As the owner of multiple trucks , this makes me cringe! An old man once told me as we were talking about multiple rigs, he said “ son let me tell you something about a driver. A driver don’t want nothing, but the driver don’t want you to have nothing either”. God it’s so true, all this guy had to do was pull forward at the very beginning, reset up the turn and NOT tear the bumper up on the truck and probably not even tear up the grass.
I agree 47 seconds into the video any experienced driver "oversize load or even just a tractor trailer driver" can see he has a ton more room to play with just in to position of the trailer. It was nice of the driver to offer the company to pay for his mistakes. Not saying the guy should lose his job but bonuses or the repairs of the bump and repairs to 2 yards would be on him to fix. I mean come on a simple pull up and slide over 3 feet to the driver side and he could've avoided any damage at all.
Tough spot. Being there was no traffic he should have worked at it longer. Trying to get back under it sooner he would have had trouble with the mail box area.
Ego wise, I think some guys think it's worse to start over than just make what you started work. There was obviously a lot more room to play with. If he's a good employee and this is rare for him I don't think he should have to pay for it, everyone screws up once in a while.
Not trying to be an armchair quarterback, but, i would have just did a pull up and started over on the set up, or dropped the trailer right there and squared up. I'm not a truck driver, though I have trailer experience, it seems to he should started his backup turn sooner. That would have put him farther away from the corner he dug into.
He should have hugged the Sign & Fire Hydrant as close as Possible when backing out. Risking A LOT of Damage to Property and a Truck. A lot of different things could have been done such as Flip that 4th Axle Up, to to make that Trailer 5’ Shorter and then Flip it Down, with the Excavator Boom when on the Road. Given how small that Excavator is (Cat 326F), I don’t know why he even has that 4th Rear Trailer Axle Down for that Small of a Load anyways. Either way I don’t believe he should have Risked Damaging Private Property without Permission for that Load. I do Respect the Offer to Fix the Yard and Make it Right, cause he HAD To. He almost had to Call a Rotator Wrecker to get him out of that Mess. It was going to Cost a Few Thousand Dollars Regardless whether it was a Fixed Yard or a Wrecker. Not Much Profit Left in that Load, by the Time it’s All Said and Done.
