    So I’m 6’3 and I’ve seen people try to use peekaboo in my gym. I use a long guard that is nicknamed “the mummy” and a reverse cross guard. And I’ve seen a lot of peekaboo enthusiasts fail because they try and do advanced shit day one. I mean I fight like a George Foreman enthusiast or a gene fullmer enthusiast but I’ve been practicing the two styles since I was 12. These guys who are 6 months in keep trying to be Mike Tyson. What’s important is EVERYTHING this guys saying. The guy in the video is EXACTLY RIGHT!!! He’s saying it PERFECTLY!!!

    I don’t use the peakaboo style in a general sense, but my boxing coach (I go to an mma gym) teaches us shifting footwork. Step turns, angling shifts, things similar to the D’Amato shift etc….which comes from Kyokushin Karate and Tai Sabaki style footwork which Cus admitted he got the shifting footwork from
    In mma, it’s also good for striking and angling off to avoid takedowns, so aside from learning the basics and beginner level skills, learning footwork concepts build you up and set you up for success

    I'm 6ft tall and CAN do the peekaboo somewhat effectively. The problem is that if I could do it all over again, I wouldn't do this BS.
    I essentially use the peekaboo as a pocket counter to infighters. I'm 6ft tall and can cut to 51kg easy. EVERYONE is an infighter when they box me. So I learned a dedicated infighting style so I can meet someone at the phonebooth and out-infight them in short bursts so I can go back to popping a never ending barrage of throwaway jabs with a few left and right straights behind said jabs while dancing around the ring. Plop in the occasional long hooks and uppers and that's me.
    I'd be so much better if I didn't learn that peekaboo BS. The input to output sucks. The only dude I know that made it work was a short and stocky guy that was perfect for it. Slipping and ducking was effortless for him because he was so close tomtue ground with his stubby legs so he could do it all day.
    TLDR: you're not advanced enough to learn peekaboo and if you are, it probably isn't the style for you either

    • @peekabooboxingacademy
      @peekabooboxingacademy  3 місяці тому +11

      @@juhel5531 You don’t do the peekaboo style. What you and the other tens of thousands of people out there are doing is mimicking Mike Tyson. The peekaboo style is a system created by Cus D’amato.
      You have to come to the gym to properly learn it and do it. You don’t need to be advanced. You just need to learn it properly. The reason so many people fail at it is because they’re trying to copy Mike. That doesn’t work.

    • @juhel5531

      @@peekabooboxingacademy use your slips and ducks like feints. Be defensively responsible, always. Never forget to pop a quick hook or jab even close in just to get that first hit in. Use head movement to realign your body to your opponent to open up holes and then throw fast hooks and uppers up close in rapid sequence. Pop the full commitment power shot every so often to force your opponent to respect your tiptap setup combos. Mix up angles even harder with shifting left and right. Mix up even harder by combining the shifting with just taking a step forward/backwards with your rear leg to mixup even harder.
      Also, using said angles so your hooks and uppercuts can sort of follow through like a straight. You're essentially doing the infighters equivalent to fancy footwork to create angles. The smaller the movements and adjustments the better, stay tight and focus on racking up a lot of those tight and quick taps. The openings for those tight hooks or uppercuts the you turn into a straight is decided when your opponent makes a mistake.

      @FRoques 2 місяці тому +1

      The peek-a-boo is more useful for shorter guys because it involves a lot of footwork, dodging, diving and infighting. At 51kg, 6ft is ridiculously tall, if I was you I'd simply be sniping everybody down with the reach advantage, not letting them anywhere near you.

      The style has to do with your personality too, your mind. These natural instincts is what determine if you're a infighter, outboxer, brawler and etc. So the style would serve well as complement of your personality and physique.

      Sorry to say none will boxing has evolved dramatically and a lot of kids are taught to use the jab more and change defense often on top of the fact that most coaches in this era (unlike mikes) believe in strength and conditioning which means faster, stronger, and harder opponents then back in the day. Mike was kinda like a lightning in a bottle, and even then, he wasn't in the top 20. My suggestion to you would be to take what you like and what works and integrate what you can into your sparring session, but don't make it your "style" make your own way.

      Probably not, you’re better off learning a different style. This style was quite literally only built for Mike Tyson. Also Mike was doing this for years since he was like 12-13. Repeatedly slipping punches, slip bags, mitts, more times than we can count. Also this style is very taxing. You need crazy amount of cardio which is something Mike had. He was a 200+ pound man running 5 miles everyday. Most skinny people can’t even do that. Look at Isaac Pitbull Cruz. He has a similar style but it’s not a constant slip slip. He’s a pressure fighter with a high guard. I guess you can look a that.
