It was awesome to revisit it! This was actually my first time playing the campaign since 2002 and my first time beating it in hard difficulty. The tragedy of Arthas is quite the tale and set the stage for the next 20 years of Warcraft to follow. Thanks for watching!
Congratulations! Just don't call your kid Arthas :P Funny how it's the "Succeeding you, Father" cinematic that precedes the date for you. This mission was always a challenge, even with Arthas's Chaos damage buff the full power of the undead bases is still kinda greater. Outside of the final Hyjal mission and Stratholme, this one must be the most heavily referenced in later WoW media, even though its story content weight vs. combat challenge ratio is so small. Muradin and his speech, Arthas's own words, Mal'ganis's future appearances calling back to this one.
Thank you! Yes that is an interesting coincidence haha - perhaps he will take over the channel one day in the future. I was surprised by how aggressive the Undead was at rebuilding. If I were to play it again I would probably send Arthas in like I did but focus purely on killing acolytes and perhaps the goldmine. My first assault would be for the destruction of the purple base. This is definitely the most lore relevant campaign and mission, at least as far as world level threats are concerned for the WoW universe. This was my first time beating this mission since 2002 and I was surprised by how memorable it all was, from the frostmourne cinematic to Arthas running off into the snow at the end. What a great game!
I'm not sure if you already know this, but during the Frostmourne quest, there are Ghosts who can use Possession to permanently possess your units, take them out or you'll permanently lose a unit to a Ghost

You know, it makes the point that the sword talks to him and drives him mad... but when you think about it, he looks more or less finished already. Nor is he "insane" in the next campaign. He's just more openly sociopathic. The thing is, that's kinda what he was to begin with? I don't really see him as changing all that much. He's just more openly selfish. I dunno. Also, was Terenas always just doomed to die cowering on his throne, scared and confused? I guess he put it off a good while. Also, he sure got that fancy new armour quickly, and who are those people with him that seem to take on all the guards? OH! And congratulations!
Agreed, he seems incredibly with it in the Undead campaign - perhaps more truly evil but not exactly a maniac or dead inside purely voice of Frostmourne Yeah, I'd like to know where that armor came from... and I believe the two guys were later retconned to be the Captain from the campaign, who I guess is split into two characters in Reforged. I always thought the throne room guards did a terrible job preventing this ordeal. Sad that he gets a throne room death scene in both Warcraft 2 and Warcraft 3 where his guards do absolutely nothing. Thank you very much!
@@mickcraftgaming Arthas is loving being a Death Knight in the Undead campaign. He's never had so much fun in his life. He was so miserable as a regular Prince. It's campy, and fun, and he's definitely a jerk, but not wholly out of character. He's like someone who cut footloose after repressing himself his entire life. Frankly, that makes the Captain seem a bit more interesting than Arthas! And he does really not employ the best guards. There really should have been at least two right next to him. I mean... that's the point of guards! Also... where was Uther? Gotta wonder. If I was Uther, I'd be making sure I was in that room if only to make Arthas feel a little uncomfortable out of sheer spite.
@@Canuovea yeah, Arthas is all about it! And very true, you'd think both Uther and Jaina would want to be right there for Arthas' arrival - although, had Jaina already left for Kalimdor at this point? I can't quite recall.
@@mickcraftgaming Hmm. Good question. Jaina probably had left, since she left soon enough to kinda catch up with the Orcs, so she must have done soon after the purging.
You know what, I think this Arthas guy may be a bit evil? /sarcasm Ok, joking aside, WC3 does not portray Arthas as sympathetic guy (not sure about other media). People all around tell him "do not do The Thing Arthas" and he goes "I can't hear you over the screams of all people that are dying because I did The Thing". Just... no, this unhinged prince prick almost went AWOL on second mission against Orcs (and it gets so much worse) and it would probably result in disaster if he would rush if not for Uther. The kid is just thrown into situation waaaay above of his paygrade, had the whole game rigged against him before it even started but unlike "classic" tragic hero he 100% went there. Hell, if game had face animations or cutscenes by the landing on Northrend he would have full "no driver behind the wheel anymore" 1000 mile stare. It make him cool character, just not "a hero". In fact he isn't even agent for majority of his own story, it's basically "daddy said kill orcs, magic Santa said to check out this cool grain that makes zombies, oh we should say hi to necromancers too!" up until Stratholme (and even then, was that really his choice given the circumstances and goading by Mal'Ganis? It's literally like Batman saying "let's rob bank first to prevent Joker from robbing the bank, crime avoided!". The logic kind of checks out, but that is not what people would or should do). He does come o his own waaaaay later tho... until it's "well, time to get periodical heart attacks until I do The Thing part 2" and we're straight up to following orders again. [spoilers] I think Sylvanas fits "tragic hero" more closely.
Oh and just to follow that rant, I think it's pretty cool he gets several models in game. AFAIK there is one with hammer (with whole picking up Frostmourne animation), his sword model and then rider model as a Deathknight (spoiler, I guess?). I remember making a map in editor that basically made him 30 level character all across three models (you switched to another one after gaining level 10 and visiting sort of armorer shop) [edit] Oh, congrats! Just... just try to avoid names like Arthas or Kylo, ok?
Yeah he's kind of just along for the ride through Reign of Chaos - I'm curious to see how he plays out in The Frozen Throne. I remember that campaign being a lot of fun but barely remember the specifics. Agreed about Sylvanas, I really like her in Warcraft 3.
Agreed on that! Having multiple models was really cool to me. Back then I was regularly going to this website "wc3campaigns" looking for new custom models. Now I do that on The Hive Workshop. Thank you! I avoided the names of potential betrayers 😂
@@mickcraftgaming Frozen Throne is AWESOME. Except for Orks, they got screwed... Again! First there was "missing" levels from demo in base game and then RPG campaign that is... fine, I guess.
