What a great game for solo!
I have been playing it and so far it has been great.
The whole package of Tales of Argosa is fantastic! Thanks for the shout out, you are one of the brave who would admit knowing me! 😂
LOL you are the best sir keep up all the great work.
In the manual and Dized tutorial, the back ( pointy tentacle) decide Shambler placement . Thank you for the video!!
Dude thank you so much for this video! Great to see some of the mechanics you like :DD The dice are actually etched acrylic from Q Workshop (naturally I think they're nice!). There will be the wooden ones available via Gamecrafter at the end of this month (like in the prototype video), but they are quite expensive (making on demand custom dice just isn't cheap, even though I will be listing them "at cost" on Gamecrafter). The boxed set plan for late 2025 is actually a 2e style "setting" boxed set (like how they used to do Dark Sun, FR, etc boxed sets). For that possibly I could investigate at an alternate rune dice aesthetic, more "bone like" colours etc hmmm, food for thought. Looking forward to what you do next!
You put out a great product. I read the play test rules and the art was the main attraction. Now with the finished rules I am really happy with what you created. The dice are such a small concern and I just don't like that style dice and they just don't have the weight to them. It is just a personal preference and not a negative reflection of the end product. Maybe with the next KS you can try to work something in with "bone like" dice. That would be really fitting and add to the concept so much. I look forward to supporting your upcoming box set and can't wait to learn more about the world. Right now, I just saved a barbarian that was hanging in a tree from a snare trap and need to get her back to her tribe.
@@solitaryrpg Hehe those darn traps!! Cheers mate appreciate it
Thanks for the shoutout buddy!😊
The “roll the bones” mechanic looks fun! Curious how much the rest of the game has changed since the playtest.
It would be hard for me to say the formatting changed a lot and things got moved around. I do feel the final product turned out very nice and I can't wait to play it some more.
Are the player/old ones play mats the same size as the ones from other tiny epic games such as tiny epic zombies?
If you are talking about the card player mats they are the same size as the ones in Zombies.
Thanks!
I am waiting for my copy to come I am so excited. Looked over the rules many times and they are solid! the GM tools are some of the best you will find all clear and easy to read with how they done the boxes so things dont blend into each other. The simple charts/tips for how to use other systems adventures/monsters in this system from B/X to Shadowdark. All put into one book while still giving a basic setting and core rules. It is pretty insane tbh.
@@yagsipcc287 Agreed so much to offer. Just need to spread the word and get people excited about it.
@@solitaryrpg For sure. I know they talked about doing more for another KS starter set like you said plus other bits for returning people.
@ Some better dice would be great.
I’ve been looking at this over the last couple of days, and it looks very interesting, especially for the solo rules. I might hold off until the hard copy becomes available as £20 for a 200+ PDF is a bit much for me right now.
Yes that is a bit much for a PDF might as well pay the extra for the physical book.
First. 😏 Looks good, now I also have to check out the video to see if it actually is.
LOL congratulations on being first two gold to the winner.
At approx. 21:45, one of the player's tracks became accursed. You activated the GOO's power, but in my reading (and searching and re-reading) of the rules, you don't activate the GOO's power when a player track is accursed, only when a town madness track is accursed. I haven't played yet - just reading through the rules and watching the videos - so maybe I missed something in the rules?
When you go to a town location and draw tentacles due to shamblers your temperance track can become accursed. In the rule book they have the word accursed in bold print so I took that to mean follow the rules for things becoming accursed. When madness tentacles become accursed you place them on the shamblers mat and activate the GOO power. So my understanding is simply based on the fact that the word accursed is in bold print. I could be wrong. I hope this helps.
@@solitaryrpg Agree with @tteshera. The consequence for a temperament track being accursed is on page 12.
Correction, it's a game for 0 to 4 players! Ikr, wtf?!? There are instructions in the rule book for Zero player mode...let the game play itself, ftw!
@@dvangaal I call that the Wheel of Madness mode. Just spin the wheel and see what happens. I have not play that mode yet.
Thanks for putting these videos together - so much better than reading through the rules to start!
Thank You for watching and leaving a comment it means a lot. I agree, I will look for a video before reading the rule book so what I am reading makes more sense. Have a great day.
Adding this to my wishlist for my wife to buy me. I actually prefer Traveler sized notebook, and I use it for my Solo RPG (I mostly play on the go), but obviously my zines are A5 sized, so whatever I use need to fit them too. I also use the Field Notes D&D GM notebook that I have repurposed to write or print & tape Oracles, Tables, Rules, Hexmaps, etc. so… this should fit all three of those sizes. I currently use a 9”x6” cable organizer but it lols cheap. The cable organizers, however to let me carry a ton of pens. Great review! This helped, since I’m looking for solo rpg use, specifically.
@@ElShowDeJason glad to help it is a great journal cover and I have enjoyed using it. They are costly but if you can make it work for your gaming it is worth the cost.
Thanks for this video i only got the game a few days ago and this really helped 😊
@@hanorafarlow8324 I happy to help. My next video will dive into the expansion material and solo rules. Have a great time spinning the wheel of madness
I’m gonna try this

They're not mistakes, they're evolving house rules
@@ike_d5402 very true and I was still having fun and that is really all that matters
Sorry to add one more thing, but around 39:30 you move all 3 black tentacles to the discard mat. However, the rulebook (pg 12) says "Move THE Eldritch tentacle...", so I think you just move 1 and then resupply the town card with 1 from the general supply as long as there are any. This makes more sense anyway; why move 3 the first time and then only 1 each time after?
Thank you for pointing this out to me. Moving one does not seem much like a consequence for the Shamblers becoming accursed. Simply changing the work "the' to "an" would make that rule read a lot better. I will update this correction along with the other one you mentioned in the next video. By the time I am done with these videos I will have all the rules correct, lol.
Also, you seem to be pulling a lot of black tentacles. As your general supply is not in the picture I cannot be sure, but maybe you added more than 3 to the draw bag at the start of the game?
Nope just really bad luck drawing them from the bag.
Great video, very helpful in getting a good overview on the various actions. I believe your explanation on the Old One's power (around 27:50) is incorrect. Even tho it indeed says 'Move' on the card itself, according to the rulebook (page 23), the shambler is added from the Shambler mat, not from other town cards. I do like your explanation about amassing shamblers though 🙂
This is a rule I totally got wrong so I have been playing wrong this whole time. To me, moving and spawning are two different rules. Reading the appendix you are correct, I should be adding new Shamblers. I will also be adding this to my corrections in the video description. I might have to create a new video and take this one down. Just too many mistakes I might be doing mare harm than good.
Thank you for this great video! One small mistake I noticed: at 33:25 you placed the tentacle that you pulled for the Shambler onto the Town Card; according to the rules (page 13), it should go on your Player Mat.
@@MichaelFox-dr8nn thank you for letting me know. I made a few mistakes while recording, I will update the video description with a correction.
Great explanation!
Thanks it will help create some epic adventures.
Just got my copy and happy somebody already made videos about it explaining it all! Thank you, we might be able to play this tonight :)
Glad to help, just follow the steps for set up and keep the rules handy while you play. Just remember the one rule, have fun. If you make mistakes with the rules like I did just keep playing and having fun. After a few games you will be ready to add in the expansion material.
Thanks a lot
You are welcome hope it helps
Right On! Thank you for the awesome video.
@@JasonWashburn-y1z you are welcome and thank you for watching.
I believe when you complete a row or a column on the necronomicon mat, you take one chaos tentacle (from the completed row or column) and you put it in your discard mat and not on your player mat.
You are correct and I will update that in my last video. Thank you for letting me know.
@solitaryrpg Good sir I watched your video to clear up a couple of rules or my mistaks if you wish. Like the fight and the distribution of tentacles before the game starts. So I thank you more. Plus sorry but I found one more tiny mistake. When the chaos tentacles become asserted on your player's mat they go to general supply. The punishment is enough that you lose them 😊
@@ChrisHatzisSydney I appreciate you watching the video and bringing these mistakes to my attention. I will be updating the video description with corrections and I will be sharing those corrections in the next video. Thank you for helping and I hope you found the video helpful and entertaining.
@@solitaryrpg Oh I did and keep doing those videos. Also my apologies I haven't subscribed yet, but I will do it after this comment :)
@@ChrisHatzisSydney Thank you and I will keep making these videos. I am currently painting the Game of Thrones miniatures and when they are done that will be my next video. That one will have a heavy focus on how to store all the components. Have a great day. Mike
I thought that you'd put all the parts in the box, shake it really hard, then when you dump it on the table it comes out ready to play. That's how it should be, anyway.
@@ike_d5402 that is how you set up up hard mode.
@solitaryrpg ha ha
Thanks, it looks like an interesting game 🙂
thank you for watching and leaving a comment it means a lot to me.
How do you feel about spinners? I find them to be a big turnoff
@@ike_d5402 for this game it works because it is how you control Cthulhu and not any of the players actions. It can mess up the game area if you hot it too hard and that can get frustrating. That is why I like what they did with the game mat and cutting out a section for the spinner. I will talk more about that in the next video.
Ahhh... the nostalgia! Thanks for that. Great to see those covers and colors again. Brings back fond memories of searching these little treasures out in second hand book stores in NZ. Would love to own an old copy again just to leaf through it and look at the pictures.
Glad to take you back in time with this video. The original books are the best. I think they created an art book however it would not be the same. It is holding those original books and the yellowed paper. Such great times when life was simple.
@solitaryrpg Yes, it really was! No phones, and we didn't care. We made our own fun back then. Cheers
If THEY only knew
@@janedoe33785 it is a great manual.
I love Blood Bowl, but sadly no players around and not a game that seems proper to solo 😂. I do enjoy Battle Ball by MB for solo though and scratches the itch!
I don't play video games however BB is the one exception. I have it for my X-box 360 and it plays just like the real game and provides that solo experience. The reason I say that is because the computer cheats like you would not believe. For some reason it makes all it rolls while all you roll are skulls lol. It is a great game and even thou I don't get to play it as much I still like painting up teams and talking about it.
@solitaryrpg leave it to GW to cheat ya 🤣
@@RandomEncounterShow LOL cheating me out of my money
This looks like such a fun system! Thank you for showcasing it.
It is a fun system I hope you enjoy it.
Random recommendations tourist here. I am sure you get this question constantly and it must be annoying, but my insatiable curiosity still demands I ask it regardless, even though it is unrelated to RPGs... What's the story with your right index finger?
LOL you are the first to ask on UA-cam. The real story is not that exciting so I have made up a series of stories for different social moments. The truth is just a small child of 2 years and put it in a bicycle sprocket and now it is gone. Thanks for stopping by maybe you can stay and come up with creative stories on how I lost my finger.
@@solitaryrpg I was honestly kind of hoping something like that was the answer. Probably means you don't remember it happening and acclimatized to your specific hand configuration naturally during childhood. As for making up stories for losing one's fingers-the lathe or table saw work accident is always my favorite, even if one doesn't actually use said power tools. Just makes one seem more badass.
@@Maxie962 The story I tell the most has to do with my career. I am an Animal Control Officer and people ask me if I have ever been bitten. I hold up my missing finger and say, Once. It really starts a great conversation and I will leave them with that story. I lost it when I was so young there is no real emotional trauma around it. I am now using both hands for different things in life. I use my left hand for writing and eating but my right hand for physical activities like throwing or punching. you might have noticed that in my videos. I pick up the dice and roll them with my right hand naturally but I write left handed. Fun Facts
@@solitaryrpg Ooh... That's a good story. Perfect really. And yeah, I can definitely see how naturally and seamlessly you adapted. I actually really, really like the way you hold the die between your thumb and middle finger, even beyond being just a simple adaptation for an injury. It's cool.
@@Maxie962 Back in the 70's that was all we could do. When I was young I wanted to play bass guitar and people told me I would have to use a pick. Now I play all the time using my fingers. Just had to focus and develop my own style of playing. People can do amazing things if they put their minds towards it.
yet to play the updated version but i find it baffling that such a game doesn`t include ranged combat rules while including skills that enhance it. I talked to the guy wit some suggestions and he was super disinterested in discussing but he was super nice so there`s that. systems should be complete and houseruling should be an option not a necessity.
Agreed, I am going to approach this game like the author of Shadowdark. I will play it and add some simple house rules that add to the game and corrects some of the things missing. Than I will have a game I can call my own like players did back in the day.
I really look at this book set as a framework for my game, that's exactly what i wanted out of it. I think adventure modules are a great idea for it... I love the rogue-like crawl system, but a solid story driven adventure would be fun.
@@NojoysSideshow That is what I am leaning towards. Something like Keep on the Boarderlands. A bit of story and some key locations but enough to open space to explore. One of the best things about gaming is discovery and finding or creating new parts of the story.
In dragon bane the “Monsters” always hit. But, humanoid enemies attack the same way as player characters. To be fair, folks like you and myself-we play a lot of different game systems. It’s unrealistic to hold a person to a standard as though they should have an encyclopedic memorization of all the games they play!
@@DeadMarsh Thank you for understanding we are not perfect and just need to step up when we make a mistake. I will be spending more time with these rules for future games. They are fun to play.
Wondering if you actually finished this dungeon. I have started many of games, really wanting to love this, but I find the combat too brutal and question if it is even possible to get through a dungeon. I have been unable to do so. And yes one can tinker with the rules but at a certain point if you need to tinker too much….
@@GeekGamers01 I have not finished a dungeon in any of the games I played. Combat is brutal and I might have been making a mistake with the combat rules. I am going to do a follow up on this video next week to share more thoughts. I agree with you, if I tinker too much I might as well find another game to play.
The stamps are cool, but have you seen Hextml?
@@ike_d5402 No i have seen them. I will look them up.
Great playthrough as usual! I have printed this a few months ago and have kinda forgot about it already, thanks to this I remembered that one. Just a question though, in the rules it is said that the enemies do not roll for attack and only deal damage in response to attack roll failure of a PC or got counter attacked by an enemy. Should not that Death Knight only attack the wolf for a counterattack and did not do any normal attack to your Warrior since its overkill already?
Reading the rules again with what you have written I agree with what you are saying. You are only hit by a failed roll or counter attack. On a 5 or 6 the enemies do not get to attack back. I just naturally thought based on all the games that I play they would still get to attack back. It is in the initiative rules that gives better clarification. It states that the enemies only respond to the PC actions and don't roll for initiative. This will change the combat system and will be worth doing another video on. Thank you for the feedback it is really appreciated.
@@solitaryrpg Thanks! Another Playthrough for me to binge watch!
HeroQuest reference. SOLD.
@@ike_d5402 welcome to my life.
This is a cool game.
There is something about these simple games that allow you to get invested in the narrative. The rules don't get in the way and you can really invest your energy in the story and it unfolds. I watched your recent video on Tricube and will give that a run soon.
I've been playing this for the past 2 months as a full miniature game with dungeon tiles. Only things I've had to house rule is that each character gets 1 move (with 2d6) and 1 action. For combat, each turn the characters roll their pool of d6 vs. the defense pool of the target. Each success canceling an opposing success, the remaining hits count as points of damage. It's smooth and remains fairly balanced, yet surprisingly challenging. It scratches that "I need a good dungeon delve" vibe with my miniatures that I've tried to fill with a lot of these types of games with minimal effort. Highly recommend.
I am going to give your combat rules a run. They look like a great addition.
Hero Quest is always been such a Evergreen game. Played it for over 40 years at this point I suppose.... and still makes its way to the front of the table sometimes when my group just wants to roll dice.... not role play
I have all the new stuff for HQ and it is a great game to hack and slash your way to victory.
This looks very intriguing by allowing you to take ownership of your own game. I believe this has great potential for one’s own imagination with endless possibilities. Thanks for making this known.
I read the overland adventure book this morning and it will add to the gaming experience. It is a fun game and yes you can create some rules of your own to make it better.
I would of walked into that dungeon with a pack of wolfs. Haha!
That would be bad ass and make a great piece of art. Just standing at the entrance with some hungry wolves. That would also be a great album cover for a metal band.
Looks interesting- question- when does a book of tables and charts become a game? That’s like saying an “axe” is a log cabin. Roll dice- look at a chart- roll more dice- look at a different chart- I made the game myself- so a typewriter is a really book? Not wanting to sound mean- but if tables and charts are the really “the game” - why buy a new book of tables and charts? What’s unique about more tables and charts?
I have asked myself that question before when I was playing a lot of 4 Against Darkness. Am I playing a game or the mechanics of the rules. I have discovered that the tables and charts are the axe, the tools you need to create the game. It is up to you to create the vision and meaning of what those tools provide you. That is why I mentioned in the video to roll up everything on the charts and draw it out, than play the game so that you can put yourself in that spot and respond. So the typewriter is a book waiting to be written by someone that uses it. It is the tool you need to create the book based on your imagination. Thats all tables and charts are. I don't let them stop me from exploring my imagination. I just come up with better ways to use them so I don't break the immersion.
Great game. I just don't understand the lack of ranged combat rules 😅
That is what I like about this game. I can mess around and create my own rules for ranged combat. I have not read the overland book yet and there might be more rules about ranged combat in that book. If not than I would have to say that there is no counter attack when rolling a ranged weapon. So you hit on a 4-6. I
