  • Only a small fraction of those who enter college as pre-med even apply to medical school, and of those that apply, only 40% get in. Statistically speaking, if you’re pre-med, the odds are not in your favor. Why is that and what can you do about it? Let’s find out.

    This was really eye-opening 👀
I was pre-med because my dad encouraged me to become a doctor.
The respect, prestige and financial income was desirable 🤔
Originally I had planned to become a pediatrician because I enjoyed being a babysitter and wanted to help sick kids.
After graduating with my Bachelors in Biology and minor in Science, I took a course to help me study for the MCATs, and stayed after class with my friend to talk to medical school students (who taught the courses) about how med school was.
I noticed that there were too many restrictions from medical school to residency, and completion of residency to start working as an MD. It was going to take WAY longer than anticipated, and what if I didn’t like my specialty? I have to report to the Board?!
I decided to research other career paths like Physician Assistant & Clinical Microbiological Researcher, and pray about how to move forward.
Fast-forward 3 years later, I graduated with my Masters in Clinical Medical Science and Physician Assistant certification with less debt and I’’m still able to practice with similar responsibilities to a medical doctor. I’ve already practiced in Surgery, Wound Care, Family Practice, Internal Medicine, and Functional Medicine 😎

    • @ConstantineIII
      @ConstantineIII Рік тому +6

I'm starting med school this fall but I will 100% confirm what Clarissa said here. Being a PA is a WAY better deal than being an MD/DO. Less debt, you get to do a lot of the same stuff a doctor does, and a significantly shorter education path. If you like medicine and want to make decisions but it's not going to be your whole entire world, go be a PA. It's a sweet deal!

I have been a physician for more than 9 years. Been a PA is very different and far less desirable from been a physician. My parents pushed me to be a physician and I haven’t regretted it also. It’s very rewarding and I am glad I listened to them.

I got a 30% on a Physics. It made me feel sad but I remember I have an immigrant girlfriend who I plan to make my wife take care of. We met in hs and stayed together ever since. Her dad had cancer and I worked in their business to help them through. She experiences all the hardships of being an immigrant and thats what pushes me. If I ever lose hope in myself or feel burned out I look her in the eyes before I say my thoughts out loud. What stares back is a reminder of who I need to work hard for. To take care of her and people in a similar situation. The hardships she faces inspires me and pushes me to keep going because failure is not an option. If I give up it is not only giving up on her but so many others I could have taken care of.

We had a sub in high school (he was a alumni from school) who graduated with honors from UCB, got a high paying job straight out of college at a Fortune 500 company....well when he was nearly 30 he said “Fck this. I hate this. I’m going to med school” so he did just that. Took MCAT, and at 32 he started his med school journey.

Class of 2018 here. I haven’t done a single semester of college. I went for about 8 weeks and dropped out with withdrawals Spring 2020 because I felt like I wasn’t going to make acceptable grades for medical school. Starting college new 2021 Spring for Biology pre-med.
I’ve tried seeing myself as anything but a physician and I just can’t. Working as a phlebotomist for almost 2 years has lead me to meet many people in healthcare including different types of doctors. I’m not gifted intellectually but that’s the life I want to work hard for.
This time around will be different for me. Maturity and reality hit me. I see it as a revenge tour. I don’t care that I started late but this is personal. Idk if anyone read this but I hope if you’re in a similar spot you keep fighting and aim for your dreams.

During my freshman year biology course years ago, every third person you met was a “bio major pre-med”. It was actually pretty comical how many people proudly introduced themselves as a premed like they were some kind of hotshot. After the first exam when the class average was a 76, almost all the premed students I met dropped the track by the end of the semester. None of the premeds I met that semester even ended up submitting an application. It’s quite comical how most freshman have no idea what it is like to go down the medical route. That’s why I stopped telling people I was premed at the time. I actually ended up going the dentistry route instead because I think it’s way more fun being a dentist and something I enjoy a lot more.

As someone the started as Pre-med, switched to Chemistry, and finally wound up going for PT, it honestly matters at where your aspirations and comprehension of material lies. Organic chemistry is a really complicated course if you aren't willing to put in the work to understand it, and even then you might not even have good enough of teachers guiding you. I had to retake the course a 2nd time to finally get a B (thank you for helping me Dr.Adityah).
There are other forms sciences, medicines, and treatments on the rise and each one is has a growing market; PT is something that will inevitably become more needed as the population of older individuals increases. The average lifespan is increasing, our bodies continuously fall apart/decay, and the amount of care for outpatient therapies will become increasingly more important.

I’m in high school right now and the friends that I’m closest to are filipinos who are either surround by all male siblings , the youngest and have siblings almost 10 years older than them and have graduated, or have parents who had them later on in life an are on the stricter side and have higher expectations. It was definitely a shock seeing how different my friends were from I when it comes to studying and how they though. Like most parents they have expectations for their children and want the best for them. An although my friends parents would be okay with them choosing their own area of studying in the future most of them prefer them to become doctors. It was definitely hard to watch how my friends put lots of pressure on themselves and their studies. Though I love my friends and they are very kind I lost lots of self esteem and confidence when comparing myself to them as I’ve always felt as though I was not as intelligent or hard working as them. Lots of the time , the pressure put on children to have a future job that is consider to be high paying and for the intelligent like doctors is because of all the struggles and hardships their parents when to or how they grew up. The stereotypes that come with being Asian students are not always true as them seem. But yes some asians are expected to become doctors and are smart , however from experience I learnt that it’s mainly due to how much time they spend studying. Even though I can’t say I fully understand why or how the Asian culture works , over the years I have come to babe an Idea of the rights , wrongs , expected , unexpected, and more.

Firstly, I want to be a nurse. Not a doctor. But the whole idea of travel nursing is so appealing to me. The freedom and control you get is something that is unparalleled. Don’t go into medicine purely because of your parents. They’re not going to be the ones who will have to experience all of the struggles and hardships of becoming a physician, let alone actually working as one. More likely than not, you will spend most of your life working at your job. If you dislike your occupation, you will not be satisfied with your life. Of course money and prestige matter a lot, but as the old saying goes, “it’s better to be the head of a cat rather than the tail of a lion”.
