Floor is one of the best we have and will go down up there with Ann Wilson as one of the GOATs. I'm not crazy about this cover, though. Floor sings it great no doubt, but it works better as a rock ballad than a piano torch song. I don't think Ann's original would have been as huge as it was without the drop and power chords in the chorus. That explosion is what made people take notice of the song when it was first released-- it's the first thing anyone remembers about the song, the huge drums and bombast. I think the best ballads are the ones like this that come from hard rock bands, so when you strip the rock part away it's way too Celine Dion-ish (also a great singer technically, but Floor and Wilson both run laps around her because they are rock singers first and foremost and have superior phrasing.

Im not a musician, but this is what I have come to think when trying to understand what is so special in Floors voice. Often people just mention "range" - but range is just an ability to hit notes no matter the quality or tone one is able to do it. There are a ton of singers with 4-5 octave ranges and many beyond that, but they sound very breathy and weak whistles at the extremes and dont have the dynamic ability to change the color or tone of their voice. Floor on the other hand can seemingly combine any tone to any note and yet add color with vocal effects. There is warmth and depth in her voice no matter what part of her range she is using. Dont know if its practice or natural talent - or even just something her sheer size enables as deeper warmer resonanse mixed in her high notes.

Her voice is her instrument, I say that because in my 57 years of being a 'music freak' I was only really interested in instrumentalists. When a top guitarist plays a solo for example, he is not just hitting the notes in the right places, but rather painting a picture of what he feels, and creating a sonic image of the emotion of the piece. That is exactly what Floor (and other singers) of her professionalism and quality do, I have found (at last) a singer who delivers ALL the qualities of being a musician.

I would say that its not the range. While yes here range is quite wide. There is singers that does as wide of a range.
I would say the diffrance is that she have multiple set of "voices" in the same range. And she can swich between them effort less.
En some songs she does multiple vocies in the same range, almost like a duet.
Say if a female and a male vocalist do the same octave, they still sounds different. But floor can do the same octave, in 5 different ways.. if not more. There is ways to moderate the voice so its sounds higher or lower than the octave its actually in. Floor does that a lot. (not so much in this specific song)

Ann Wilson was hard rock vs. metal but she's the only one I've ever heard that matches Floor. "Barracuda" is probably Heart's biggest hit but they've got probably 30 songs you've heard but didn't realize was them. There is a live cover of "Unchained Melody" by Ann and Heart from their prime back in the 80s that is one of the most incredible vocal performances I've heard live, male or female. Heart was closer to Led Zeppelin type heavy/acoustic hard rock than metal, but they've had several songs that crossed the metal barrier and she just tears into them. As good as Floor is on this performance I don't think anyone can touch Ann's studio version with Heart.

This is probably my favorite of Floor's covid-time home videos. She's done this song a couple of times before, but this version is the most mature of them. The grand piano is provided by her long time friend and collaborator SIR Joost van den Broek (After Forever, Ayreon). ⛄👍

In her prime Ann matches and surpasses Floor, and that's not a dis' to Floor because I can't think of any heavy rock singers that come close to Ann. Technically her voice had incredible power, but it was more than just that. Ann's phrasing and unique sound were one of a kind. The ad-libbed scream Ann does in this song which Floor emulates is a great example what makes Ann so great. At 73 Ann just had a #1 Active Rock hit duet with Disturbed, and Floor is the only current singer I can picture still being able to pull off something like that at an advanced age. Floor is incredible, I think she's her generation's Ann.

When Heart was looking for new songs for the 80's crowd, The i-Ten version of the song was modified slightly by Kelly/Steinberg to reflect a female singer. Heart released the song in 1987.

("Alone" is a song composed by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly, who recorded it under the name i-Ten on their 1983 album Taking a Cold Look.) So in fact this is a cover of a cover... Floor is up there with Ann Wilson as one of the best female hard rock singers in history. She does a great job with this track but I don't think anyone will ever be able to top Ann Wilson's studio original. For one thing she originated the wail/scream that Floor emulates, and try as she might Floor can't emulate the longing in Ann's original vocals. Also, this song is a great rock ballad but I'm not as fond of it as a ballad-ballad like Floor makes it. Part of what made the original great is that drop where it goes from subdued to hard in one beat; that is what hooked everyone when the Heart version was first released, and without that it's still ok but it's less interesting (in my opinion of course). I love Floor, but I just think some songs are impossible to top.
