"How did you allow it to happen" is 100% the wrong way to ask that question...
And “it was something you definitely did not want” wtf?!! This is pure ick.
Absolutely. That was an incredibly problematic way to address what happened. He seemed to immediately realize this, and back track, but I felt that he could have addressed this error more head-on. It was upsetting.
Yes, I think he stuffed up there. 🤷🏼♀️
Appalling question
That question blew my mind. What the actual F Kind of question was that??
I'll have 3 years sober, 10 years off heroin and it's these stories that keep me pushing foreword. Thank you so much for sharing your story!

I remember Catra from back in the day at the SF and SJ goth clubs. She was a bit older, and I was always in awe of how beautiful she was. Fast forward to today, and I see she's a million times more beautiful! Such a positive and inspirational soul.
Awe thank you so much ❤ I appreciate your comments ❤
I can't believe Mark said "how did you allow it to happen?" When she was talking about being molested. Shocking question.
The question for me is how was he allowed to live…lol molesters should be made to be sorry they touch another..but now this world is chaos…
I know! I thought the same thing!!!😮
Certainly could've worded that question better
Same here. Horrible thing to say to a victim, especially a child victim. I'm surprised to hear him say that...replayed to check I heard correctly.
Yea..🫣I think he can take that part out.... crazy🤪
Catra is a prime example of taking charge of your life and not playing the victim. So her new addiction is running. More power to her🥰
All she did was blame all the men in her life for being mentally and physically abusive. Maybe she should take some responsibility and accountability for her life choices.
@@Fapsahoyxshe doesn’t strike me as a “men bad” feminist.

Exactly!
He's pathetic
I agree, terrible 😢
Is Mark medicated or something? That seemed odd to hear from him...
Catra has since defended Mark here and explained that he didn't ask it in a judging way... He got judged however, and probably nobody would want to say sorry

Thank you ❤
Mark! Shocked at the questions you asked her as she was sharing her molestation story that happened when she was 9-10 yrs. old - "How did you allow it to happen?" and "It's something you definitely did not want?"
Thank you for saying this. I’m appalled.
Giving Mark the benefit of the doubt here, I think he meant to prompt her to describe the scenario. It's possible that they spoke prior to the interview and he just wanted to get her to describe the feelings and details of the abuse further. She didn't seem taken aback or offended by the questions, moreso engaged and willing to describe the situation to Mark and the viewers. At least, I hope that was the intention here.
@@Keenan-cz3ds Your hypothesis makes alot of sense actually. Mark is quite an empathetic and kind person in general so it’s probably better to give him the benefit of the doubt.
It was disturbing.
Thanks for that explanation, Keenan. And, I see Mark gave your comment a thumbs up, so it must have rung true to him. I've been a fan of the channel for years and I know Mark's intentions and heart is always in a good place. But, as an SA survivor, I gotta say, those were not good prompt questions. Maybe he could edit the questions out for the sake of other SA survivors in the audience and consider it a learning experience? Again, thanks for your response.
What a surprise to stumble upon this video.....I live in Fremont and would regularly see her running past my house...Though I never spoke to Catra, I always smiled knowing she was out in the world staying healthy and finding her joy....Thanks so much for taking the time to supply her backstory Mark!
“It was something you definitely did not want?” she was nine. Bear
I think he asked because there were several interviews of people who were abused as children who would think they wanted to be with that person.
I heard that too yikes
@@RCBOW1110 even if that were true that's no excuse to ask that. Like what point would you be making?

“How did you allow that to happen?” After hearing about her being molested when she was 9 years old??? 🙁
Mark didn't mean it that way.
She set him straight
@Mia-qt4th he is a professional interviewer with years of experience
He needs to do better
Yeah, that was a little cringy. But no one is 100% on all the time. I give him the benefit of the doubt.
@kare8502 i used to give him the benefit of the doubt. But after years it is bothersome to me. He isn't a bad person but he needs to behave better

What did I just hear Mark say??? How did she let that happen!?!?!?!?!
Yup. How did she allow it to happen.

In many other podcasts, Mark has consistently said two things:
A) He’s a one man band. He’s doing lighting, sound, video and Q & A.
B) He’s a professional photographer, not an interviewer.
So instead of lighting your hair on fire over words you heard said on the inter-web, and being offended when the lady hear clearly wasn't, get up and go help some people like Mark has.
@@AaronFromGuildford you have no idea what I do and who I help. Have a nice day, stranger on the internet.

Ok you can stop repeating this now. He’s been doing this job for years, hundreds if not thousands of hours interviewing sexual abuse victims. If he’s just a photographer and too uneducated to not know what he is saying - he needs to get off this platform. It’s dangerous and disgusting to blame victims of sexual assault.
Mark, you are giving it to us good with all of these videos. Thank you so much, and Happy Mother's Day to all the mom's in the commet section.💃💐
That's insane. My mother has ran around 40 marathons and I still don't know how she does it, she's 57.

Thank you both for this interview. As a nearly 50 year-old ultra-runner, I can definitely attest to the physical and spiritual healing powers of running and exercise. I first saw Catra interviewed maybe a decade ago on Bryant Gumbel's show, and she looks every bit as healthy and vibrant today. She embodies beautifully the quality of her own inspirational words.
I am 28 years old, I am a recovering drug addict, and I started running. That was (is) part of my healing. This video gives me so much hope and it’s almost a reflection of what my life can be if I continue sober. Thank you for sharing and giving me hope. I need hope.

I love her. So interesting, so upbeat, so confident, and has found her "thing" in life. Well-done, Catra!
Mark - WTF with asking her “how did you let this happen” when she’s talking about being molested at age 9?! Come TF on. And then when she explains you say “oh well that understandable then.” You aren’t being asked to judge whether it’s understandable. She was a vulnerable child. Do better. Jeezus.

Maybe. I googled Catra; no pictures of her in a tutu. From the interview, it seems she only does ultra marathons now.
Plus side of googling: she has a book on her life journey!

I kind of wish Mark wouldn’t have asked her how she allowed that to happen? He usually is more sensitive and not blaming the victim. I’m sure he didn’t realize how it sounded.

I am so sorry the interviewer asked you such disturbing questions about being molested AS A CHILD. Completely unacceptable.
15 minutes in and I can identify with so much already.. I am in long term recovery ( 13 years ) and found long distance running in 2020 and it has changed my life .. I am so inspired by women like Catra, the longer you run the more you learn about yourself and how to not react to all the ugliness and negativity in this world .
I have followed Catra since the days of her web blog before social media influencers. She is the real deal. So happy to see her interviewed here.

“Charlie’s in the freezer!” What a cruel gesture. Her brother was probably unaware of what he was doing, but as a person who adored animals as a child, that moment must have been a nightmare for her 💔
It was so sad my brother was younger than me and a jerk as a kid. He’s an amazing adult though 😀
This was one of the most inspiring interviews I’ve ever heard. Thank you!
I love these videos and please don’t attack me for saying this, but I got triggered when Mark asked her at 4:08 “how did you allow that to happen “ in the beginning of this interview. I am sure he didn’t mean it in that way, but I was abused in my late teens. She was only nine, so I imagine that she had much of a choice, or a way to really understand and defend herself. Other than that, great story- great interview- great way to show other addicts that there is hope for recovery, health, healing and happiness!
Like you said, Mark didn't mean it that way, guaranteed.
I thought the same, but I know that was not his intention
In many other podcasts, Mark has consistently said two things:
A) He’s a one man band. He’s doing lighting, sound, video and Q & A.
B) He’s a professional photographer, not an interviewer.
No, please don’t misunderstand… I was just pointing out something that seemed to just hit me the wrong way. Maybe it’s because of the subject matter. Maybe it’s because it’s Mother’s Day and I lost mine 6 years ago to cancer. Or maybe it’s just I’m just too damn sensitive!
@lisaanderson135 no, do not apologize. He was wrong with his two comments. Many people are upset with him.

Just rewatched the video. What a sweet lady, so cheerful and upbeat. Great interview, Mark, and what a difference from watching Rebecca scream and rant about what you should do and buy him while he’s falling off the stool, spitting, and picking his filthy feet, or overweight, illiterate prostitutes talk about how good looking they are.
I don’t miss Rebecca at all, and videos like this sure bring a better atmosphere to your channel. Catra is a breath of fresh air, cute as can be, in great shape, and not once played the victim or talked about how gorgeous she is!! What a refreshing video. Thanks for sharing. 😊
Sheesh Empathy defect?! Projection? "good looking" "gorgeous" "Baubles & Dolls"... hmm...
@@PortraitoftheArtistasanOldDog8 I have plenty of empathy, believe me, but there's a limit before I've had enough and can see when someone is taking advantage of anyone they can!

For anyone that doesn’t run, let me tell you that it’s also an addiction.
But mostly healthy and positive.
@@jaepcam You don't know that. Lots of people dump one addiction for another. For example, there is even a term for it when someone gives up alcohol for some other non-alcohol addiction, it's called being a "dry drunk." (My dad was one. Everyone said, "Good for you, turning your life around, doing all this healthy stuff." But we never saw him. We saw him no more than we did when he was drunk in the bar every night.)
@@lisahinton9682 That's why I said "mostly". Do you think drugs are as healthy as running? I'd rather deal with someone who has a running addiction than a drug or alcohol addiction.
And please stop stalking my posts, Lisy.
@@lisahinton9682there definitely is a thing called symptom substitution. In Catra’s case, she’s been drug free for YEARS now. The physical dependence on drugs is long gone. She has healthy habits now, as well as knowledge and maturity. I think the running as habit is fine for her.

So happy for you that you faced your challenges in life straight on and prevailed over them. I lived in Maine (until mid 20s), I signed up for a running class at USM. That was the BEST thing I ever did for my health, was taught how to run properly/safely. I got into it! Not like you but made a lot of friends and we ran in groups. It’s so crazy how many ways childhood sexual abuse can negatively affect your life. In my case I couldn’t get away from the person because it was my dad. You bottle everything up as long as you can but eventually you start to crack. I lasted till my mid 20’s, then one day I just broke down. 4:11 Do better Mark! “How did you allow this to happen?” Is he for real?! The most tone deaf thing you could say to a survivor of SA. Wow.just wow.
I thought the very same thing- did a double take and rewound - just wow.
Oh and here we see the same person vomiting the exact same thing. Still she hasnt read Catra's own comment defending Mark. And I assure you that she wont come back and apologize for her condemning words, spreading hate...
@@rdrenth it's not "spreading hate" dude. This is so fucking tone deaf. I've been scrolling for her comment and can't find it; there's NOTHING she can say in defense of that comment from mark that would make it more palletable, respectful, or anything productive to ask a victim of such things. It's performative at best and hateful towards victims at worse (and likely an example of how he really feels about people)
if you read all comments of shewas1984, then you maybe understand why I wrote 'spreading hate'

I love your story Catra! I've done 4 Ultra's and 14 Marathons. The endorphins from running keep me going. Keep kicking-ass, Catra!
What an amazing lady! 59 years old she looks unreal 😮❤
