I am a dog walker in Los Angeles. I regularly have to walk dogs that aren't trained well. Today I walked a dog ( one of my regulars) that is an extreme puller. I used your technique today for the first 10 minutes of our walk and the rest of our walk was not perfect but remarkably ( seriously.....a changed dog) smooth in comparison. I am thrilled to have learned this and am so grateful for your trainings!! The owner of the dog was shocked at how calm her pup was when we got back.

@@willathertoncaninetraining I've bought a failed border collie sheep dog and no matter what I try I can't get him to listen to me at all.
He has no social training at all.
He is 1 year old and a loving dog but taking him out is proving to be a handful obsessed with constant sniffing pulling and he has no recall at all could really do with some advice from yourself as me and my wife are constantly watching your videos but still getting nowhere with him.
He won't take a single treat while trying to guide him so tried the praise but nothing.

I am 72 years old and have owned GSD all my life but at this stage of the game realize I don't have the energy along with some health issues to own another GSD but in spite of that still like to learn as much as possible form a dog behaviorist such as yourself as you never know when another dog may find its way into your life and it's better to be prepared, crack on Will. @@jtucci5711 How did you do at the shelter? Another idea is there are lots of senior GSD's that need a forever home. I'm 61 with chronic pain and three months ago I adopted a 14 m/o Malinois (a three-decade dream realized), I also have a German Shorthaired Pointer, also adopted, he's almost four. These will likely be the last young dogs I take on, after which I'll take in seniors.
The slip lead and the changing direction has been absolute life saver for me and my 4 month old Newfoundland ! THANK YOU !! Love this channel!!

What do you do when they just don't move
Absolutely love all of your videos and appreciate your advice so much! I have a huge male black lab who was an extreme puller and he has caused damage to my arm and shoulder and even my hips multiple times! I actually considered giving up at one point and handing him over to someone who would be much better suited for him.
I’m a very active person and strength train 5 days/week! Yet I still found myself failing with my black lab! I started watching your videos and began putting your techniques into practice. And I am proud to say, I never surrendered my lab (thankfully because I can’t imagine how I’d have dealt with my own conscience doing so). Today, we walk with a loose leash and even in some environments, leash free! He never pulls; he looks to me for guidance; he automatically heals and sits if I stop; I reward him always because he thrives on the “pay me” system and I’m okay with that 😉 I am a far less anxious dog owner and he is a far less anxious dog now that I provide the guidance to him instead of him frantically searching for answers for both of us!

So happy for your success with your boy. I have a 6mo female black lab, nearly 50 pounds and starting her teenage testing. I'm a strong 77yr gal but realized on our last country road walk, I need to handle her reactivity when another dog runs down a driveway at us. Fingers crossed.
The direction changing is such a helpful tip. I was having problems with keeping my dog in heel with just pressure on the lead. I often found myself regressing to letting him lead because I didn't want him to think pressure was part of the walk not a correction. Your videos are so helpful!
I watched 3 of your videos about dog pulling on Friday night. Saturday I used this technique at the park and on Sunday when I took my dog for a walk it was amazing!

I'm a newer K9 handler with the police dept. We just purchased my on dog Sunday. He was had some training, but only as a working dog. We don't start our official school till April, so right now is rapport building. He's a great dog, easy going, but every walk was a bicep workout lol. I watched this video last night and used your techniques. Just in our 30 min walk I could see a change.

Appreciate how real you and your content is, I find it frustrating how many poor trainers are on youtube that people think are amazing and have massive followings and they just can't see that what they are doing is to get a reaction from the dog to get views. There are a few good ones though! Love that there is no BS with you!
My dogs aren't too bad on leash, but boot camp is forcing us to practice a lot. I got tired of the constant slight pull my young dog kept on the collar, and the 180's weren't working; then I suddenly realized they didn't know how to "yield to pressure", which is something you have to train horses to do. Last night we did a yielding session with treats. This mornings walk was close to perfect. When either dog drifted too far in the wrong direction, two fingers of pressure brought them back into position. I walk in the desert with lots of obstacles; being able to easily indicate left of the rock or right of the cactus eliminates the constant untangling of the leashes. This is loose leash walking, we also practice in heel position.

Brilliant, my 15 week old Cockerpoo now no longer pulls on her lead thanks to this video, even if she has someone walking in front of her.
She is constantly engaging with me while we walk along the roadside footpath & that's after 2 short training sessions.

Thanks Will- I use your methods and an easy walk lead and my Golden boy Bandit is now a good walker. For the first three years I despaired. Tried everything and the slip lead and the easy walk really made a huge difference along with direction changes and treats for reinforcement. Thanks for all you do to save dogs !
I recognize you can stop the pulling quite easily, but I would love to see the owner walk the dog after your session, in order to see if the dog has the same respect for him/her as it has for you being a stranger for the dog. My experience is that it is way harder to change the dogs behaviour as a dog owner than it is for a person the dog hasn't met before.

I have the same problem, dog has coded to misbehaveon leash when with us, she's generally very friendly and obedient with strangers and even at the dog park she checks in with strangers rather than us, it's kind of depressing coz we treat her like a princess lol.
Perhaps I should get a stranger to teach her leash walk!!!

@@adunzoroq33 because the dog thinks he owns you not the other way around. It's like a baby, if you spoil him/her, she will see you as a servant rather than a guardian.

I am so glad I found this video, just had my Golden pull me while trying to chase a cat. My shoulder hurts like hell & I got in the house feeling like such a failure. Found this, got the slip lead out & we’ll be working on this. She’s a sweet, lovely girl and she’s also very strong minded & excitable while outside on our walks. And I 100% know that any negative behaviors she has are all my fault. Thank you for putting these out.

Thanks for your tips I just picked up a German Shepherd from the shelter. She is one years old and is leash sensitive and pulls on the leash. And I tried your method and after an hour of doing what you did. She walks much better and more relaxed. Thank you for sharing your videos.
I've watched all sorts of training videos, even Caesar Milan's, but this is the only technique that is working for my puppy. Some other videos showed this type of technique but did not drill home the why, how, or what-to-do-ifs. Thanks so much!
My yr old Golden, who was born with cataracts, is reactive and pulls so badly on walks that she leaves my shoulders aching. She is a perfect walker in the morning, but mad in the afternoon. I've just received my Fenrir training lead and the first walk was 70% better. Immediately listening to command more, and less aggressive pulling. I have to perfect the flick of the lead, but thank you so much.

To teach yield, apply a very small amount of pressure at about 45 degrees to one side. When the dog cocks an ear, or turns their head a fraction of on inch in that direction, release, and praise with a treat. After a few tries mine started moving a foot in the direction of pressure, then a shoulder, then their whole body. We did it right, left, forward, and back.
The dogs you have look so calm on the videos, I'd love you to fix my lab for a video because he's an absolute nutter, lunging, barking, pulling....he'd be perfect for a video to show how good you are 👍
I'm a trainer we use similar methods, I work for free to prevent dogs from being destroyed, it good to see you doing the same.
It’s all about patients and when it’s your dog build a bond try in distraction free areas, don’t just go to a park and copy this if your dog doesn’t respect you , training is a lifetime thing with dogs, don’t force it and always end on a good note!!!

I love that this is about establishing clear and positive communication. Dogs are amazing team players and this technique seems to utilize their natural pack instinct combined with their bond to humans to get a happy, calm, thinking-mode dog

This video really helped me, my 9 month old pitbull terrier used to pull really bad, I do this tune up before we walk in the back yard, before walks, and she walks so responsively after only 5 days. Still a bit of trouble with squirrels but being bred for rodent hunting it's to be expected with the breed. Thanks for sharing these videos sir.

I really would like to see the owners walking this retriever right after and see the progression of the dog over time in order to have confidence in your approche. I urgently need to adopt an approach which will work for my strong, young dog both for pulling and for serious aggression towards other dogs.

My 10 month old ridgeback x lab won’t give me eye contact for engagement. I’ve only had her 10 days but she just doesn’t give eye contact. Any tips? Is she possibly grieving former owners?

Thank you for this video. I really appreciate your approach to training and certainly agree with you. I have had the great experience of owning a Border Collie GSD mix. Jezebel was an amazing girl who thrived from this type of training. She always knew I was in charge, through my constant feedback. I used voice, hand and eye input to follow me all of the time. As a herder, she was most comfortable observing the surroundings, always alert to my instructions. I'm now looking for a new dog, as Jezebel died in late May this year. I think treating a dog as a small child goes a long way to forming a loving, trusting relationship

I was glad to hear that a slip lead can fall down a bit so I know that it's something that just happens and can be corrected not necessarily that I'm doing something wrong. I am very keen to try the exercise with our very strong 18-month old black lab cross NZ Heading dog.

This was insanely quick. I am doing the perfect puppy course, however needed something else to stop my staffy from pulling on his leash whilst working through it. Within 5 mins he was walking behind me and looking at me. So simple but effective. I'll be doing this daily.

Got a black lab only 6months old but growing fast and started to pull really hard so much so that she starts choking and still pulls. Spent the last couple of weeks keep pulling her back to my side. This has no effect at all!!! Must have pulled her back hundreds of times. Tried this method today for first time. Normal collar. Have started to make progress already. The things that worked well was the 180 degree turn for no reason, and was saying “let’s go” to her and gave a firm tug on the lead. When she started pulling again, I just repeated the move. Also don’t go on a walk the dog knows, choose a random route and keep changing direction, otherwise they will think they know where to go and will try to lead the way. Make plenty of random turns. If she is say on the left and you turn left, Walk through her space don’t walk around her. Be very assertive, but not aggressive. Be calm and walk with confidence. If you cross the road, walk at 90 degrees across the road so she doesn’t know which way you are going to turn when you get to the other side. Keep her guessing so she has to look to you for instruction. After 20 mins of this my dog started looking at me more and more which she never has done before. I gave her praise and somethings a treat if she turned with me or paid attention to me. By the end of the walk she sometimes walked on a loose lead, sometimes pulled a bit but nowhere near like she did before. And she wasn’t pulling into grass and bushes to sniff out others dogs scent as much. Not perfect but a few more walks and I think we will be getting there. The biggest positive sign is when they keep glancing up at you. They are then giving up control to you. They will be happier in the long run with you in control. Thanks for this great video!!! 👍👍

@@RichQuintyn I'm not a professional but I would suggest building engagement in an environment with minimal distraction just to build the foundation of the dog engaging with you.

@@RichQuintyn I finally did it and bought a Herm Sprenger 2.25! After leaving it sat on the coffee table for about 2 weeks and continuing to be dragged around the block by my GSD whilst he barks at everything and anything that moves within a half mile radius, I decided tonight was the night I tried it… Leaving the house I had slight whimpers as I think he was a little unsure but by the end of the road (20 steps at most) he was walking like an absolute dream! By my side constantly and forever looking up to me for guidance. Only VERY slight corrections, literally a flick of the wrist, when he stopped to sniff and he soon fell back in line. When approaching other dogs and people I used to have to either cross the street and drag him away whilst he’s barking and lunging over the street or walk in a completely different direction before he spotted them, now just walks straight past people and DOGS! I honestly cannot get over the difference using this has done and wish I did it sooner, he enjoyed it so much more as did I. Could NOT recommend enough!
The direction changing and the right collar is the best correction for this.
Amazing transformation! I am wondering if this approach would be appropriate for a dog that pulls due to high prey drive (squirrels, bunnies, birds, chipmunks)? She’s always “on the hunt”! Which is something I know we also have to address separately. Anyways thanks for sharing the best content always!

Great instruction! We have a 2 year old gorgeous yellow lab that was trained to be a search and recovery dog who charges at squirrels. Only had him 2 months so far and we’re having challenges. I say he’s been institutionalized for the first 2 years of his life and doesn’t know how to behave in a family home yet. Pulls like crazy and is so strong. Please ANY suggestions?!!! Thx 🐾🐾

Love your videos, very informative. This is something I put into practice with my 1 year old lab and she responds great. I also have a stubborn 8 month old boxer who doesn't respond that well to this type of training his mind is racing constantly and seems to be on high alert, he pulls and darts all over the place. He's my second boxer, my first I had no issues training. Any suggestions for keeping his attention on me?
my dogs favorite treats(pizza) and my praising gets ignored when we are outside. she wont look at me or focus on me or the treats all. but your video helped me realize I was being impatient and wasn't stopping enough! and need to try to train her in a less distracting environment first

The Goldens here in the US can be pretty large. The biggest problem I have is not pulling, but rather laying down and not going. I have walked three Goldens that do this. Lovely dog.
