Shadow the Hedgehog (2005) has been bashed and beaten for how much it fumbles the bag, but did you know a solution lies within the game itself? For the small price of 100%ing the game, you can unlock Expert Mode, transforming it into a linear adventure where all of the stages have been streamlined.
Thankfully, we live in the modern day were a save file can be downloaded, allowing you to get straight to Expert Mode right away, which can be found here (thanks AsianMan2001, I hope you're succeeding wherever you are):

I've seen lots of comments about the Shadow Reloaded mod, so I'd figure i'd address it.
Reloaded is awesome, and I mention it in the video with a link in the description. However, it transforms Expert Mode into an acutal Expert mode where the levels are more challenging. So i don't think it completly replaces the vanilla game's expert mode, as the levels are more in line with their regular counterparts,. I do NOT recommend jumping straight into Reloaded Expert Mode.
So play both!
I thought the title said "mod" at first so I just thought this was gonna be a Reloaded video haha. Reloaded itself makes the base game's missions much more bearable so if one wants to play the base game I'd just recommend getting that. I also really like the melee weapon improvements they've done/

I wouldn't say so. Having been around UA-cam since it's inception, I've seen many different takes on this game from many different creators. These are the critiques I've seen and remember the most. Hence why I say "common" discourse and not "The" discourse

It’s The Year of Shadow, they’re about to release a game dedicated to the history of Shadow, this seems like the perfect time to put this game on modern hardware, doesn’t it?
Well this game fucking sucks so I kinda understand why they wouldn't want to rerelease it
I believe this game and Heroes were made on an engine SEGA no longer holds the license for. They'd have to pay out the arse just to port these games.
Shadow is my favourite Sonic game as is, because like CD it focuses on exploration, so there is no need to fix it with a linear extra mode.
Knuckles and Rouge stages are also the best part of Adventure 2
Ok dude good for you but exploration is only really exploration if it’s optional to some degree when there is no main path it’s just searching for something which in a sonic stage which is huge to account for the characters high speed then it stops being fun
Plus if your just here to explore why would you play a game about speed. 🤷🏿♂️ like what you like I just disagree
Love to see appreciation for the treasure hunting stages in SA2. I replay those almost more often than I relay the speed stages, they’re so fun once you’ve gotten familiar with the level design.
Call me insane but I have completed Expert mode many times and unlocked it LEGALLY many times too. So, no 100% save file for me. Yes, I am THAT patient. But overall, yes. Expert mode is the best mode to experience Shadow the hedgehog fully. I still play it sometimes to this day.

8:07 I totally agree with this and I really respect people that are able encourage someone to play a game "wrong" as long as they still have fun (which is very rare nowadays)
It’s nice seeing this game get some appreciation, even if just the expert mode.
Honestly I’ve always liked the controls, it could be tweaked but it works great for the most part.
And yeah the mission structure gets in the way, but the different objectives CAN be meaningful in how they change the level- just not always. And while there are too many “kill all the enemy” levels, I think so long as you like exploring levels that can still be pretty fun. (Save for about two particularly horrible instances of this mission type, which everyone recognizes.)
And yeah the story is dumb, but cutscenes are skippable and there isn’t a single cutscene that isn’t entertaining, even if ironically.
The game’s got some great levels, music, aesthetics… it does a lot right. So it’s nice seeing people appreciate expert mode like this- it doesn’t just make the game good, it brings out the already existing good qualities.

Wow, this review sounds so damn similar to the way I was talking about Expert Mode to a buddy at work on Saturday. Like I even spoke about the bad 4 stages, and how I beat them. That's awesome!
i think reloaded fixes the entire game and makes even all the normal story levels fun to play. shadow reloaded is one of my favorite sonic games of all time
I may love the base game as is (well, most of it, anyway), but Expert Mode really IS just the best way to experience those levels ngl
If you all wanna play Expert Mode semi-legitimately I'd recommend checking out Shadow Reloaded, a hack of the original GameCube game. Not only does it play better for a number of reasons, but progression is also far simpler. Mission requirements are toned way down and you only need to beat three endings to unlock the Last Story (though if you're a real ShadowHead you will beat all ten endings). Beating the Last Story unlocks Expert Mode, eliminating the need to A Rank everything.
Also, Expert Mode comes with its own special credits sequence, but I won't spoil that for you :)

Sooo wow. Totally didn't know this game had extra dialogue in expert mode. And I also didn't know the keys stay on you after every level. I just assumed they unlocked more weapons or something
Here's the big problem with your video: the game is already good. The expert mode makes it even better, but it was already good.
Yea, i don't get the whole "the game forces you to play the game 10 times" i mean, they're not wrong, but it's not like the game's forcing you do it in a row, you can take breaks and play it again the next day, also about the controls, it's literally just Sonic Heroes control sooo...

3:56 I did that exact thing on the dark mission. I just zoomed part everything and it was so fun, one of the best stages in the game definitely.

The level design in this game is amazing and it is clear that the mission objectives were pasted on top to accommodate for the stupid story structure, thanks Iizuka. However the controls are really poor, Shadow accelerates very fast and it is uncontrollable at high speed. On top of that the spindash barely works, even the rocket accel is a thousand times better because it actually functions as a way of traversal

I'm only 2 A ranks away from unlocking expert mode on my old game cube. Maybe its time to dust that off
