Thanks for the video! I was the one who asked how the trays were made. I didn't think it would be such a complicated process. The resin part seems daunting but probably the cutting of the wood would be the hardest part to me (and probably the most dangerous 😅)
You are welcome for the video and it was a great suggestion. If cutting the wood would be to hard you can always look for a local lumber yard or wood shop. They would be more than happy to cut the tops off for a small fee. Especially if you are only making a few it would not be that costly. The resin is just something you have to learn but it is not that hard. Mix up a few small batches and pour it. You will be amazed how easy it really is to do a simple pour. I really hope you make a tray it is a lot of fun.
Those trays are actually pretty kewl. I work with wood and leather, and I’ve made some nice dice trays for myself when playing solo. But I’ve noticed that when dice are rolled on leather (my dice trays have custom carved-leather bottoms), they don’t tumble around as much. Almost like there is a bit less randomness. But when I drop my dice from about 2” or 3” inches onto my hard office table, I notice that they tumble and spin much more, hence giving me a bit more randomness. (Well, at least in my mind it seems like it does). So I’ve been considering placing clear glass on the bottom of my leather dice trays. But now that I saw your video, I’m considering making them with an acrylic base. Interesting. In closing, have you tried printing photos on glossy photographic-style paper? This may help. Your printer should have the settings for the type of paper used, and also the quality of printing. (If it’s a photograph on photographic paper). And very lastly, use a stain primer in your wood BEFORE laying down the stain. Look it up. Anyhoo…kewl video…from another solo RPGer.
Thank you for comment on the video and I am glad it gave you something to consider with your dice trays. I will have to look up the wood primer I have never heard of that before. I will have to also try photo paper on a project in the future. Right now I just have a lot of art from my collection to keep my busy. Again thank you for the suggestions have a great day.
@@solitaryrpg I cannot express how much I would love that! My email is in the info on my page or if there is a better way for us to chat, let me know and I'll make it happen! @@AdventuresWithDice I will send you that dice tray that I featured in the video. I have a smaller image that I want to make another dice tray out of. I will send you an emial.
Thanks for taking the time to make this. That was a very clear and well explained how-to video. It really took some of the uncertainty I had with using epoxy away too. Your video makes it seem much more approachable than I thought I would be. I appreciate the detail you went into for beginners. (It's good to know how high you made the walls and stuff.) I want to try making one of these but I think my wife might kill me with the clickety clack of the dice on the hard surface. My work around idea is to buy a clear silicone mat and cut it to shape to stick in the bottom. Do you think that would work ok to reduce the sound or is the sound even an issue? Super nice Dice trays btw!
If you can find a clear silicone mat and can cut it nicely it would work. You might not want to cut the top off the tray and leave the 4 inch sides. The mat might give too much bounce to the dice and than you will spend all your time picking them up. You might want to experiment with a much thinner coat of resin to reduce the sound and place the silicone mat under the tray. The thin bottom is secured just make sure you don't use it to hold anything heavy.

Just last night, no kidding, I thought about making my own dice tray. Excellent timing and thank you!

@@solitaryrpg Correction: “Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner”.
They come in small 8 fl oz containers. Relatively cheap.
@@RaymondMillbrae That makes more sense. All the primers I saw were not clear. I will look up conditioner thanks for the correction.
Fantastic video! And... If you ever want to make another Dragonbane dice tray and "Trade" it for some green pieces of paper, let me know!
I would be more than happy to make you one for your channel.

Do you think an image printed on photo paper would work okay?
Edit: Also, this is an awesome tutorial, thank you!
I don't know I have not tried that type of paper. Maybe on a future project I will give it a try and see what happens. Thank you for the suggestion.
Not sure if u noticed but your missing a finger on the right hand
Am I missing a finger or do you have too many. Yes I lost my finger back in 72.
@@solitaryrpg Haha! 🤣 Was it a fan belt on a truck? That's how my dad lost his
@@shanesmith7672 No not that exciting. I was two and put my finger in the sprocket of a bicycle and I learned never to do that again.
