Meet the U.S. Students Studying Medicine For Free in Cuba

- BT’s Rania Khalek paid a visit to the Latin American School of Medicine in Havana, also known as ELAM. Cuba’s socialist government foots the bill for students, who come from all over the world to study medicine for free. Tuition, accommodation and board are all covered. Cuba even throws in a government stipend for students to live on. The one condition? Graduates have to return to serve in low-income communities.
A testament to Cuba's commitment to internationalism, ELAM is one of the largest medical schools in the world, with tens of thousands of students enrolling in a given year from over 100 countries.
During her visit to the campus, Rania had the chance to catch up with current 2nd year medical students from the U.S., and asked them about their experiences studying in Cuba. - Розваги

I dont know for other countries but for us it is a mutual agreement between the cuban government and ours..we send our application through the ministry of health in our country..you should do a research on how to apply in your own country

I applaud these young American students, who're clearly motivated to study and practice medicine by humanitarian rather than materialistic concerns. Huge respect for them AND for Cuba, for making this possible for students from all over the world.
This is what developing countries need. Preventative approach rather than a medical treatment. Kudos to Cuba!

I remember watching a lecture by Gabor Mate where he also mentions the healthcare system in the US and the West generally. He said something along the line "when was the last time your doctor asked you about your environment, your generall well being, your family?"
Seeing Cuban doctors have a different approach is very beautiful!
They do ask about that in mental healthcare, but that has its own problems.
"You're depressed because you're poor. You family issues are a result of generational poverty. Your fears and feelings (e.g. extreme distrust of police and other authorities) are completely rational given your situation and experiences, but we're gonna pathologize it anyway. That'll be $200"

I must say that our family doctor do ask these questions. She's a wonderful doctor, asks about my children, their schools, their interest, etc. We have that bond where we have great conversations about family and life. I'm one of the lucky ones.

This is encouraging. I got my Premed degree in 2015 but didn't apply to Medical school, because of finances. I will apply to medical school in Cuba now. My Grandfather is from Cuba.

After independence from European colonialism, a lot of doctors from East Africa and Southern African countries got their education in Cuba for free.

@@alfredoalcantar8691 Cuba was not the only country offering free education. The former Soviet union and China also did OFFERED free education for doctors, engineers and architect's. Some of my relatives benefited from this. The only challenge was learning Russian or Chinese in order to enroll in to their universities

There are many humble American physicians.
Socialised medicine is very much based on whats good for the patient. In the US there's always the money element which encourages unnecessary treatment because there's money to be made. My sister inlaw who's a nurse in the US told me doctors will phone the insurance company before going ahead with treatment. Its against the law because they're supposed to treat people on the basis of need, but they do it anyway..

I visited Cuba and loved the people and rich culture there. The blockade is saddening. They are a strong, resilient and beautiful people. There is little to no crime there. If I were younger, I would definitely apply to medical school in Cuba. Im beyond the age requirement and will apply to other schools. I will visit Cuba again one day.
This video should be shown in every high school and college to let young people know that there are alternatives to the corporate US university system.

I had the privilege of visiting Cuba last month and was so inspired by what i saw and learned there. Watching this video brought tears to my eyes.

@@Duck-wc9de Cuba is a small island that has been under world-wide US-initiated trade blockade for 70 years. Its last big trade partner was the USSR, which supplied vital materials. When it fell, Cuba was left with nothing. No petrol, no steel, no copper, no concrete, no food, no medicine, no textile, NOTHING could get in or out of Cuba. Can you imagine what would happen if it was your own country that was sanctioned like that? You would also lose all of the things you can do without, and some more.
Unsurprisingly (and completely by design), quality of life in Cuba plummeted in the 90's, and many people left (also by design). There were times when all one could get was rice and sugar. Yet even in the bleakest of times, when there weren't even fresh bandages, healthcare stayed free for everyone, and to this day it remains one of the best in the world, despite the sanction-induced shortages.
P. S. Cuba is a democracy. You may not be able to recognize it because it has more than 2 parties, but it's a democracy all the same.
They came to my country during COVID-19 crisis. People love them because they do their best to learn the culture and language to ingratiate themselves. They make the whole process comfortable to our locals who normally have a phobia of hospitals and medical workers.

I know dozens of Cuban doctors and a lot of the books they have are translated from English to Spanish. Same books that I used when I studied at medical school. Meaning that the education is not limited by language or geopolitical influences. Cuban doctors are very good indeed as I have worked closely with them. They are as rigorous in their thought process as a physician as any well trained physician out there. Moreover at some point in time these students were also able to have part of their training in the Soviet Union. There are of course palpable limitations to the current infrastructure. But money and access to resources are still unable to limit the purity and the thought process of these physicians I am honestly proud of having collaborated with them in the academic setting and in the clinical environment.

Cuba should collaborate more now with China and Russia. What has the USA gained by imposing sanctions and trade embargoes on Cuba since the 1960s
China, yes. Russia, no (or, at least, only in a limited capacity). Even if it's not as bad the US empire, current Russia is very much capitalistic and has fascist tendencies, it's no Soviet Union.
While I'm against Imperialism with Russia, Cuba and China are currently the only communist represented nations that should collab along with Vietnam and Laos, Russia is not Communist or Socialist by any means anymore. So no Cuba should not work with Russia on that end, as they gave up the Soviet Union. Russia should've been patient with reforms rather than give up the USSR, then you can say this.

Besides, Cuba would seem like paradise for many poor people, from Mexico or elsewhere. I get that it doesn't feel that way to you, with the enduring shortages, but good healthcare, a social safety net and above all, a free education of such high quality is more than the vast, vast majority of people get. Not even people in rich countries like America, England, Germany etc. could dream of getting a doctor's degree for free as a foreigner, with room and board paid for.

omgggg i remember hearing about ELAM back in 2008-2009 and following some people’s stories. i was premed at the time. i graduated years ago and went into software engineering instead but this just unlocked very fond memories. i’m glad people are still going through the program. i dreamt of attending elam

I went to a restaurant in La Habana, extremely fancy. Guess who I ran into there? Fidel Castro 's son, I didn't know that it was him. I love babies so I started playing with his one year old, turns out he was Fidel' s grandson.
I am not a Cuban but I spent 6-7 years there. A great deal of my identity has been formed by the island. I love Cubans. The issue isn't just the U. S though. Do you guys know what MLC is? I also gave birth in Cuba.

I knew about medical schools and the state of medical science in Cuba, however, I was not aware that everything was free. I also know that the medical education is extremely expensive in America.
According to Aristotle: Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all. Especially in the field of medicine, a medical doctor's primary concern is to help the patient without regard to financial motivation. One must believe in this, and life is so beautiful when you have a vision and you see yourself useful to humanity it gives one a deep spiritual fulfillment that nothing else can replace. Unfortunately, American system of education especially in the field of health and medicine totally lacks this goal.

They're lying; there's no such thing as free. My parents are Cuban & were never allow to attend "free schools"
You have to sign a contract before you start school as a foreigner that you identify as a Communist & will have to do TWO years of free labor, after graduating.
If you're already a Cuban, you need to have a strong Communist family record to even enroll in "free" college.
Most medications and supplies in Cuba, now cause bidding wars anyway.
After the USSR collapsed Cuba, started allowing its people to accept & carry foreign money.
Most doctors in Cuba, won't even give you their last supply of medicine unless you pay them in U.S dollars or in expensive gifts.

There needs to be a comprehensive movement here in the states to get the blockade lifted. Its an act of evil that we as Americans need to wholly reject. Lift the blockade!
Embargo doesn't apply to all countries, companies
The U.S. has maintained a comprehensive economic embargo on Cuba since the 1960s, preventing most American companies from doing business on the island and vice versa. The sanctions do not force other countries and non-U.S. companies.
To add to what Alfredo said. Cuba has import more food and medicine from US than from any other country. Also go and learn the reason of that embargo and the conditions for it to be lifted. Please educate yourself before making opinions that can be taken as true by other people

Yes. I know of 4 doctor graduates from Cuba. The best in the world and very passionate about medicine. American Healthcare kills its patients to make space for finance and lighten loads not care the best it can. Even if you as a patient have the best health insurance in America it would get to a time when they decide if you live or die and which is financially benefitial for them as a Healthcare system. Please expose more and thanks for the coverage in Cuba.
These students are speaking like the ones from years ago they care more about their patients than the money yes some do change but some remains humble thank God for Cuba
I have a niece studying in Cuba from Belize to be a pathologist, 2023 is her last year, she learned Spanish in 6 months, she speaks it fluently now...

I've always been told that a Cuban medical degree doesn't have any standing in the US. They basically have to translate their transcripts to validate them and still have to go back to school and perform residency in the states before they let you practice. Hopefully, since they are from the states and they were approved to go there, they won't have to deal with transcript issues and they let them practice without any barriers. Damn, would I love to see these four doctors-in-training go before Congress and answer the very same questions that sister Rania so brilliantly asked. The only topic that was not really raised was, "How does this medical training stack up against what an MD trainee would get at a US medical school?" It's almost certain that the US schools would sneer at the quality of training in Cuba on technical grounds. Will these doctors' Cuban credentials be recognized and accepted in the US? Must they sit for the the United States Medical Licensing Exam, or USMLE like doctors trained in other countries? What is their USMLE success rate? Thank you so much, Rania!
American doctors have the lower success and efficacy for their patients. Their patients are the most unhealthy and the least educated(about their health) patients compared to their Cuban counterparts. It is a fact that Cuba provides more doctors to the developing world than all G8 countries combine. Cuba's infectious disease program is arguably the best in the world. Cuba is 95% vaccinated. So I'm not sure what American MDs would actually be able to sneer about. Lastly America battles with Mexico as most obese country. And most chronic diseases like diabetes linked to being overweight.
These students have to take US exams when they get back. So far there s a very high number who ace those exams !
The process of taking the USMLE exams and applying for the residency programs for the junior doctors are the same wether they graduated from Cuba or UK, Germany, Japan, Burundi, etc…
The process if fair and equal for everyone.. The success depend how well you do on those exams, and generally the Cuban graduates do very well!
That will depend on what you define as 'quality'. Is is the number of patients attended to or actual amount of effort spent on difficult cases

My Bahamian bestie went to Cuba to study medicine. I went to medical school, and learned that Cuba is actually one of the best healthcare systems. They have a vaccine for lung cancer enough said. They were right. We treat Cuba prevents. I love it 🥰

Worked with a Cuban MD in Belize, CA. She was amazing.
I can certainly testify that greatest service to the people I have ever witnessed was when I had to go to the hospital in Havana , Cuba. The introduced himself as Juarez and immediately went to work. I felt he was individually concerned about the problem. As a matter of fact, I only had to present my Passport as identification, it was recorded and in less than 2 minutes, the doctor was getting an assessment from me and then on to solution.
They have more doctors per capita than any other country and every citizen has a doctor. Cuba produces the most excellent of doctors in the world in my assessment which is more more of a calculated sum than an opinion.
