The SS 440 was an awesome looking machine...just wonder what the HP was ?...I know the SRX's were super fast and I believe the 77-78's were close to 100 hp...great work love seeing these older sleds get restored and used...from 73 to mid 80's was my best days in the snowmobiling world I ran Ski Doo's like the 74 440 F/A... 77 340 RV...79 Blizzard 7500 and 80 SS Citation but always had respect for the Yamahas just wasn't any dealers close to me just Ski Doo other than that I would have owned a 77 or 78 SRX back then...if I can find one now in mint to reasonable condition as I'm not much of a gear head so restoring for me is not an option.
SS440 had 50HP per the old Yammy literature. The first year is the best looking for sure, but I believe there were issues when the released and were getting beat by the slightly less powerful and older 440 Exciters.
I need help with a very rough ‘85 XL-5 540 I recently picked up (leaf springs) The steering is completely locked on it, where should I look first or take apart? I’m thinking the spindles are rusted from sitting for decades. Cheers from Wisconsin! 🍻
@@garagenerd1951 I ended up needing to knock them free and use all my strength to begin rotating the skis with the tie rods disconnected back and forth until they started dropping down. Finally got them free and out of the sled but screwed up threads on one of the spindles from pounding on it with a hammer. Next is getting a dye on that to save the threads.
Those were pretty fast sleds in their day. Considering they were only 440’s. Love your sleds.
always loved the 80 best looking, dig yer content
Just came across your channel, you do a Lot of good work, giving the old machines some love! Really good stuff, thanks! 👍
Thanks for watching. There's quite a few sleds on the channel. Watch em all!

SS440 was/is a very cool sled. A Buddy of mine had one with a pipe on it. Sounded mean. - Hoss
I had a 80 just like that. 50mph tops. reliable sled though.
Stock 80s needed the Yamaha recall which was a skid and track swap
ahh. that explains it most likely.@@garagenerd1951

How do you lift sleds on that shelf?
I have a chain hoist hung off a steal beam that runs across my garage.
