Sonny Liston - Was an American professional boxer who competed from 1953 to 1970. A dominant contender of his era, he became world heavyweight champion in 1962 after knocking out Floyd Patterson in the first round, repeating the knockout the following year in defense of the title; in the latter fight he also became the inaugural WBC heavyweight champion. Liston was particularly known for his toughness, formidable punching power, and intimidating appearance.

It is so good to see that Sonny Liston is getting the respect and recognition he rightly deserves as one of the greatest heavyweights of all time.
thanks..
It would’ve been great if he was recognized while alive. But nonetheless, he is getting that recognition.
THE Greatest
@Reduwon Siddiki Still scaring you
@Reduwon Siddiki Even if Sonny's not the greatest boxer of all time.. He's definitely the greatest slugger (Power puncher in other words) of all time.. His power was 2nd to none
When George Foreman says you hit hard, you hit fucking hard.
Around 6 feet tall... with a 7 foot reach. The longest reach (relative to height) that I've ever seen in sports. Oh and 15 inch fists. the guy was a freak of nature.
214 cm heavy jab range.. that could ko you .. sad he is mostly forgotten -- best ever
@@MissBehaven1974 6'1 and a hair below 7'0 range
Still ridiculous
The best thing about Sonny Liston was that he had more than solid fundamentals, he could've survived based on his power alone but he took the time to sharpen his craft. His coordination was also underrated for a man of his size
born to fight
dang what did they feed him
THE greatest jab of all time. Not only the most powerful, but the most effective too. He had several ways he used it. Spectacular, he must have spent thousands of hours in his room at night practising it. Criminally underrated boxer. R.I.P
^
"Every time he hit me, he broke something" recalled Chuck Wepner. Scary about Liston, but also impressive line from Wepner, who had a surprising way with words.
His reach is so deceptively long for a man of his height, it must be like getting hit in the face across the ring by an elastic band with a cinder block taped to it.
That's why I like Liston over Foreman. He never goes straight for the knockout like George, he paces himself, draws out the bout then when the time is right... *goes in for the kill.*
Liston has a very controlled type of violence. You can sense how he packs tremendous power in those shots but never allows himself to go overboard and lose balance. How precise he is given the power of his shots
@@73kimura It's what foreman was missing in my opinion.
He had great defense, great counter and great power and he know how to use it properly
@@lI_Demonata_Il oh that how foreman won the heavyweight championship at 45 years old
@@damianbajic8971 He had terrible defense. He could parry, but 0 headmovement.
Would of loved to see footage of Foreman and Liston sparring.
@Michael Ares How do you know this?
@@lefez9015 He doesn't know it; no footage of it, the only thing we know is George said Sonny was the only man to ever back him up and was the strongest man he ever faced, plus George hit him a good shot and Sonny looked at him and softly said, 'no son".
@@mstrunn " No son" that's scary
Le Fez Mike Tyson named Sonny Liston as the most intimidating heavyweight of all time even going as far as saying he was stronger than him.
@@maoto2283 That's true
While most would consider Liston one of the best Heavyweights of all time some people may not know he had one of the greatest jabs as well. Not made a Liston highlight for a while so thought I'd make a new one. www.patreon.com/haNZAgod
haNZAgod you must do Vincent Pettway?
No bad Chad dawson
He was very good, but he could not cut of the ring at all :P Watch the 1st fight with Clay (Ali)
"hehe, I'll just fight this guy from the outsi......awww s**t"
😆😆😆
2:21 he completely nullifies his opponent's offense with that jab. Incredible.
Jesus, look at the extension he gets on that jab, coupled with the biggest fists ever that probably felt like a telephone pole hitting you lol.
Hulk smash 86 "biggest fists ever" ?
daddydaddy_ c00l 3 dudes stood a chance to knock Ali out you said Liston is one of them leaving 2 able to knock him out. So who of the following: Frazier, Foreman, Ken Norton, Earnie Shavers, Floyd Patterson are you disrespecting?
daddydaddy_ c00l So you cannot see Tyson knock out Ali lol. He was knocked down by Frazier and in all 3 fights experienced pain which he later called “near death experience”
daddydaddy_ c00l Mike didn’t need encouragement he was a killer by mindset the drugs partying etc fucked him up. Mike Tyson under Rooney would have retired undisputed and undefeated.
daddydaddy_ c00l Foreman himself said he didn’t actually wanted to fight Mike he was just glad Mike didn’t want to fight Foreman either. Evander Holyfield went blow for blow with Foreman. Mike might have got just a little less power but definitely has the technique and movement over Foreman. Foreman hits like he is chopping down trees Mike puts his entire body behind punches.
I'm 29 and I've been studying combat sports for about 3 years now and it's safe to say that Sonny Liston is my favorite Heavyweight boxer of all time
84 inch reach helps, particularly when he was outreaching many by as much as 10 inches. Also the biggest fists ever for a heavyweight. Simply made for the game?
too many people have misconceptions when it comes to ability. Sonny grew up on a sharecropping farm with a horribly abusive father who made him plow fields, dig, thrash pecans and other farm work from the day young sonny could walk. All that work for consecutive years will undoubtedly build immense strength, particularly in the shoulders, back, forearms and hands. Once he was grown and started boxing, he started doing calisthenics and other boxing workouts which strengthened him further and weighing 218 and doing dips, pull ups, push ups, etc while already strong and you get this monster. In short, it's not genetics or a miracle, just hard work for a long time...the reach on the other hand is natural.
and if you look at past HW KO artists (Earnie Shavers, Joe Frazier, Jack Dempsey) They have similar backgrounds where they grow up doing grown mans work that builds immense strength so by the time they hit 18 they're beasts.
jogervazio floyd had good power before his hands got done... he was knocking people out in his younger days.
Pistol 8 Kev he was knocking them out with his speed he was never a 1 punch fighter
@@hueyfreeman1983 yeah he wadnt a mike tyson and patterson was 190lbs he wasn't a modern heavyweight
Thank you brother!!! I love that you rep for the man who was born without a chance.
Great comment :)
Best comment.
Great video man! :45 is so crazy, you can see his ridiculous reach very clearly. Legendary.
Reznick who's your favourite fighter of all time
I saw liston had a 84" reach and we know in boxing to sometimes take the numbers with some contents so I came to watching film for a better understanding of and this boy had reach for days!
George talks about Sonny's strength.. it's funny because Sonny always spoke highly of the strength a young George Foreman had. Nobody backed up Sonny outside of George.
sonny liston enver spoke of geroge power lol sonny would have killed him with one hand
BigBadWolf he was lol look how he ko people he had pure power no one is like him.
forman fought only frazier and frazier will get ko by liston too lmao geroge is no one
Power and strength are two different things.
You forgot to mention Mike Tyson he too admire Liston
I would of loved to have met him.
Liston is such a beast in the ring. He also was known to split his boxing gloves in sparring sessions. Whatever power he had behind him definitely made a statement to his opponent. Would have been nice to see him at his prime in person
Liston's jab knocked teeth out.
His fights with Cleveland Williams and Patterson were my first exposure to the guy.
What a very underrated champion.
Liston's jab was really long and brutally concussive. You rarely see a jab land with such force. I am sure that after tasting Liston's jab his opponents got immediate anxiety about how hard Liston's power punches would feel. Once his jab started landing it would not take long for them to find out first hand.
100
Tyson did say "Everybody has a plan till they get punched in the face." but Sonny's power made it so you either sleep or get ugly after each jab
Who knows how old Sonny really was when he was putting in this work, he was no young up and comer but still cleared out the heavyweight division even before he got a shot at the title.
Not even he knew how old he was, he'd always say different dates
@@logan51726 thats because he was born in a state that didn't require birth certificates. His mom herself was unsure of his birthday.
@@cheetoyeeto1232 yeah crazy really, but his sister did say he was born before what's actually stated on his boxing license, as do police records
@@logan51726 I’d say Liston was born as early as 1917, or as late as 1926. Circa 1920, give or take a few years.
Talk about full extension on that jab. He’s practically sideways when he throws it, and it’s done with laser speed & accuracy, and at a rapid fire pace! Liston showing how it’s done.
R.I.P. my fellow boxer and legendary champion Sonny Liston. 🥊💖🙏🏾
Great video, this really inspired me to work on my jabs! Thanks so much, btw the soundtrack was really badass with the video.
Sonny Liston looks like the guy who has never been to a gym but can lift a truck. Pure, raw strength this man has.
Bro he big as hell wym never look like he been in a gym
Sweet song wit tha video👌
Another great video! I love your quick highlights vids
How did Ali Dodge most of listons jabs is insane.
rigged .. mafia..
Tyson said he was cut from Listons cloth...dude was a true monster...that's why we had a Foreman!!!! 😎🇺🇸👊
This guy is a beast .....,,that stare is enough to kill his opponents...m

My Top 10 Hardest Punchers
1. Earnie Shavers - Labeled by boxing experts and boxers to be the hardest puncher of all time. Muhammad Ali who faced Liston, Foreman, Lyle, Frazier, and had a brief sparring with Marciano stated that Shavers hit the hardest among them. Holmes and Norton also agree that Shavers hits harder than anybody including Foreman, Tyson, and Lyle.
2. Sonny Liston - The greatest slugger to have ever stepped in the ring. He is also known to possess the largest hands in boxing history. He is also the boxer with the hardest jab. His jab is capable of knocking out his foes and majority said that his jab was sinilar to a telephone pole. Ali, Wepner and other boxers who him stated that he hit harder than Foreman. He also has one of the hardest left hooks and right overhands im the history of boxing. Foreman said that he was forced to go on defensive in one of their sparring matches, considering that Liston was older than him that time. One of the most intimidating boxers past their prime. He is best known for knocking Floyd Patterson out.
3. George Foreman - One of the scariest monsters in boxing history due to his size, durability and insane punching power. He is known for beating Frazier, Norton, and Moorer. He is also known for his brilliant slugfest with Lyle in which he won and his fight with Ali, Morrison, and Holyfield. He is the oldest boxer to have ever win in a boxing championship. According to Holyfield; Old George Foreman hit him harder than any of the opponents he's ever faced which includes: Mike Tyson, Lennox Lewis, Buster Douglas, and Riddick Bowe. In his fight with the undefeated Joe Frazier that beat Ali, he caused an upset when he defeated Frazier by stoppage after knocking him down several times. Ken Norton a notable boxer puncher known for beating Ali, also got brutally knocked out by Foreman in the second round.
4. Rocky Marciano - The greatest swarmer of all time and the only undefeated fighter in this list. With formidable punching power, insane stamina, and granite chin, he is known for beating legendary boxers; Joe Louis (though he was past his prime), Jersey Joe Walcott, Ezzard Charles, and more. He is best known for one of the most devastating punches ever thrown, which is his right cross to Walcott. He is also the only boxing champion in this list to have never been knocked out. Despite having the smallest arms in the heavyweight division and being one of the shortest boxers, he was able to knock most of his opponents out.
5. Max Baer - probably the hardest puncher in his era. This guy killed some boxers in the ring, that is a testament of his punching power. It took someone like Joe Louis to beat him up, but he was already way past his prime that time and he had an injury that affected his performance in the ring that time.
6. Ron Lyle - A hard puncher, a tough slugger, and a crowd pleaser, Lyle is one of the greatest boxers who has never won any championship. He is best remembered for his slugfest with Foreman. Even though Lyle lost to Foreman he is the only boxer who has ever knocked Foreman down twice and not because of exhaustion but because of his punching power. He also outslugged Earnie Shavers, who is considered to be the hardest puncher of all time. He was also notable for breaking Ali's nose in their fight even though he lost. One of the hardest punchers ever as stated by George Foreman.
7. Wladimir and Vitali Klitschko - The latest hardest punchers in the history of boxing. According to Freddie Roach, Wladimir's hands are heavier than Mike Tyson and he actually hits slightly harder than him. Vitali on the other hand has a sharper punch than Foreman (though Foreman is already old and definitely way past his prime) according to Shannon Briggs. They would lose to other boxers in this list except for Shavers, since boxers back then have more durable chin and harder punching power.
8. Mike Tyson - With incredible speed, power, and reflexes: Tyson is definitely one of the greatest boxers and heavy hitters of all time, especially in his prime years under Cus and Rooney. Even though he became a shadow of his own self later on (He lost his great reflex and discipline because of Don King) he was still a formidable puncher and the most intimidating boxer of all time. Whether it's a Left Hook, Gazelle Punch, Right Uppercut, or a Right Cross that hits you, you'll be down for the count. He can hit hard from both angles.9. Lennox Lewis - One of the most complete boxers of all time. A renowned boxer puncher known for his boxing iq and punching power. He also defeated boxers like Holyfield, Vitali Klitschko, Tua, and Mike Tyson (though Tyson was way past his prime). He is easily one of the greatest hevayweight fighters of all time. His long arms and accurate punches are the reason for his powerful punches.
10. Joe Louis - The greatest boxer of all time as labelled by boxing experts, no offense to Ali. His punching power comes from his accurate, precise, and flawless punching style. One of the earliest boxer-punchers, his talent was ahead of his own time. Whether it's a jab, a hook or a cross, you don't want to get hit. In his prime, he was a force to be reckoned with and only Schmelling was able to beat him in his younger years. Louis later avenged his defeat by knocking out Scmelling in the first round in their rematch. This "Black Bomber" is considered to be a hero of the United States.
Honorable Mentions
1. David Tua - a hard puncher, but known only for his left hook. His other punches are impressive, but not as impressive as the top 10.
2. Joe Frazier - same as David Tua. Also a one armed cannon. He had the best left hook in history
3. Gerry Cooney - Another one armed cannon. It's all left hook or nothing.
4. Deontay Wilder - he needs to beat relevant opponents which possess great chin. It's way too early to rank him.
5. Julian Jackson - I didn't include him, since boxers from the heavyweight division punch harder.
6. Roberto Duran - same reason as Julian Jackson.
7. Hasim Rahman - a powerful puncher indeed, but the top 10 contenders in this list have knocked more relevant people.
8. Sam Langford - He is definitely one of the hardest punchers out there, but I didn't include him because he is smaller and lighter than these heavyweights.
9. Jack Dempsey - I'll definitely place him in the top 10, but my gut tells me his punching power is inferior to the people in the list.
10. Anthony Joshua - same reason as Deontay Wilder.
11. Cleveland Williams - I'm not yet sure about him.
12. Tommy Morrison - He hits hard, but not hard enough to be ranked alongside these ten fughters.
I'd put Shavers third since he had only power in his right hand. Liston and Foreman had power in both.
@@tloustrats That's what I also thought. He actually knocked Lyle down with a left hook and KOed Young with it too. It tends to be underrated because of his signature overhand right. Also, ignore this list. This is actually outdated
His jab looks like its growing longer when he throws it! Unreal.
You always put that fire 🔥 ass music 🎶 hats 🎩 off to you
RIP To Sonny Liston that is a wonderful Jab Liston is throwing
I keep thinking that the aspect ratio of the video is messed up,
but no... *his reach is really that long*
214 cm heavy jab.. many was KO by it
At the 1:43 mark...Sonny throws a punch that made Razor Ruddock hot for a second.
Yeah looked like his smash punch
In my opinion Sonny Liston and Vitali Klitchko the two most underrated heavyweights of all time. Good video brother 👊👊
Hamza Khaliq true that
Hamza Khaliq Michael moorer
Both stopped on shoulder injuries
Hamza Khaliq Yeah he was one of those guys even on his worst nights found a way to win.
Hamza Khaliq R. Bowe could have been the best ever. The GOAT indeed. It was a pity he wasn't disciplined and never liked to train. The fight of my dream would have been Bowe-Lewis both at their best! Just to prove everybody how better Bowe was and especially because he was robbed BIG time at the Olympics.
Very nice! :)
Back in a time when boxers didn't lift weights, Liston is muscled like someone who ~does~!
Yes
GOOD video!
Great video and I love the tribute from Foreman. George also said Liston was the only man who could make him back up. And that was in about 1969 or so, when Liston was at the end of his career.
Beatyful and brutal boxe

Sonny Liston great Boxéur Fantastic.
Great Champion.
Liston had a powerful left jab. Foreman too. Ali's, flicking, not bad intentions behind it.
Liston in his prime, lates 50's early 60's, was the best heavyweight ever.
Not only that, but Liston beats any other heavyweight in history. I believe that a well-trained, prime Liston who stays away from drugs, alcohol, partying, etc, beats a prime Muhammad Ali like he’s his dad.
@@johnd.597 Hyperbolic and Tyson fanboy logic. Liston wasn’t even much of a partier or drug user, that’s just narrative games. He just happened to be pretty old once he finally got his just due. Ali never had a true prime , but in his best years he’s a hard fight for Liston due to his ability to counter the jab, measure the distance and circle away from punishment with his foot speed. Prime Joe Louis is also a hard fight for Liston because of his ability to parry and counter the jab, and get inside/cut off the ring. The whole “ X beats every other opponent” is just bad analyses. Styles make fights. A pure boxer stylist would give Liston problems. Defensive Eddie Machen went the distance with prime Sonny.
If he had Steward as a trainer, he would have utilized that reach so much better. His arm just keeps going. It would be soo deceiving fighting him too because you wouldn't expect him to be able to hit you. That's what happens when he extends that left hook and catches guys. They are sure they're out of range and the BAM.
He has one of the best jabs in heavyweight history. I highly doubt Steward could make it better. Joe Louis himself said he wouldn't jab with Liston which gives you a idea how good Liston jab is.
You'll make it to 80k this year bro, no problem. 👍 ✌️
Getting really close now just a few hundred left!
@@hanzagod there's no doubt in my mind you'll get there bro, your content reflects that and your one of the best boxing highlight channels on UA-cam. 👍 ✌️
Crazy reach. He is a genetic freak
The true most dangerous and strongest fighter they had to put 4 people in the ring with him to put up a challenge
I never seen Sonny Liston in Color til this Video.
Most boxers throw a lot of empty point scoring left jabs. But sonny was diferent. Every jab could maim you or burst your face open. Thats what had his opponents shaking in their boots. As one opponent said every time sonny hit me he broke something
Pound for pound, best jab ever in boxing.
Liston, my favorite boxer, I have his biography, its sad that he had such a troubled life, by the time he met Ali (then Clay) he was well past his prime but unfortunately thats when most people remember his start from. Its fun to talk about "dream fights", my answer for these especially when big punchers are involved is whoever gets in the first good punch will probably win, kind of a copout but oh well lol. I had a nice amateur career and if I can brag a little I was 42 - 0 but quit while I was ahead. Who was the biggest puncher of all time? Man thats a really tough one since it depends on who hits you cleanly, what kind of day they're having and there's different kinds of hard punchers (compare for example Tyson and Foreman) Liston was definitely in the running, and Joe Louis overhand right was devastating, honorable mention was the late Teofilio Stevenson's overhand right, man what a pro he would have been! Ok time for work, all the best everyone!
He definitely wasn't prime but he also wasn't shot cuz he went on to win around 14 more bouts after losing to Ali ..he boxed till 1970
I never realised how much reach he could get on that jab ..he pops it from so far back his opponent is like a foot short with his punch but liston connects...what was his exact reach ?
Reportedly 84"
@@hanzagod same as Jon Jones ..and he uses his reach to dominate MMA the same way

Must've been the left shoulder that got thrown out in the first fight against Ali. Liston had too many miles on him by that time. Too many miles on that Oak-tree jabbing left arm. The shoulder can only last so long especially with all of that striking force.
Ali would've had a much tougher fight with 50s Liston. In their actual fight Ali evaded Liston's jab by just a hair
My his soul rest in peace to me Sonny is the most underrated Heavyweight champion in the history of boxing...And on one of the best jab's in heavyweight boxing history like Ali may his soul rest in peace and Larry Holmes but they use there jab backing up but Sonny use his coming forward...If Ali hadn't came along when he did ,Sonny was well past his prime by then but no else could have beat him but Ali.....And he would beat a lot of them that many rank ahead of him not many in the history of the heavyweight history stood a chance against a prime Sonny and I mean no one !!!!!!
Not so much underrated as swept under the carpet. It wasn't fair the way he was treated.
Seriously Liston's got a height to arm ratio is second only to a Gibbon.

Rocket jab !
Hey you probably won't but can you do one of ike quartey jab and defense sometime
Holmes, Ali and Listo all time great heavyweight jabs
Kept that left in their face the entire match. Dayum.
Liston! Liston! Liston!
Something a strong boxer should train endlessly. If you are genetically built for power punches, perfect the jab and you’re a dangerous puncher.
his ape index/ reach was incredible
Sadly, the public and the media didn’t have a fuck he was a champion till Ali beat him.
But great fighter.
Great slugger/brawler.
For all those who think tyson would have beat Liston , Patterson and tyson had the same style and trainer and look what Liston did to Patterson
I agree liston beats tyson, but patterson didn't have a good jab or uppercut like tyson and he weighed alot less. Tyson also used the dempsey roll.
Hard to argue against a jab that used to knock down opponents.

I really can't think of many fighters Liston couldn't fuck up. And I don't mean beat, I mean fuck up bad, crack some ribs, knock a couple teeth, make them want to retire kinda thing.
Watching this made me only admire Muhammad Ali even more he has a lesser reach yet still outstriked Liston and dodged so many of his punches at the age of 22. I am currently 19 and would shit my pants sparring someone like Liston let alone box him for the World Title.
It was a great performance but Liston was well past his prime. His movements were slower and more stiff. He claimed to be 32 years old at the time of the bout, but many believed that his true age was closer to 40, perhaps even older.[5] Liston had been suffering from bursitis in his shoulders for close to a year and had been receiving cortisone shots. In training for the Clay fight, he re-injured his left shoulder and was supposedly in pain striking the heavy bag. He secretly resorted to heavy icing and ultrasound therapy after each training session.
perfect title!! his left hand was amazing, if Deontay Wilder can perfect his left hand and work on his jab... or left hand in general he'll be crazy!! he's already a world champion with a rusty technique imagine what he'd do if he refined it.
Zidane ZZ Your talking about Lennox Lewis or Wladimir Klitchko. If wilder got better technically and I mean a lot better he would be similar to them. But boxing is not all about boxing ability. Wilder has a tremendous ability to land his right hand and seperate other boxers from their senses. It don't matter if he can be outboxed because as long as he is still in the fight he always has that right hand and he has a great ability to measure you and study you while even being outboxed maybe but his just waiting for that one moment to land the right hand. Now that may or may not work againts some people but so far he has been very effective with it.
Wilder do need work in the gym and perfect his technique
Compared to a Monster of a fighter like Liston, Wilders dirt, "below dirt." To be brutally honest
Daniel Burress
Wilder is not as unrefined as he appears to be. He does know how to break an opponent's guard using his reach. That helps him land his right hand quite well.
Zidane ZZ wilder is 33 if he hasn't already learned then he will never learn
video suggestion: Juan Manuel Marquez- make him miss make him pay/ routes to the body

haNZAgod, any plans to do a Jose Stable highlight?
I'm not very familiar with him I think the only fight I've seen was the Griffith one. Was he any good? I can't seem to remember thinking he was anything special.
Yes, his upper-body movement was first-rate, and most welters in history would have lost to Griffith; there's no shame in that. Four of his fights are on UA-cam ( ua-cam.com/play/PL-fvD9jAmwXcXJqaLmH2x-9fTY7sXh6hL.html ) Certainly you've produced defense highlights for far less sophisticated fighters than Stable. And is David Lemieux 'special'?!
