Thank you for posting this video. White is the bane of my painting skills (as I am sure it is for many others) and just want to get them good enough to get on the table.
Thanks Luke - this vid maybe 3 years old but was just was I was looking for, stumbled on it whilst searching for ways to paint white scars quickly. I'd already watched a few that, whilst good, seem to take ages, and I don't want to win any Golden Demons, just get my 60 odd miniatures on the table looking decent without taking all year. You've been a real help - cheers!
Nice one Luke! My method is pretty similar (light grey primer, black wash, grey-white dry brush, white dry brush) but your method is spot on for getting a lot of figures done in a reasonable time! Probably the best one that I found on the web.
Great tip. There's loads of vids out there on how to paint to the finest detail, however a lot of people have armies to paint - it's just not practical if you ever want to play. The results on this technique appear surprisingly good. Cheers.
I just stumbled upon your channel and you are a saint. I was pulling my hair out painting word of Blake battletech minis and this literally save me about a day and a half worth of time. Thank you for sharing this.
I wish this video was up before I painted the stormtroopers of Star Wars Imperial assault. I hate painting white. This video may change my mind. As always, Awesome tutorial Luke!
This is a great video showing how white shouldn't bet intimidating. Good job. My only critique is that I prefer a lighter brown wash over black with lighter colors like white.
I swear to god, I hate painting white ... 1 female white scars space marine conversion took me ... and I shit you not ... 6 Hours to paint using dark grey, working outwards to lighter grey's and whites. .. I'm definitely going to give this a shot .. looks pretty easy and quick but also means I can spend more time just cleaning up and whitening the whole thing after I get to the point above ... I have an issue with not being able to table-top wargaming standard paint ... Everything must be "Perfect" ... Curse the OCD! But this is a great idea and help! ... Cheers Dude!!
The one issue I have, is I've always used the "proper" rattle-can paint from GW, Army painter etc .. How'd I know which paints I can use from say pound-land or wherever if it's gloss, without ruining the model and totally drenching it in paint ... Is it just a point of looking for acrylic on the label or something else?
Good technique and vid, really enjoyed it. Btw, might be worth investing in Army Painter's Quickshade Wash Mixing Medium. Mix it in with the Dark Tone, it breaks the surface tension even more AND gives you longer working time.
Just stumbled on this great vid coming back to the hobby, got some tau that I want to light grey armour purple material. Will the varnishing help once the model is base coloured with both? Or is it just for white/gray?
So instead of nuln oil what did you use? Sorry mate I didn’t quite catch it. Is there a citadel paint you could recommend or is nuln oil the only one?? Could you dry brush back over the model with Idk corax white or sthg? Sorry I’m really reaally new to painting and decided to paint chaos marines in white n gold🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️
Its interesting that these colors are problematic (for me as well) considering how prevalent there are in a lot of color schemes. This is a really nice tutorial for a quick, batch-paint, tabletop standard that, at least in my opinion, looks better than most of the other ways I've seen.
Going to give this a try on some 15mm sci-fi miniatures I'm painting. Quick question about flow aide. You said you can use fairy liquid but would any branded washing up liquid work?
Lukes Aps Cheers mate, is it just the one single coat over the white so you can wash the model? Some one of your other videos you say you do like 3 coats of varnish?
Awesome stuff Luke - I've done similar before, but using a light grey undercoat. Using the lacquer is a brilliant idea though - might have to give that a try at some point :) Out of interest, where'd you get your mini holder from? I've got one from another company, but it's designed to pin larger models and busts in. A couple like yours would be cool for batch painting squads :)
Brilliant tutorial, would never have thought to use gloss on that way. Did you find it hard to apply other paints over the gloss? Or is it just the wash that glides? Tempted to use a blue wash as I'm looking to do a White Panthers chapter.
absolutely terrible. imagine putting together a painting tutorial video and it be this bad but you upload it anyway. white armor, if you want to make it look good, requires technique and practice, when you take short cuts like "wash tne entire model" "then dry brush the entire model" your model is going to look like it was painted by someone whos either lazy or never painted before. anyone looking to paint white armor go find a different video, this is a damn shame
Not everything has to be an amazing work of art on the table. If your goin in for a comp knock yourself out, but i dont get this elitist attitude when it comes to dry brushing, as its an effective technique that looks good.

It also looks nice if you go with a blue-black wash instead of straight black. A blue shade has a tendency to make white look whiter. :)
Ooh ok

I'm painting some Plague Marines for my Death Guard armor, this helped

Thank you from 2021!

Where were you 2 months ago when i started my viorla tau army
Absolute fantastic!
That's the armour for my Necro Van Saar gang sorted!

Nice
Ive been trying a few different methods for white and this looks way less hassle than trying to highlight the panels after the wash.
Okey dokey, that's definitely something to try when I get my hands on Stormtroopers for Star Wars: Legion
i plan to begin to work on my Banshee, who got a very big white shroud , i wonder does it much easier if i just airbrush white over a gray primer ?

Cheers Luke,
Basic's never go out of fasion, and Everybody needs more hints and tips ,
Ok good job, Now krack-on ;-) .
great tutorial Luke. I'm going to give it a try on some 15mm sci fi miniatures
Great process. What would be the effect of just priming the minis in a gloss white? Seems like that would do the same thing in one step. Cheers!

or you could just take the same amount of time to do a careful recess wash
That would take longer
Plus more chance of mucking it up
Nice video, and good video explaining it. Gonna try this with stormcasts!
Great tutorial Luke
Awesome video, where did you get that rack for your craft paints?

What kind of white paint did you use for the drybrushing?
Any should do but i prefer Vallejo white. Its a very clean bright white and has a great consistency to it.
this is amazing for my world eaters, thanks bro
Will the clear lacquer from Halfords work for this? I know it’s for cars but it just says acrylic based high gloss finish.
Lukes Aps Cheers mate, is it just the one single coat over the white so you can wash the model? Some one of your other videos you say you do like 3 coats of varnish?
Lukes Aps Thanks bud

Where you get the that gloss varnish from in uk? 2 pound that's a steal.
Lukes Aps cheers
Would this work with quickshade strong tone ? Thinking about this to build my stormcast army
sorry to ask , what are those wooden stands you use to hold the models for painting?
I have only come into the hobby and truly started painting within the past year. What is flow aide?
it reduces the surface tension of water based paints so you can apply them in smoother layers. a little dish soap works in most cases.
were do you get your figure holder from?
Does this work for painting on the sprue?
Alright... Love it, alright.
Great tutorial, Luke!

link to the paint factory white ?
Looks cool, I done Blue, grey, and even (so not liked) Orange,...
what's the name of your paint rack? :)
Thanks :) Can't find it though. Do they have a website or store beside facebook profile?
We call this a pin wash in scale modeling, but you probably know that :) (thats for the gloss and wash over it.)
Pin wash isnt when you slap the wash all over, its when you put the wash only where its needed.
armour?
I have one damn ravenwing apothecary to do, and this is exactly what I needed.
Good to see that the Woodprix has new instructions to save my money and energy to build it.

Ahhh another one out of the how to paint sloppy and ugly series..
i know m80 :) That's why people watch your vids. Quick and basic.
