Contrary to popular belief Dave actually has a good VOICE. It fits all the songs, he can do pretty much all vocal types, he can sing mellow, harsh, angry, low, highpitched. Guitarist first, then vocalist though.
Well this is prime Dave vocals let’s be honest here he was only really good at certain times. In the 80s he sang great if he wasn’t too fucked up. He sang pretty good in the early 90s he was a little more consistent then before. Mid to late 90s is peak Mustaine by far from a life performance perspective until about 1998 then he started to become more inconsistent from age or drinking or both.
Of the guys who played an instrument and SANG, he's second for the thrash scene to Hetfield. Tom Araya didn't sing he did vocals, and most of the other big thrash acts had a vocalist/singer who wasn't playing an instrument. I just don't see the point of comparing him to like a Phil Anselmo who didn't have to play guitar too.
An argument can be made that the best line up is with Gar and Chris. Marty and Nick are their most commercially successful line up. I personally love both. But, people don't appreciate how talented the original line up was, and how they shaped what Megadeth became in the Rust in Peace era. After all, Marty had to play in the style of Megadeth, which Poland helped create. And Gar is still the best drummer Megadeth has had, and I just mean technically. Music is subjective of course, but Gar was much more intricate and nuanced than Nick. Nick had really good energy and stage presence. That being said, they were on heroin when they wrote those first two albums, so of course the music was more intricate. Rust in Peace was being written before Marty, and after Rust in Peace the music became more simplified and commercial. And that was a byproduct of Marty not wanting to just do only thrash. As soon as he left, Megadeth went back to their roots.
@@itsalwayssomething7490 Yeah I agree with you man, many people tend to ignore the first line up but forget how important and essential it was for the evolution of the band's sound 🤘
@@itsalwayssomething7490 Megadeth's original lineup is amazing. Killing Is My Business and Peace Sells are great albums. Peace Sells is Megadeth's 2nd best album. That said Megadeth's best album is Rust In Peace and the band was at their peak live from 1990-93. This is obviously my opinion and everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Also it wasn't just Marty. Dave wanted more commercial success during the 90's and as the leader of the band I doubt he'd let Marty dictate the band's musical direction. Countdown and Youthanasia aren't thrash but they are both great albums imo.
@@SuperStrik9 Yeah, I agree. Dave was chasing the commercial success Metallica had and after CTE, he got a taste of that success and pushed it further and further. But, I specifically remember at the time some interviews from Marty that was him saying he wanted to paint in other colors, and Megadeth was painting in battleship grey. There are conflicting accounts, just like in Dave's Rust in Peace book, where Marty remembers one thing and Dave remembers another. I'm sure some of it was Dave wanting to accommodate Marty because he felt Marty elevated the band, and he wanted to keep him happy. But, I'm sure Dave mis-remembers from all the drugs he's taken. Marty has become more bitter over the years, and felt Megadeth had nothing new to offer, so he wasn't really up for a reunion, but would have done it for the right money. I always feel as though Marty become unappreciative when it came to Megadeth. Although he was an accomplished guitar player, his status was elevated because of his time in Megadeth. Somewhere in the middle is the truth. Ellefson is probably the better guy to get the real story from. Interviews with him and Marty during the Risk era indicated they wanted to take Megadeth in a broader direction. And its telling that when he left, they started heading back to their roots. So, who knows? I think you're right, though. Dave did crave that success, but then eventually came to terms with the fact that their commercial direction didn't really pay off like he hoped. Funny this is, I was a fan of Risk. It's not my favorite Megadeth album, but as an album of music, I think its brilliant. But, had Marty stayed, I feel as though they would have went further down that hole. It was ok for one album, but I wouldn't have wanted them to keep doing that. Also, it seems as though whenever Dave gets new members, he makes a heavier album.
@@itsalwayssomething7490 I didn't like Risk but can appreciate that it's a good album for what it is. It's just not a good Megadeth album. I was happy when they started going back to a heavier direction with The World Needs A Hero.
