  • Imagine being told that because you have mental illness, you should drop out Yale Law school and spend your life in institutions or perhaps, at best, doing menial labor. Then imagine going on to becoming a law professor, writing a best-selling book, and winning a McArthur Fellows "Genuis Grant". That's exactly what happened to Elyn Saks, who was first hospitalized with schizophrenia at 21. Elyn had a hunch she wasn't the only high achiever coping with schizophrenia, and she set out to find other people like herself.
In this interview with Liz Habib August 23, 2012, on Studio 11L.A. Elyn talks about her study into high functioning schizophrenics, and her own journey. Elyn is author of "The Center Cannot Hold: My Journey Through Madness"

I have been diagnosed with schizophrenia, I am struggling thru college at the age of 37 but I am making it. It was when I was on the cusp of quitting when I googled successful schizophrenics. I came across this. Thanks for coming out and sharing it really impacted how I feel about being successful. Thank you. Oh, and I graduate in May!

Functional paranoid schizo here! I take care of my grand father and make punk and heavy metal jackets and vests, I haven't had a helucination since I was let out of the hospital 5 or so years ago, I do have problems with time. I had anxiety but now I've been lifting weights for almost 2 years and have very little anxiety

I'm a high functioning person with schizoaffective disorder "depressive type." I believe they misdiagnosed me my 4th time (within a year) at inpatient. I believe I have bipolar type.
Anyways, I struggle with working a full-time job, as I lose energy so fast that I just want to lay down. If I go to work in this state, dread, and anxiety kick in (I suffer in silence, a lot actually). My mom doesn't even think I have the disorder, claiming the doctors gave her baby the wrong diagnosis (I'm almost 25).... almost slapped her. Props to you, miss, for being able to overcome your disorder.

That’s fucking crazy! I walked for no reason a few times. One time I just walked into the middle of the road and just laid there right on the double lines separating opposing traffic. This was so long ago, I can’t remember why I did it. I’ve seen peoples faces transform into demons, I’ve heard voices and when I was a child, it was mainly a man’s voice, very sinister or multiple people speaking to me at the same time and getting overwhelmed when they’re all talking to me. It drives me nuts when they get so loud and I can’t hear my own thoughts.

she says she had psychoanalysis therapy 5 days a week. since she is educated about such matters, i will accept that she is accurate and she is undergoing Freudian psychoanalysis. however, the gold standard today is not psychoanalysis, it's CBT, cognitive behavioral therapy.

i realize that the original comment above is 8 years old, but i don't think it is helpful for this misinformation to be unchallenged for one minute, let along 8 long years. so here is my response to winstono75:
perhaps your grandiosity is part of your problem. if you need a smarter psychiatrist, go out and find one and then hire him or her. P.S. "was" is the wrong word. the wording should be "If my psychiatrist *were* as smart as me, i would be fine." you're busted!

The key takeaway for me was that she needs and gets 5-day a week psychotherapy. Talk about accommodation. If only more people suffering from such conditions could be given that same amount of grace.

Do you know that they are screwing with your mind elyn? Sometimes we don't do we. You couldn't really know if they didn't tell you huh. You'd just be randomly hallucinating for all that you know.
You've run into some pretty bad dudes elyn. They can do some very bad things to the mind to. I would know.
