- A Dallas dentist, disciplined by the state after the death of his patient, is now being sued by the patient's children. The lawsuit contends that the dentist should have never performed the oral surgery on the 82-year-old woman.

Dialysis four times a week sounds to me like she was not a good candidate for any kind of elective surgery and especially not out patient.
Dialysis four times a week? She should have been preparing to meet her maker and be content with eating soft foods for the rest of her limited time on earth. Pride goes before a fall.
Plus a waste of money. She didn't have much time left.. Implants or no implants.
And her trip with her sisters would have been a bit of a hassle being as though she would have had to be in dialysis for 4 days, about 12-14 hours total, during those precious days with her family.
Exactly! So true.
Exactly. She’s too old for that.
Dentist here. This is truly heartbreaking. I’ve learned patients will push for what they want and become upset when you’re obtaining clearance from a physician on managing health issues. If you find a dentist to be annoying because they want clearance or for you to manage your blood pressure, thank them.
She should've also stayed in Dallas until the all clear was given for her to fly. If it comes out in court that she pushed him to do that, or withheld any info, it might hurt their case. However if he went ahead and gave her those teeth in a rushed manner, with the knowledge she had failed kidneys and had sickle cell anemia, he'll never practice again. Not saying she couldn't, but if anything was off, and no other doctors knew her plans, then a lawsuit might get complicated.
This happened during covid right after lockdown? Probably also during the health system burnout and couldn't get a patients records or contacting physicians related to her health. Heartbreaking story at any rate, especially considering her age and health. God Bless the family and this situation as a whole. 😢
Well obviously this wasn't the case here. He knew the risk he was taking knowing her medical history. He just wanted the money quickly and wasn't willing to do due diligence. I hope he pays for it.
@ATl404sfinest your right some patients don't listen and want what they want but didn't she die after she left the office? Plus did she sign a disclaimer ?
My dad is 80, I dissuaded him from getting implants. Let's be honest here, at some point in your life and considering your health, it's not worth the hassle, risk, cost, time.
and money. Such a waste of $40,000.00.
So true. Why did this same daughter not discourage her mom.
They shouldn't sue the dentist...it's not worthy it.
Yea I have a 82 year old grandmother. I’d strongly encourage her not to do something like this… being a traveling nurse myself ; suing people that wanted to help and I didn’t turn out as expected because it should have never happened is a little extreme. But that’s healthcare today . No one what’s to be accountable for their own actions. This is American where the blame game has always been
You are correct.
Oral surgery is not a walk in the park. It’s all about $$$. She had a lot of moving parts; sickle cell, End Stage Renal Disease and on dialysis. May she RIP.
I feel like out of all the medical professionals dentists are the greediest ones
Yea my grandma is on dialysis and a host of other health problems she 73 I would never let her get this
The family should not let her have that her health was frail.
If she had renal failure, it's the family's fault for dragging her in there.
And at her age .
That's a big surgical procedure, Not sure you want to undertake at 82
Which is why the dentist should have declined? Tough one here.
Exactly 💯 they're just as much to blame! Who in their right mind with all those health problems and age would consider doing that procedure? SMH ISMT
As an Ex nurse she knew better, she could've went to her Doctors for a check-up and to get an ok but she didn't
Someone seeing a dentist!!!🙄 He knew about her health problems and didn't see a problem so why should SHE!!🙄@@Joan-f3t
Darwinism.
My father did the same thing. He’s 83 years old. We couldn’t talk him out of it. He’s ok though. God bless that lady❤
I work for a dentist and every patient has to fill out an extensive health history. We get medical clearance 100% of the time. Sometimes it can be very frustrating making sure everything is addressed, but it’s absolutely necessary. Many times we turn people away if the dr’s aren’t comfortable with moving forward. We’ve had patients get so upset because we can’t give them what they want. It’s all about the patients safety.
I’m a patient and I put that I smoke weed once a month and they bill my insurance 75$ for tobacco cessation. I don’t even smoke tobacco and I barely smoke weed. It’s all a scam.
It's a MIRACLE to have made it to 82 with sickle cell let alone 50. Wow!
I know, I am shocked !
A miracle
I’m a dental assistant so this caught my eye. It’s sad that this patient died. The medical clearance is very, very important. I hope the family gets what they deserve and find some kind of peace.
Dental assistant here as well. I agree! We will not touch a patient without medical clearance! Especially for geriatric patients. It’s so sad! 😢
Some do
There is a point where we need to take control of our own health, instead of relying on people that do not know you & probably don't care about you.
Amen!
Sad but true. It's got to a point I really dnt trust these doctor's of today. I missed my old doctor's whom hv retired. They really cared rather than cared more about the money. Now, today's doctor's and I don't mean all but for the ones I came across doesn't listen, have one track mind and about that mighty dollar. Sad.

Same here I'm in need of e syensive dental work ,But would not rush into any type of surgery due to my heart condition and also severe sinus issue being put to sleep would also not be an option for me ,And even when I went they said theyd need clearance on my heart ,So it's not like the doctor didnt mention it,They absolutley did
She must have extensive health issues for her age
She would have went to any dentist who would have performed this procedure. Long trip home was the culprit. Daughter and mom should have known better.
I agree, but some parents are just so strong willed and stubborn so what can you do?

True but that dentist should have known better
If the Mother was stubborn and the daughter was so against this she should have talked to the Dr and told him to back off. Her medical issues alone should have been reason enough. The daughter is at fault also

why their children did not company her to that appointment,?
My thoughts exactly🧐🤔
why they din't tell the doctor of her serious illnesses?
Many elderly are never accompanied by their family. At the hospital you’ll see it all the time. Sad, because many are confused and need help physically and with directions.
Many times I would see the elderly wait all day in the lobby until a family member would pick them up.

My mom has had her dentures since she was 20 and she's 82 also. Getting implants would be the last think she would think of. Getting any surgery at any age can be a risk and these unnecessary elective surgeries for elderly shouldn't even be considered. Just because someone is very old and still full of life doesn't mean their organs are young.

Perfectly said. You have a lot of common sense. So many people don't anymore.
Blood pressure is important, if it’s not good don’t do it.
Absolutely negligent. I worked for many years in NY alongside dentist, and they will not do surgery on any high risk patient unless the patient had medical clearance. People should be aware and check the patient records before doing this type of procedure
Exactly 👍 I agree 💯 the dr. Should have known also. They are the professionals
The patient and her daughter should have done their due diligence and consulted with her doctor before undergoing elective surgery. You cant depend on others to do what you can do for yourself.
How is the dentist negligent because this lady CHOSE to travel a long distance to his office?!
He was the professional, but many of them only care about how much they can get from their patient, don't not care of putting a patient at risk of losing her life or having a really bad outcome. A patient medical history should give a Dr a very good idea if the person is a good candidate for a procedure or not.
@@bettysmith4527Because he’s supposed to be a licensed professional and should’ve known better. She wasn’t the doctor. 🙄
I did a working interview at a dental office, so there was a patient who was back because 'last time his bp was high' so they sent him to his heart dr where he had his meds adjusted because 'the other day his bp was high at the dentist' anyway I picked up the bp cuff and noticed it was 30 off and told the dr she needs to have this calibrated. She asked me how to do that, idk at the place you bought it, your the dr. Also all their lidocaines and carbocaines were expired, like the ones they had ready to use on patients. I declined the job and said I would be lowering my standards to work there.. as someone whos been in the medical feild a long time and in other than the dental area, its scary out there!
Glad you had the integrity to say nope not working here.
Thank you for having morals
Same here, I quit 2 jobs due to a lot of fraud and really bad standard of care, once worked in an office where they hired a dentist who was an alcoholic an was drinking alcohol while doing dental work,
Hope you did your civic duty and reported the clinic to the correct authorities.
Cool fake story bottom, can't say it youtube is lame now XD
You sound like a typical word that gets into basic medical care now and acts like you have years of experience XD
I wouldn't want you treating me
She did not have a lot of years ahead...mom was very sick. Daughter suing is ridiculous and of course for the money
Im 63 and just had eye surgery. I had to go thru extensive tests to be cleared for surgery. It was postponed 4 months because i had hi blood pressure . 160/ 90 . Not too high but enough. I had to get a physical and blood tests and a full medical history . Except for hi blood pressure , im in good shape.
I cant believe they operated on an 80 year without doing a work up and tests first.
That's the family responsibly.
My Dr. won't touch me if any numbers are off!!!!
Exactly.
Why didn’t her family talk to her before this procedure and advise her it wasn’t a good idea? Any type of surgery comes with a much higher risk when you are elderly and especially when you have chronic health conditions . I’m a RN but this is simple common sense. Now an irresponsible daughter wants to sue the dentist 🙄.
Not sure about calling the daughter irresponsible. Everyone knows the elderly are at higher risk under anesthesia, but people usually tend to trust the doctor in charge. I don't agree with the lawsuit because they ruled her death as a pulmonary embolism as a result of the long road trip home.
Getting cosmetic surgery at 82. Hopefully these dummies dont get a dime.
And get a second opinion. Even Google easily reveals why this case was high risk. In my case I preferred a bridge, but the adjacent tooth wasn't a good candidate to support it.
dental implants at 82 with predetermined health issues. As a non medical person that sounds scary.
@@yvettekinchking8838Not scary enough for the doctor apparently.🤷🏽♀️
Daughter said she had a trip planned. Was like she could just have major surgery and then leave for a vacation. What you do about dialysis when on vacation?
Depends on what type of dialysis, some do it at home
What happened to her was related to her long traveling and her SICKLE Cell disease more than likely and zero to do with the actual dental procedure!
The dental surgery may not have actually contributed to her demise since she had other serious health issues.
Attend another center but you typically have to schedule it weeks in advance
You can go on Dialysis ANYwhere ...
That's why you should always look up the doctor's records to see if there's been any complaints against them
I had 2 implants done to anchor my lower partial. Worst pain ever ,expensive and lasted only 5 years. Don't let them sell you on a full set. It IS a major surgery with all the risks.
Beautiful woman! God bless her soul & condolences to the family!

The daughter said they tried to talk her out of it. The mother wanted it. As someone who wears partials, I understand completely how she felt, they can be difficult to adjust too. But I have heard too many bad stories about implants so that was not my choice.
Many dentists will show you the door if you are on certain medications such as antidepressants and psych meds because they don’t want the risk of you being taken out of their office in a body bag.
Yes, my doctor wouldn't do anything but a filling till I got the all clear, when I had a recent health scare.
I'm curious: What about the antidepressants/ psych meds would make them not want to take the risk? What are the risks?
I've been on and off psych meds/antidepressants throughout my life but have never had a dentist raise any concern other than a side effect that (if I recall correctly) Depakote had on a tiny part of my gum.

Bacteremia from mouth infections can damage pulmonary and other vascular endothelium and promote platelet adherence and thrombosis. It is definitely a related consequence and the risks are increased with renal failure.

This is like getting mad at your mechanic when you bring in your dilapidated old 40 year old rusty car and for a set of tires and the transmission throws out and the car dies a couple days later. I'm not trying to insult this lady, but it's not necessarily the mechanics fault when an old car breaks down is it? One of the risks of being elderly is a very high susceptibility to infections and infectious diseases. When getting dental work done great care should be taken or better hygiene. Could happen to anyone.
You don’t understand medicine AT ALL. this wasn’t the best decision for the patient to sign up for this procedure but as a medical professional him TAKING her as a patient was WRONG. This could’ve been avoided if it wasn’t a negligent $ grab …
@@BeautybyKelli how would an understanding of medicine make a difference at all knowing what is right for a patient when you don't even know them or their particular case? You are grasping at straws. I am making a generalization that sometimes s*** happens and it's not caused by some other simultaneous s*** that also happened. Tranquilo senior
WHAT PART OF "END STAGE" DO THEY NOT UNDERSTAND?
Whew child no med clearance? SMH he did not learn his lesson the first time?
Why she’s 82 wtf that’s crazy
Vanity🤷♀️
Honestly I don't find the fault of the dental office in this! ANYONE can get a PE from long travel and it very likely had nothing to do with the dental procedure and everything to do with HER CHOICE to travel far for the surgery. The dental office had zero control over when and where she traveled to get to and from there! Just my opinion!!
The only thing the doctor did was what the woman wanted to do and had the money ($45,000) and the vanity to move forward with it. This suit is frivolous. People need to let the natural aging process take its course.
You'll should have convinced your mother not to do such drastic surgery knowing her underlying conditions
I've heard it's tough to be on dialysis. Why want more time-consuming medical procedures? Implants are basically medical which is far more than getting a dental filling or crown. I know 2 people who tried to get dental implants and the process, which was painful, failed because there wasn't enough bone to drill into, even after grafting, and they were in their 50s. Maybe some people like going through pain. Count me out.
Dental implants are a terrible idea for anyone. I have family that had that procedure done and some 10-20 years later bacteria grew underneath the implants and caused infections. They had to get them removed and got removable dentures at the end of all that pain and money spent.
Dental implants if done properly work very well. I saw a lot of implants when I worked alongside dentist and the results were wonderful. They have to be performed by an oral surgeon with that expertise, I knew one dentist that was doing implants only with minimum training, and he did not get good results since they can only use the mini implants.
I wouldn't want you to scare away patients that need dental implants by saying they are terrible for anyone!! As with any medical / dental procedure, there are risks and a lifespan for everything, but dental implants usually are a great improvement in quality of life and the surgeons I have worked for advise patients the implants should be with them for the rest of their lives and that seems to be accurate. Patients should be aware it's important to #1. Be in good health when they have surgery so that their healing is not affected negatively by something like uncontrolled diabetes #2. implants should be done by a specialist, such as an oral surgeon or periodontist, and occasionally these Dr's. have their MD as well , and #3 patients have to commit to going to the dentist several times a year for regular exams and cleanings where the Dr. will confirm all is healthy etc just like patients should for their original teeth. If they have a denture that is secured by 4 ( or more ) implants then the Dr. will remove it for them at their exams and clean it as well as clean around the implants / gums
Sorry to hear what your family experienced though! Maybe they didn't have a very good dr or had other health issues etc ...
I've never said this before in a comment section but I'll say it now. I appreciate your respectful and informative replys. I might have been a little harsh.
@shadowdio9512 no worries 👍 I wasn't trying to be a know it all ! Just ust have seen how life- changing in a good way implants can be
It took almost 2 years before insurance finally approved spinal surgery on my dad due to his diabetes. And he's in his 60s! How was this approved for an elderly woman with sickle cell, kidney failure, and end stage renal disease? Just wow. Money man
At 82, I don't think one should have any kind of surgery. It's more about maintenance at that point.
I'm not a doctor, and just hearing about all of her illnesses told me she wasn't a candidate for surgery. Omg. He was after the dollars and didn't give a damn about the patient. Smh
At 82, why on earth you want implaint. Why didnt she do this earlier. She was on the end of her life and the family know it. They trying to get money grab. Lmao. She is lucky to be 82. Most dont even get to that age.
Maybe it was just her time to die. Now the family sees a chance to get some money. Its not the dentists fault she had a long ride home.
Oh my what are they thinking? Implants are a serious procedure. 82 yrs old going home alone after surgery? What are they thinking?! They think it’s just a walk in the park. It takes few days to recover! Right after surgery, the patient is weak and in pain. Oh boy! Equal responsibilities it should be with the clients.
They tried that with an elderly in my family to get teeth and I said “No way you are performing surgery on my 85 year old relative just for teeth”. We are fine with dentures. It’s a monetary scam, allegedly. Their elderly body cannot handle all that anesthesia, bleeding and infection recovery. Did you know they don’t even like to do a colonoscopy for some of the same reasons for upper-aged adults?
I would never allow a guy with eyes like that be my dentist.
😂😂😂😂
A lot of medical professionals do not comply to the basic standards of their profession. It’s sad.
82, on dialysis? omg that dentist was truly an idiot to do that. All he saw was dollar signs. I can bet you that!! I see people in their 80's all the time in my work as an MRI tech and say to my coworkers that if they find something, what next? They are too old in my opinion to undergo risky surgery. Live your life and stop trying to live forever. Surgery shortens your life!! You got a backache? Take some ibuprofen or aspirin and live with it!! Surgery and medical error are one of the leading causes of death in elderly.
If I were over 80 I wouldn't have any major dental work done, or surgery unless it was absolutely necessary, especially at 82. I would request the least that could be done for me to maintain a decent manner to eat, even if I had to only consume soft foods. Many of these dentists are greed-driven that's it. You have to be your own advocate when it comes to health and dental care because many of those who perform the task are only interested in how much they can obtain from you and your insurance that's it, plain and simple. But, the woman's children should've persuaded her to receive clearance. I would never allow my 82-year-old mom to undergo this type of dental care, especially having to be sedated without her medical doctor. clearance. Her children didn't get involved enough in taking care of their mom as they should have.
Beautiful mom ❤
This lady and her family should of known better for her to get this surgery. She was in bad health
But shouldn't family take charge and advise their loved ones not to make obvious wrong decisions such as this? They are all adults. 82 looking beautiful as she should, I would have been happy to be alive and enjoy my family. Why risk it???
Personally i believe our time of death is set from the time we are born. Can't do anything about it so why worry about it. Live life to the fullest. I look at death as a step into a new adventure.
I think that too . But then again there's people that die because of someone else , or whatever else . Like Hezekiah in the bible .
or through their own neglect. @@ArielGibson757
The only thing I'm worried about is leaving my son who only has me . 😢
There is only two choices we all have; Heaven bound or Hell bound and I will tell you according to God's Holy Word, hell is not the "new adventure" you want!!!!!!! JESUS SAVES SOULS!!!!!!!!!!!

When I was a CNA my patient's daughter had 3 teeth pulled in one day. She died in her sleep the following day. They said something about the bacteria or something from the bad teeth she had traveled to her bloodstream and hit her heart.
