One thing I have to say is that those guys have some major balls to be able to put their katas on the internet so they can be criticized, knowing that the trolls might have a field day. I've been doing forms for over 30 years, and I don't want to go through that. Major respect to all of those guys. All of you have guts!
Loved this one. I really like this series! Plus my respects to people who gets their Katas analyzed because it really shows the desire of self improvement! Cheers!
We are not allowed to show anything we do online, totally forbidden. Not sure exactly why but we follow the rules. I think this a great concept and as others have said even if not their Kata what you are saying applies. I love the fact i can get to read other peoples comments that mirror my thinking, and sometimes it is in the subconscious part of my thinking, but it is still there, as a light is going off in my mind as I am reading. My brain injury slows my learning down a lot, ruins my flow and rhythm as I need to teach my limbs to work again, I cant think of a better way than Kata for that.
What’s really interesting is that while my kata wasn’t being evaluated, everything you said applies to my katas I.e. relaxation, pauses, making the kata look like a real fight, etc. This is a great series! Thank you for taking the time to share your wisdom, knowledge, and experience with all of us! 🙏🥋
the difference between different styles is crazy. that second kata was tekki shodan in shotokan karate. my style and is very different from the one i know same with tekki nidan.
I really like how so many of your videos and your advice applies to me even though I do Taekwondo. I actually consider TKD a karate style but I'm scared that if I say that too much I'll offend people.
Thank you for the way you explain more fully what my teacher says. I’m not exactly what or how you’re doing it differently, but both of these kata critic videos have made something click that I know has been explained in class. Thank you for starting this series.
It is hard to find the balance in technique, nor the less trying to explain it. Well done again Jesse. Doing the kata's slow and studding the intent is always helpful in improving your performance.
Jesse Sensei that was an awesome video! Could you please make a video regarding the eye contact during performing katas ? Coz it had been a great topic of debate in our dojo and we still don't have a clear understanding on it.
@@zanewilson2617 I'd consider that a mistake. Why would you look at somebody else during a fight? Our sensei tells us to look at to the opponent (who is standing where we are hitting, of course). This even includes turning a bit, looking, and then starting a technique that is aimed at an opponent that was standing behind us, because if this were a real fight, we couldn't randomly turn and hit somebody behind us. We need to look at the situation first, then turn fully to hit our opponent. Can't do any of that if we are looking at the judges.
sensei, that helped a lot, now I know how to improve my kata, but I still have a question. In some places they mentioned that their shoulders should be down all the time during kata, and I didn't find the explanation for that. could you tell me? and maybe talk a little more about these little details of performing a kata. thanks for the channel and attention
Hi, I am not Jesse sensei, but I've been taught that it's because of relaxation of body. You have to use too much muscles to keep shoulders up and it slows you down. Just what I've been taught.
I have a question: if someone were to send you a video of their sparring match, would you be willing to do a critique for them? I'm looking to improve my footwork, and I do have senpai and sensei who I can ask for feedback, but they're not always available and plus, I live in a really small area in Southern Illinois (we are actually referred to as the armpit of the United States.) I respect and valye their input, but getting some feedback from someone who doesn't know me and has worked eith world-class practitioners would be just as valuable to me.
Dear sensei Jesse . Im wondering if You have though about creating your own Kata with your personal style. Or if maybe any of the karate comunity have created his own Kata. It' sure would be interting to watch

When the gentleman was performing Seipai from Goju-ryu, Look at the judges. I don't care how you feel about what you are watching, sitting there the way the three women are is disrespectful and it looks like you are not giving it your full attentijon to the judging. When you are a judge, you should sit like you are at attention, even though you are sitting. And give everyone the respect thy deserve for performing.

To me a kata is (and this is my personal opinion) is a theoretical fight because with me a kata isn’t a flashy show of how good you are at karate and my students don’t really understand this (I teach a kids class 8-10yr olds) but a kata is show is to show what you can do in a fight or self defence situations you have a kind violent aspect to you’re kata but you don’t to much violence or that whould be the opposite of the purpose of karate ‘self defence’ but in a fight you kind of to improvise because a person who fighting you isn’t going let you perform long winded fancy moves you want to finish a fight as fast as you can and you want to get out of a self defence situation as fast as you can but this just my personal opinion
