I’ve had a saijo for 15yrs now. I’ve tasted many types of persimmon (Asian and wild American, astringent and non-astringent) and the saijo is by far the best tasting.
WOW!!! I can't wait to see my persimmon trees produce. I've planted so many of them because I know when it first start to fruit, they will only produce very few. Thus, planting many will produce decent amount of fruits for me. When they start to produce in full abundant, I will definitely have too many, but that will be too many years down the road. I focus on short term production for me.
My three year-old grandson and I shared a Fuyu persimmon right off the tree as we sat on his swing set yesterday afternoon. Not quite ripe but still sweet as honey and crisp as an apple. Had to pick them a bit early because the deer have eaten pretty much all of my other fruit and the one ripe persimmon we had.
The purple ones ( I used to find growing wild) make decent wine. Just make sure you get the right kind of yeast. Deer love persimmons. So did my horses when I could still ride.
I brought one I planned first year it die after snowing and came back up again from the ground Now it growing very well about 4” tall now I hope two more years it harvest for me
Hi, Dan: we have two Fuyu, one 7, one 2 years old! They gave me tons of flowers but later only yield few fruits! But I saw a small persimmon tree may be only two years old down the street, in the shade no one take care it but bear so many persimmons, it makes me wondering if they have different variety from mine! You mentioned Jiro but you also said Fuyu, so I check with several nurseries and find out there are so many different varieties! I am totally lost! Would you be kind enough just tell me when and what you got your persimmon tree from please! Thanks a lot!
Hi Michelle, I purchased a Fuyu (Jiro) persimmon tree last weekend. It’s propagated by Dave Wilson Nursery here in Central California. This persimmon variety is non-astringent.
Thanks for sharing the video! I have a first year young persimmon tree but I have seen the leafs all curling with edges drying up (turning brown). I don't see any insects on the leafs. Do you know what could have caused the issue? Thank you!
How amazing! Dan in which zone are you located? I am in Eastern MA Zone 6 (or 7a due to the recent global warming). Fuyu/Jiro claims to be as hardy as Zone 7 not sure whether it may thrive in my garden?
I live in northwest florida and for many years my non-astringent fuyu did well. Then I noted diseased areas about the bases of where branching occurred. It appears to be the f, Botrysphaeria dothidia and with time it kills persimmons tending to bother the non-astringent more than the asian astringent varieties. I do not know know personally what it does to Jiro. My point is you should mention your zone when recommending what works for you and discuss disease. In colder zones for asian persimmon there is also a die off disease that is associated with extremely hard freezes. So that also needs to be considered. The old tyme favorite for the deep south is Saijo that I have and I have had real good luck with Hao River another astringent. Since this disease affliction
FYI - A plant that produces fruit without seeds or pollination is called parthenocarpic. This is different from plants that self-pollinate, i.e. clone themselves by seed.
Very nice u have alot of land space I am in NY Queens I have a nice size back yard I look forward to my gardening every year a good while now I have been thinking about having a fruit tree in the back not so big not much care when it comes to the tree and lots of fruits in the end
@@dalexfilms I did! It is 2 years later now and that tree probably has several dozen fruit on it this year. It started out with hundreds… it self-thinned its own fruit… and now has several dozen. The leaves even survived the Japanese beetles.
I have a fuyu in a pot that I plan to plant this next spring. I read online that having two varieties increases the flavor with cross pollination. Is that true?
For asian persimmon, they will often produce without pollination. Pollinated asian persimmon will often have seeds. I never really understood the topic well for persimmons since it is complicated
The fuyu tree we had tasted delicious! All ripen on the tree into the winter even when slightly frozen. Rich sweetness, kind of light honey mixed with apricot, creamy. It’s super sweet and messy.
I wonder if it is really self-pollinating or rather should be called a parthenogenic variety. Besides, I wonder, what are the coldest frosts you get, do you get any spring frosts? A frost of minus 7 °C in springtime killed my chocolate persimmon tree.
Hi. I find your advice very useful, but I would like to know in which agricultural zone your garden is in order to know if what you suggest applies to me. I am in zone 5b.
My neighbor across the street has a tree full of persimmons, just hanging there. First frost has passed, leaves are down. A local food store wants them, but...
You planted in 2018 bare root Jiro, posted your video a year ago, and at that time you has so beautiful crop. I planted in 2017 potted Jiro, still don’t have any fruits!
yes?Sir, How do you groe a Jiro in your backyard.cus,i plant a two Jiro in my backyard and its very hard to grow?what im gonna do if its not grow.6 month already and still small, pls help me how to grow that plant .
It depends where you are in southern BC we had a Fuyu and it gave us fruit after 5 years against a south facing wall. Worth every penny! Super delicious and stays on the tree into November when you can pick and eat half frozen gelatinous deliciousness! Here I am in zone 7.
I don’t know in what zone you guys live, but I live at KY and persimmons tree growing fast and big… I would recommend to plant trees at list 30’ apart…
Hi there, I tried 3 times to grow persimmon trees, and never like. I spend money, and saw the trees died. We are living in Georgia. I don't know what to do. It is very sad, because I love persimmons.
Seedless fruit goes against the laws of nature, we shouldn't be supporting seedless stuff, at the same time the fruit becomes too sweet and loses its enzymatic elements and greater health benefits. Nature perfected the art, if man is going to complain about seeds and manipulate nature, the food won't be as healing, and may even be detrimental in the long run. Nice video.
Never had an American Persimmon that didn't taste excellent and none that I have had were named varieties, just wild ones from seed. All the times I've had Asian persimmons I was not impressed. Maybe I'm just expecting the pumpkin spice deliciousness of an American persimmon?

Exact same here!

I love those fruit persimmon ❤❤❤
The cold doesn't give me permission to grow persimmons. What a tease. Great garden you have!
I live in zone 10b and my fuyu is by far my most prolific and delicious tree !
I had no clue about these little trees that told how the winter was going to be. That's really cool how nature can tell things like that. 🙂
Thank you! I will put this tree on my list for planting.
Love that introduction
Thanks for the video Dan. Just added this one to my wish list :) I'm also in zone 9b in AZ.

Deer may eat the tender leaves, which can affect the yield. But after the fruits set, they do not bother the tree.
Thank you, brother!
I love mine. I gave away more then I ate. My neighbors love them too
Love those persimmons. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you. What is your USDA zone ?
Ordered one per your recommendation.

What state or county or city are you in. I mean I am looking for the best or least weather location for growing persimmon, giant fuyu. Thank you
Thanks for sharing the video! I have a first year young persimmon tree but I have seen the leafs all curling with edges drying up (turning brown). I don't see any insects on the leafs. Do you know what could have caused the issue? Thank you!
You should try: (H-63a Paradise). (Goliath). (Prok). (Gift of Sophie). (David’s Kandy). (Sestronka/NB-21 Hybrid). (Journey). (Claypool H-120). (Yates). (Saijo)
I'm in zone 9a and growing a tamopan persimmon tree. Those were my mother in law favorite.
How amazing! Dan in which zone are you located?
I am in Eastern MA Zone 6 (or 7a due to the recent global warming). Fuyu/Jiro claims to be as hardy as Zone 7 not sure whether it may thrive in my garden?
You make me jealous, where I live the summers do not get hot enough for some species of trees to produce fruits.
God bless your heart, sir, for this video. My question is that is it good for Detroit MI zone to plant such a tree??
I live in northwest florida and for many years my non-astringent fuyu did well. Then I noted diseased areas about the bases of where branching occurred. I also hear that the type of soil is important and in sandy soil (like on my east coast of Florida) persimmon tree will not have fruits.

I want to buy this Fuyagaki thing.... lol I absolutely love your videos

Can persimmon grow in tropical country like Philippines???
Hi Dan is there a specific nursery you would recommend.
American Persimmons grow in the other zones. They are mostly male so it will most probably take several to get fruiting ones.
Can it be grown in containers? I live in zone 5.
you can grow american persimmons outdoors in zone 5.
I have my first two Asian persimmons I will be planting into the yard. An unknown fuyu type… and a Nakitas Gift.
My neighbor's Nikita tree (in North Carolina) is loaded with lovely fruit after only 2-3 years; I hope you have similar luck.

It started out with hundreds… it self-thinned its own fruit… and now has several dozen. The leaves even survived the Japanese beetles.
Where can I buy this type of persimmon fruit tree.
Can you keep them this small? I was told not to plant one in my yard because they need a lot of room.
What does it taste like compared to more common fruit? I never even heard of it til recently. It looks like a mix of a tomato and apricot

Do future persimmons get soft like the large varieties of Japanese persimmons
Yep you just gotta pick them ripe and they soften off the tree..turn into glorious jelly custard
So this variety of persimmon doesn't have to be soft and gelatinous to be ready to eat?
Yes, you can eat it crunchy, but it does get sweeter as it softens up similar to the astringent varieties.
yes?Sir, How do you groe a Jiro in your backyard.cus,i plant a two Jiro in my backyard and its very hard to grow?what im gonna do if its not grow.6 month already and still small, pls help me how to grow that plant .
In my experience they grow slow for the first 2 year and in BC, Canada I get fruit in year 5 at the earliest so far.
Can this grow in Canada ? Thanks
too cold

This Jiro variety looks similar to Fuyu. Deelish.
It is a Fuyu. I just bought mine and the tag says Fuyu (Jiro). I guess there are many sub-varieties of Fuyu.
What distance between two plants, for fuyu Verity. please reply
Usually this plant grow slowly in usa. distance between 16-20 feet seems good

It's your only Persimmon, so why recommend it if you don't have others. Title is slightly misleading
So I can’t grow it in michigan?
According to Stark Brothers website, Jiro is hardy to zone 6 so you would be okay in some parts of Lower Michigan.

It came literally when I was eating persimmon.
For some reasons, the fruits in your garden look pretty small, at least much smaller than other UA-camrs. I was wondering if you'd never thinned them.
The Appalachian persimmons
Non-astringent varieties cant compare to the flavor and texture of a tree ripened Hachiya or Saijo persimmon

They're beautiful trees and fruits, but honestly they're tasteless They taste like Caimito, but caimito tastes a lot better

All parts of the American Perssimon are banned in few western states due to risk of some disease.
best persimmon are the appalachian persimmons
It's tasteless is what it is
The grocery store ones are, because they are picked before ripening.
No they are not tasteless. They are actually too sweet for me if you get the right one
