You just saved me SOOO much time, plus a VCR that I love! Just that little section where you had it open, and the tape wouldn't stay loaded BECAUSE THE LIGHT WAS SHINING ON IT. I had mine open for repair, and THOUGHT I'd fixed it, but was frustrated because -- the tape wouldn't stay loaded -- after watching this, went back and turned the lights off, and TA-DA the tape stayed in! Had NO idea that the light could have that affect, and would never have known were it not for your video. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!

Funai (the last producer of VCR's) have finished to produce VCR's in 2015.
Reminded my folks bought a Panasonic Omnivision VCR sometime during the mid/late 90's that was similar to this.
From my experience and what I've gathered from the internet, the best Panasonic vcrs were the ones manufactured in Japan

I've noticed the title changed and I agree with the new title. An 80s VCR would make a lot more sense being your parents' VCR.

the last VCR we owned was very much like this one, not sure if exact same model but looked just like it and same features. i remember when buying it new it did advertise the high speed rewind/fast forward on the box
I will be doing my VCR video soon on my channel, it’s a DVD VHS combo from 2003. I absolutely love you channel.
I just picked up a Panasonic Omnivision PV-8662 in mint condition, cosmetically and in functionality. It also includes VCR+ with the IR window angled at the top of the front panel. It also has the same fast rewind/fast forward. The only drawback is that it doesn’t have the remote - which is not a big deal since I have a universal remote that works with it. The manufacturer label says it’s from 1998. The best thing is that I got it for 10 bucks at the Goodwill just across the street from where I live. It had just gone on the floor according to the GW sales sticker. Great video....thanks!
Cool tho see another one I have this same model and love it for playing old movies there so clear and smooth and I do love the fast rewind and fast forward:)

We have a LG EC960W it's an awesome machine and rewinded exactly like that and it also was a 6 head machine.
i have 2 of these vcrs, one exactly the same as yours and the other is a newer panasonic with the same features, remote and on screen menus, both have never had an issue and still work well to this day👍

A lot of Pal and NTSC Panasonic VCRs had 43 or 60 second rewind back in the day!

I still use vhs in 2021
I have the 2003 model that I bought brand new. It's a fantastic unit, better than any other new VCR of the time.

Hi, from across the pond, we call good will shops 'charity shops' here in the uk, you can get some good bargains usually retro, another chain of shops are cash converters and another is cash generators, these are for profit but you can get a real bargain though slightly more expensive. Love your work.
I've had VCRs with a high-speed rewind feature before. I think one of them was JVC, or maybe it was a Panasonic. I know I had a Sony one with that feature. But I've never seen one that keeps the tape wound around the drum while in high-speed rewind.
It is the history technologies.
I really found it strange to be missing the head of erasing the audio on tape, the first time I see it too. I noticed before you talked in the video, because I am somewhat observant in these electronic things hahaha i love it, good video 10/10

Any info in the Panasonic NV -8500 video cassete recorder?
I had exactly the same one in 2004
Think all or most late-model, center-loading VCRs are of that design. Just the transport plunked on top of a circuit board w/ the power supply on one side & the tuner/processing circuitry on the other. My three Sony's are the same.
At this point in VHS's lifespan most machines had the same Funai mechanisms no matter what brand was on the front.

Why new VCR's don't remove the tape from the head-drum when it rewind or fastforward ?

I remember being 18 and saving for my first very own vcr. It had to have 4 heads, for clear pausing and slow motion nude scenes! and something that just came out extra cable ready channels, over the 99 I think it was. I was so proud of my GoldStar vcr. Lmao it was sony
My dad bought a Panasonic vcr in 97 and it saw +10 years of hard use before the mechanism crapped itself and everything got misaligned. Some years ago we actually repaired it and got it to work for a while, but the heads broke and it went straight into the garbage lol.
Hi thank you for bringing these old gems back. I too want to get back to watching some old VHS types. I do have a question on Rewinding, is it not a good idea to keep rewinding your types in the vcr? And would it do any damage to the vcr or the type? I want to keep them both in great shape for many more years to come. I don't want to anything stupid to these classics that are getting harder to come by. Again Thank you Very much for your Time and support
Tape rewinder‘s came along back in the day when VCRs were expensive to repair and they had rubber rollers inside. Those rubber rollers would wear out just like tires on your car. Most modern VCRs use gears instead of rollers and will last much longer. I wouldn’t worry about using an external rewinder, I would use my VCR to rewind my tapes.
I suspect this might have been a OEM design. I used to have a Sony unit with the same case design and a very similar PCB layout.
I think this was the last model Panasonic made of just a VCR, after they did the DVD/VCR things. I don't really like the combo ones. I have several Omnivisions ranging from 1998-2004 and the 2004 one has extreme rewind like yours does.
I got one of those for $35 on ebay with free shipping. Nice machine.

I don't think anything will operate a ced player but its unlikely anyone watching ceds will greatly enhance their experience with a remote. A laserdisc player on the other hand... I am still trying to get the director's commentary on the Clerks LD to work!
I worked for a large local electronics company from 1983 thru 2005. I was hired to repair VCR's, and Laser Disk players.We would get all the returns from several major electronics stores all over the USA, I kid you not I would repair 50-100 VCR's a week.We were factory authorized for every manf. from A to Z .I had to go to manf. seminars about every 6 months when a new model came out as to keep our warranty authorization.Back then the going rate to do what was called a STOCK REPAIR was between $40 and $90 per unit,depending on the manf. They paid me $18.00 per hour plus 20% of all the repairs, the money back then was crazy GOOD as you can see. But around 2005 when these type of electronics went from costing hundreds of dollars a unit to next to nothing manf. dropped their warranty and put this type of repair industry right out of business.The cost of these products dropped so much that they became throwaway units, so at this cost now manf. did not need service centers any more, they just had the product returned to them cutting out all of those costly warranty repairs because of the price they were being sold for now could not justify a company like I worked at to repair their products any more. So when I watch your videos on all your VCR's my hands have been in every single one that you have shown,I remember every quirk that they all had.
My vhs wont fully eject a tape and the dvd tray keeps closing after opening any idea how to fix?

I use that tv to play wii, ps2 and ps1games via component, also.
This was one of the last vcr's in the world. It has nothing to do with Panasonic... That company in Indonesia (Shintom if I'm right) made almost all vcr's that time. Check JVC, LG, Samsung from that period... all from the same factory, all the same menu (mostly) etc.

Yes, I've been to that one as well as Saugus & West Roxbury. And a few years ago, the one in Framingham (when I stopped out there).
Where is the scart connector? Don't you use scart because you use NTSC? All newer PAL VCR's i have seen have scart.
NTSC regions don't have scart, I've never seen anything with scart in person here.
SCART was originally a legal obligation for french receivers, so European VHS have this connector but in North America they only use RCA connectors (or S-Video).
Try to find a JVC HR-S10U.

+databits Sorry about all that, some guy was criticizing Mr. Magnetoscope all because of him requesting a VCR video. I'm actually friends with Mr. Magnetoscope so that's why I was a little bit part of the argument. Also, keep up the good work, these videos are really good!

Damn...this VCR is built cheap, nowhere as solid as earlier models. I bought my Grundig VCR in the late 90s and paid 800,- € for it - just some months later everybody wanted DVD and prices (and quality) of the VCRs plummeted to 200-300,- €.
