I practice Goju Ryu karate and am currently working on my seiuchin. Might just be a difference in styles but i was taught for the opening moves to not turn my head forward until the hands come back down in the opening 3 sequences. Another thing which we're taught is what's called the "Goju exchange" when stepping straight back keep your hips facing forward until the last possible moment then snap into the horse stance forcing your hips to contract which adds power. Jesse san. The second kata where you say to "connect" lower and upper body. That is Matsubayashi Ryu. With the first Kata, Unsu, executed by an Orange Belt, I would've deterred him from doing Kata that is way far superior than his level of knowledge and understanding. Why?? @@KARATEbyJesse I'm currently contemplating different forms of power generation. So far I am aware of 4. 1. Kenetic linking from force exerted on the ground. (For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction, power you push down into the larger mass of the Earth is translated back into the body. Sort of pushing with the legs into strikes) 2. Elastic tension on connective tissue ( using tension of the body and release of tension) 3. Force of gravity with strike (where the weight of the body is added to form.) 4. Wow Respect to all. I think you can differentiate if you are in competition or traditional Karate. I am about 14 to 16 years in competition and only this is for me sport and fun. I am not a expert as athlete. But over the years I only in competition in Kata and Kumite is only in Bunkai or fun. But you need to know that you absolutely need Khion , Stand and your Timing. Dear Jesse I dont know if you was in Kata competition as pro athlete but know exactly the right basics about a good Kata!!!! I hope you can understand all, because my English is not so well. Grammar
pan peter Absolutely! I took a class in college for a semester and completely loved it. I wasn’t consistent in remembering my Kata because I had move into a small town. But I saw people like Tatsuya Naka and Sing Li. Very dangerously smooth in their Kata. The more they practice, the more it can be used for self defense. I personally like Song Li because she move like water and her targets are always accurate. I seriously want to invest in Kata, hopefully I meet more people who are interested in practicing with me. Thanks for your input and feedback.
8:55 That take is very interesting. I learned from Sensei Richard Amos that upper body and lower body should move as one entity, connected through the core, which you also mentioned. As of recently I'm training at a university Karate club and I have a little argument with my senpai who trains us. She learned to start a technique after starting the legs. You said you start it even before the legs. Doesn't this go against the principle of moving everything together, as you said afterwards?
Enpi is another one that is deceptively easy, but incredibly nuanced. And most karateka don't do it correctly. In most styles it's an introductory level black belt kata. In my opinion of the typical sentei (selection kata) typically Bassai Dai, Enpi, Kwanku and Jion, Enpi is the hardest one of those four. Enpi contains movements which are very unnatural. It's a Shorin form, but most students perform it like it's a Shorei form.
That’s very interesting, I train shotokan and (in my club) generally we treat those kata (bassai dai, jion, enpi and kanku dai) as prerequisites to shodan. Although only bassai dai is required for our shodan grading, my senseis prefer for us to know all four before grading for shodan. It’s cool to here about the shorin version.
@@CwGuitar01 It varies from dojo to dojo. Keep in mind, all Shotokan kata are derived from Shorin Ryu and Shorei Ryu. The Heian katas, Bassai, Kwanku, Enpi and Gankaku come from Shorin Ryu. Hangetsu, Jion, Jitte, and the Tekki kata come from Shorei Ryu. In my dojo, my sensei taught us the sentei kata he felt suited us best. We learned it at brown belt and had to do it for our Shodan exam. I did Bassai Dai for my Shodan test. For Nidan, I had to demonstrate Enpi, Kwanku and Jion and show an improvement in my execution of Bassai Dai.
Great idea sir. Im looking to begin practicing. What advice could you give me on things i should practice to ensure that my very first kata is on point? I want to be sure i dont create any bad habits from the get go. Maybe youve already addressed this in a video. I have been practicing mixed martial arts for 15 years, but iv never been part of a school and i consider myself a bare bones beginner. I have gained massive respect for this art, i may have already accumulated bad habits from my own practice. My work schedule prevents me from being part of a class in my local area and from your videos that iv seen okinawan karate is where i would like to start. And advice would be greatly appreciated. 🙏😊 thank you for your time and effort sir
I haven't done a proper Kata in 18 years since i stopped training due to being young and wanting to work, and falling behind on my own training as a 2nd Dan Black belt due to spending more time teaching and not learnin or improving my own skills,, After discovering your videos "and binge watching them!" i'm itching to give it a go again, maybe ill film you my first Kata in 18 years, maybe kusanku if i can remember it! see how out of shape i am hahaha
I feel like seiyunchin will be pretty common from the goju ryu practitioners. I don’t want to say its a “hard” kata, but if you mess up early its very hard to execute the rest properly (in my experience)

Jesse Sensei- I have a link, where can I send it? It's probably not a kata you're familiar with, but I would love some feedback! It's Shaolin Dragon and it comes from Shaolin Kempo
Sensei, few days ago you mentioned that it is useful to visualize oneself doing kata, and it can improve the actual execution. My question is how you visualize? How much to zoom in to details, and how much to zoom out to see the whole body? Visualize "in first person" or "third person"? Now having written this question I guess that the proper answer is "do it all, just not at the same time:P"...
Wow Very nice of you to help with people’s techniques ! Thank you so much for your time you put into these. It’s very appreciated. So if I were to make a video just send it right here in these comments correct ?

I am about 14 to 16 years in competition and only this is for me sport and fun.
I am not a expert as athlete. But over the years I only in competition in Kata and Kumite is only in Bunkai or fun.
But you need to know that you absolutely need Khion , Stand and your Timing.
Dear Jesse I dont know if you was in Kata competition as pro athlete but know exactly the right basics about a good Kata!!!!
I hope you can understand all, because my English is not so well. Grammar
This was such a great idea, very educational. Ty for continuing to share your knowledge and wisdom sensei
Happy to hear you enjoyed it! Will do 😄👍
Have you done a video about basic stances and transitioning from 1 stance to the next?
If i send you another seienchin kata you will plase it in a video?
Thanks Jesse. I appreciate your constructive feedback on my Chinto Kata. Happy Training!
Thanks for sending in your inspiring performance Sensei Jason! 👍 Your students must be proud 🙏 Keep up the heat! 🔥💪☺️
@@KARATEbyJesse you bet! Keep posting your great videos. They have been an inspiration to my training. :)
Very interesting episonde!! More please!! Congrats
Stay tuned for the next episode 😎
I’m a white belt with a long way to go! I need a critic like Jesse to improve my kata. Good video!
pan peter thanks for the feedback
pan peter Absolutely!
It is a great help to all karateka's i have gained my flexibility now by your videos which i didn't gained till black1dan. Thankyou so much sensei osu
Really like the idea of this. Perhaps let us see the full kata in full at first then break it down? I like to see new katas and different styles.
Jesse how do I send it to you?
Just drop a link in the comment section (like I mention in the video)
Loovee this new series, such a great idea. Thank you very much!! 😀👍🏻
For each example, I learned something. Thanks from Texas.
Many ways to skin a cat
Well done Jesse, you made many excellent point's in this video.
Thank you! 😄
Daniel Reid interesting stuff. I’m unfamiliar with Kwanku though. Is it from your style?
Really enjoyed this. I'm looking forward to the next episode. Continued success. 👍👍
Much appreciated🌟
For me my kata what I do is chatanyarakushanku and seisan
Sensei how can I send my Kata video to u for checking?
I’m honestly considering sending in a video of me doing Chinto 🙈😂
will there still be new episodes?
As someone who practices boxing and Muay thai. I find kata to be fascinating. To me even someone amateurish in their form looks super cool.lol
Very good idea to send you a video and listen to your comments, hi from Germany jcs
Another good idea for some videos is we could send you videos of our karate or martial arts styled workouts and YOU try them out! 💪👊
Fun idea ☺️👍
@@KARATEbyJesse and I work as a gym fitness instructor as well as martial arts so you'd be in safe hands 😂
Great idea, loved your comments and advise :)
Fantastic! Thanks for watching 😄
Where can I send my kata vídeo?
I feel like seiyunchin will be pretty common from the goju ryu practitioners. I don’t want to say its a “hard” kata, but if you mess up early its very hard to execute the rest properly (in my experience)
i think the last kata was in karate kid 3 in the tournament
Yeah it looks familiar
This is so awesome Jesse! Now I just need to find someone who do the same with tai-chi forms...
Thanks! Same martial arts principles apply under the surface 👍
Yes, I have learned alot about tai-chi by watching your videos :) I have a book about Tai-chi written by a man who are also a master of karate :)
That’s awesome! PS. If you do Tai Chi fast it becomes old-school Okinawan Karate 😎👍
@@KARATEbyJesse that really make sense!
Superb explanation oss
this is nice. Made me really think about the things i need to improve on.
4:05 Jesse was born knowing Japanese then he learned his native language before English
Hi i am ur subscriber and A brown belt in shitoryu karate can i send you my video of kata. Would you help me out in checking the mistakes and making the kata crisp and perfectt
Of course buddy
I love learning from you, Jesse-san, even though I didn't send any kata (maybe one day, who knows...). Great video! ❤
Main question is.... that only for empty handed katas or can it be with both empty handed and weapons?
Well done jesse thats actually good content. Can you please do the same thing for kumite pleasee.I also want to know what you should do when you are cornered while playing kumite. How to get out from that position cause I personally panic when im cornered and dont know what to do and I try to move when my opponent does a kyakuzuki and gets a point.
I really enjoyed this. What a fantastic idea.
Thank you!!
Excelentes críticas, muy constructivas. Los comentarios de la cámara con movimiento, y el ruido al tirar el "bo" jajjajaj, no tienen precio 😂😂😂!!!
Muchas gracias 😄
Jesse Sensei- I have a link, where can I send it? It's probably not a kata you're familiar with, but I would love some feedback! It's Shaolin Dragon and it comes from Shaolin Kempo
Here is the link. ua-cam.com/video/0LdbMg3-hBg/v-deo.html I perform from 5.07 onward
How can we submit our katas
Sensei, few days ago you mentioned that it is useful to visualize oneself doing kata, and it can improve the actual execution.
My question is how you visualize? How much to zoom in to details, and how much to zoom out to see the whole body? Visualize "in first person" or "third person"? Now having written this question I guess that the proper answer is "do it all, just not at the same time:P"...
Both approaches (1st vs 3rd) person work, it depends on your personal preference.
Love the episode.
This was the first video what i've watched from you. It was very cool and helpful. I subcribed your channel. I look forward more videos like that.😀
In the future, I may send a video of one of my kata. I truly want to improve as a practitioner and an instructor. Your feedback would be welcome.
Wow Very nice of you to help with people’s techniques ! Thank you so much for your time you put into these. It’s very appreciated.
So if I were to make a video just send it right here in these comments correct ?
Thanks! You got it 😄👍
This is so cool! I would love to send a video of one of my katas (they are all on my channel currently), but I have improved since then and want to wait till I have a more recent video🤣
Is that a Tang soo do midnight blue belt?
Would you critic an open style kata?
Sensei, can i send a kata to you ?
Please guide me how to make it better
Sure just provide the link to your kata
What style of karate do you study? i'm wondering for a while..
Not judging but I am curious why a dojo would teach Unsu to a junior belt. Unless his dojos orange is where mine has a brown level. Keep it up though. In time you'll look terrific.
