One of boxing's most feared champions, Sonny Liston was a formidable foe for whoever faced him. Relentless, dynamic, and skillfully brutal, Sonny was a force to be reckoned with. He packed an 84-inch reach, a menacing jab, and knockout power in both hands. All of these assets were enough to crush just about anyone.

To all Tyson fans. Tyson was scary as hell, he had a scary face and punch. But about Liston, it was his look, very quiet and misterious, and his wingspan, his power, his jab. When Foreman says all of that you better belive it
Even Tyson admits Sonny Liston is the greatest intimidator... and this why we should admire Ali's courage
I mean, tyson admitted to be afraid of all, afraid of losse, of get hummillated of getting KO'd. But he ised that fear against him opppnents back then, but sonny liston was a Big Bear with a steel chin and an stone hands
Listen to gear get he’s sparred with him a lot so he knows he took a lot of his intimidation from Liston but he knew who was boss
Mike Tyson idolized Sonny Liston. Mike said he was the meanest fighter who ever lived. Any true Tyson fan knows this. WE KNOW THIS
search he's jab range and you will be mind blowed
Never saw a Guy hitting the heavybag like Liston did, not even Foreman.
The physically strongest man to ever put on a pare of gloves, only functional muscle mass. He would kill those clowns today only with his jab.
A walking powerhouse, with a body made to survive, defend and destroy.
I don't know about just with a jab, but I'm confident he'd beat them.
Liston didn't need much of a defense LOL
Absolutely.
Sonny was a killing machine.
Sony liston was one of the hardest men whoever walked this earth. Ali said he was'nt afraid of him. Believe me he was afraid . any fighter who said they wer'nt afraid of liston would have their licence revoked as mentally unfit to box
@@davidwalker5054 Yes, you are right and he admitted it in later years. He went on to say, that Liston was the only man in the ring, he ever feared. Ali was the man and he played mind games. when he was older, he said, he was threatend to death by Liston. I love both, but Sonny is my favorite fighter in history. he was a monster, espacially in the late 50´s early 60 he was the most avoided fighter in hw hitory
Sonny Liston had hard life. Really a sad story!
Lonnie Thompson Maybe if people gave him some respect his life could of ended up different.
That guy was a monster. Just watching him stare at the camera is intimidating enough.
Someone PLEASE make a movie of this man's life.
that would be a sad story if you start with his childhood and farther
There is a great Documentary of him from Showtime Pariah the lives and deaths of sonny liston check it out
There is phantom punch with Ving Rhames as sonny liston. The Film isn't really that good, but one time watching is ok
Sonny Liston's fists literally knocked opponents across the ring. I've never seen any heavyweight like that. Not even Foreman or Tyson.
I hear 💯 but Iron Mike def was making fools fly in the ring
The only other puncher who made em airborne was Ernie Shavers.
I think Sonny emited an aura of intimidation which was an unesparable part of his very soul. Hevyweight giants were afraid to meet him in the ring. General public were afraid to meet him even in a crowded main Street. Journalist were afraid to interview him. Even his friends were always careful not to make him angry. He intimidated people by his mere presence . Truly he is the greatest intimidater in the history of boxing.
Liston, 84” reach at 6’1, and till this day, the biggest fists in boxing history. JEEZ!
Lennox Lewis match the size of the fist
Lewis is a Super Heavyweight. Fat men killed boxing.
What he did twice to Cleveland Williams, who possibly could be a belt holder even nowadays -- imagine what he would have done to Joshua or Wilder.
Today's heavyweights are huge, I don't think the fighters in our day could compete with them, their in a different weight class.
To be honest it would be damn tough. They both stand 15 cm taller than him, with a 10-20 lbs weight advantage. Sure this era has way less greats but nobody is walking through these guys.
Liston has an 84 inch reach and 15 inch fists fury has an 85 inch reach. With Liston, shavers, Mike Tyson, George, Ali I think they could do it.
Liston and Williams would kill those clowns within 3 rounds
@@sonnyliston8475 agreed, too much power for them.
6'1" tall with an 84-inch reach? Insane!
How do you count that out? If he has wide shoulders it wouldn't solely be the reach
Bonecrushing punching power/ 1950s & very early 1960s;; sonny liston;; invincible
That would mean his spread wingspan is 7 feet!
Bro thats insane reach for a 6 ft 1 guy. Even tyson fury has a reaach of 85 inches at 6 ft 9, and people talk about his reach all the time. This is the same reach on 6 1 guy.....thats crazy.
Don't forget his 15 1/2" fists.
Imagine him without the mafia holding him back hed be unstoppable
Yeah that's what I am thinking
Without the mob you’d never hear of him
@@hassanx9423 yeah your right but if the mobs didn't hold him tho in the peak of his career, he won't be at top 14 of each list of the greatest heavyweights
DTLA where did they hold him in the peak of his career?
@@hassanx9423 there was a theory that they said that if he didn't lose to a boxer in his last match they'll kill him, don't know if it's true but there are many story that said he'd be killed if he didn't follow the mafia's instruction
Really enjoyed that video man. Great work!
Resume speaking, he is not a top 5 heavyweight. But there is not 5 heavyweight in the history of boxing that could beat Sonny Liston in his prime. Straight Killer.
Sonny Liston is a top 5 HW. Ali was clearly better and foreman in his prime probably could get it down. Foreman hit harder he just has mad respect for Liston
@@surveying482 ali was 10 years younger than liston and Forman was no where near liston skill level
Probably the second best ever but Ali fought him outside of his prime
That Liston jab was awesome.
If Liston was around today he'd kill everyone in HW.
No question.
Well that's heavily exaggerated
King JackRII Yeah but he would beat most of them top contenders. Also he was way more dynamic than AJ for example, had a better chin and was a heavier puncher. His technique is very underrated, idk why.
No doubt
@Damonta Robinson liston would break mike in half
Biggest fist size in the history of boxing. He was big and skillful. I think Liston would do good in any era because he wasnt just a slugger but he was very skilled and slipped punches well. He would be a good sized heavyweight even for today. His reach was longer than furys and he had great defense.
Sonny was the man.. Gone long before his time...
I love what Wepner said. Clearly articulates what he went through 'fighting' Liston.
"every time he hit you, you broke something"
listen to the sound his gloves make when he makes contact......he was a beast.
214 cm range of hard jabs. insane
AKhan: Outstanding piece on the first modern day monster in the heavyweight division. I applaud the skillful editing and your choice of music in presenting Liston as THE intimidator in boxing history. Foreman and Tyson were worthy successors to Liston, but neither fighter could quite capture Liston's sheer menace.
Sonny Liston the original badest man on the planet !
@@blackmondayy1 Yeah. Liston is to boxing what James Brown is to music.
I may be older than some of you guy's I am 69 years old, and I defiantly remember Sonny Liston, I have always liked the guy as a fighter and as far as his personality went, he indeed was a product of his environment, and he honestly was a victim, and a fighter who was taken advantage of by many people who were around him all the time. I have done a lot of reading through the years about him and his story in truth will never be none because whatever he knew he took it to the grave with him, and just about anyone else who knew anything about his career, and the truth about what happened in his two fights with Muhammad Ali, are also long gone by now. In closing I think Ali did beat Liston straight up in the first fight in Miami in 1962 however the second fight in Lewiston Maine was fixed in my opinion however it will never be none because the two men who know are no longer with us!!!!!!!
Liston was an absolute monster, he had a 15 inch fist!! He always 'broke something' 🤣😂😂🥊🥊🥊
He was brilliant, I liked him.
When Mike hits other boxer he was like an assassin: quick, precise, and determined on each hit; George is like a big bully hits smaller kid: beat the shit out of them but at least he will stop when enough; and Sonny is like a man breaking an object: no hold back, not stopping-i feel like if the fight allow to fight to the dead he would straight up maul the other dudes until they gone.
Sonny liston was one of the hardest men to walk the earth. His left jab could do serious injury and his right was like a steam hammer. Any boxer not afraid of liston should have their licence revoked for not mentally fit to box
Sonny Liston one of the best ever. Don't think people notice how good he really was.
I really think if you take a Sonny Liston in his prime say 30 years old maybe 27 28 he would probably and if only the mob was not fucking with him he would probably just about beat
any heavyweight in history if he was motivated and was ready for the fight and not trying to throw the damn thing
I agree, but the mob is the only reason Sonny had a platform and became a pro boxer in the first place.
That music was certainly fitting
Really interesting video, thank you for uploading this on youtube.
Great video. Thanks
Amazing video!! And your music of choice was perfect!
When sonny hit the heavy bag, it sounded like an army artillery shell exploding!!!-- now thats power!!!
my Idol
Liston had possibly the darkest life story of any celeb of the time, let alone tough guys. The possibility of his title loss being a throw, the media circus and police continually trolling his career, his addictions and criminal undertow, and on and on. When do we get a good Hollywood documentary?
ua-cam.com/video/bQyQRWY0eg0/v-deo.html
Mate a chin is a chin. It does not gain muscle mass or build up resistance to a punch. Joe Louis weighed all of 201 pounds and thoroughly demolished 6"5/240 pound Abe Simon and the even bigger Buddy Baer, the brother of former heavyweight champ Max Baer.
Sonny Liston was more Durable than Louis. He was the very definition of a human juggernaut. Impervious to pain( fought with a broken jaw in a full distance fight against Marty Marshall), possessed the biggest fists to this very day( gloves needed to be specially made for him), had the wing span of Lennox Lewis 84 inches ( Lewis 6"5 could be reached with much success by a jab as The limited but tough 6"2 Ray Mercer proved in their Madison Square Garden bout), underrated defensive acumen, a chin composed of U.S. grade A steel and probably the heaviest fists to be witnessed for a big man. He was also surprisingly quick/ limber on his feet during his peak years. His work on the heavy bag surpassed even Foreman in terms of its sheer force of impact. Liston was the perfect heavyweight and he was all functional muscle mass. He fought every style conceivable. I have absolutely zero doubt that Sonny would have knocked out Joshua( who still can't find a style) within 4 rounds, Wilder who is overrated and insulting inept in the basic fundamentals with zero defensive skills inside of 2 rounds, Fury by 8 rounds if not sooner and the rest of this modern sorry lot in short order. And I feel absolutely certain that he would have found the suspect chin of Lennox Lewis from behind that battering ram jab. I'm a solid admirer Of Lennox Lewis and have him in the top 5 but from looking at his biggest flaw( Lennox left his guard low and left his jab hanging out there after he threw it) and his vulnerability to a jab, along with his subpar recuperating abilities after taking a clean hard shot, loses to the durable Liston. A PRIME Cleveland Williams who was just as big as Lennox with quicker hands and a powerful puncher, could not dent Listons chin. I don't see Lennox having much success against a peak Liston. No one has gone through the top ten like Liston did in the history of the sport. He literally cleaned out the top ten as a rising contender in brutal fashion. The division hasn't seen anything like Liston until Tyson and even Tyson didn't have the intimidation factor Liston did. Liston was what Tyson wanted to be in terms of intimidation factor because Sonny was legitimate in that area.
It's even more remarkable when you realize his true birthday was 1917, not 1932, and he was 47 when he fought Ali.
How do you know he was born in 1917?
@@sergiorivera1085he was there when Liston was born
@@sergiorivera1085Its even more remarkable when you realize his true birthday was 1856, not 1932, and he was 108 when he fought Ali.
The baddest man in the planet at one time!
An inspired choice to set it to the music of 28 days later! Really captures the menace and dread of being stalked by the near supernatural.
One of my favourite boxers
Wtf at 1:55 liston punch change the colour of his opponents hair
lol
Lmfao
Prime Sonny would have fucked up Tyson in six rounds or less. A truly focused Liston could have competed in any era including today's super heavies.
The man was a freak of nature.
In addition his smile with young children and old people tells you what the human behind the mask truly was.
RIP Sir.
Sonny a man a fighter
NO!!! Sonny Liston is THE GREATES BOXER of all time!
Invincible late 1950s & early 1960s ( 1962) sonny liston
"Every time he hit you he broke something" -Chuck Wepner
If Liston had come along a decade earlier, he would have been champion for 10 years. With all due respect to the greatest overachiever in heavyweight history (e.g., Rocky Marciano), the 6'1" 212 pound Liston was simply too big and too strong for the likes of Charles, Walcott, and Marciano. If you add the fact that Liston had the greatest left hook (e.g., yup, better than Frazier), the heaviest left jab (e.g., Holmes had the better all around left jab), and a ridiculous 84 inch reach (e.g., Marciano had a 68 inch reach), the only chance of victory for heavyweights of the 50's would be to land a lucky/desperation punch. Having said that, the thunderous punching Cleveland Williams had two shots at putting Sonny to sleep, but all he could manage was to slightly stagger Liston in the 1st round of their 1st fight.
He was 220 pounds wasn't he?
@@lI_Demonata_Il Nope. In his prime, Liston fought between 210-215 pounds, and it wasn't until his 1st fight with Ali (e.g., Sonny weighed 217 pounds) that he began to put on extra weight.
@@pjtheory Oh, I see.
If it hadn't been for the super fast 1960s version of Ali, he would have been champion for 10 years in his decade. Only Ali had his number.
@@jeffh58 Father Time had an even bigger number on Liston during his short reign as the heavyweight champion of the world. By most accounts, Liston was in his late 30's when the 22 year old Cassius Clay emerged as the heavyweight of the future. At best, Sonny would have kept his title another 2 or 3 years before the 66 or 67 version of Joe Frazier took away his championship belt.
Liston was probably about 40 when he fought Clay/Ali the first title fight. He was past his prime but still a fearsome formidable boxer. A prime Liston in the late 1950s probably would have been champion but Patterson ducked him then. IMO in that late 1950s period, Liston, Cleveland Williams, Eddie Madchen, and Zora Folley all could have beaten Patterson, who was really more of a hard-hitting light heavyweight, size-wise.
45.
And had a legitimate injury.
These second fightwere fixed and I say this as an Ali fan.
Ali was the GOAT but a prime Sonny without mob bullshit would have run him close.
9-6?
Probably.
Also, one of my fav vids on UA-cam!
thanks a bunch! Personally, I think that this is the best video I have made
AKhan You’re very welcome. You deserve every compliment you receive.
Sick video
Great video
Munsh Monster thank you
Liston Number One Forever.
Sonny Liston was a great champion!
Top 5 heavyweight boxing champion of all time. Sonny Liston.
Genetically most gifted but at the same time inluckiest boxer ever.
Beautiful jab and left hook. But that right hand looks so weird but it seemed to work.
Always liked Joe Frazier, but if it could have happened Liston v Frazier would have been the original Forman v Frazier.
great fighter liston reminds me of marvin haglar long wingspan like hagler everyone said he was a animal but had great boxing skill i love ali but i think the second with ali was a fix but what agreat boxer he would be in my top five of all time
An all time great boxer too
If he was the end boss in a boxing game it would be unbeatable!
this need more attention.. he was the best... tyson and him..
Even Tyson said in an interview, Liston was the most intimidating of all time. Source: ua-cam.com/video/WIxox24A4Vo/v-deo.html at 1:41
Ali was better than Tyson
No punches for checking the distance Or something like that- every Punch with mean intentions
I think sonny Liston is the greatest ever, people have to remember sonny was an old man when he fought Ali, Liston was told to lose by the mafia or else he would be shot dead, his family were held hostage, and would be shot. Ali is my second favourite, but know way would Ali beat him in his prime
Boy sonny had a deadly jab
Better than Larry Holme;; bonecrushing punching power
All of Listons fans are in the year 2020.
Jon jokes is super intimidating as well, he has this diabolical confidence about him, like he’s almost psychopathic no emotions
You should see him trash talk some of his fighters calmly telling them he would literally take their life
R I p beautiful💞💗❤️I met this handsome man with lovely skin🙂he was as wide and tall as a standard door love him too bits
Closest to a wild animal that a human can be!
Badass video
And I’m still here watching 💯
سوني لستون اسطورة لن تتكر مثل جورج فورمان وعلي ومايك تايسون وفريزر
This man was a freak - I do wonder about his prime, perhaps only Big George could go toe to toe with him on an even basis, as for Mike Tyson and his fangirls - 🤣.
Poor Floyd should have never stepped into the ring with sonny. Floyd was used for an image only.
Floyd was obviously a great fighter..u could see the early prototype of the peek-a-boo..
He was just nearly not as good as Sonny
THE REAL CLUBBER LANG
My Favorite Fighters Are These Guys Liston & Hagler, & Armstrong & Mike Tyson, Jake Lamotta, ETC. I Could Go on… These were Specimens, Boxers are Warriors, Gladiators. But these Guys Were More Like the Animals They Had to Fight… Lions and Bears 🔥 It took true courage to face these guys
Edit: History Buffa don’t try and correct me “Gladiator’s Fought each other, Beast Masters Fought Animals” Yep Yep Don’t Care.
Boxeur plus Power: Foreman Number One
Tyson 2°
Liston 3°
Dempsey 4°
Marciano 5°
It's not an horror movie. He was a fighter. and I fought hateless. Look: even in the middle of an action, if he saw that the counterpart was going down, he never landed the last punch, even when he set it off.
What a life he had. Truly an unsung hero.
wepner said when he hit you in the face he hit your whole face
Liston vs mike tyson who would win.?
Liston
Probably Liston, but it would be very different from the Patterson fight due to the Dempsey roll and alot more weight.
Liston. Easily.
Like what year Mike Tyson 1980s vs 1950s sonny liston;; because advance training methods like weight training:: rocky Marciano vs sonny liston more even match:: battle of invincible;; or unbeatable
14 inch hands
🙀
Sonny liston was the human boogeyman
He quit in the corner vs Clay in Miami and although he was getting outboxed it wasn’t a beating that a truly tough HEAVYWEIGHT quits on. You can call Sonny a bully that intimidates as long as he’s fighting from out-front however Ali got him just as he would later get a similar bully in George Foreman...... just as Buster Douglas would topple another out-front intimidator Mike Tyson.....what good is intimidation if you fold in those rare moments you face a fighter that’s not scared...
he had a problem with his shoulder. he was never going to win that fight anyway but I don't think he gave up . he had a problem. rematch however he took a dive
Vitali Klitschko quit in his corner against Byrd with the same injury however he was winning that fight
You do realize in that fight he was estimated to be 44 had drinking problems and an inflamed shoulder right?

TaiwanPingLoad true, but scarier than prime Tyson? I still don’t
Mervyn Codrington Tyson was way more intimidating
