seattle and most bus companies transitioned to fare boxes around the same time so I let them display my grandfather's coin changers. Its better than sitting in a box right? A bit of history to be enjoyed. The earlier one is much heavier and clunky than the later one. The one George found looks to be a younger version, just before they transitioned to fare boxes. Of course it could be from a carnival worker or anyone in a job making change on their feet as well. A neat piece of history. 😁
@@jael6048 Very generous of you to loan them out, definitely much better than them sitting in a box!
Our Good Humor (Ice Cream) lady had the same coin changer back in the 60s.
@@richkroberts One of the fun parts of Summer, lining up for ice cream soaking wet from the swimming pool.
I found your channel not too long ago and love your videos! I've learned so much and it's so much fun to shop with you ☺️ Definitely subscribing 💕
Every time I see stacking stools I
Miss my grandparents’. They had the round ones which are harder to find.
Oh my goodness!! The ice crusher brought back some wonderful memories for me!! My great grandmother had the same one that she used to use then poured Hershey’s syrup out of the can over as a treat for me!! I still love chocolate snowballs to this day!! Thank you for that George!!❤
George, if I wasn't disabled, as I am retired, I would follow you around the country going to sales. Don't mean to sound like a stalker...LOL
Fun video second time around George! Thanks for sharing!
I had several friends in the studebaker club here in Seattle. My friends father had a studebaker dealership in Tacoma back in the day.😊
It amazes me how knowledgeable you are. I hope to be a little like you someday. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.
I have followed you for quite some time. Probably about a year now. I love how knowledge you are.
George, that was amazing, that is so. I love those kind of cells.!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Really enjoyed these two homes. Loved the blue glass and the Fiesta piece, oh my nice find!
4:10 Wow! That house looks like a 1960’s film set.
That furst house was a real time capsule.
I love the Nancy Drew books I would have bought those. Lots of cool stuff
How wonderful it was to recognize just from the thumbnail where you were! My neck of the woods!
The sale with the crazy floor, the tiles are 9" square and made with asbestos. Both my parents and hubby's basement floors were done with it. 1950's era.
Cute change maker !! Remember them from venders at ballgames in the day ⚾
Lovely day !
My fave was the first groovy 70’s house! Loved the conquistador lamps, but love the paintings of conquistadors even more when I’m out at the antique stores. I see conquistadors and Spanish galleons were a thing back then ! ❤Great video George! Thanks for sharing!
That’s one style I haven’t seen up here . Spanish conquistador must not have been popular in Calgary . Interesting …
Fun stuff is good too! 😊
Love your t-shirt, George. Thank you for today adventure ✨️
George, another enjoyable video. I would love to see an estate sale video where space is not a hinderance for you. I am always curious as to what you buy and what you pass on. Your narratives are the best! Thank you for all you do.
ps...
I'd recognize your voice anywhere too.
I can always be guaranteed a fun video when you are out shopping for more goodies to buy. Thanks so much for the work you put in. 👍🏻😊👋🏻
Hi George! I didn't see you lugging any of the metal carts. I know you adore a good bar cart. The second sale was a little more fun to poke around .
I started to watch live Wednesday and crashed about half way in...😢 just could not stay awake. I hope that the sale this weekend is amazing!
Hi there! I did actually get the white one
I grew up in the ‘60’s and ‘70’s in New England. You’re right, we were incredibly creative and crafty. Born of necessity and having little money.
I’m glad these things are still around and someday will be enjoyed again. And of course we had Dansk and a lot of it. Lol. I still have and use the salad bowl I grew up w. Good memories in this video.
Those Nancy Drew books aren’t that valuable. They have the yellow spine so they came out starting in the early ‘60’s. The ones to get at the first ones written in the 30’s. The language was later changed in them so if you can find first editions then you’ll have the real originals.
I have them, 1st w DJ can cost hundreds.
The older ones are what I collect and enjoy reading . Cherry Ames too.
I recently sold a couple Nancy Drew books that I was using as display with a set of bookends. I was surprised at how much the person offered.
I've been looking at ads for houses in MI, and there are some crazy floor patterns in basements of older houses, but I kind of love them.
i do too! They fascinate me
Beautiful blue butterfly!❤
Enjoyed the estate sale goodies. Too bad you couldn’t try on that purple hat. Love the hippo. Safe and happy travels George 😊
I thought the wall piece in the first kitchen might be Ucagco Early Provincial Rooster and Roses. Loved the ink bloater, but didn't catch the price. Another great video, George. Thanks!
15:48 I ❤ that bar cart!
Oh I’d be grabbing that Fisher Price!
New Jersey Good Will jewelry boxes are said to be really good.
I believe it!
So sorry I missed you when you were in Jersey. I almost went to the estate sale in Oldwick, but was busy packing up for Golden Nugget Flea Market in Lambertville. Happy to hear you had nice things to say about Jersey! Hi to Xeno too! You have a friend in Jersey if you come back! Your videos are great ❤ all the tips. Many thanks for all you share!
Thanks for sharing the market value of different states.
There was an artist that came to an art fair near me that did nail art. I always attribute it to to him (her?) I didn't know that it was also a home craft. Outside of that artist, I have ever never seen it elsewhere.
Interesting! I remember it around briefly in the early 1980s.
George! Look up the Canadian tradition of having a "House Hippo". 😊
I have a small pewter collection, now I know 😏. .🌹❤️🌹
Wow George!New York…so close to me here in Ct. I’m on the eastern side…close to RI. So close that it only takes a hop, skip and a jump to get to “downtown”. So close that our “downtown” areas are considered one and share a Chamber of Commerce. 😁😍
The carved figural bottle stoppers are Anri made in Italy not Germany. I've got an extensive collection and $8.00 was a great price.
George missed a few things: those fake eyelashes in the package , some concert posters from local bands? Some buttons and patches . What was that one that said "...Williams". ??
Good evening, George! There was a sword hors d'Oeuvres set, at the start, that I liked. That Sirocco mirror looked like one mom got with S&H Green Stamps, in the 1960s. There was an aluminium stovetop percolator there I would've had to get. I've been looking for a nice one. I liked that pyrography ink blotter. I really like the "Old Country Roses", Royal Albert china. I have a tea set in the pattern. Hmmm...I wish they had collected the Hull Green Drip...and had the saucers 🙃 There were some hole saws there I would've had to get. I could use those. If I had space to display it, I'd like to have one of the Jarts sets. I have a complete set of the Nancy Drew books, among a few other sets, and I'm working on completing a set of the Dana girls books. I have a Mae West and a W. C. Fields lamp. That Marx Bros. lamp was a fun one. I liked the Mae West, "Belle of the Nineties", framed piece. The table the blown blue glass was on was really pretty. That was surprising about the wind-up clock being a hard sell. Those are the ones I prefer. Both of those estate sales looked really fun to shop. Thanks for the take-along!
Funny.....I was looking in one of my Mom's old wallets and she had Green stamps in the change compartment!!! I've inherited my parents' home & contents. I grew up here.
@@deborahtambasco5493 Somewhere here, I think there are still some old S & H Green Stamps books that are partially filled. If I could locate them, I'd put them on display.
So fun you were in New Jersey! There’s so good spots for sure. There’s also an old Studebaker showroom building in Asbury Park! I took some photos today I’d be glad to share with you: also when thrifting in Asbury at the Habitat Restore they had quite a bit of Stangl from right here in NJ too . Happy travels! Come back to Jersey soon!
Thank you for teaching us about this items.
The bathrooms 😮
Fun tour!
I ran across Lora Rock small paintings $$$ plus they are beautiful
just had to comment again. i have never seen that nail art!
I hope you bought me the jarts. Lawn darts are the best 🎉🥳
Another great video! Thanks!
My pleasure!
All adhesive on those very old crazy tiles downstairs is asbestos based... & you do have to disclose it when you sell the house.. remediation is extremely expensive..
My parents and grandparents had some of these items!
George while you were in New Jersey I'm close to Philadelphia you should have can contacted Scott from the old curiosity shop. He might have been in New Jersey to he has a 1925 Bungalow in New Jersey I think you guys would get along😊
Jeffery is looking for a bath seat like the chair like that !
Awesome finds
The teens are wearing those lashes these days, really !! And they are serious too 😂
Love the spice set from czechoslovakia i would buy that set!
The pistol-shaped lighter is something you didn’t mention. I have a thing for lighters and tobaccania.
Great video from my home state
Awesome! Hah I’ve always wondered how that saying came into existence: “There’s more than 1 way to skin a cat.” I used to hear it all the time by the Formula1 pundits & commentators who are British. Haven’t heard it in awhile though..
I remember finding it a bit jarring at first like, whoa what’d they say? 😂 But now *I’M* saying it because I can’t remember what I *used* to say! 😅😅 Oh well 🤷🏻♀️
Her hair was done by a flock of seagulls! 🤣🤣🤣
Love the video ❤
I’m in NJ, that was quite a bit away from me! I get a lot of things I sell on eBay at NJ estate sales, I don’t have luck with the NJ garage sales!
The shelves are from the '70's I had some of those exact ones
They know when to price it up
😊😊😊😊😊
I'm surprised you didn't go through the dress patterns.
😊😊😊😊
lovely video, but I bet if it was priced in the second house, you might have taken more stuff out?
❤❤❤❤❤
I really love watching! You have taught me so much! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
My home state unfortunately I don't live there anymore.
Wish you would tell prices can’t always read them
I thought the Jarts were illegal to sell because of safety hazard.
💐
George, do you ever make it to upstate NY?
👍🇨🇦🤗
Was the Hippo yours?
I wish! It was pretty life sized in some weird random spot near Bedminster, NJ.
Ever come across Monax glass ?
Occasionally, I used to see a lot more but people caught onto it
😊😊😊😊😊
