Not as bad a game from Wisconsin as some people are saying. First games with new coaches don’t always go like that Colorado game from earlier, and the second half was already a marked improvement over the first outside of the last interception. Run game looks better already than last year!
But that isn't the offense Fickle wants. "Air raid" offense is what he's trying to install. And this was Buffalo... A top flight team, which is what the Badgers want to be, don't struggle with Buffalo.

@@JM-gj7deI see that as a positive. They were not at their best and room to improve on 500 yards of offense and 38 points. If they are this sloppy come big ten season it will be a problem, but they looked better in the 2nd half.
@@CG-vn8iy No, he said in his interview a day before the game that the Wisconsin offence isn't going to be fully or mostly "air-raid." They're still going to be utilizing the essentials (running the ball)
number 1: that Buffs game was rigged. they wanted Prime to win for better ratings. 2: Wisky gonna be just great this year. You got the best coach available and Mordecai is a fantastic QB. i think he just needs to settle down a bit. but he's gonna be great. i follow him because he is a former Sooner. those backs ya'll got look really good. i've been telling people to watch out for Wisky this year.

I thought it was good play calling by the badgers, give fickle a couple years to get his recruiting classes in there and mesh his great culture with the teams great culture and I think they will be a really good team

Didn't look like your typical Wisconsin defense. But it's early in the season. I was surprised that Buffalo ran the ball as well as they did.
the defense will also naturally probably play a little worse since they'll have to play more series since the new spread offense will move so much faster. At least Iowa and Michigan still play good old Big Ten football.

I was at the game and thought this was the 1980 season all over again until the second half. This post is not about the football players, but the poor student response at the end of the game. About 5 minutes until the end of the game, I would say 95% of the students left and did not stick around for the 5th quarter and the singing of the school song, Varsity. I remember back in Sept 1980, in Detling House (Sellery Hall A Tower) how the upperclassmen taught the freshman which I part of the importance of the song and school spirt. We would never have left until Varsity was sung. I dont blame the incoming freshman, but I do blame the upperclassman. I love to hear from others on their opinion on what I wrote. I hope school spirit is still alive in Madison

Love the win, but the same ol' problem still exists. QB play needs to be better. Haven't had one since Russell Wilson and Scott Tolzien before him. Fix it Madison and take care of the football
Remember Mertz had 5 TDs in his debut. It's one game. Wisconsin QB room is the deepest it has ever been in 1 off-season with Fickle and Longo. We salivated over our first 4 star QB recruit in Mertz. Longo brought in 3-4 4 star QBs already. Give it time. Interestingly I looked back at Tolziens junior year and they squeaked out a win by 7 over a MAC team in Northern Illinois in week 1 and 3 point win over WAC school Fresno St. Both at home. They finished the year 10-3 and the following year they made a bigger jump.
The sloppiness was to be expected considering almost everything is brand new to a lot of these players. We brought in a bunch of transfers, the offense is completely new to the guys that were here last year, the defense is similar but the players are being asked to do different things, and the punter/kicker weren't even on the team last year. Someone rewatched the game to do an analysis, and they realized that about 75% of the pass plays were 20 yards or less, and Longo was forcing the passing game even though we could have run the ball for 500 yards on these guys. Longo loves to throw intermediate to deep passes but he didn't call very many of those plays which makes it easy for a team like Buffalo to defend the pass. The defense was playing really hesitant, but they seemed to be in the right spots.
@@erics607 If Bell doesn't drop that (deep pass) inevitable touchdown, do you think that has any impact on the subsequent calls played? I'm assuming it doesn't, but curious about it. Have you seen any analysis saying that Longo will likely incorporate more deep passes as the offense gets more comfortable and familiar this season? Thanks. 🙂

@@lucerach2305 It could have played a role into how the plays were called. I know on passing play the fans were complaining that Mordecai didn't throw the ball deep, but literally every receiving threat ran a hitch, a deep slant, or a swing route. Kind of difficult to throw the ball deep when that wasn't the design of the play. I do know that Longo has benched QB's at his previous stops for not throwing the deep ball and instead taking a simple 5 yard throw. With all the new pieces on offense, I feel like he wanted to keep it simple so that everyone can gain some confidence. This is the first time Mordecai has had time to stand in the pocket to pass the ball (his O-line at SMU was terrible), and it's the first time that the skill position players have had to go against a team that game planned them for an entire week. A lot of these early season teams will try and do stuff you're not expecting to ruin your season or help them appeal to the bowl game committee to get a better bowl. A lot of our fans were complaining about how we played yesterday, but then don't even look at the fact that Iowa struggle against a team they should have beat easily, OSU didn't look dominant against a team they would normally destroy, Purdue got beat by a team they should have beat, and a team in TCU that played for a national championship lost to Colorado, a program that is never good outside of this year possibly.

Lots of dangerous passes thrown and.2 INT vs Buffalo is not impressive. Defense looked choppy. Did not look like a top 25 team.
D-line wasn't great.
O-line, WRs and Safeties were terrible.
Really liked the LBs, RBs and even the CBs.

Buffalo defense is pathetic especially against the run. So Wisky has got some problems. Like many of us do. Fickle and the air-raid would NOT be on my list of coaches for my program. We could have had him. But we went another way. Thankfully. Good luck.
