That’s wild to think the old restraints make the roller coaster more unhinged because I thought this year’s ride was absurdly intense and ejector packed!

I 1000% agree with your take. While this is the best move for most people, I definitely agree that the old restraints gave all the elements more character and felt way more unhinged in a way no coaster on the planet could replicate. While all the elements are still strong, Wildcats Revenge is also now my favorite ride in the park.

I think the new restraints are a huge upgrade and I'm so glad they did it. I hated the old ones, even though they made this ride feel downright terrifying. I would ride Candymonium considerably more than Skyrush after it was built because I enjoyed it more. I really wanted to like Skyrush, I found that holding onto the sides of the restraint and pulling up made it better. Plus flexing your legs while the crew was checking them was helpful. I rode it at the end of June though and I think it's still an incredibly intense ride but much more enjoyable. I like the theming upgrades too but I do agree the original logo was better.

The first drop gives an extra pop of ejector in the back rows because the angle of descent briefly straightens out for a few feet just past the end of the catwalk (at about 60 degrees of incline, atop the large "block" directly beneath the rails) . You get a little pop of fortuitous jank as you cross back into the curving section of track following the flatter portion (you can see an abrupt change in the angle of each car as it crosses the flat-to-curved transition), with the back row seeming to cross that spot at about twice the speed of the front.

You can kinda see how that kink works at 15:02, ironically thats the angle displayed when you said you cant figure it out lol
But from what i see after the crest the radius widens going down and then suddenly tightens up again just before it hits its max angle and then it pulls out, someone forgot to hit depump vertices lol

Just finished this, great review! I hope to get out to Hershey soon. On the note of doing re-reviews, do you plan on re-reviewing Lightning Rod anytime soon? I just got to ride it a couple weeks ago and it absolutely blew my mind. I was lucky enough to ride it MANY times from 2016-2019 so I was worried the chain lift would make it less enjoyable. I can genuinely say I had probably my best ride on it with the chain lift. The airtime on the wave turn actually made me feel like I was going to fly out the coaster. It’s one of the only times I’ve ever actually felt terrified on a coaster, lol. The entire experience was a complete shock to me. I’d love to hear your experience!

I'm super skinny, so when I experience the Intamin/Mack lap bars my thighs are smothered and I get no airtime. I honestly prefer RMC restraints or even Intamin OTSRs because even though I have to sacrifice a bit of comfort, it only comes down on one spot so I can still get airtime. Skyrush's restraints, while probably a bit painful, looked like It'd give a crazy experience, and this time last year it was my number one bucket list coaster, but I doubt the experience will deliver anything like it did when it had the old restraints. It's understandable that you rated this coaster lower, as I would have too, to a much greater extent, if I'd ridden both iterations. But I can see why Hershey did what they did, because the old restraints looked terrible for most riders.

My first ride on Skyrush was around 2 weeks ago so I never rode with the old controversial restraints. As of recently Skyrush is my second favorite coaster of all time and the restraints allowed me to get crazy ejector airtime where it truly felt like I was getting tossed out of the seat , for reference im around 185 lbs , 6’1 ft.

  • @zacg_

I had heard horror stories for years about Skyrush until I finally rode is years ago. Generally, if people say a ride is painful or uncomfortable, even if I disagree I can still understand where people are coming from. But on Skyrush I truly did not feel even slightly uncomfortable and was left confused regarding what people were referring to. I know it's somewhat subjective but I just don't relate to the idea that it was uncomfortable.
That said, I do love the new seats Intamin has been using. And since comfort was an issue for a lot of people, I think this was still a good idea. And it's not like you can make Skyrush a weak or modest ride.

I tried so hard to enjoy Skyrush with the old restraints. But my thighs are like tree trunks, so I got the biggest brunt. It felt like a tourniquet around my legs unless I defensively pushed up on the restraint during the whole ride. Not sure when I’ll visit Hershey again, but I would not doubt that my experience would benefit from the new restraints a lot.

Trick I do with every coaster with airtime is to always sit very forward in the seat, where it's higher, and/or thrust up a little when restraints are checked. Then, as pulling out station, slide back into the seat and bam, airtime. I usually leave like 2" gap between thighs. No where near enough to be dangerous. Just dont be stupid with it. On a B&M you can legit scare yourself with how much restraint room you can get away with.

@@CanobieCoaster Something else about Skyrush I noted last weekend is that it is, perhaps ironically, the most efficient coaster in the park at handling riders needing accessibility access. The elevator to the load platform provides disabled riders direct access to the last car, and since the load/offload is on the same side, nobody stares or cares.

I found theses restraints rachet way more then the old restraint did throughout the ride. I did find though that if you sat in one of the middle seats and used the step up thing in the middle of the train to keep your knee up, you could stop the restraints from ratcheting a little bit

I think I understand why you get a kink of airtime. The first burst of airtime you get is similar to any other ride, you get the whip from being pulled down by the rest of the train. I think the 2nd jolt of airtime comes from the ride reaching the max angle of descent very abruptly, and then immediately pulling out. The airtime goes from being "graceful and smooth" due to the crest, to violent due to the abrupt change of angle. Hope this helps!

As for the lateral bracing, velocicoaster's outer banked hill made my body almost ragdoll sideways, so the same seats should still allow me to flop around on skyrush. The new restraints are so much better and actually make it ridable now. The old restraints were triangular shaped and dug into your thighs throughout the entire ride. I have no idea how people can say that they liked the old restraints more. It was actually intolerable, and I would skip riding this coaster altogether just because of how painful of an experience it would be.

To me the new restraints are a considerable downgrade. It is probably still my number one in the park considering how much I liked it before but Candymonium/Wildcat's Revenge are really close and Phantom's is at the top overall. I even find it less comfortable but I probably just didn't pay any mind to comfort in prior seasons due to the rest of the experience. I haven't much else to note since you described the changes accurately in the review. Do you think it's ranking will considerably change in your top 100?

It's hard to say the ride is "objectively better" and "subjectively worse" but it definitely is. Moreover, saying it's "subjectively worse" sounds dramatic, but it's not like this is now a BAD ride. It's still very fun, and my second favorite in the park. It just went from a chaotic 10/10 experience to a very enjoyable 9/10. I get why Hersheypark did it, and if it extends the ride's life, then I'm glad they did. But I miss the old ride...

Gotta say, I disagree with what you said about the airtime. I got 0 airtime with the old restraints. I will say the ride does feel a bit less insane with the new lap-bars and is now probably the mildest Intamin in the park, but I’ll take less intensity as long as it makes the ride enjoyable.
Also wow! Very surprised to hear you compare Skyrush to i305, in my opinion they’re not even in the same plane of existence. I don’t grey out at any point on Skyrush.

Others were in agony from the restraints. The thin lap bar concentrated the ride's forces to one specific point in your thighs. The ride's high positive Gs would cause the restraints to come down even further as the coaster progressed. Then there was no give. This led to increased discomfort. Some said it felt like Skyrush was trying to rip their legs off.
Now, I will admit the old restraints were uncomfortable. Even staunch Skyrush fans will admit they were super tight. But I personally never thought they crossed the t _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ of pain.

    quite

These are adverbs that can mean related to the quantity and/or quality of how much a thing does or can be depending in your opinion.
